This gap translated into a desire to help the needy in concrete, tangible ways. It also coincided with the Reverend Dean Robinson’s vision for creating CCSC. So, in 1978, Emily was enlisted as “Volunteer #2”. In the beginning, she did almost anything, multi-tasking as the needs of the ministry expanded. The early years were busy with many people moving to Houston due to our robust economy, and then being laid off during the oil bust. (Does this sound familiar?) Eventually, Emily settled into interviewing clients coming to the food pantry and has been volunteering there weekly, except for the five years she cared for her husband. Emily’s job entails listening to people’s stories (crises) and determining how CCSC can best help. People arrive burdened and embarrassed to ask for help, and she is able to lighten their load and meet their pressing needs. A conservative estimate of Emily’s impact would be that she’s helped over 20,000 families during her years of service. It’s a complex job that she excels in, and it has clearly nourished her Christian walk. Ten years ago, CCSC published a book of stories written by clients, staff and volunteers. Emily submitted a story that began with these lines: “In the spring of 1978 I was given a great opportunity. I was asked to do something for someone besides my family and myself.” Emily turns 90 this year. It’s a time of reflection and gratitude, and she told me that CCSC has been an important part of her life. Her longevity and commitment are worthy of recognition, but of equal import is her optimism for CCSC’s future. She sees bright days ahead and wants the ministry to grow and evolve, while staying true to its mission in serving “The Least, the Last & the Lost”, which is the title of the story Emily submitted. Where were you in 1978?In 1978, Emily Griffin

was an empty nester,

active in her church

(St. Luke’s Methodist),

yet sensing a gap in

her spiritual life that

needed filling. This gap

translated into a desire

to help the needy in

concrete, tangible

ways. It also coincided

with the Reverend

Dean Robinson’s

vision for creating

CCSC. So, in 1978,

Emily was enlisted as

“Volunteer #2”.

In the beginning, she did almost anything, multi-tasking as

the needs of the ministry expanded. The early years were

busy with many people moving to Houston due to our

robust economy, and then being laid off during the oil bust.

(Does this sound familiar?) Eventually, Emily settled into

interviewing clients coming to the food pantry and has been

volunteering there weekly, except for the five years she cared

for her husband.

Emily’s job entails listening to people’s stories (crises) and

determining how CCSC can best help. People arrive burdened

and embarrassed to ask for help, and she is able to lighten their

load and meet their pressing needs. A conservative estimate of

Emily’s impact would be that she’s helped over 20,000 families

during her years of service. It’s a complex job that she excels in,

and it has clearly nourished her Christian walk.

Ten years ago, CCSC published a book of stories written by

clients, staff and volunteers. Emily submitted a story that

began with these lines: “In the spring of 1978 I was given a great

opportunity. I was asked to do something for someone besides my

family and myself.”

Emily turns 90 this year. It’s a time of reflection and gratitude,

and she told me that CCSC has been an important part of

her life.

Her longevity and commitment are worthy of recognition, but

of equal import is her optimism for CCSC’s future. She sees

bright days ahead and wants the ministry to grow and evolve,

while staying true to its mission in serving “The Least, the Last

& the Lost”, which is the title of the story Emily submitted.

Michelle Shonbeck,

Executive Director

Emily at her volunteer post in 1993.

The Christian Community Service Center has a tradition in conjunction with All Saints Day in which we honor those volunteers in our community who have passed away over the previous year. It was our privilege to serve alongside

these caring, hard-working, faithful individuals. They made a discernable difference in our community.

This year we remember the following CCSC Saints:

Michelle Shonbeck

Dear CCSC Friend,

“We live in a world that can sometimes be mean-spirited. This is

why CCSC’s work matters.”

Rudy Duarte, a former board member who has been active

in our youth-serving programs, shared this thought with me

several years ago. We were having a general discussion about

the woes of the world, and the helplessness we sometimes feel.

Rudy’s point is that while we may not be able to remove harsh-

ness from our world, we can counter it by our own actions.

Instead of complaining about the loss of basic civility, we can

be gracious. Instead of letting daunting statistics freeze us, we

can donate food, share our time, and work for causes that will

live beyond us.

My great-grandmother planted a tree at age 99. She must have

known she wouldn’t live to see the tree at full height, yet she

still planted it. This is a good life lesson: invest in things (even

small things) that will add value into the world and outlive you.

There are lots of people like Rudy who share their time, skills,

and resources with CCSC. Thank you for that support – we

are indeed committed to our mission statement and counter-

ing the harshness of the world by living our Christ-centered

mission.

In Christ,

volunteer Spotlight: national charity leagueIt Takes a Team - Many groups support the Christian Community Service Center. The National Charity League (NCL) is one of

those great organizations. Chapters from all over the city volunteer with us, including Heart of Texas, Post Oak and Bayou Villages.

Mothers and daughters work together completing philanthropic projects throughout the community. They can often be found

lending a hand at the Sunshine Resale Shop or assisting clients at Back To School and Jingle Bell Express. “My daughters and I

enjoy volunteering with CCSC during their Back to School drive because it allows us to have a hands-on experience serving people

in need. It reminds us that there are many ways in which we can effect positive change in our community, and that we have much

in our own lives for which to be grateful,” one mother shares. CCSC appreciates these women and their daughters for their hard

work and support as we serve our community together.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS

4 www.ccschouston.org

There are a variety of ways to volunteer with us. We are cur-

rently seeking volunteers to serve as committee members

to help carry out special events. Committees include Jingle

Bell Express, Back To School and fundraising events (Azalea

Dinner and Grow, Gather & Give!). These event committees

are hosted by great teams of volunteers who assist with plan-

ning and execution. For more information on these and other

volunteer opportunities, contact Kate Gallup at 713-961-3993

or [email protected].

While Houston is blessed with a moderate climate year-round,

many Emergency Services-Central clients are preparing for the

few cold months that are upon us. As you might imagine, fam-

ilies experiencing crises often go without appropriate winter

outerwear. Every year, our Clothing Closet runs low on these

items due to high demand. Jackets and coats for children (all

sizes), adult men, and plus-size women are especially needed.

Please consider passing along your gently-used items.

Donations may be dropped off at 3434 Branard (77027), week-

days between 9:00AM and 2:30PM or Saturdays from 9:00AM

to Noon. Thank you for thinking of our neighbors in need as

the weather changes!

EMERGENCY SERVICES–CENTRAL

In early September, a middle-aged gentleman visited Emergency

Services-Southwest with his head hung low. In his interview, we

learned he had recently lost his construction job and was unable

to pay his bills. In that moment, we provided him three things:

a 5-day food package, compassionate encouragement, and a

referral for counseling/career guidance. A few days later he

returned to visit us. To our surprise, the agency we encouraged

him to visit ended up offering him a job - on the spot! He came

back to tell us “thank you,” and added “You never know what

God has in store for you. I am so happy I came here for help.”

To augment client services, JobNet has added a new staff

position: a Client Services Coordinator. Carmen Clarke was

recently hired to fill the position, and her role will be to work

with clients individually to set goals for long-term stability.

JOBNETThis service expansion will enable JobNet to offer more work-

shops and grow relationships with other community organi-

zations. CCSC is excited to offer another layer of support that

will further propel clients toward self-sufficiency.

During the previous service year, (August 2014 - July 2015), Martha’s Way changed the lives of 282 promising entrepre-neurs through classroom-based business education, hands-on technical training, and job leads. Courses were available at three locations around Houston: Memorial Assistance Ministries, Mission Milby in Houston’s East End, and Sharpstown Baptist Church. CCSC was delighted to award

MARTHA’S WAY199 program graduates with certificates of completion. For many of our students, this was the first time they experienced a graduation ceremony. By completing the rigorous training, Martha’s Way graduates are empowered to begin their own housekeeping business. For information on hiring a certified Martha’s Way graduate, email Ana Tappan at [email protected].

This week’s events are held at Bellaire United Methodist Church, 4417 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire, TX 77401.For additional information contact Laurie Fitzpatrick at 713-961-3993 or [email protected]
