A Publication of Fuchun Primary School Newsletter 2012 Issue 2 Nov P roducing The Fuchun News has always been a labour of love as we put together and feature the various achievements of our Fuchunians. As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to celebrate what our Fuchunians have accomplished in this second issue. In June, the Fuchun Arts Nite was indeed a display of aesthetic talents by our pupils. The musical, Tapestry of Dreams, unfolded the story of three Fuchunians in pursuit of their dreams. Their journey served to inspire our pupils to have the perseverance and diligence to live out their dreams. The Pursuit of one’s dreams is echoed in the theme for our Speech and Prize-giving Day this year, Power of Dreams. Our Speech and Prize-giving Day will be held on 16 November. This is a significant event as we present awards to our pupils who have displayed academic excellence and exemplary conduct. The theme, Power of Dreams, serves to reinforce the importance for our pupils to know their goals in life and work towards realising them. In Fuchun, we help our pupils discover their strengths and aspirations and provide them the learning opportunities to achieve their goals and follow their dreams. We do this through both our Instructional and Co-curricular Programmes. This year, we would also like to highlight our new personal leadership programme for our pupils. We believe that every Fuchunian has the potential to be a leader as his or her thoughts, words and actions can have a positive influence on self and others. The programme was carried out with the Primary 3 pupils who attended a two-day workshop to acquire knowledge and skills in personal leadership as well as discover their leadership potential in order to contribute to the people around them. Producing The Fuchun News has always been a labour of love as we put together and feature the various achievements of our Fuchunians. As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to celebrate what our Fuchunians have

accomplished in this second issue.

In Fuchun, we help our pupils discover their strengths and

aspirations and provide them the learning opportunities to achieve their goals and follow their dreams.

In 2013, we will implement the programme to pupils in other levels.

The year will end with our Primary 6 pupils graduating and progressing to the next phase of their education. We would like to wish them success and may they realise their dreams and aspirations. Ever Onward, Fuchunians!

Fuchun Arts Nite: Tapestry of DreamsAn electrifying musical entitled “Tapestry of Dreams” featuring three Fuchunians unravelling their dreams... each child with her aspiration, each with her dream was put up. The musical inspired the audience to dream their dreams and live their dreams. The musical was held at the theatre of the Lasalle College of the Arts where Mr Hawazi Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Manpower and Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC (Marsiling), graced the event as our Guest-of-Honour. Besides celebrating our pupils’ achievements in the recent Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judgings, the biennial Fuchun Arts Nite showcased the multi-talents of our pupils in the performing arts and visual arts. It was also a display of our pupils’ diligence, perseverance and teamwork. It was indeed a memorable and an enjoyable evening.

As said by the famous poet, Victor Hugo, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” Indeed, 103 participants from seven N7 Cluster Schools expressed themselves melodiously through music at the 5th N7 Cluster Instrumental Competition held on 29 June at The Republic Cultural Centre. With the strong support of cluster funding, our school organised the event yearly to provide a platform for pupils to showcase their musical talents and give them opportunities to be appraised by local adjudicators.

The event was graced by Dr Yap Meen Sheng, Vice-Principal (Administration), School of The Arts (SOTA). Four notable professionals, namely, Associate Professor Chia Wei Khuan (Head of Performing & Visual Arts from NIE), Miss Yang Tien (Lecturer at SOTA), Mr Ang Chek Meng (Violinist from T’ang Quartet) and Ms Chang Hong (Clarinetist from Singapore Symphony Orchestra) adjudicated all the stunning performances that night.

The participating cluster schools included Endeavour Primary School, Fuchun Primary School, Wellington Primary School, Canberra Secondary School, Christ Church Secondary School, Fuchun Secondary School and Woodgrove Secondary School. That night, budding talents from these schools performed on various instruments ranging from the Chinese

This event was organised to showcase the top six performing Primary Brass and Symphonic bands that had won the Gold with Honours award. It was indeed another proud moment for all our pupils to participate in this event to showcase their talent. It was evident that their excellent stage presence and performance captivated the audience who were enthralled with their dance and songs. Not only did our pupils enjoy themselves, they also learnt the importance of perseverance and teamwork. It was indeed a memorable event.

Two Primary 6 teams took part in the 11th Elementz Science Project Competition and Exhibition which was held from 16 to 20 July at Anderson Secondary School. Preparation for the teams started with identifying a problem in their daily lives and conceptualising it to include investigation design and result analysis. One component of the competition also required the teams to present their work to a panel of judges. The teams focussed on topics which impact everyday lives such as how different designs on toilet paper affect their absorbency of spills and how common food items can be used to enhance plants’ growth.

One of our teams clinched the Bronze Award while the other team, Certificate of Commendation. The team members had gained invaluable experience during the process of taking part in this competition especially in presentation skills and carrying out scientific investigations. Working closely together with one another have also taught the members the importance of collaboration and active listening. It was also a good platform for the team members to learn from other schools’ projects and exchange pointers with their counterparts from the other participating schools.

F1 Race @ N7Fuchun Primary School participated for the second time in the F1 in Schools Experience Programme. This is a yearly event organised by the N7 Cluster and hosted at Woodgrove Secondary School. Nine of our Primary 5 pupils took part in a two-day programme in May.

The programme was separated into theory and hands-on sessions. The participants were given a lesson on the history of F1 car racing and some of the scientific concepts behind vehicles used in car racing. Part of the training also involved learning how to use a software – 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) to design their model race car.

In the practical session, participants were taught to prepare their car models in the school’s Design and Technology workshops. The processes included sanding the rough edges of the car models, painting and fitting in of the wheels for the car models.

Their final products were put to the ultimate test in the “F1 Race @ N7” held on 21 May. Our pupil Amos Ang (5B) clinched the award for the Fastest Car for the Primary Category. Our team members were also treated to a fun ride cum drive on the Go-Kart in the carpark of the hosting school.

The school’s Fun-with-Math programme aimed to intrigue pupils mathematically and arouse their interest in learning Mathematics during recesses where pupils could attempt the games numerous times. It provided them with opportunities to enhance their learning of mathematical concepts and developed positive attitudes towards Mathematics. Language incompetency did not hinder the pupils from taking part in the activities instead it provided them with another platform to interact with their peers mathematically. This year we have extended the programme to include Primary 3 pupils based on the positive feedback gathered from staff and pupils last year.

“Lights ready, cameras rolling and…action!” As soon the Primary 1 and 2 pupils hear the cue, they immediately get into their ‘acting’ mode because it is Drama time!

This year, we introduced a Speech and Drama Programme to enhance our English curriculum for the lower primary pupils. The programme aims to develop our pupils to be confident English speakers. The pupils learnt the different drama techniques like miming, role-play, improvisation as well as honed their listening comprehension and phonics skills.

From the end-of-programme presentations put up by every Primary 1 class, it was evident that our talented pupils displayed confidence and had a good grasp of the skills taught. There were also lots of laughter and affirmative nods from the parents who had taken time off to watch their children’s performances.

“It is a joy to see my child coming out of his ‘shell’. He has become so confident!” commented a parent whose son is in Primary 1F.

For the Primary 2 pupils, the programme culminated in the enacting of two short stories put up by Primary 2E and 2H. The wonderful performance, complete with beautiful props, eye-catching costumes and interesting dialogues, received thunderous applause from the delighted audience.

The English Department believes that learning English should be engaging and meaningful; hence various interactive activities and games are conducted for the lower primary pupils during their recesses each term. A few upper primary pupils were selected and trained as English Ambassadors to facilitate the sessions as well as guide the younger pupils. The activities held in the school library included, “Bingo”, “Doublets” and “Find the Missing Word”. We were encouraged by the pupils’ excitement and enthusiasm, and hope to inject more fun in the learning of English next year!

‘Conserving the environment is a worthy cause’ - our Green Monitors were nominated from all the classes and they underwent a session with the teachers-in-charge to help them learn to be more environmentally responsible in their everyday lives and at the same time, spread the message of conservation among their peers. The activities they had experienced included exploration of the Green Activist Corners of our school, a deeper understanding of the application of 3Rs practices (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and hands-on experience on paper-making using recycled materials. They would then lead and inspire their peers in school to do the same. Our Primary 6 Green Monitors also demonstrated their leadership by participating in a Kindergarten Outreach Programme, where they shared with the young children from the kindergartens, the importance of conservation during their school visit to our school. Our Green Efforts were also extended beyond our school. The Green Monitors participated in an interesting programme organised by National Environmental Agency (NEA) whereby they encouraged the public to save the Earth by reducing the use of plastic bags in various Dairy Farm Outlets. Some of our parents also participated in this meaningful event. All of us can start with practising the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, right here in school and at home!

School Exchange Programme - Wuxi, China

In May, a group of 41 Higher Chinese Language pupils, together with five teachers from the Chinese Language Department, went to Wuxi and Shanghai for a school exchange programme.

The group visited Yang Ming Primary and Yuying Primary in Wuxi. The pupils were given the opportunities to attend Chinese lessons in these two primary schools. They also built a toy car powered by the solar energy and practised Wushu during PE lesson.

Besides the school experience, we visited Zi Sha Pot Learning Centre, Silk Factory in SuZhou, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai Oceanarium, The Oriental Pearl TV Tower of Shanghai and other places of interest. We also visited the biggest bookstore in Shanghai and brought home many new and interesting books.

This was indeed a great learning experience for our pupils. They were exposed to different educational system in another country and were also able to meet new friends.

It was a day the Primary 5 pupils had been anticipating. Everyone was excited and could not wait to get to Marina Bay. It was time to show their love and respect for Singapore. The rain did not dampen the pupils’ spirit. Teachers and pupils sang with gusto, moved and shouted joyously to the familiar beat and rhythm of the NE songs in particular, Home and Love at First Light which is this year’s National Day Parade theme song. Our school celebrated our nation’s 47th birthday on 8 August. We started off the celebrations bright and early with the observance ceremony. It was lovely to hear the entire school population reciting their parts in unison. The scouts and the brownies then marched in with our State flag during the flag procession. Our Primary 1 to 3 pupils also had their lower primary games day that morning. The pupils enjoyed themselves tremendously in each event. They showed true sportsmanship. Our school also invited Metta Home to be a part of our celebrations. They took part in some of the games with our pupils. We ended off our celebrations in the school hall by singing along to the tunes of our favourite national day songs. The pupils also watched a montage of their teachers wishing our country a very happy birthday!

This year, we celebrated Teachers’ Day on 31 August. The event was organised by a group of prefects together with the parent support group (P.A.C.E.S) and the administration staff of the school.

Embracing the 3R concept taught by their teachers – Reuse, Reduce and Recycle - the prefects tested their friends’ skills to come up with the most creative outfit to dress the teachers using recycled materials such as newspapers and yakult bottles. The teachers’ singing skills were also tested in the game “Do You Know The Lyrics?”

The Most Caring Teacher Award was also presented during the celebration to 11 teachers. The celebration ended with the Principal, Mrs Yap Dai Jee, leading the teachers in renewing their Teachers’ Pledge. Thank you, teachers, for your dedication and commitment.

To improve the safety and well-being of pupils and staff, our school has installed the awnings along the common corridors to prevent the rain from coming in. In addition, our music room has been extended this June to provide a more conducive environment for learning and band practices. Moreover, we have provided chairs at the waiting points for parents and guardians to provide comfort for them.

Our String Ensemble went for an Overseas Music Exchange Programme this November at Melbourne, Australia. The music exchange programme aimed to provide a platform for our pupils to hone their skills and nurture their musical excellence. They attended a master class and visited two schools where they could exchange music learning experiences. Through this authentic and hands-on programme, our pupils have widened their horizon, understood the cultural differences and established friendship with their Australian counterparts.
