Country Grand Marshals: John and Lois Smith

John Smith and Lois McDermott have known each other since childhood as their families lived in Epworth and Placid. During their elementary years, Lois was instructed at the St. John’s-Placid one-room school house, and John was taught in the Taylor-Epworth one-room school house. They continued their education in the same high school building in Epworth. After high school, Lois earned a nursing degree at the Mercy School of Nursing and began working for four years at the Medical Associate Clinic on Main Street in Dubuque. John began his career with Greiner Construction before enlisting in the army along with four other Epworth men, after enjoying a night on the town together. The enlistment landed John in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, for boot camp and then in Germany for sixteen months. After the service, he worked for another year in construction before being hired by John Deere in Dubuque. A career that eventually spanned thirty-one years.

In 1960, John and Lois’ paths crossed again, and on October 15th they were married and settled on Asbury Street in Dubuque, before moving to Bill Bahl’s farm, then Dutch Lane, eventually working their way back to Epworth and buying the farm they now have lived on for 50 years. Interestingly, John was able to buy back the farm his grandfather had owned twenty-two years earlier.

Besides working alongside John on the farm, Lois continued to work part-time at the Clinic and became very involved in St. Patrick’s parish activities, including singing in the choir, Altar and Rosary events, helping establish the Epworth Food Bank, and organizing the publishing of the first St. Patrick Parish cookbook. Together they raised five children: Mike, Sara, Marty, Peter, and Jennifer. Their children have gifted them with 33 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Together, they have watched farming change from actual horse power to tractors with 200 horsepower motors. The road in front of their farm was resurfaced from gravel to blacktop. Long gone are the opportunities to dance at Melody Mill or in the top level of the first Epworth Fire Station (now the location of the Epworth Family Chiropractic office), while spending intermissions at Dougherty’s or Murray’s tap. In spite of all the changes, they can’t imagine living anywhere else but Epworth. John and Lois Smith—models for all who live their lives caring about family, community, and the earth.

City Grand Marshals: Tom and Brenda Wickham

Epworth was our home for nearly 50 years. We first rented the Wells Knapp house under the railroad viaduct, then the Elmer and Clara Rolwes farm house, and lastly our beloved house on the hill (Earl Kidder’s home that the Epworth pioneer built for his wife Hazel more than 100 years ago).

From the woods to the north, the cornfields to the west, and, most importantly, Epworth Main Street to the south, we will always remember Silker’s Store, Divine Word, St. Pat’s, WD Schools, the Bobcat Drive-in, Pizza Factory, Ross DX, Locker Plant, and the Firemen’s Picnic. As Epworth historian and legend, John Schwendinger, wrote in Did Those Walls Ever Talk! what a wonderful story our house would tell of a great town helping us raise our eight children, pets, and 26 grandchildren.

Town & Country MusiciansA big part of Epworth’s Town & Country Days has always been the music. Each year seems to add more and more of it. Listed below is some information about the individuals and bands that will be playing at this year’s event.

    Tower Park Musicians

Melanie Devaney will be playing from 5 to 6:30 PM on Friday night. “She is a folk-Americana singer-songwriter from the small town of Epworth. . . Classically trained in piano and holding a degree in Creative Writing, her songs are stories from her own life’s adventures and the cast of characters she has met and created along the way. . . . Devaney strives to use her music to inspire others to make the world a little better through simple acts of compassion and understanding. . . .The result is elegant music that is enjoyed by audiences from all walks of life.” (www.melaniedevaney.com) MISSISSIPPI BAND will be playing from 7-11 PM on Friday evening. “In 1972 Dwayne Fudge and Bill “Crickett” Davis started the country/blues/rock band which has had many members. The original band members included Fudge (guitar and vocals), Davis (bass guitar), Dave Hummel (guitar and vocals), Charlie Troy (drummer), and Mark Oberfell (pedal steel, banjo, and fiddle).

After winning the Sundown Country Music Festival, they went on the road from 1977 to 1983 playing concerts with Hank Williams Jr., Ernest Tubb, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sha Na Na, and Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. The band was hired in 1981 to appear in the movie “Take This Job and Shove It.” . . . In February 2010 it was announced that the original band would be inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association Hall of Fame.” (Encyclopedia Dubuque www.encyclopediadubuque.org)

Nathan Casey will be playing from 11 AM until 1 PM on Saturday. Nate is a 14 year-old pianist and guitar player. He lives in rural Epworth and attends Seton school.

Mark Zalaznik will be playing from 3 until 5 on Saturday. “Mark has been playing guitar since 2005 and has been singing since he could talk. Mark performs at birthday parties, barn dances, coffee shops, bars, charity, and many more events! His music catalog includes country music and some classic soft rock.” (2018 Y105 is part of the PopCrush Network, Townsquare Media, Inc. All rights reserved.)

    City Grand Marshals, continued

Tennis was a major part of our family life going back to the “Courts for Sports” fund-raising of the late 1970’s and the building of the present courts in 1981. For more than thirty years our family taught tennis lessons and ran tournaments for area kids and adults. When asked last year to help re-do the courts, we answered by raising $11,000 to help color the tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts. Thanks to all of you who contributed to this project.

2018 will see our family coming back for Town & Country Days to duplicate our children’s 2005 “Return to Epworth” when we celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We are truly honored to celebrate our 58th anniversary with our Epworth friends: the wonderful people that live and work in this remarkable town.

Brenda Wickham (L) and Tom Wickham (R) present a check to Mayor Sandy Gassman (Middle) to update the sport courts

The Flying Buffalo’s from Nashville will alternate playing with The Cody Hicks Band. The Flying Buffalo’s band members include Johan Stone, Barry Stone, Jordan Harazin, Tommy Leland and Daniel Pratt. “Flying Buffalo’s, as a band, represents the essence and energy of the current musical climate in Nashville; the converging sounds of the traditional country honky-tonk mentality with the new wave of gritty East Nashville rock & roll. Their sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, vocally, with Beatles-esque harmony and a swampy, Rolling Stones-meets-CCR rhythm section. Country influences like Waylon Jennings. Willie Nelson, and Chris Stapleton radiate through in Flying Buffalo’s songwriting, instrumentation, and lyrics.” (www.flyingbuffaloes.com)

Originally from Marshalltown Iowa, The Cody Hicks Band is made up of Cody Hicks, Matt Vavroch,Trevor Parrish, Matt Lenz, Coleton Tompkins, and Trevor Long, “Cody Hicks is an original act that also books cover shows. The band is booking four hour shows for bars and private parties, and are also available to provide support for national acts traveling through the area. They have opened for acts such as Brothers Osborne, Casey Donahew, Granger Smith, Phil Vassar, Chase Rice, Tyler Farr, and Trace Adkins. Made up of rural Iowa boys ready to rock out all night long, the band is adding songs to their set list every day.” (www.codyhicksmusic.com)

    Hoerner Earns Award

Laura Hoerner, who has completed her 32nd year as a secretary at Western Dubuque High School, was awarded the 2018 Brenda and Tom Wickham Educational Service Award this spring. The award was established in 2002 and recognizes a WD staff member who exemplifies excellence and a commitment to students and education. Through her secretarial position, Laura has touched the lives of many of Epworth’s past and and current citizens. Congratulations, Laura!

    WD Booster Club Project

If you haven’t taken a stroll up to Buckman Field lately, you may be surprised at the changes taking place. The WD Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring a project that will add an archway at the base of the walk up to the field with “wall of fame” columns displaying personalized memorial bricks. Also being built is a new ticket booth with a connecting wall to the concession stand. It’s not too late to add your name to the archway. Various size brick are available with donations ranging from $50 to $800. If you have questions, email [email protected]

New Multi-Sports Courts Completed Thanks to the efforts of a grant and a Go-Fund-Me page organized by Tom and Brenda Wickham, the old tennis courts across from Tower Park have been resurfaced and painted. Sports-minded children and adults now have two tennis courts, three pickle-ball courts, and two basketball hoops to play on to burn some calories and stay in shape. A bag with four pickle-ball paddles and outdoor balls has been hung on the fence for players to use on the pickle-ball courts. Please return items to the bag when finished playing so others can also use.

Another addition to the Tower Park is a concrete ping-pong table located to the south of the Phil Silker pavilion. Balls and paddles will be available to those who rent the pavilion, or players can bring their own equipment to play ping-pong while at the park. The net offers a dedication to deceased Epworth mayor, Tom Gassman.

    Message from the MayorSandy Gassman

On behalf of the City of Epworth citizens, I want to extend a sincere thank you to Jacob Reuter for his dedicated service to the City. Jacob has served as a council member, as mayor, and on several committees. We appreciate the expertise he brought to all of these positions, and hope he will consider serving again sometime in the future.

Welcome to new council member, Bryce Barrett, who was appointed by the Council at the July 11th meeting. Bryce will be finishing Jacob’s term.

I also want to thank the Epworth Garden Club for their work throughout town and especially in the cuppalo area. Water line work caused damage to some of the beds. The garden club redesigned the area and spent many hours planting, weeding, and using their green thumbs to make the entrance into Epworth inviting and attractive. Your dedication is appreciated by all who live here and all who visit.

The painting of the new game courts have been completed and the courts are being used by many people. I’ve seen several people playing basketball, as well as tennis. Pickleball is played on most Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30. There is also a beginner group that meets most Wednesday evenings at 6:00. We would like to get more people involved, so on Friday, August 3rd as part of Town & Country Days, from 5 PM - 8 PM, we will have all three pickleball courts available for those who wish to learn or play pickleball. The wonderful part of this sport is that all ages can play from 9 to 90 and regardless of skill level. If you think you may be interested, stop over and watch or play. There will be extra balls and paddles available for your use. Come and enjoy learning a new sport, while enjoying the other Town & Country Friday night food and activities.

2017-2018 WD Spring & Summer Sports Epworth Students The Western Dubuque High School 2017-2018 year seems like it’s already history! But for those who finished spring and summer sports it feels like yesterday. As a matter of fact, some of the summer sports for the season are just finishing as this is written!

For those students who worked very hard on both year end studies and sports during the heat of the summer—good for you! It can be challenging knowing everyone else is out and about having fun. Although, being a part of a team is fun, too!

Those listed below and on the next page represented our Epworth Community as they participated in spring and summer sports. Thanks for representing us well through your participation and good sportsmanship!

    Message from the MayorSandy Gassman

Epworth Police DepartmentJames Kauffmann, Epworth Police 563-876-3050

The Epworth Police Department hopes everyone is having a great summer. With Town & Country Days close, here is a reminder: Golf Carts and ATV’s/UTV’s are not allowed on the designated truck routes. These routes include the following: Main Street, Center Avenue, 5th Avenue, Jacoby Drive, 3rd Avenue NW, 2nd Street, and 1st Avenue NE. Following this law is a way to keep this event fun and safe for all.

Please be conscientious of grass clippings and other yard waste being deposited in the streets. Epworth Code 8.16.160 states: “No person, firm, or corporation shall throw, rake, deposit, dump, drop, or spill litter, animal waste, or foreign material (this includes grass clippings) upon streets, sidewalks, right of way, or any public or private property within the City limits. This is considered littering and is punishable by a $100 fine.”

Going on vacation? The Epworth Police Department can check the exterior of your property while you are gone. Just send an e-mail to [email protected]. Provide your name, address, date leaving, date of return, a vehicle description of anyone checking the inside of your property and a contact phone number(s). This is a free service provide by the Police Department.

Some Epworth citizens may still have a few legally purchased fireworks left from your Fourth of July celebrations. The City of Epworth has set the following policies regarding the use of fireworks within Epworth City limits:

    a. A person shall not use or explode consumer fireworks on days other than July 1st through July 8th. A person shall not use or explode consumer fireworks at times other than between the hours of 9:00 AM and 11:00 PM.b. A person shall not use consumer fireworks on real property other than that person’s real property or the real property of a person who has consented to the use of consumer fireworks on that property.c. The City Council may grant a permit for the display of display fireworks when the display fireworks will be handled by a competent operator.

For statutory provisions relating to the possession, sale, transfer, and purchase of fireworks, see Code of Iowa 727.2.

Finally, the start of school is just around the corner, which means young drivers and pedestrians filling our streets and sidewalks on their way to and from school. Please be extra cautious when driving as many of these new drivers are inexperienced.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Jacoby Library at Divine Word College In the last issue of the Voice of Progress there was a reminder that Epworth has two libraries for citizen’s use. For those of you who have not been to the Mathew Jacoby Library at Divine Word College lately, here is a little information about the physical organization of the library.

The Matthew Jacoby Library has two main parts on the second floor of Divine Word College: the Main Library (Room 225) area and the Magazine Reading Room (Room 201) area.

The Main Library AreaThe main part of the library houses all of the books, DVDs, and CDs, and has many important tools for your use, such as reference materials.

Everyone needs a library card to borrow materials. You will need to see Dan Williams, the main librarian to obtain one of these. After that, as you enter the Main Library, the Self-Check Station is on your right. With your library card, you can borrow library materials, renew library materials, and look at the status of your library account. Also on the right is the Circulation Window. There is a slot here where you can return any library items that you no longer need. Just ahead are the two library eCatalog (electronic catalog) workstations. These two workstations allow you to search for library materials and access your library account. Just to the left, you will find a permanent display where you can browse through new items that the library has recently added to their collection. There is also a revolving display stand containing books that you might want to read for your enjoyment. Beyond all of this is the library’s main reading area, with its tables, chairs, and carrels for studying, reading, or just plain relaxing. Please be considerate of others who are studying.

The library’s books are kept in two large sections on two levels, the Main Floor and the Mezzanine.

Books with call numbers 700-999 are located on the Mezzanine of the library, and are accessible via the stairs. In the back corner are works of fiction having a call number beginning with “F” (F = Fiction), and collections of short stories identified with “SC” (SC = Story Collection). All great books for leisure reading.

Next time, a stroll through the Magazine Reading Room.

Epworth Fire DepartmentChief Thomas I. Berger, Epworth FireThe Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen, our non-profit corporation, just wrapped up another successful fundraising season. For the first time in a many years, Mother Nature impacted each event. For the dance, we want to thank everyone for their tremendous support in returning the envelopes, attending, or sending in donations. The “Road Kill” band did a great job entertaining the crowd, and Jack Silker and crew provided tasty, grilled sandwiches. The 70th annual picnic was supposed to start with the Epworth American Legion members raising the flag; instead, we started with a severe thunderstorm warning. Fortunately for us, the rain subsided and the crowd arrived. The silent auction remains the profit center of the evening and that would not be possible without the generosity of donors, and the bidding on these items by those in attendance. Our organization is extremely fortunate to receive such great community support, and it allows us to continue to serve our community. We thank you for your cash donations, attendance, working in the stands, auction item donations, bidding on the items, and for being there to support us. Mark Zalaznik’s performance was outstanding. Since we got off to a slow start, Mark played an hour longer keeping the crowd around and entertained.

The Epworth Fire Department would like to thank the Dubuque Racing Association, Q Casino, and the Diamond Jo Casino for the 2018 DRA grant received by the Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen. We were awarded $3,000 to pay for devices that allow us to lift patients safely. The device fits around the torso of a patient and provides straps, so multiple responders can lift the patient. The “Binder Lift” is designed to increase patient safety, as well as decrease possible injury to our EMS personnel. Thank you DRA!

Congratulations to Ben Wolf and Kyle Gansen for recently completing the Emergency Medical Technician class and becoming nationally certified. Kyla Horsfield has completed the Paramedic course at NICC, and will be taking her certification test soon. We are also very excited that one of our firefighter/EMTs, Ian Rupe, is currently enrolled in the 18-19 Paramedic Program. Welcome to new members Austin Schmit, Josh Rankin, Joe Lawler, Kelly Langel, and Andrew New.

Lieutenant Dave Theisen retired in May after volunteering as an EMT and firefighter for 30 years. Dave served multiple years on the Board of Directors and held every office in the non-profit corporation. If you see K-Mart out and about, be sure to thank him for his service to the Epworth community.

We have some very exciting news to confirm what is traveling through the community. We have an opportunity to obtain the first fire truck ever owned by the EFD. It was purchased at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago and served Epworth for many years in the formative stages of the department. It has been owned by the Maquoketa Fire Department and is used for parades and other events. We have established a committee to look into bringing “Herman” home. We are grateful to our friends at the Maquoketa Fire Department for allowing us the chance to purchase the truck, which has significant historical value for us.

We hope you and your family take advantage of the remaining summer months and have a safe, happy, and healthy fall and winter!

Recently, I took my 4-year-old child to her annual physical. After checking her vitals, the doctor asked my daughter to stand on one foot. The doctor wanted to see how long my daughter could keep her balance. Keeping one’s balance is a milestone in human development. Yet, there are times when we lose our balance. We have different areas of our lives that are weighing heavily on us, making us metaphorically wobbly.

I believe that a life in connection with God helps us keep our balance. Over the next couple of months, our congregation will be hearing about how our life with God, when we live into it fully, is a life of balance. We are called to work hard and to rest. We are called to have relationships and to work on personal growth. When we remain connected to God, we are more likely keep the different dimensions of our life in balance.

Jesus said, “I am the Vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything.” John 15: 5

If you are feeling like your life is out of balance, consider doing what you can to strengthen your connection to God. We cannot stand alone. We need God and we need each other. Those connections help us to regain our balance. If you’re looking for a community to do that work with, visit us at Epworth UMC. We’re working on it, too!
