Although I have tried to be as accurate as possible, with worn engravings it can be very difficult to read at times and very easy to make mistakes – especially with numbers like 0 and 9; 8 and 3; 3 and 5; If you are using this information for research please consider the possibility that the dates shown here may be wrong. I would be grateful to know of any corrections you find. HTM.

Minister of the Gospel, Geologist, Historian and Political reformer
David Ure was licensed by the Presbytery of Glasgow on the conclusion of his divinity studies in
June 1783 and was preferred to the parish church of East Kilbride where he was to be
assistant minister to the Rev David Connell until 1790. After the death of David Connell, Ure
was passed over for the vacancy and became involved in research activities for Sir John
Sinclair who was promoting the First Statistical Account of Scotland.
In December 1795 David Ure was presented by the Earl of Buchan to St Nicholas Church,
Uphall and ordained as minister in July 1796. The Earl of Buchan was the principal heritor of,
what is now, Strathbrock Parish Church and Ure ministered there until his death on 28 March
1798. During his twenty months as incumbent Ure continued his natural history and antiquarian
research. Outside the south door is a weather beaten slab bearing a Latin inscription.
In translation it reads:
D. URE
Minister of religion in this church, after protracted suffering
From severe dropsy, finally expired and gave his soul back to God
On the 28th day of March, AD 1798, and was buried here.
This monument
David Steuart, Earl of Buchan,
In witness of his friendship, caused to be erected,
We are dust and shadow.
David Ure died on 28th March 1798 with a considerable reputation as a geologist and local
historian. His achievements in the disciplines of geology and botany have established Ure as
one of thee more influential figures of his time. His “ History of Rutherglen and East Kilbride”
published in 1793, is the bedrock of his skills as an observer and recorder of fossils and plants
which underlined his breadth of mind and his accuracy of vision.
His gifts as a researcher proved invaluable to Sir John Sinclair who was promoting the First
Statistical Account of Scotland between 1790 and 1799. Ure completed the sections on East
Kilbride, Killearn and Rutherglen for the Account and supervised several agricultural surveys
for Sir John.
His early training as a weaver gave him a radical outlook and his interest in political change was
enhanced through his friendship with a small coterie of political reformers, including Professor
John Anderson and David Dale.
The bicentenary of David Ure was celebrated at Claremont School Theatre, East Kilbride with
a conference on 28 March, 1998, dedicated to his life and achievements.
