Time to consider Nominating for Committeeow is the crunch time for the election of the new BMUG Committee. It is always the same few members who put up their hands to help run our Group. We just need a “different few” this time round.

Being a Committee Member is not a hard task. You can always get away on your planned holidays, or to simply babysit the Grand Kids when it is needed. We cannot accept the old excuse, “I’m too busy”... etc. That is always the perfect excuse, but it is just those people who will make the time and work efficiently for the Group.

I will stay on, in any role that the Committee wants me to perform. If more people come forward to form the committee, then I am also happy to stand down. Geoffery Waite has advised that he will nominate again for the position of Treasurer.

We need the following positions filled:President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer

and at least three General Committee Members.

UNDER OUR CONSTITUTION WE MUST HAVE A COMMITTEE ELECTED.

Failing this BMUG has to be wound up and all your money in BMUG is LOST.

That is the rules! Happy Computing Peter Oakley

Dear Peter,

I have just been reading the latest July Newsletter. A great job again, but you must "contain" yourself and make it smaller, however, I think that will be ignored! You certainly have me interested in three of your reviews:

• The iPhoto Library Manager; • The Picture Collage Maker;• The Cygnett charger.

I will certainly have a look at the video Tutorial on Picture Collage Maker. From the examples that you have shown in the Newsletter, I reckon that could be a good possibility "with a difference", for my photo albums,"Scrapbooking" style.

Also, I love making my own birthday cards on the computer. I print them out on glossy photo paper and I think that the Picture Collage could give me a new slant on that.

I will also download the free trial of iPhoto Library Manager.

Might make these projects to look at while we are at Thailand soon with our free WiFi.Thanks for putting in so much time reviewing these products. It must take you hours and hours to do all this.

Kind Regards,

Marg.

Hi Peter,

I've just finished reading the July Newsletter. I like the way things are set out and I do learn a lot from them. Congratulations  on your good work.

Best Wishes,

Liz.

Hi Peter,

Another great newsletter.I’m interested in the iPhoto and Picture Collage Maker, as if I buy these it may make me reorganise my photos much more effectively. My trouble is I’m having trouble with my computer (which I won’t go into, as I haven’t time) so I think I’m going to have to rethink what I’ve got and if I upgrade, where to?Minor problems, but I do enjoy the newsletters and I always seem to pick up something to help me.

Cheers,

Bev.

Editor’s Note:Thank you to the members who have given me some feed back. Your encouraging comments are most appreciated. More articles for the Newsletter would be gratefully accepted.

This App Raised Over $1 Million Doing Almost Nothing!

To be clear, the recently launched Yo app does something. In fact, it does exactly one thing. The Yo app, true to its name, allows users to tell their friends “yo.” Nothing more,

nothing less. At last check, it had made its creator over $1.2 million USD in investments.

It also has had over a million downloads, by people who presumably miss the days of poking on Facebook. That is an impressive feat, considering it took creator Moshe Hogeg a mere eight hours to create.

He admitted to Business Insider that he found the app’s success a little crazy too. He said “Sometimes you see a movie and you say, ‘This sh.. is so crazy, it can’t really happen’. But sometimes reality is so crazy, it suppresses every movie.”

According to Business Insider, Hogeg created the app because he wanted a simple way to get in touch with his wife and his assistant on his smartphone, rather than using text. Because apparently, texting encouraged longer conversations than Hogeg had time for, and email chains were burdensome. The ‘Yo’ would let the person know they were needed or being thought of.

Hogeg admitted that the idea was dumb. But, what if we asked ourselves, ‘If we didn’t know what Yo was or what it did, and if we just examined the data and the usage numbers like it was any other startup, would we invest in it?’. Touché.

Dumb or not, it has taken off.

If you need me, you know where you can “yo” at me.

Can you still burn movies to disc in an era where Apple no longer supports iDVD?

I was recently asked whether I had burned a movie to a DVD in this era of post-iDVD.

The answer is yes, as I still have iDVD installed on my iMac.Although Apple decided some time ago that iDVD was ‘Old Technology’, I can state that it still works with OS X Mavericks.

Apple no longer sells iLife 11 (which has a copy of iDVD), however you can still buy it from Amazon or else borrow it from a friend and install it on your computer.

I cannot advise how long iDVD will continue to work as it is now an unsupported app by Apple. When OS X Yosemite is released later this year, we may well discover that iDVD will no longer work.

However, iDVD is not your only option for burning a movie to DVD.As reported elsewhere in this Newsletter, Roxio has just released Toast 12 Titanium which contains new features including live screen capture, support for exporting video to a

greater number of devices and the ability to burn HD videos to DVD. Like iDVD it converts video to a compatible format and offers menu templates. It is easy to use, does far more than burn discs and gets the job done.

I have been a great fan of Roxio Toast for many years, since first being introduced to it by Vice President Dick. This latest release has really ‘blown me away.' I highly recommend it to members.

There is also a free option called Burn, which I have never used.

It allows you to burn data, audio and video discs. It does not provide any fancy menu templates or Themes. All you get is Titles, Navigation buttons and little else.

What app you choose really depends on how you want your resulting disc to look.

Tricks for Mail App in Mac OS X Here are eight of the best tricks for Mail App in OS X as outlined in OS X Daily.

How to Print a List of Folder Contents in Finder WindowIt used to be straightforward to print a list of your Documents in any particular Folder. You would just click on a folder, click on print, and the list of files/Documents would print. However, things have changed and it is no longer a straight forward process. Here are the basic steps to achieve this process:Open System Preferences. Click on Print & Scan, then double click on the printer you want to use (in this case I only have one printer connected to my Mac), which opens your printer window.

Go to the Folder that contains the file list you want to print.

Drag that folder itself into the printer window,(in this case Canon MP970). This process generates a preview document listing all documents in that particular folder.

Click on Print, or to use a different printer, select a different printer (in top drop down box).

You can also click on PDF to make a copy which you can then print on a different printer. This PDF selection eliminates your need to repeat the whole process if you need to select a new printer. Now you have a PDF copy that you can save and print whenever you like.

I find this process particularly handy, when I want to clean up and rearrange my files.

How to dismiss Mac App Store notifications

I recently received the following question-

“Quite often when I start up my Mac I see an alert about application updates waiting for me. Some of them I don’t want. Is there anything I can do about shutting off these alerts?”

The answer is yes.

Start by launching System Preferences, selecting App Store, and disabling the Automatically Check For Updates option. This action will stop the nudging. However, it also means that you may miss out on some important updates. To help avoid that, you could create a weekly calendar alarm or reminder that reminds you to manually check for updates. You do that by opening that same App Store preference and clicking on the Show Updates button.

There are also one or two things you can do within the App Store application.

Launch it, click on the Updates tab and locate updates that appear under the Software Update heading. Click the More link and then Control-click (right-click) on any updates that you don’t want.

For example, printer driver updates that you will never use. A Hide Update command will appear. Select it and that update disappears. (You can make it reappear by choosing Store > Show All Software Updates.)Regrettably this option is not available for all updates. Third-party updates will display no such command and remain in the list.

You also have the option to hide items in the Purchases tab. This is something you may want to do if you never intend to install an application that you previously bought years ago.To do that Control-click (right-click) on an item in the list and choose Hide Buy. (You can later unhide these items by choosing Store > View My Account, logging into your account, locating the Hidden Purchases entry, clicking Manage, clicking the Unhide button that appears next to each hidden application, and then clicking the Done button.

• Set up your iPad using iCloud;• Dictate text or commands with Siri®;• Organise apps and manage downloads;• Listen to iTunes Radio;• Take photos and apply filters.

This is a good introduction to the iPad and how to navigate the displays. It is especially handy if there are features you don't use often and are likely to forget how to get there and what you need to enter.

Yosemite, the new version of OS X is due to be released in late October. It is a dramatic shift for OS X and one of the most comprehensive overall changes for Apple’s desktop Operating System since its inception. The changes permeate the look and feel of the Operating System, and offer up a host of new features, with perhaps the most notable among those being the new Continuity features that bring iOS devices and Macs even closer together, with functionality flowing between the two on a number of tasks that make sense for both platforms to share seamlessly.

Many of the apps that I review do not stay on my iMac for very long. After using Circus Ponies Notebook during the last couple of weeks, I have become fully aware of its great potential and I will definitely be keeping it. This Notebook offers many convenient features to assist you in your daily tasks. The generous 30 day free trial makes it worth trying out to see if it is a good option for you. It is available from the website for $49.95 USD or from the App Store for $74.99 AUD. Peter Baldwin

The Multidex section at the back of every Notebook helps you find notes quickly by whatever you can remember about them. Here, the Text page shows all the notes containing the word “amateurs,” and where those notes live in the Notebook. Clicking a blue bullet takes you to the note. There are Multidex pages for dates, highlighting, keywords, file attachments, action items, and more.

What I like about FotoMagico 4:If you like to show off your photographs and video to family and friends, then in my opinion FotoMagico 4 is the application for you. If you have used iMovie, then you will find that many of the procedures are very similar and therefore you should have no trouble in adapting to using this app.

The strong point of this software is clearly its interface. It is well thought out and really intuitive and everything behaves exactly as expected.

Drag-and-drop is supported in most places and multitouch trackpad gestures work as they would on an official Apple app. All content is rendered in real time.

I particularly like layers which is a new feature. Each slide can support up to six layers of still images, video and titles, each with its own animation. This means that you can have the background image zoom out, while other images can each move left-to-right, up-and-down, etc. Also, a layer can be isolated by locking it so that it can be moved without affecting other elements.

Another new addition is the Timeline with Audio Waveform. While the Storyboard is still available, the Timeline/Audio Waveform combination makes it much easier to fine tune adjustments. Audio markers can be inserted a couple of different ways, including by running the slideshow, clicking on

the audio track and tapping the M key to mark when a slide should advance to the next image. Given that the rhythm of a slideshow and audio track is almost instinctive, tapping the M key seems the most natural way to time slide transitions

Import and export options have been well thought out and should suit the majority of users. Both Storyboard and Timeline options work seamlessly.

I believe that the main advantage of this app over iMovie is the added customisation and different approach in the "in-pictures" effect, namely between two transitions. You simply define the initial and the final stage for your pictures and the program will animate accordingly.

The only downside is that the app is relatively expensive at $129.99, but I believe that it is worth the money.

Overall, I found FotoMagico 4 to perform as advertised and it far exceeded my expectations.

This application is the most skilful slideshow creation tool for the Mac that I have tried. It will be my number one choice for use in the future, particularly now that it is rumoured that Apple may be ceasing support for iMovie soon.

QuickTip: Quickly find your Mac’s User Manual. You can get to the PDF file for the user manual specific to your Mac by going to About This Mac in the Apple Menu. Look for Support at the top of the window and click it. Then click User Manual. This will take you to the online PDF file. The manual is the same as it was when you first bought your Mac, so don't expect to find updated information about the latest version of OS X.
