The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of waste every

As much as 50% of

waste in the average

dustbin could be

composted

Every day 80 million food and drinks cans

end up in landfill (being buried) - that's one and a half cans per person.

More than 30 million inkjet cartridges are dumped

each year in the UK alone, equivalent weight

of 18 blue whales

Page 13: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

Each year UK households throw away the equivalent of 3 ½ million double

Every disposable nappy that

has ever been thrown away, still exists in landfill sites.

Page 15: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

The average useful life of plastic carrier bags is

12 mins yet they take between

500 to 1000 years

to break down in landfill sites

Can we do better?

• We throw out an average of 25 full black bags of rubbish EVERY DAY in our school. Most of this could be reused or recycled….. Can we reduce this ? YES

YES

Litter

throw your litter on the ground.

Use the correct bin.

Don’t

Page 20: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

Don’t be lazy

Page 21: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

We’re still being lazy

These are…. DRAINS NOT BINS

Page 22: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

Green for general waste, blue for recycled. We should have more blue bins than green…..we can do better – together!

Switch off lights if they are not needed

Page 24: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

What can we do?

•Turn off lights and computers when not in use

•Reduce our waste

•Recycle as much as we can

•Reuse things like plastic bags & paper

•Use the correct bins for our rubbish

Page 25: A really rubbish lesson St Mary’s High School Eco Committee Present.

• Close our windows to retain heat• Keep the curtains open so the sun will warm the

room• Nominate someone to be responsible for

monitoring energy use in each department or have a rota system

• Use email where possible – cut down on paper use

• If the classroom is too warm, turn off the radiator!

• Set computers to go into sleep mode• Most importantly – its everyone job! We need to

work together as a school community – LET’S DO IT TOGETHER!
