On Saturday, Nov. 5, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett took a group of stu-dents to audition for the band assembled by the district of sur-rounding schools.

Students from all over the area tried out and competed, and sev-eral OHS students made the band as well. Overall, Olney High School had more people take first chair than any other chair in the instrument sections.

Those who made the district band were: Jenny Ford, bass clar-inet, first chair; Melanie Allen, percussion, eighth chair; Tris-ten Belyeu, trumpet, first alter-

nate; Olivia Brandt, contrabass clarinet, first chair; Erik Cuba, euphonium, second chair; Ari-anna Esparza, flute, first chair; Michael Liming, trombone, first chair; Amber McCutcheon, clari-net, 16th chair; Jesus Mendoza, oboe, first chair; Brynna Ogle, bassoon, first chair; Hayley On-dricek, trumpet, second altenate; and Baylee Young, piccolo, sec-ond chair.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, another group of students will audition for the region band, which cov-ers more schools than the district band, meaning there will be more competition for students who will be trying out. Wish them luck!

On Monday, Nov. 14, the board of trustees of Olney ISD met for its routinely scheduled board meeting at 6 p.m. in the Olney ISD Admin-istration Office. They talked about different subjects, including the progress on the CTE building.

“The CTE building will soon have the remaining concrete poured for walks and drives,” Dr. Roach, su-perintendent, said. “The overhead doors should be here within the

next week. Interior work contin-ues with ceilings and exterior glass to soon be in. We are pretty well on schedule and hope to be in the building sometime mid-January.”

Another matter they discussed was the process of designation of Olney ISD as a District of Innova-tion.

A district may apply to be a Dis-trict of Innovation if its last TEA rating was “Acceptable.” The des-ignation, according to the TEA website, would allow Olney ISD to

be “exempt from certain sections of the Texas Education Code that inhibit the goals of the district as outlined in the locally adopted In-novation Plan.”

“The district of innovation desig-nation has several areas of possible consideration. For our district the most practical would be a flexible school start date. As the law stands now we cannot begin school before the fourth Monday of August. One item we will not consider is class-size ratio,” Dr. Roach explained.

The Olney Junior High boys bas-ketball teams played at Quanah Monday, Nov. 14, to start their season. They also played Monday, Nov. 21, at home versus Seymour.

The Olney Junior High B Team, which is comprised of seventh and eighth graders, led off the night with a win versus Quanah by the score of 18-11. They were led in scoring by Brian Hernandez. Of-fensive standouts were Hernan-dez (10 points) Jose Olvera (four points), Jet Toney (two points) and Haydon Carter (two points). De-fensive standouts were Will Bern-hardt and Carter.

The seventh grade team fell to Quanah by the score of 25-33. They were led in scoring by Bobby Smith with 12 points. Offensive standouts were Smith and Cauy Burrows. Defensive standouts were Jonathan Melchor and Clay Fite. Final scoring was Burrows

(three points), Melchor, Luis Mar-quez, Codey Henderson, Christo-pher Robertson and Clay Fite all with two points apiece.

During their games versus Sey-mour, the Olney Junior High B Team led off the night with a hard fought, 12-12 tie versus Seymour. The kids did a great job of hustling and created a lot of steals. We just couldn’t put the ball in hoop enough. A lot of missed shots and timely made shots by Seymour led to the tie. We definitely had our opportunities to win this game but that’s how the game of basketball goes.

A ton of improvement was made by this group and I hope they con-tinue to evolve. If we can, the re-sults will take care of itself.

They were led in scoring by Will Bernhardt, who was the offensive standout with four points. Defen-sive standouts were Brian Her-nandez and Tate Twilligear. Final scoring included Bernhardt with

four and Hernandez, Twilligear, Carter and Jeb Carpenter with two points apiece.

The seventh grade team defeated Seymour by the score of 33-8. This was a better team effort all around by the kids tonight. They started off a little slow and came out and defensively took over the game by shutting out Seymour in the sec-ond and third. Our defense led to a lot of fast break points and that was the difference in the ballgame. We do need to work on running all the way through our offense to get better shots. I was very impressed with our passing and effort.

They were led in scoring by Smith, who was an offensive standout, along with Fite. Defen-sive standouts were Oswaldo Her-nandez and Melchor. Final scor-ing was Smith with 11, Fite with eight, Melchor with six, Hender-son with four, and Burrows and Brayden Castro with two points apiece.
