Fordham University’s beautiful campus in the Bronx, where the majority of CitySquash’s practices take place, is a striking departure from the urban environment found in most parts of the borough. As in past years, the team spent weekends bunking at Groton, a boarding school in Massachusetts, and at Harvard. Dartmouth, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Bowdoin and Williams were among the other universities CitySquashers visited. Twelve team members attended summer academic programs, including ones at Rye Country Day, Westover, Kent and A.G. Oliver. Eighteen took part in overnight squash camps. Five attend- ed Outward Bound courses, spending as many as twenty-two days canoeing, rock climbing and hiking in the wilderness. CitySquashers enjoyed less structured, more leisurely summer experiences as well. Diana Edwards and Jesse Pacheco spent four days with the Darling family in Nantucket. Seetreeon Torres and Alija Hogans stayed with the Calders in Essex, Massachusetts. The Douglasses hosted Chris and Jose Fernandez on Long Island. Four summer campers spent an afternoon on the Ticonderoga, a historic sailing boat. The Briggses, Frantzes, Galluccios, Mandels, Stuarts and Steels all had team members up to Greenwich for swimming. The Morrises and Bogles did the same in Bronxville. Kingsley Amoako, a sixth grader, can’t get enough of the trips: “They are really fun. I get to go to places I’ve never heard of. We meet people on the trips. They are nice.” Team members also had the opportunity to meet remarkable individuals through CitySquash’s speaker series program. The day after 60 Minutes profiled Somali-born human rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the former Dutch parliamentarian, named the 2005 European of the Year by Reader’s Digest, spent the morning at CitySquash’s summer camp. E.U. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes visited By John B. Stetson Denver, CO – As he approached the peak of Treasure Mountain, halfway through his fourteen day trek through the Colorado Rockies, Freddy Hernandez was—on several levels—a long way from home. His Outward Bound group, two adult guides and eleven teenagers from Mexico City, San Francisco, Milwaukee and other places around North America, had been hauling thirty-five pound backpacks for miles each day through the mountains, waking up at dawn, setting up and breaking down tents, cooking meals over open fires. The three-hour hike to the top of Treasure Mountain, over Yule Creek and past the Alpine Lakes, was grueling. For most New York City teenagers, this was not a normal summer day. But the feeling of being outside of his comfort zone was not new to this three year veter- an of CitySquash. For Freddy, as for his team- mates, CitySquash is as much about trying new things as improving grades, as much about seeing the world as tweaking squash strokes. In the past year, CitySquashers visited twelve states outside of New York, as far west as Washington, as far north as Maine, as far south as Maryland. The program entered players in sixteen squash tournaments throughout the Northeast, totaling 203 individual entries. CitySquashers played an average of five tournaments each, frequently being hosted overnight by families. Forty-four families billeted CitySquashers over the course of the year. advisors regularly by email and phone, recruits alums of their schools to mentor them, and more. For CitySquashers who attend New York City public schools, the program experience has never been better. Thanks to generous gifts from William and Anne Harrison, The Pinkerton Foundation and K2 Advisors, CitySquashers now have a place to read, study, and work on school projects during weekday evenings and on the weekends. The new office and learning center is located in the heart of the Bronx’s Belmont neighborhood, four blocks from CitySquash’s partner school, M.S. 45. CitySquash added two full-time employees in September, increasing its full-time staff to six. More support from CitySquash means higher expectations of team mem- bers. Middle schoolers are required to attend a literacy ses- sion every other Friday, in addition to their two weekly after- noon tutoring sessions. Students who have an academic average lower than 75% attend an extra tutoring session each week. Team members have to learn fifteen advanced vocab- ulary words each month. Through the nutrition program, team members are encouraged to improve their diets. Fruits, vegetables and other healthy snacks are served at practices; soft drinks and processed foods are prohibited. In what is perhaps the organization’s most dra- matic enhancement, CitySquash unveiled an academic year elementary school program for a select group of third, fourth and fifth graders who show special promise as squash play- ers and students. The program is a once-a-week commitment for participants and incorporates the same academic, mentor- ing and community service components as the middle and high school programs, into which it will feed students. “We are thrilled about the elementary school program,” said exec- utive director Tim Wyant. “The earlier we begin working with children, the more they will be able to accomplish through CitySquash.” A Publication of CitySquash, Inc . An Urban Youth Enrichment Program Fall/Winter 2006 THE BRONX BOAST By Peter O’Toole Bronx, NY – CitySquash gets bigger and better every year. In September, just days after fond and tearful farewells were bid to the eight CitySquash team members headed to boarding school, CitySquash launched an elemen- tary school program and began preparing to welcome a new class of sixth graders, increasing academic year enrollment to fifty students and expanding the organization for a fourth straight year. CitySquash also opened a new office and learn- ing center in the Bronx, increased its full-time staff to six, and unveiled several new programs to enhance the CitySquash experience for the organization’s participants. Four years after CitySquash’s launch, the program continues to provide its students with rich educational opportunities. Nine of CitySquash’s twenty high school students, or forty-five percent of its first two classes of middle school graduates, now attend private schools on scholarships. Over the course of their high school careers, these students will receive more than one million dollars in financial aid, more than three times the size of CitySquash’s 2005-2006 budget. The average annual aid award per student is $30,000. Canterbury’s Jose Alvarez, Salisbury’s Edgardo Gonzalez, and Hill’s Tanesha Jackson, all tenth graders, are the members of CitySquash’s inaugural class attending pri- vate schools. Following in their footsteps are six CitySquash ninth graders, representing sixty percent of the program’s sec- ond class of ten students. Jennifer Arboleda attends Williston Northampton in Northampton, Massachusetts. Diana Edwards goes to Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, Connecticut. Freddy Hernandez is with Jose at Canterbury in New Milford, Connecticut. Katrina Intal studies at St. Paul’s in Concord, New Hampshire. Jesse Pacheco is at St. George’s in Newport, Rhode Island. To help oversee and implement theseprograms, we added two new people to our staff—a high school academics director and squash direc-tor—increasing our full-time staff to six. The student to staff member ratio is eight to one. Wealso opened a neighborhood learning center thathas computer work stations, quiet study spaces andvolunteer tutors on hand to provide team memberswith academic support in the evenings and on theweekends. In addition, the learning center is hometo presentations, student and parent meetings, andMovie Night, a showing of critically acclaimedfilms on Fridays.

The past four years have taught us that ifwe want to change lives, we have to continually striveto make our programming more intensive, more personal, more direct, more sustained. It was withthis in mind that we recently launched an academicyear elementary school program made up of a selectgroup of third, fourth and fifth grade students whoexcelled in our four-week day camp last summer. These talented and motivated young people will be apart of CitySquash for up to ten years, until theymatriculate in college. We have never been as excit-ed about CitySquash’s ability to make a difference.

When CitySquash launched in 2002, allsixteen of our team members were sixth graders atMiddle School 45 in the Bronx. Things havechanged. Middle School 45 remains CitySquash’sprimary partner school, but our fifty full-time academic year participants now range in age fromeight to sixteen years old and attend nineteen different public, private and parochial schoolslocated in and outside of New York, from P.S. 205right here on Fordham Road to St. Paul’s School inConcord, New Hampshire.

While our team members are increasinglyspread out, the intensity and richness ofCitySquash’s programming has not been diluted.More than ever before, CitySquash is committed toour philosophy of providing a relatively smallgroup of children with intensive year-round programming. CitySquash’s four original areas offocus—academic tutoring, squash, mentoring andcommunity service—have been joined by severalnew ones. Our middle school team members nowtake part in a literacy program every other Fridayafternoon. The cultural enrichment program expos-es CitySquashers to New York’s museums and performing arts shows. The speaker series programintroduces our students to business, political, sports, religious and literary leaders. The nutritionprogram teaches healthy eating habits. My Ode toBooks

I know my hands hurt when I hold you

You make me smart when I see you

You are everywhere I go

When you die I will cry

You are my best friend

You make me fall asleep at night

You sing songs

You can be famous sometimes

You can even be on a poster

But you are always my best friend

You will go place to place

You will go school to school

You may travel country to country

You mean a lot to me

It may take a long time to look through you

If I move, on my way to a new house

I will always have you beside me

Sometimes you’re scary,

But other times you’re very kind

Sometimes you talk about sports

You always make me shine

When I am asleep you are beside me

My brain can hear you

But my mouth loves you

You are so lazy but you say so much

Sometimes you say things very small,

I cannot hear you

But other times you say things very big

And I can hear you good and clear

I want you to know

You are my best friend

CitySquash gives me the excitement ofgoing to places that I have never gone to before. Ilike doing the trips to Greenwich Academy and stuff

like that. The Stuarts invite me to come to their houseto play squash with their son. Nate and his family are really fun and good to be around. When I went

to their house the last time, we played squash, thenwe went to the pool, and then we had a barbecue. We roasted marshmallows and made smores and weall played a ping pong game.

CitySquash also helps me learn how toswim. I swim in Greenwich at Ben Mandel’s house.I usually go with Jessica, Kingsley and Doris. Myteacher is Pam Baker. She is a lot of fun but at thesame time strict like a principal. She really teachesme how to swim.

It was on August 7th that Tim invited meto be a part of the elementary school program. I amexcited! I had to ask my mom for permission. Shesaid yes, as long as I keep doing my other work too(I do). I am really looking forward to the Boston andGroton trips. I am looking forward to meeting a lotof new friends.

Thank You and Welcome

CitySquash gratefully acknowledgesBrian Mathias for four years of dedicated service.Brian joined CitySquash in 2002 when the organiza-tion launched, working first as Director of Squashand then as Director of Community Service. Withhis deliberate, warm and gentle manner, Brian generously shared his love of squash, passion forteaching, and concern for others.

Brian was, as one staff member put it, the ‘conscience of CitySquash.’ He continually challenged the organization to define and be true toits core values. It is because of Brian that each yearCitySquashers raise thousands of dollars for AIDSand cancer research, volunteer hundreds of hours toclean up the Bronx and serve its poorest residents, and rally scores of other young people in the neighborhood to do their part for the community.Brian left CitySquash to pursue other coachingopportunities and a music career. We are pleasedthat he will remain involved as a volunteer. Thankyou for everything, Brian!

CitySquash warmly welcomes two newfull-time staff members. Kathy Hill graduated fromHarvard University in 2004 and taught English fortwo years at I.S. 162 in the South Bronx throughTeach for America. Kathy manages CitySquash’slearning center and runs the high school academicprogram. Bronx, NY—I learned about CitySquashfrom my older sisters. Nina tried out for the teamtwo years ago and made it. Then my other sister,Myriam, tried out the next year and she made it.When Nina and Myriam came home at night, Iwould see all of their gear. I was fascinated by all ofthe stuff. I was like, “I want to play squash.” But Iwasn’t old enough (I am nine). It made me feel a lit-tle sad that I couldn’t be on the team with them.

I got to play squash for the first time a yearago in the summer squash camp. Now I have doneCitySquash’s summer camp twice. At camp I have alot of fun and make new friends. The coaches andteachers treat me well. They help me get my confidence and do stuff I have never done before, ever.Sometimes, I say “I can’t do this.” But then I think ofCitySquash, and that helps me believe in myself.

The first day I played squash I felt reallyexcited (but I got really tired doing the warm up). Sincethen I have been playing squash whenever I can. Myfirst tournament was the Bronxville Future Stars. I triedmy best. I actually didn’t win a match in the tourna-ment, but I had a lot of fun and that is what counts.

Bronx, NY— Last fall, I found out that everyone on the CitySquash team was going to do The TerryFox Run, a five kilometer run for cancer research in Central Park. Five-kilometers sounded really far. Whenwe started training in our school yard, I found it hard to run for even ten minutes. I didn’t think I would be ableto run the whole 3.1 miles without walking. But we kept training. The more we ran, the easier it became.Terence gave us mental and physical drills so that we would not only be in shape, we would also have the confi-dence to make it through the race without giving up. He told us not to think about how hard the running felt, butto think about how proud we would feel when we crossed the finish line. The week before the race, we visitedthe reservoir in the park to do our final training run and to get an idea of what the run would look and feel like.

On the day of the race, we pinned on our numbers and met with mentors and friends who had cometo run with us. I was nervous and excited. During the run, I felt really, really tired, but I knew that I would beable to finish, and I never let myself stop to walk. Thanks to all of our training and all of Terence’s “You cando this! Don’t give up!,” the whole team got through the run. At first we thought the whole race was just oneof the ways our coaches could torture us, but after it was over we realized that it was actually another way forthem to show us that if we set our minds on something, we can achieve it.

Over the past three years, CitySquash has challenged me and helped me reach my goals. One biggoal that I set for myself was getting accepted to boarding school. Doing the applications, studying for theSSAT and making all the visits with Courtney was a lot of work, but I just did what CitySquash has taught meand focused on the steps to the finish line – March 10, the day the decision letters were sent. I couldn’t believeit when I found out that I got in to St. George’s.

I know that there will be a lot of new challenges at St. George’s, but I am ready for them. CitySquashhas taught me to play a really fun sport. It has helped me do well in school. It has taken me to tons of newplaces – Philadelphia, Boston, Williamstown, Groton, and more. I have stayed on college campuses and in thehomes of some really cool families, where I have met a lot of new people. I have made close friends on theteam and at tournaments. It has improved my manners, taught me hundreds of new vocabulary words, and evengiven me the chance to go to a great high school. But most of all, CitySquash has given me confidence. Mythree years on the team have helped me feel more comfortable trying new things and meeting people. Just likebeing at a starting line of a race, I always know that with the right preparation there is nothing that can keep mefrom reaching the finish.

Jesse Pacheco is a ninth grader at St. George’s School in Newport, Rhode Island. This article was adaptedfrom a speech Jesse delivered at the CitySquash Bash on May 18, 2006, at the Racquet and Tennis Club.

CitySquashers worked hard to make TheTerry Fox Run a successful service project, startingwith preparations five weeks before the October 15race. First, they learned about cancer and studiedTerry Fox, a cancer patient and leg amputee whoattempted in 1980 to run the length of Canada to raisemoney for cancer research. Sadly, Fox’s health failedduring the run and he had to stop after 143 days and3,339 miles. He died a year later at the age of 23. Inhis honor, millions of dollars are raised every year atTerry Fox Runs around the world.

Inspired by Fox’s courage and the knowl-edge that they could personally make a difference inthe fight against cancer, CitySquashers set out to dotheir part. They got on the phones and solicited peo-ple for donations. They asked their parents, teachers, and friends, as well as CitySquash supporters. It wasa real life experience in sales, and CitySquashers per-formed well. Bit by important bit, the money came in.

New York, NY – Community service iscentral to the CitySquash experience. Last year, theprogram’s sixth and seventh grade team members participated in five Saturday service projects, and theeighth and ninth graders completed more than thirtyhours of independent volunteer work. Projects rangedfrom picking up trash in the neighborhood to servingfood at a soup kitchen, from planting in a local gardento stacking books at the public library.

What made The Terry Fox Run in CentralPark special was how it brought together in one project so many different aspects of CitySquash’s programming and mission. Students conductedresearch, learned about a civic leader, developed salesskills, rallied others to contribute to a worthy cause, improved their physical fitness, worked as a team, andpersonally challenged themselves to do something difficult that they’d never done before.

Meanwhile, CitySquashers prepared physically for the 3.1 mile race, a distance almostnone had ever jogged before. At the first trainingsession, most team members struggled to run half amile without stopping. But day in and day out, theymet up after school to train together, and their fitness steadily improved.

CitySquash’s volunteers and mentorspitched in as well. Not only did many contribute per-sonally to CitySquash’s fundraising drive, quite a fewjoined the team and ran in the Saturday morning raceas well. Every CitySquasher completed the 3.1 miles, and the team raised over $2,000. “It was a greatopportunity,” community service director BrianMathias said, “for our team members to transfer theathletic discipline that they develop on the squashcourt to the service of a greater cause.”

Together,CitySquashers

give their all in giving

backAt the Terry Fox Run in Central Park, CitySquashers were joined by numerous mentors and volunteers, including Ryan Byrnes,

Rob Endelman, Marc Levin, Brannon Cook, Andrea Levin, Chris Wyant, Mariana Loose, Michael Brigoli, Phil Bednarczyk, Ana Guerrero, Kelly Sennatt and Sebastien Cahill.
