GLOSSARY Establishment
A company may consist of multiple establishments, which could be dispersed geographically (e.g. in different states) with different industry classifications (e.g. Management of Companies and Manufacturing). Typically, an establishment (or payrolled business location) reflects a physical location that engages in economic activity.
QCEW
The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) covers almost 98% of jobs in the U.S. and includes employment and wages as reported by employers.
Non-QCEW
Non-QCEW data include military occupations, railroads jobs, nonprofit and religious workers, specific salespersons, and various government workers.
Self-Employed
The Census survey considers individuals as self-employed if that profession generates a significant amount of income or requires a substantial working period.
Average earnings (all industries)
Average earnings include wages, salaries, supplements (employee benefits), and proprietor income. To derive average earnings (all industries), total regional industry earnings is divided by total regional industry jobs.

Labor force participation rate
The labor force participation rate measures the share of the labor force as a percentage of the civilian non-institutional population 16 years of age and older. The labor force consists of employed individuals and unemployed persons who are available for work and are actively looking for a job (U3 unemployment). The non-institutional population does not include inmates and active duty military in the Armed Forces.
Unemployment rate
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) distinguishes among six different measures of unemployment (U1-U6). The most commonly used measure is U3 as reported monthly by the BLS. The U3 unemployment rate includes persons who are available for work and are actively looking for employment during a 4-week period prior to the survey. Individuals in that category are considered to be in the labor force. In addition to the U3 unemployment classification, the U6 unemployment rate includes discouraged workers (currently not looking for a job because of economic effects on labor markets), marginally attached workers (currently not looking for a job for other reasons), and part time workers who, for economic reason, are not able to work full time. In December 2016, the seasonally adjusted U3 unemployment rate was 4.8% as opposed to the U6 rate of 9.4%.
Gross regional product
Gross regional product measures total industry earnings (wages, salaries, supplements, and proprietor income), property income (dividends, interest, rent, corporate profits, and capital depreciation), and taxes on production (use taxes, sales taxes, etc.). Equivalent to gross domestic product, GRP reflects the market value of all goods and services produced in a region.
Median household income
The median household income is defined by the income (past 12 months) of the householder and all other household members 15 years and older. Household members do not need to be related to the householder. Unlike an average measure of income, the median household income illustrates that half of all households in an area generate more income and half of all households generate less income. The U.S. Census Bureau collects the data via the ACS over a 12 months period from a sample of over 3.5 million housing units.

Poverty rate
The U.S. Census Bureau measures the official poverty threshold by multiplying the cost of a minimum food diet in 1963 by three and adjusting the price for inflation in order to obtain today’s value. The poverty threshold varies depending on family size but does not account for geography. For example, in 2015, the poverty level for a family of three with two adults and one child under 18 years was $19,078 regardless of place of residence.
