Speaker: Renée Bondi: A life filled with excitement. A future filled with hope. A tragic accident. End of story? Not hardly...It’s just the beginning. An incredibly gifted Christian singer and voice teacher before her accident, Renée has transformed her gifts to include a dynamic speaking ability that grabs her audience. Her story is being shared by millions, by the only one who could tell it...Renée herself! Renée will be starting her talk at 7:30pm in the church, after the 6pm dinner in the parish hall. Be sure to bring your side dishes or desserts to accompany the provided hamburgers and hotdogs).

Handcrafted Items from the Holy Land Next weekend a family from the Holy Land (Bethlehem) will be selling religious handcrafted items made from olive wood. Proceeds from the sale of these items will go towards support of Catholic families in the Holy Land who are experiencing political strife. Due to the violence and

discrimination towards Christians in the Holy Land, most of the families have left their country and moved to different parts of the world. There are now less than 1.2 percent of the population left trying to support themselves. Please help support these families by purchasing their goods.

Yoga Class Cancelled July 18th To accommodate VBS this upcoming week, which will be utilizing all of the parish hall on Monday, July 18th, we are cancelling this week’s Yoga Class. We will resume on Monday, July 25th. To contact Meleena, please email [email protected].

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 17, 2016

JMJ 17 July, 2016 My Dearest Parish Family, God be with us always. In a few days we will have the opportunity to celebrate the Feast of Santiago de Compostela (St. James the Great) our Parish’s Patron Saint, with our version of the Camino de Santiago. We have scheduled this event on the Saturday closest to the Feast of St. James which is July 25. I am including in this letter an article written by Jaime Mariño, a Spanish journalist who now resides in Madrid but worked previously in the city of Santiago de Compostela. May this article provide more knowledge, insight about the Camino and provide for a more meaningful Camino this year. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval A Compostelian Dream of California By Jaime Mariño Chao @Xayme For twenty years I worked in the city of Santiago de Compostela, a few meters away from the Cathedral. I was a Technical Specialist in the Historical Archive and every morning I had half an hour to get a coffee or simply to relax. During twenty years I went to the Cathedral every single day. I cannot exactly say what took me there. I confess that I was never a religious person, but without knowing why, going there would bring me peace. I would run my fingers through the stones in the wall and I could feel a thousand years of history. A thousand years of pilgrims, men, women and children, with their dreams and their sorrows that had felt the call to walk there. Through those stones I could feel them, connect with them. I would sit in the Pilgrim Church called “Corticela”, within the Cathedral, and I would watch the arrival of the new pilgrims, like a river of human beings. I would hear the priest recite, over the loudspeakers their countries of origin. “From Norway, two pilgrims; from Russia, one pilgrim; from United States, three pilgrims; from Argentina, one pilgrim…” the Priest would say, and then continue like that for several minutes. It was like a litany of countries from all corners of our world. All these people had dreams of walking to Santiago de Compostela one day. But, what was my “camino”, I would ask! My childhood dream was to travel to California. Walk from Oregon along the coast without haste and getting to know the entire state. But that dream had nothing mythical. The pilgrims walked with a goal: Santiago. But in

California I didn’t have that goal. But why did I want so much to go there? The years passed and I came to work to Madrid. I turned forty and then forty-five, but my dream of California still lived in my heart. One day, searching on the Internet, I wanted to know if there was another placed called Santiago de Compostela, like there is another San Francisco, San Antonio or Corpus Christi. To my surprise, the first result read “Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church”. I immediately identified two letters that made me jump out of my chair: CA. I visited the page, read about the parish and about Lake Forest, I even went ahead and wrote to Lyanamar, not really knowing why. The fact is, that in a strange way, I knew that I wanted to get connected to that place. I knew nothing about it, didn’t know the people living there, I didn’t know if I’d be welcomed. But something was certain: I had found the place I wanted to walk to, I had found my “camino”.

No sé decir exactamente qué me llevaba allí. Me preguntaba yo. Me vine a trabajar a Madrid.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 17, 2016

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday’s “Good Samaritan” parable concluded with Jesus’ command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha’s hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising Mary’s “hands-off” as “choosing the better part” (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listen-ing (10:39), leaving Martha “burdened with much serving by herself” (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence “superior,” but the active life of earning a living, raising a family, running parishes, schools, hospi-tals, and social service ministries “second-class” disciple-ship? No; Jesus’ example is not either/or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This Jubilee Y ear of Mercy offers us Jesus’ two-fold challenge: both “go and do” and “sit and listen.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Among the attributes of God, although they are all equal, mercy shines with even more brilliance than justice. —Miguel de Cervantes

Mental Health Awareness Ministry This brand new ministry to Santiago will be coordinated

by Laurie Alsted.

♦ Do you love someone with a mental illness?

The purpose of the ministry is to be a supportive and rich resource for individuals and families affected by mental illnesses. Together with the Church, the Diocese of Orange, community resources, and our own congregation, we endeavor to break the

stigma of shame and isolation associated with the phrase “mental illness” in order to bring hope and healing to our fellow parishioners and community.

♦ Did you know one in four people have a mental illness?

Your willingness, love, compassion and experience are needed to spread the message of hope and healing to those affected by mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, PTSD, OCD, and others. Together we can help our parish family and community.

Laurie can be reached at [email protected], or by phone at 949-424-3686.
