New Life in the Garden The Children’s Home campus has a history of farming, providing food for the staff and residents during the early days in Catonsville. After many reattempts, the TCH Garden is thriving once again. The fenced plot is filled with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, basil, and tall corn stalks. All the ground preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, and cooking becomes a delicious learning experience. Our staff gardener, Mary Moore, is leading the agricultural effort with an abundance of assistance from TCH residents.

Message
from the
CEO
“Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” – Will Rogers
The Annual Meeting in June is an opportunity update
the public on the progress and challenges of The
Children’s Home during the past year while looking
ahead to the new fiscal year. We are serving more youth
than in recent years, but are still below the number of
residents it takes to balance the budget. Public
awareness is growing with the hope that awareness will
evolve into support. There is also optimism that we are
able to transform programming, which will increase our
relevancy and stability.
During the past year, we have placed a greater emphasis
on community partnerships and outcomes
documentation to strengthen current programs and
strengthen our position to receive funding for additional
programs.
We are forging a new paradigm of partnerships at The
Children’s Home with the ProNet Alliance. We are
working with a number of service providers in the area
to assist in providing mental health, medical services,
legal assistance, specialized education, and community
outreach.
Presently, we are reviewing options from a strategic
planning perspective. It is with excitement and serious
consideration that we reach beyond traditional
programming to rethink what is possible within the
Home’s mission.
As always, we look forward to your support and
assistance to meet the critical needs of the children,
youth, and families.

TCH Resident, Carrie, and TCH staff member, Cheri
Vaughan, were invited on an exclusive field trip to the
stables to meet champion Smarty Jones (2004 Kentucky
Derby and Preakness winner) and other champions.
Carrie took away many good memories and a
commemorative statue of Smarty Jones. She is an avid
horsewoman who participates in the Home’s weekly
therapeutic riding sessions at TCH.

A view of the countryside at FM Cottage It is not a portal to another world, but a mural on a wall in
the FM Cottage. Local mural artist and TCH art
instructor, Mark Selby, designed the work and directed a
number of TCH residents in the actual painting. The
painting was a grand kick-off to the Summer Art Program
at the Home.
Thank you to Narcissus Salon in Catonsville
for donating the funds for the mural.
We hope to see everyone back on May 7, 2016!

Olympic Gold Medalist hosts Think, Work, Play Day!
Lisa Willis, former WNBA and USA Team (Gold Medalist),
hosted a full camp day of activities for more than 25
residents. “Can we do this again?” was asked by many of the
residents. “We like this!”
Residents learned the fundamentals of basketball. Think,
Work, Play activity stations featured agility, strategy, and
team training. Rest periods consisted of circle-seated
discussions on topics such as perseverance and overcoming
life challenges. The learning and fun was topped off with an
exciting game featuring residents vs the Willis staff and TCH
staff.
Ms. Willis appreciated the opportunity and hospitality. She
looks forward to hosting another session of Think, Work, Play
in the near future.
