Adopt a Ship Program Launched in the Philippines Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc. (PTC) and PTC-CSJ Foundation, in cooperation with InterManager, introduced and launched the Adopt a Ship Program in the Philippines last February 2017. The Adopt a Ship Program was initiated by the Cyprus Shipping Chamber in 2006. It aims to raise awareness among young students of the shipping industry, life on board, cargo carried by ships, trading patterns and geography. “With the Philippines as among the five largest supply countries for all seafarers (officers and ratings), I am very happy that students in the Philippines can now learn about shipping, including geography, at a very young age through Adopt a Ship Program”, said George Hoyt, InterManager Vice President and IMO Maritime Ambassador. The Program assigns a vessel to be adopted by a class of elementary students. The Ship’s officer and the teacher of the class communicate by email once a week; the teacher then shares and discusses the information exchanges with his/her class. The pilot implementation of Adopt a Ship in the Philippines is ongoing with six ships – four Seaspan and two Grindrod – that have been adopted by 18 Grades 4-6 classes assigned to 10 teachers. The teachers have each been provided with a map to enable their classes to keep track of their Ship’s movements. In total, the 18 classes are comprised of 919 students from four public elementary schools in Muntinlupa City. All four schools and their pupils are partners and beneficiaries of PTC-CSJ Foundation’s Growing Good to Great Kids or 3G Program. PTC and PTC-CSJ Foundation are implementing Adopt a Ship in partnership with the Department of Education-Muntinlupa Schools Division Office. A Renewed Life This Easter As one community, PTC Group employees prepared their hearts and spirits for Holy Week through “A Renewed Life This Easter,” a Lenten talk delivered by Mrs. Isabelita Salinas last March 29 at the Legaspi Room of First Maritime Place. During her talk, Mrs. Salinas underscored the relevance of the four pillars of Lent (Fasting/Abstinence, Alms Giving, Prayer and Penance) to the faithful today and how these can be practiced through small acts at home and even at work during the Lenten season and beyond. She also reminded employees, even though it may be difficult at times, to always choose to do good over evil and to recognize the many circumstances in our everyday lives where we can accomplish acts of kindness.
