KREWE?
Celebrate with us!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels January 20202
Here is hoping your new year is off to a fantastic start. Like you, we all survived the busy and hectic holiday time of year, and thanks to you, it was extra special for our homebound, elderly clients.Lubbock Meals on Wheels provides many “extra” items to our recipients such as magazines, books, flowers, birthday cakes, and pet food, just to name a few. This is why we always say our service is “more than a meal.” The daily hot meal is the basis of our program and is obviously very important to our clients’ health, but for many of our homebound clients all the extra items we send also help make their lives easier, their lonely days brighter, keep their furry friends healthy, and allow them to stay independent and in their own homes where they want to be.
Thanks to generous donations from the community, we are able to provide all of these additional treats and that is never more evident than around the holidays. Every day various supporters came by our office bringing any number of items for us to share with our clients. Of course we thanked them in person, and many wanted to remain anonymous or refused any formal thanks, but we want them all to know how important their donations are to our clients! We received many calls from our recipients so excited about their new warm blanket, beautiful new robe, or fuzzy stuffed toy. From food boxes to poinsettias to plush animals to Christmas gifts, our clients enjoyed them all. For most of our recipients, these are the only gifts they
will receive during the holidays making them all the more special. Thank you to everyone in the community who makes all of this possible, not only at the holidays, but all year long. To all of you who purchased gifts from the Santa to a Senior angel trees, donated funds for poinsettias, brought food or other donations, sorted and wrapped gifts, delivered food boxes and Christmas gifts, and helped with all of these things in so many other ways, not only do we all thank you, but know that our clients thank you, and that you made a tremendous difference in so many lives. We are always amazed by, and grateful for, your support to make our program so much more than a meal.

Welcome to 2020!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels provides

and pet food just to name a few.
LISA GILLILAND
In October of last year, HEB reached out to us to learn more about our mission and find out how they can support us. Following that meeting, HEB paid for three days of meal delivery. They covered the cost of our Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. HEB also paid for another day of meals in December and helped deliver that meal. Approximately 20 HEB partners rode with LMOW volunteers that day. Our volunteers and clients loved the experience. In addition to all of this, HEB has agreed to be one of the headline sponsors at our 21st Annual Mardi Gras event.
WE ARE EXCITED TO HAVE A NEW PARTNER IN HEB!
The Lubbock Lions Club awarded Lubbock Meals on Wheels a $5,000 grant.
This grant allows us to provide Emergency Meals to all of our clients year-round. There is enough
shelf-stable food for two meals in each box.
These meals are to be used in the event that we are unable to deliver due to weather or another disaster. Many thanks to Lubbock Lions Club!

Welcome to Lubbock, HEB!
ROUTE EXPANTION & NEW CONSTRUCTIONIf you have recently driven by our building, you may have noticed some new construction! We are building a parking lot to the east of our office.
In January, we added a 63rd route to enable us to continue to grow with our Lubbock and Wolfforth communities. With our 16-staff, office and kitchen volunteers, and all of the delivery volunteers, we have more than 80 people parking at our facility each weekday. The new parking lot to our east will provide 30 additional spots. Most of the staff will be able to park on the east side of the building, leaving parking in the front and to our west for volunteers and other visitors.
A grant from The CH Foundation helped us to add a door and hallway to the east side of our building, allowing quick access to and from the new parking lot. Another generous grant from an anonymous donor paid for part of the construction of the lot itself. We hope this will be the last construction we have for a while!

Lubbock Meals on Wheels January 20204
Mardi Gras is the love of life.
It is the harmonic convergence of our food, our music, our creativity, our eccentricity, our neighborhoods, and our joy of living.
All at once.
- CHRIS ROSE
The Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ 21st Annual Mardi Gras will include over 35 food booths (with selections from your favorite local restaurants), music by Bo Garza, a large silent auction, and cash bars. All of this will take place at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Exhibit Hall from 5:30pm-9:00pm. In addition to music and fabulous food, there will be children’s activities, a benefit drawing, and traditional Mardi Gras beads. Character Selfies Photo Booth will be set up – for $5, you can get a fun photo with the background of your choice commemorating your Mardi Gras celebration. You’ll see lots of purple (for justice), green (for faith), and gold (for power) – all traditional Mardi Gras colors. Kiddos will enjoy the Children’s Area featuring bouncers, face and hair painting, and many other activities. There is no additional charge for activities in the children’s area.
Carnival Season begins on the day of the Epiphany, January 6th. Fat Tuesday (or Mardi Gras) is the final celebration on the last night of the Carnival Season, a time to eat, drink, and be merry before beginning the ritual fasting during the Lenten Season. Our King and Queen, Nick Kraynok and Sasha Wilson, will reign over the event in true regal fashion.
Tickets are $45 for adults, ($50 at the door), $10 for children 17 and under. A handy tray, to carry all of your food and drinks, is included
in ticket price. You can purchase your tickets online at lubbockmealsonwheels.org or at Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ office. We accept cash, check, or credit cards (no American Express please). Give us a call and we will be happy to mail your tickets to you or have them ready for you at the door. Event tickets may also be purchased at any Select-A-Seat location (service charge applies) and at the door for an additional $5.00.
Benefit Drawing Tickets featuring a $1,000 Southwest Airlines gift card and a $1,000 Amazon gift card are available now. At just $10/ticket, purchase several! Two drawings will be held, and only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Get all of your tickets today and get ready for some #SeriousFun on February 25th!
We offer several levels of sponsorship for businesses and offer some excellent benefits such as complimentary tickets, reserved tables, and advertising. For more information, go to lubbockmealsonwheels.org or call Lubbock Meals on Wheels at (806)792-7971.
We hope you join us for a fun evening of great food
and fantastic entertainment at Mardi Gras, 2020. Gather your KREWE and get your tickets early. All proceeds
stay local and benefit Lubbock Meals on Wheels!

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED W/ LMOW?
In June, we moved from Arizona after my youngest child graduated high school. The LMOW newsletter showed up in my mail, and I completed the volunteer form. I began volunteering in September, and the rest is history.
DO YOU HAVE ANY KIDS AND/OR PETS?
One son & daughter-in-law, two college aged daughters, one dog, and three cats.
SHERRI SPILLER (52)Lubbock MOWKitchen Assistant
YOU ARE A NEW ADDITION TO A CRAYON BOX. WHAT COLOR ARE YOU AND WHY?
Supersonic Red! My favorite color, and I do like to drive a little fast in my car.
WHY IS A TENNIS BALL FUZZY?
To make it easier on a dog’s mouth when playing fetch. I have a feeling if you asked a tennis player that would not be their answer.
WHAT WOULD I FIND IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR RIGHT NOW?
Fresh produce, eggs, heavy cream, and almond milk.
WHAT IS YOUR MIDDLE NAME?
René
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE DISH THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY WON’T EAT?
Overcooked pasta and bananas
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A NONPROFIT PROFESSIONAL?
It’s fulfilling work. I enjoy being around the kind volunteers and staff.
YOU ARE A NEW ADDITION TO A CRAYON BOX. WHAT COLOR ARE YOU AND WHY?
Black, because I’m mysterious
WHY IS A TENNIS BALL FUZZY?
So it’s soft on a dog’s gums.
WHAT WOULD I FIND IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR RIGHT NOW?
Beer
WHAT IS YOUR MIDDLE NAME?
Andrew
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE DISH THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY WON’T EAT?
Anything that contains sour cream
WHAT CAN YOU SIMPLY NOT RESIST?
Giving my children what they want and homemade desserts.
WHO DO YOU FIND INSPIRATIONAL?
My husband! (he did not pay for that answer.) He has been an educator for 32-years. I get to see what students don’t normally. So many ex-students have gotten in touch with him to tell him how he has made a difference in their lives.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A NONPROFIT PROFESSIONAL?
Non-profits are there to help people in times of need. Throughout my married life and MANY moves, I have volunteered with various organizations. Especially in small communities, they can be the lifeblood of the town.

Helping Humans and Their Pets Stay Together!
Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Pet Program is currently helping recipients care for 250 dogs and 105 cats.
We are now delivering over 2,300 pounds of kibble each month. Thanks to your generous donations specifically to this special program, we are able to provide pet food, vaccinations, and minor veterinary care to 15% more pets than in January, 2019.
• 94% of pet owners say their animal pal makes them smile more than once a day.
• The word “pet” comes from the Middle English word “petty,” meaning “small.”
• Pets have been kept by humans since prehistoric times, and almost every single culture around the world has a history of pets.
“You cannot share your life with a dog…or a cat, and not know perfectly well that animals have personalities and minds and feelings.”

senior 2019
Many groups, organizations, clubs, businesses, schools, and individuals made generous donations throughout the holiday season, and we are truly grateful for their support. Space limitations prevent a complete listing of all the names, but that does not mean our appreciation is any less. To all who were kind enough to bring money, food, service, and other donations or supported us through the purchase of pecans, quiche, Christmas tributes, or engraved bricks and plates - please know that your gifts made a significant difference in the lives of the homebound, elderly, and disabled right here in our community.
On behalf of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Board of Directors, staff, and recipients, thank you for your commitment and support.
“Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your
appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly
appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others
around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have
more of it.” —Ralph Marston

Feed a Friend… It’s as Easy as Pie!The 28th annual “Feed a Friend-It’s as Easy as Pie” fundraiser wrapped up on November 24, 2019. Thanks to our sponsors and the Lubbock community, we raised $88,621. For another year in a row, this is record breaking. This covers the cost of over 17,700 meals, all helping people remain at home, well fed, and independent. Many thanks to United Supermarkets, KLBK, KAMC,
and Mrs. Smith’s for hosting our fundraiser and donating pies. Congratulations to Noel Garcia – store director for Market Street at 19th & Quaker, the winner of the 28th annual pie eating contest. We appreciate all of our pie eating participants: Lauren Matter, Ron Roberts, and Avery Travis (KAMC); Nick Kraynok (KLBK); Todd Buchanan and Chris Edwards (United); Chad Hasty (KFYO);
Kenny Maines (Entertainer); and Mudflap (KLLL). Floyd Price kept the rowdy group in line! A big shout out to Allen Smith & staff at Market Street at 98th & Quaker for having the largest increase in donations from 2018. We appreciate the media, our volunteers, store checkers, and donors who generously support this event. Many thanks to Genia Davis, our ‘pie angel’.
“Pie throwing is kind of a lost art, and although it may be a rather rudimentary, burlesque humor, there’s something inherently funny about taking a pie in the face, under the right conditions.” —Johnny Carson
