Introduction

This compilation is offered with three primary purposes. The first is to remind

researchers that in many instances it is no longer necessary to travel in order to view

and study historical maps. Thanks to the digital age as well as to generous individuals

and institutions, many rare maps are available online and can even be downloaded to

personal computers. In the present case, three magnanimous Internet sources have

been used: the David Rumsey Map Collection (Rumsey), the Library of Congress(LOC), and the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA).

The second goal is to make it relatively simple to access the complete versions

of the selections illustrated here. Following the date, attributed author, and source

abbreviation for the Rumsey and TSLA maps, users will find an item number that,

when typed into the search box of the appropriate website, will lead to the referenced

map. As for LOC maps, the provided website address will itself lead directly to themap.

Third, for those interested in the Nashville area of Tennessee, it is hoped that the

samples presented herein are broad enough for use without the necessity of navigating

to the full map. As a final reminder, it should be noted that although antique maps are

generally no longer under copyright protection each user must necessarily decide

whether to seek permission for republication and how to attribute items properly.
