TRIP TO CHICAGOThe Challenge American History class is traveling to Chicago for its annual trip. Our learning opportunity will include a historic segway tour of downtown Chicago, taking part in the 100-year history of Wrigley Field, and experiencing some culture by shopping and walking historic Michigan Avenue. As usual, we hope the weather will cooperate on May 16!
be nice. Spirit WeekApril 28 - May 2Monday: Pajama Day
Tuesday: Dress “Nice” Day
Wednesday: Wildcat/School Spirit Day
Thursday: Pink & Green Day
Friday: Wear Black Day
The Be Nice team leaders planned a fun and exciting spirit week during the last week of April. Each day was highlighted with a theme to represent and support the Be Nice program that was launched earlier this fall. On Monday, students wore their pajamas to represent being comfortable and being yourself. Tuesday, students dressed “nice” to practice looking, thinking, acting and feeling good. Wildcat pride was represented on Wednesday, and the school was full of green and white. Thursday, students wore their neon green and pink in support of the Be Nice theme colors. To conclude spirit week, students wore black on Friday for the school-wide grande finale, The Flyover.
However, there was just one complication for the flyover--the weather did not cooperate! The event was cancelled and rescheduled for Friday, May 9, weather permitting! We were hoping to include the flyover picture in this edition of “The Cat’s Meow,” but look for it in the future on the Jenison Junior High website.
The Mental Health Foundation hosts a yearly event referred to as "The Flyover" for all schools in Ottawa and Kent county who participated in the Be Nice program during the school year. In this event, junior high students and the staff of each school file onto the football field and use their bodies to spell out the words “be nice.” Our Jenison students plan to wear black shirts to spell the words, and the staff will wear pink to make the period at the end. Let’s hope the helicopter will be able to fly over to take an aerial photo of the students’ design. This image will be used next year to continue to promote the Be Nice program both at the junior high and with the Mental Health Foundation.
This was an exciting opportunity for students to show both pride in their school and the Be Nice program.

HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCEStudents in Challenges and Choices are practicing the assertive strategies they learned in class by participating in an activity called "Rocker and Rollers." The Rollers try to roll over a peer pressure on the Rocker, and the Rocker must repeatedly refuse their request using the strategies they were taught. Students use their hands to feel the power struggle that happens when someone is trying to pressure you. But, most importantly, the Rocker feels the confidence that comes from practicing "saying no" as they refuse their partner. The Rocker title represent someone who will rock the boat and not go along with the negative peer pressure.
Some role play examples include the pressure to give up some money at lunch, cheating on a test, and sneaking out to T.P. at a sleepover. Mrs. Mervenne reports, "Students love the hour of actually speaking their assertive skills out loud instead of just writing their responses to pretend situations on paper.”
Pictured are the Rocker and Rollers
from Mrs. Mervenne’s second hour Challenges
and Choices class.

AUTISM AWARENESS
MONTHApril was the official Autism Awareness Month for not only our country, but for the whole world. The Jenison Junior High LINKS class celebrated our own Autism Awareness Week at the junior high during the first week of April.
The LINKS students were able to choose what they wanted to do to get more information out to their peers about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A few of the activities chosen were making daily announcements about autism over the intercom and in classrooms, decorating the display case in the front hallway, making posters to support autism, face painting blue ribbons in order to show support of autism awareness and raising money to donate to an autism organization by selling blue water bottles. On Wednesday, April 2, many of the students and staff at Jenison Junior High participated in the global event, "Light It Up Blue!" This is an event that celebrates world autism awareness.
It was a fabulous week with great support from all students and staff!

DONATIONS NEEDED!
Our art teacher, Mr. Nate Greenwood, needs paper towel (not toilet paper) tubes. Please send your donations to school with your child for drop off in Room 34 or bring them to the main office.
"Lines In Space" sculptures are based on the style of Minimalism, which was a movement in art that still resinates in art work today. Students use paper towel tubes, hot glue and paint to complete the sculptures. They used the tubes to create 3D lines that create unique forms and invade physical space.
