However, I want to use this space to talk a little more about an amazing opportunity our junior high students got to experience last month: The Fall 2019 Dirty Feet Retreat. Last month, WHLC was able to send nine students to this weekend retreat at Camp EWALU, and I am so thrilled to report what a great weekend it was for everyone. About 40 dierent students from seven churches gathered for a weekend, and together explored the topic of their faith in Jesus: "What exactly is their faith, and how do they live it out?" The idea of the Dirty Feet Retreat was for the students to get their feet “dirty” both literally and metaphorically, as they understand what it means to follow Christ in the world. Students got to worship God with fun songs, do group Bible studies, play cooperative games and activities, and share conversations around campfires and dinner. It was a packed weekend filled with faith, good laughs, and fun memories! A rainstorm unfortunately kept our students inside far longer than we would have liked during the weekend, but by no means did it diminish the spirits of the kids! It was so awesome to see the students grasp ahold of the Bible studies, activities and worship, and talk excitedly about what their faith meant to them. It was during a big outdoor game of Romans vs. Christians during the camp that this idea fully took shape. In the game the adults represent Romans, trying to capture Christians (the kids). The catch is that the kids can have conversations with the Romans, in which they can explain their faith and the Good News of Jesus. If they can convince the Romans with their conversations, they not only go free, but gain the Romans' support as fellow Christians! Now I should stress that the base of the game is having fun, but it also allowed students the chance to actually share what following Jesus means to them. It was a blessing to hear the kids speak of God's love, grace and forgiveness! Some quoted the classic stories they learned in Sunday School. Others described the church they grew up in. They didn’t neglect the idea that their faith didn’t ever come without struggles, and many spoke of God’s awesome mercy and how He never abandons. We Romans agreed that we were indeed impressed by the faith of these awesome teenagers. I wish I had the time and space here to record the other awesome adventures we experienced during that brief weekend at camp. Pranks were pulled, insane board games were played, and students had the chance to share funny and goofy talents in a hilarious variety show! Overall, the weekend was a great experience for everyone involved, and we are excited to go on more retreat opportunities again in the future! -Zach Meyer

Last month, WHLC was able to send nine students to this weekend retreat at Camp EWALU, and I am so thrilled to report what a great weekend it was for everyone. About 40 different students from seven churches gathered for a weekend, and together explored the topic of their faith in Jesus: "What exactly is their faith, and how do they live it out?"

Junior High Night: Cold Front

Calling all middle schoolers! It is time to brace the cold! All students in junior high are invited to join us on Friday, November 18, from 6-8 p.m., for another round of Junior High Night! We will have dinner, a devotional, and lots of fun activities designed around the cold weather theme! Bring a friend or two, and join us for a fun evening! If your child is interested in coming to JHN, just let Zach know! That way, we can get a headcount of how much supplies we need to get for the night!

Children, Youth & Family MinistrySpecial CHAOS on November 10!

Our CHAOS group (and any high schoolers who want to join us) will help serve at the Comfort Food Cook-Off this month to help the Family Promise Program. The cook-off is from 5-7 p.m. at West Des Moines Christian Church, so CHAOS will look a little different for that evening. We will be meeting here at WHLC around 4:45 p.m., and head to the cook-off as a group. We should arrive back at WHLC a little after 7 p.m.! We will be having dinner at the event, and it will be a great way for our group to participate in an awesome service opportunity in our community!

For our November 7 gathering, we welcome a speaker from AARP. The topic of the program will be how to recognize and avoid identity theft and fraud.

In December, we are delighted to welcome back the Bells Quartet, who will share songs of the Christmas season.

Elderberries is a group of mature, mostly retired folks who gather at noon for a potluck meal. You can bring a dish to share if you would like. All are most certainly welcome!

~Pastor Robin

Unfortunately there are still a number of email and text message scams going around that spoof an email or text message from your pastor or a church staff member. We will NEVER email or text you to ask for money! If you receive a suspicious email from one of the pastors or the church just delete it, or call us if you have any questions. Do NOT reply to the message or click on any links in it. Scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated, so don’t be embarrassed about calling to ask if a message really came from us.

November is National Adoption Month, a time to honor families who have opened their hearts and homes to children in need. For LSI, it is a time to celebrate the families we support through Foster Care and Adoption, and to raise awareness for the hundreds of Iowa children in need of a safe, loving home.

In 30 counties across western Iowa, LSI Foster Care and Adoption recruits, licenses, and supports foster and adoptive families to ensure every Iowa child grows up in a safe, stable environment.

But more work needs to be done. According to the most recent federal data, more than 100,000 children in the U.S. are waiting to be adopted from foster care, and thousands of teens age out of foster care every year without a permanent family. To learn more about supporting Iowa children in foster care, visit LSIowa.org/Foster, or contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at [email protected] or 563.676.2065.

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. The Christmas QuiltWELCA Ladies Advent Service

Monday, December 2, 2019

Please invite guests and join us at this annual event to mark the beginning of the Advent Season. The evening will begin at 5:30 for those who wish to view the beautifully decorated tables in Parish Hall. The worship play will begin in the sanctuary at 6:30 followed by a time of fellowship and dessert back in Parish Hall. Table sign-up and tickets will be available after worship services beginning the weekend of November 2/3. Tickets are $5.00 per person, complimentary for children six and under. A list of items for donation to the residents of Luther Park will be available at the sign-up table. These unwrapped items will be collected that evening in Parish Hall.

This event comes alive through the creativity of many women who transform Parish Hall into a festive place. We invite you to join in the fun and decorate a table! In conjunction with our presentation of “The Christmas Quilt,” decorators are asked to select a Christmas Symbol to use as the theme of their table. A list of symbols and their origins / meanings is available. You may use WHLC dishes, glasses, flatware, tablecloths (white, gold, blue) and/or cloth napkins (white, blue, gold, red). However, you may prefer to use some or all of your own items, including charger plates or table runners. If you are willing to be a table hostess, please contact Barb Waymire at 490-9167 or [email protected].

Over 25 women were treated to a moving program at the WELCA Fall Gathering on October 7. Our speaker, Pat Jacobs, a Board member of the Lutheran Chaplaincy Outreach, shared her faith story with the group. She challenged us to really listen to hear God talking to us in our daily lives. Pat also introduced us to Mackenzie Ryan who walked us through an exercise to help us each learn to tell our own faith stories.

At this meeting WELCA officers for 2020 were elected. Huge thanks to the following ladies who agreed to serve WELCA and WHLC in this way:

President Elaine HitesPresident-Elect Betty JohnsonPast President Barb WaymireSecretary Ann RowlandTreasurer Donna Yeager

Mission Co-chairs Jan Grannes, Marilyn Penberthy

Funeral Lunch Co-coordinators Linda Anderson, Sharman Blake

Thank you to the Naomi Circle for hosting the evening by setting up, cleaning up and providing delicious treats.

November is the time of year when Women of the ELCA share the centuries old tradition of Thankofferings. In the 1800s and before, when it seemed that there was not enough money to carry out the work of the church, women would act together as “cent” or “mite” societies. Each woman would set aside offerings at home throughout the year in thanksgiving for blessings received. Then on occasion, the women would join their offerings together to support ministry of many kinds. Today, in thousands of congregations, Thankofferings are given to support the life-changing ministries of the Women of the ELCA. Together, we do more than we could ever do apart, in gratitude for all God has given to us, and with hope for all that is to come. All WHLC women will be offered special Thankoffering envelopes at services the weekend of November 16-17. These envelopes will be collected during services the following weekend of November 23-24. You may also mail or deliver them to the church office. Your generosity is appreciated!

September, 2019 General Offering was $1,432 or 3.4% under budget. 2019 year-to-date General Offering is $4,752

or 1.3% over budget. 2019 year-to-date General Offering is $19,697 greater than 2018 year-to-date General

2019 General Fund Income is 7.2% greater than expected General Fund Income. The budget assumes 1/12 of

2019 budget.

September, 2019 General Fund Expenses were $751 under budget and year-to-date expenses are $7,338 under

budget. Most of the September, 2019 General Fund Expense under budget variance is from the timing difference

for annual property insurance premium (paid in June) and quarterly NON-ELCA Benevolence and Building &

budget and smaller by comparison and spread over many individual line items.

Year-to-date General Fund Expense variance is made up of combinations of over and under variances. The largest

over budget variances are from the annual property insurance premium, snow removal, yard care & landscaping

and Gross Pay Non-Clergy. The significant under budget variances are from Building & Grounds-Repairs &
