PROBLEM: Inside the area there is a non-waterproofed industrial landfill where the residues from the demolition of the electrolytic cells for aluminum production have been deposited (concretes, refractories, anodes and carbon cathodes, iron, fluorite-based salts, slag of aluminum) and other industrial production / maintenance residues that generally involve the presence of contaminants such as PAHs, hydrocarbons, fluorides and heavy metals. In addition to these residues there are other inorganic wastes (mainly carbon residues) and urban-like waste (rags, plastics, tires, etc.). The volume of the landfill to be reclaimed is estimated at around 298,000 m3.

The surface condition of the settlement soils was affected, in the course of previous industrial production, by organic and non-organic contamination.

The purpose of the interventions is the removal of the first centimeters of contaminated soil, followed by restoration with imported soil and proceeding with permanent safety (asphalting and / or waterproofing).

ENTITY AND TYPE OF INTERVENTION:

The intervention involves the removal of the first 20 cm of land, in predefined areas according to the project, according to punctually identified excavation polygons, with consequent verification of the excavation background and carryover of new land for filling.

Object of intervention are about 20,000 cubic meters of soil and 30,000 cubic meters of concrete and / or asphalt pavement, divided into different areas identified in specific georeferenced polygons within the plant.

The excavation is carried out by means of an overturned bucket crawler excavator, with a georeferencing system in real time. The matrices removed are from time to time accumulated in a protected area and subjected to classification prior to disposal. Some types, contaminated with asbestos, are bagged before the off site conferment.

Packaging is carried out by Ambienthesis trained and protected personnel with specific protection equipment.

PROBLEM: The site was a former settlement of synthesis products of organic chemistry.Over the decades, following the detected contamination due to previous activities, third-party companies have carried out various remediation interventions on the matrices involved.

In 2004 a further and in-depth campaign was conducted to investigate the characterization of soils (probing and trenches, also in the external areas surrounding the area under study) and groundwater (piezometers).Upon award of a public invitation to tender, from 2007 Ambienthesis carries out the safety of the groundwater on site, by directly emitting and treating it on site, by means of a specially designed and equipped modular mobile plant.

Following the final design of the site remediation (commissioned by the Contracting Authority as a qualified designer and approved by the Services Conference) and subsequent public tender experiment, Ambienthesis was also awarded the land remediation interventions, aimed at the final solution of the problems of the place.

The objective is to remove approximately 100,000 cubic meters of land heavily contaminated by volatile hydrocarbons and nitrogenous organic substances (notably BTEX and ammonia), while maintaining the hydraulic barrier for the entire duration of the works.

ADOPTED TECHNOLOGY:

The first intervention lot, of which Ambienthesis is the winner, consisted in the execution of the activities necessary for the maintenance in operation of the hydraulic barrier (5 wells) complete with water pumping and collecting systems, as well as in the freight and management of the water. treatment plant, for a period of at least 2 years to be extended until the reclamation of the area has been carried out.benzene, toluene and xylenes, in addition to ammoniacal nitrogen are the contaminants present in groundwater to be removed, due to previous activities. The contamination values detected of these substances are rather high (thousands of ppm) if compared with the legal limits allowed for groundwater.

Demolition works were carried out on the buildings and residues of the plants on site, after reclamation of the artifacts containing asbestos (in a compact and crumbly matrix) and mineral wool.

at the same time, Ambienthesis provided for the removal of over 30,000 cubic meters of land and underground waste contaminated with BTEX and nitrogenous substances. The excavation, performed in a statically and dynamically confined space, took place following the characterization of the waste.

The installed tensile structures were prefabricated modular type, they had a surface of 60x30 m each, made with provisional aluminum purlins and fireproof polyethylene sheets.The internal volume of the same allowed the necessary operation of the vehicles also in terms of height.In order to partition some sections of the excavation, Larsen-type metal piles have been previously installed, then paraded at the end of the works.

During the working period, the facilities for draining the water that emerged from the excavation were also installed and managed.

The vehicles used during the interventions have been equipped with emission abatement systems (water boilers) and cabins insulation systems (pressurization systems with combined filters).The confined space has been subjected to constant monitoring of the working conditions (indoor) and of the emissions (exhausts of the extraction system), as well as the environmental conditions were monitored weekly at the perimeter of the work areas.

The contaminated matrices were temporarily placed in a sheltered position within the site, awaiting the excavation checks and the subsequent filling of the excavated volume with clean material supplied from the quarry. Following this, Ambienthesis created a volume confined to armed lands, with construction criteria identical to those of the landfills for non-hazardous areas, within which the contaminating waste was stored.

Ambienthesis has provided for the supply and installation of the inert layers (clays, drains, ground cover), supplies and installation of geosynthetics (HDPE, Bentonite, TNT) and useful and necessary preparations for the management of leachate and of rainwater.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESULTS:

The intervention of Ambienthesis has finally allowed the solution of an environmental problem that has been dragging on for decades.

The operation as well as conducted allowed the best protection of the workers, potentially exposed third parties and the environmental matrices directly involved and surrounding.

CUSTOMER: ILVA S.p.A. (ora ArcelorMittal Italia SpA)

LOCATION:The object of the intervention is the reclamation and demolition of the S3 tank containing OCD and sludge. The tank is located within the Taranto iron and steel plant. In disuse for years, it was used as a container of muds that were improperly accumulated on its floating roof, causing it to collapse.

The area develops in the steel plant of Taranto, site of National Interest.

The purpose of the interventions is the removal of the sludge and residues of Denso Fuel Oil (OCD) accumulated over the years inside the tank called S3, with a maximum useful capacity of 92,000 cubic meters.

The activities take place at the production site, under the direct control of the Client, as well as the DL and the CSE.

ENTITY AND TYPE OF INTERVENTION:

The intervention involves the extraction of the garbage in the tank (75 m in diameter). Before the intervention, all the necessary safety and stability assessments were carried out since the structure of the tank is compromised by the improper use of the same (the sludge has been dumped on the floating roof of the same which, with time and due to the overload has sold, collapsing inside the container).

INTERVENTION: Site reclamation of former Falck steelworks in Sesto San Giovanni (MI).Site of national interest, I Stralcio reclamation

CUSTOMER: Milanosesto S.p.A.

FINANCING: Milanosesto S.p.A.

LOCATION: The abandoned settlement in the 1990s occupies almost a third of the territory of the Municipality of Sesto San Giovanni.

The areas concerning Milanosesto constitute more than 80% of the former industrial site, for a total of about 1,600,000 square meters.

The area does not consist of a single plot but of more "Compartments" delimited by urban type roads and by sectors of residential and craft-commercial districts.

The sub-funds, of various area and industrial sizes (depending on the activity of the former operating chain) are identified by the denominations:

- sector CONCORDIA- sector UNIONE - sector TRAI- sector VITTORIA A- sector VITTORIA B- sector TRIANGOLO

In the past (2005-2009) each of the sectors has already been object of asbestos remediation and demolition of civil and industrial buildings therein. These interventions were already carried out by the operating structure of Ambienthesis S.p.A.

WORKING PERIOD: may 2014 – july 2017

PROBLEM: Soils must be reclaimed and the underground structures of the Union of the former Falck sector in Sesto San Giovanni must be demolished.

The interventions, carried out according to the reclamation project approved by Ministerial Decree, concern the “Città della Salute” section: they must be completed in time for the construction of the large healthcare facility developed on behalf of the Lombardy Region by the arch. Renzo Piano.

The activities take place in an urban context, providing for work in confined spaces, constantly supervised in real time by the client and the relevant bodies.

The object of intervention are over 360,000 cubic meters of contaminated land and about 150,000 cubic meters of heavily armed demolitions.

The activities include the implementation and operation, for the entire duration of the works, of a specially constructed hydraulic barrier, divided into five wells, each connected to the treatment system implemented on site.

All processing matrices (land, rubble, water) are subjected to on-site treatment, carried out by means of mobile plants authorised.

Criticalities of the interventions are attributable to the amount of materials to be removed and treated in the time, short, granted.

The construction site required for the installation of the soil washing plant, authorized for the treatment of 100 tons / hour, as well as the screens, the

crushers and the barrier water treatment plant is impressive.

The activities are carried out on extended shifts, seven days a week, without interruption, until the end of the remediation.

Most of the materials treated must be recovered and returned to the customer for re-use on site. Other non-recoverable quantities are destined for off-site disposal, for a total of over 200,000 tons. To this end, Ambienthesis has structured a list of authorized plants to receive the waste to be allocated very off site, both in terms of quantity and type, which includes over 25 authorized parties.

ENTITY OF THE INTERVENTION:

The remediation develops according to the criteria of the Approved Project, enriched by the numerous and intricate prescriptive measures elaborated by the numerous institutions involved (over 10 subjects).

Work activities are organized according to the following time schedule, well defined and contracted by precise milestones:

- document production (qualification of suppliers under the legality protocol);

- detailed and detailed executive planning, with the drafting of all the administrative procedures necessary for the financial year (DIA, practices for the discharge of water, noise waivers, instant for the operation of mobile plants ...);

- clearing and securing of the delivered areas;

- collection and disposal of various and bulky waste;

- demolition of railway connections and disposal of sleepers;

- preliminary investigations for debombing and possible recovery of underground asbestos products;

- securing and delimiting buildings of historical interest, to be preserved during construction;

- preparation of construction sites, with the installation of over 150,000 square meters of perimeter and waterproofed areas suitable for receiving the mobile washing and selection plants, with relative covered storage bays and characterization of the land and rubble;

- realization of the hydraulic barrier through the terebration of 5 barrier wells, diameter 500 mm, depth 40 m, with pumping of about 50 mc / h each;

All the above activities are conducted under constant supervision and environmental monitoring.

In particular, Ambienthesis deals not only with the general coordination of the contract, but also with the management of on-site treatments, operating through own authorized facilities pursuant to art. 208 of Legislative Decree 152/06.Each activity is carried out in full compliance with the current regulation, guaranteeing full traceability of the flows, through the keeping of registers and legal documents (loading and unloading registers, waste identification forms, Sistri forms) and documents required by contract (register of internal flows).

Through its own staff, operating over several shifts, Ambienthesis SpA manages and controls the operation of the plants, guaranteeing the success of the interventions.

Each batch of excavated and treated material is analytically verified in lots of 1,000 cubic meters, the documentation of the origin, the treatment cycle applied and the final destiny reserved (on or off site) is guaranteed for each lot.

Remediation from asbestos and mineral woolsEx Sisas Area - Pioltello (MI):The site of about three hectares is located in the eastern suburbs of Milan, within the Site of National Interest of Pioltello and Rodano. The intervention involved the selective demolition of all the structures in the former Sisas area (chemical plant).  REMEDIATION AND DEMOLITION 

over 97,000 tonnes of waste handled, of which 38,000 tonnes classified as hazardous; monitoring of environmental matrices and continuous operation of the hydraulic barrier; plant remediation and decommissioning with subsequent complete demolition, up to the ground

floor, of all the dense and complex plant engineering of the old plant; 3,000 t of industrial waste produced by plant reclamation (wastewater, sludge, catalysts, filters); 20,000 tons of metals sent for recovery off site at authorized facilities; 10,000 t of rubble sent for final disposal off site. 

ASBESTOS REMEDIATION 

removal of amiantifera matrix and mineral wool products; removal of over 60,000 m2 of mineral wool insulation on pipes, tanks and chimneys; reclamation of over 4,000 m of asbestos pipes; removal of over 20,000 m2 of asbestos cement roofing; removal of over 1,500 m3 of diatomite, stuffed into big bags.

INTERVENTION: INTERVENTIONS FOR THE REMOVAL OF CONTAMINATED WASTE / LAND IN THE CRATER AREA IN THE SYNDIAL DI MANTOVA SITE (MN).

LOCATION:The intervention is part of the wider reclamation intervention of the area called "Collina" denounced in 1980 by Montedison as an exhausted dump (L.R. 94/80) and currently owned by Syndial.

The “Collina” area is located within the Mantua petrochemical center, at the south-eastern end of the Versalis owned factory, between the Diversive Canal to the east, the Darsena to the south, the Sisma Canal to the west and the Tanks Park North. The area pertaining to the yard has an extension of approximately 5 hectares of which approximately 1 hectare, in a sub-area called Cratere (Area R1C), is the subject of the reclamation in question, affecting a total volume of contaminated waste / land to be removed, estimated at around 100,000 cubic meters.

PROBLEM: The Crater area - R1C is, in fact, the nucleus of the plant landfill, it operates uncontrollably until the 1980s.The content is made up of different and heterogeneous matrices, which are fooled in a non-systematic way. From the exploratory surveys available there are contaminants specific sites substantially of hydrocarbon nature, sometimes found in combination with metals (eg mercury). In detail, the die matrices are constituted by the queues and by the processing scraps of the plant (styrene).

Perimeter the reclamation intervention is delimited by an existing combiwall that develops continuously along the 4 sides going to the underlying waterproof substrate. The excavation for the removal of waste and contaminated land will reach the roof of the natural clayey / peat silt, which varies variably in the Crater between -8 and -10 m compared to the ground level. Considering the aforementioned theoretical depth and the extension of the R1C area, it is estimated a volume of waste and contaminated land to be removed equal to about 100,000 cubic meters.The intervention objective is the removal of waste and contaminated land beyond the CSRs that are located within the depths and areas identified.

ENTITY OF THE INTERVENTION:

The activity consists in removing about 100,000 cubic meters of waste and contaminated land in a confined space. This volume is enclosed within a perimeter combiwall of over 400 linear meters. The project involves the construction of internal partitions, always made using piles and sheet piles, in 15x15 m operating cells, each of which involves the removal of approximately 2,200 cubic meters of off-site materials. The peculiarity of the site and the material to be reclaimed is that it does not have sufficient bearing capacity for the transit and parking on its surface of the necessary means of work. For this reason, the intervention involves the execution "in advance" according to the diagram shown below where the red cells are those in excavation, the gray cells are those being tested, the yellow cells those are filling and, finally, the green cells those reclaimed and completed:

Waste consists of volatile and dangerous substances (VOC) therefore, in compliance with the design requirements, the intervention is planned in a confined space inside special mobile marquees (which will be moved with a suitable crane) that will guarantee the control and the treatment of atmospheric emissions generated during all phases of the intervention: excavation, testing and filling.

The management of emissions is guaranteed by an air treatment plant equipped with filters to reduce dust, VOCs and mercury. The system is sized for the treatment of about 36,000 cubic meters / hour and guarantees 4 air changes / hour in the operating structure and 1 air change / hour in the testing and filling ones.

In order to keep the groundwater level in the excavation cells sufficiently depressed, a dewatering network consisting of 8 deep wells is also planned. The water removed is sent to an existing water treatment plant within the Syndial plant which is directly responsible for its management.

The entire remediation involves the adoption of specific techniques and technologies of Ambienthesis know-how in each operational phase:

- excavation in potential presence of unexpected toxic substances and in conditions of low static geomechanics of the waste subject to removal and therefore use of environmental monitoring systems, adoption of selective excavation techniques, adoption of dust suppression systems and mitigation of the environment effects;

- excavation in an environment confined by radio-controlled means from the outside of the operating tensile structures in order to avoid / minimize the permanence of the operators inside, with a consequent noticeable improvement in the operating safety conditions;

- air treatment by means of a modern and efficient treatment plant capable of treating up to 36,000 mc / h of and guaranteeing 4 air changes / hour in the operating structure;

- 417/5000- plug & play type carbon filter replacement system, the entire filter is

replaced without the need for decanting / filling of the filters themselves with considerable simplification of activities, reduction of operational risks and exposure to pollutants for operators and cancellation of any dust emissions intrinsic to the movement of activated carbon;

- continuous atmosphere monitoring systems during excavation activities in order to prevent any problems relating to the explosiveness of waste and the exposure of operators;

- no storage of waste / land outside tensile structures and confined spaces;

- direct loading of the authorized personnel for the off-site transport of the waste produced inside the tensile structures;

- translating weighing system for verifying the load of waste and the introduction / extraction of semi-trailers intended for off-site transport of waste without the need for third parties (in this case the drivers of loading vehicles) to enter confined spaces. This task, however limited by the use of remote-controlled vehicles, remains reserved for highly specialized Ambienthesis operators.

The realizations are carried out in the scrupulous respect of the constructive details that the technical staff of the same company Ambienthesis has elaborated on behalf of the Client and has submitted to the approval of the Bodies.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESULTS:

The environmental result of the project is made up of several aspects, among which the most relevant are:- Containment and control of atmospheric emissions due to the

presence of waste and volatile substances during all phases of the work, from excavation to post-inspection re-filling;

- Containment and control of deep and superficial water with sending to treatment / disposal of the same;

- Reduction / elimination of additional drainage water following the occurrence of rainfall events once the operating tensile structure on each excavation cell has been put in place and operational (total roof coverage and perimeter termination by combiwall);

- Removal and removal due to dispatch to off-site disposal of approximately 100,000 cubic meters of waste and contaminated land.

Finally, Ambienthesis put itself at the service of the end customer with all its staff, in order to achieve the best result in terms of reliability and sustainability, economic and environment.

Although the project, lasting over 5 years, presents great uncertainty due to the possible heterogeneity of the waste to be removed and the current lack of a thorough knowledge of the same (which will be acquired along the way with the progress of the work), Ambienthesis represents itself as a dynamic reality able to deal with every possible unexpected, with the intent to guarantee the achievement of results in the expected timing. The broad qualification and technical-professional reliability of the company would allow, for example, to face new problems that may occur during work such as those related to materials containing asbestos or other unforeseen waste.

The presumed encodings of the outgoing waste destined to off-site disposal (managed directly by the Customer) are:
