A French expedition to Algeria forced the Dey of Alg iers to cap1tulate on 5 July 1830; but a long war against the Arabs of the interior did not end till the surrender of their leader, Abd-ei -Kader, on 23 December 1847. From then on, in spite of further rismgs of the natives. many Europeans were settled in Algeria. Until 1924 French stamps were used without overprint.
