(continued from previous page) Mr. Ricardo Gutierrez’s guitar performance initiated the joyous mood of the anniversary party. Drumers of

the Center’s Naruwan Taiko Group did their powerful but rhythmic drum beatings greatly heightened the youthful spirit in us, young and old. Senior Choir sang increasingly popular Taiwanese songs such as “Love in Formosa” and “Oceanic Country”. Ms Li Wen-Hui won much laughter with her magic show. Presbyterian Church Vocal Quartet sang “The Traveler” portraying the feelings of the Taiwanese and their longing for home. They also sang “We are Masters of Taiwan” calling for the Taiwanese to wake up so they can strive to claim Taiwan Sovereignty for them-selves for ever and ever.

The finale was “The Song of Music”, written, directed and acted by Fan Sao-Tah and Hung Juei-Jen. It is a musical dance comedy. Other performers were Ou Chun-Mei, Chien Charng-Ming, Lin Yi-Jen, Chang Hui-Lan, Huang Tsung-Chuan, Wu Sheng-Chih, Ho Chin-Hua, Liao Kun-Fang, Li Wen-Hui, Tsung Chun-Lung, Chang Shu-O. Chen Ling-Li was the story-line reader. Dance Choreographers were Chang Hsiu-Chiong and Hung Juei-Jen. The performance brought the audience not only the well-loved music but also laughters. The performance proves to us that our Center is full of talents. The evening party ended successfully. Thanks to all for coming to the Center’s anniversary celebration.

Special Performance by Jen Shyu & her band

Born in Illinois from Taiwanese and East Timorese parents, Jen Shyu is a vocalist, composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer who, as a soloist and bandleader now based in NYC, has established herself as a pioneering and original voice in the improvisation-al, avant-garde, and creative music worlds. Her perfor-mance will include original music from her latest album Jade Tongue, including Taiwanese folk songs arranged for her band and for solo vocal/piano, singing in Tai-wanese, Portuguese, Mandarin, and English. Shyu will also play the 2-stringed Taiwanese moon guitar, sing-ing songs which she learned from elders in southern Taiwan who still preserve this disappearing Taiwanese folk tradition.

Shyu also records and tours nationally and internation-ally with saxophonist/composer Steve Coleman and Five Elements since appearing on his latest albums Lucidarium and Weaving Symbolics (Label Bleu). Her work is also influenced by collaborations with Asian Improv aRts art-ists during her 3 years in the Bay Area after graduating from Stanford University and playing with a wide range of dancers, performing artists, and musicians on the bur-geoning improvisational scene in NYC and Europe. Shyu is also deeply informed by folk and aboriginal music of Taiwan, research in Cuba and Brazil, and a lifetime of classical training in piano, violin, ballet, and opera. She has been awarded fellowships from the Asian Cultural Council, Jerome Foundation/Roulette Space, MacDowell Colony, and the Bronx Council on the Arts.

Graduation Recital

Christine began playing the piano at age 5, and has been playing ever since. Christine is currently finishing up her last quarter at UC San Diego. She is majoring in music, with an emphasis on piano performance, and has been studying under Professor Cecil Lytle. She also started playing the flute on her own in the 5th grade, joining the school bands. It wasn’t until Christine came to UCSD that she started taking flute lessons from a private teacher. For the past two years, she has been the piano accompanist for her flute teacher’s students whenever they have flute re-citals and tests. Apart from her studies, Christine has been a piano teacher for the past three years at the La Jolla Piano Institute. Her students range in age from 3 to adults. Time: 4/19/09 (Sun) 2 PM4/19/09 (Sun) 2 PM(Sun) 2 PM2 PM PMTitle: World Power Politics and TaiwanAuthor: Wang Ching-Hong Speaker: Shin Ta Liu

Born in 1941, in Yunlin, Wang earned his BA in journalism at University of Missouri and MA at University of Maryland. After a long career, including a long stretch of assignment in the US, as a reporter and editor of various Chinese lan-guage print media, he is currently a freelance writer specializing in US foreign policy toward East Asia.

Taiwan’s sovereignty issue is controversial not only in the in-ternational community, but also in Taiwan. Essentially, the arguments arise from the different weight one gives to “Cairo Declaration” and “San Francisco Peace Treaty (here-after SFPT)”. However, in spite of the fact that the issue involves the future Taiwan and its people, there was no systematic and careful research on the two documents and the historical background of their development. Wishing to fill the gap, the author spent years gathering relevant materials to write the book.

According to the author, the Cairo Declaration is merely a war-time news release describing the inten-tion of the participants to deal with territorial matter after the end of the war with Japan while the SFPT is a legitimate treaty that over 50 coun-tries signed. According to SFPT, Japan renounced its sovereignty over Taiwan, but did not specify where or to whom the renounced sovereignty should belong. It surely does not belong to China, be it the Republic of China or the People’s Republic of China. The people of Taiwan conse-quently should and could confidently claim that they alone are its rightful owner.

Time: 5/31/09 (Sun) 2 PM2 PM PMTitle: A Colonel’s SonSub-title: Foreign Provincials, Where are you going?Author: Mr. Yang, Yu-TingSpeaker: Jau-Fang Wu

The author’s parents came to Taiwan in the late 1940’s follow-ing the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek’s KMT in the Chinese Civil War. Born in 1953, like many children of Chiang’s supporters, the author grew

in one of many so-called “villages of government employees and their dependents” in 1953. He earned an MS degree in Computer Science from University of Massachusetts. After returning to Taiwan, he worked as the deputy director of the Depart-ment of Technology and Research and then owned a start-up software company. In 2005 when he was in his early 50’s, he entered Chinese Cultural University specializing in history of KMT-CCP relations and history of Taiwan.

The book is a collection of es-says through them the author tells his stories. The stories are quite interesting and thought provoking. Even though the author offers pri-marily a “mainlander’s” perspective, he tries to break away from typical mentality and emotional shackles of a mainlander. This book therefore provides a space for the mainlanders to reflect on their current situation and to seek a path to their future. For the Taiwanese, the book may help them to learn the tortured mind of a second-generation mainlander who had grown up in the exclusive “dependants’ village”.
