Ambassador Susanne SZECH-KOUNDOUROS is Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the European Union. From 2014 to 2018 she was European Coordinator in the Office of the Deputy Chair of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group and from 2012 to 2014 Director for Energy in the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy. Ambassador Szech-Koundouros was also Head of the Economic Department in the Permanent Representation of Germany to the European Union. Ambassador Szech-Koundouros has a law degree from the University of Bonn.

Hans-Otto PÖRTNER is Professor and Head of the Department of Integrative Ecophysiology at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Germany. In 2015, he was elected Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability for the Sixth Assessment Cycle. He is also Associate Editor of Physiology for Marine Biology and Co-editor of Thermal Biology. His research interests include the effects of climate warming, ocean acidification, and hypoxia on marine animals and ecosystems with a focus on the links between ecological, physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms limiting tolerance and shaping biogeography and ecosystem functioning.

René HAAK is Head of Division 724 ‘Global Change – Climate – Biodiversity’ in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Previously, he was Head of the Business and Economics Section and Deputy Director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo. From 2011 – 2014 he was Head of the Science and Technology Section in the German Embassy in Beijing. René Haak has a PhD degree in Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin and a degree in business administration from the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin). He is Professor at the University of Mainz, Germany.

Sigi GRUBER is Head of Unit for 'Healthy Oceans & Seas' in the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission. The unit coordinates the All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance and the Blue Growth calls under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The unit also monitors and contributes to specific Sea basin Initiatives in the MED, Black Sea, Arctic, the Joint Programming Initiatives Healthy and Productive Oceans (JPI-Oceans), and the Baltic Sea Research and Development Programme (BONUS). Since joining the European Commission in 1991, Sigi Gruber has had different responsibilities related to Education and Training as well as Research. Before that, she worked in the public and private sectors in Italy and Germany.

Fanny DOUVERE is Coordinator of the Marine Programme at UNESCO's World Heritage Centre in Paris. The Programme’s mission is to ensure the 49 marine sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List are conserved and sustainably managed so future generations can continue to enjoy them. She further oversees the development of the World Heritage marine managers network across these marine protected areas, which span 37 countries and stretch from the tropics to the poles. Prior to her work at the World Heritage Centre, she co-initiated the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) initiative at UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

Detlef STAMMER is Professor, Head of Remote Sensing and Assimilation as well as Director of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability at the University of Hamburg. He is also Chair of the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme. After completing a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography at the University of Kiel, Detlef Stammer took a postdoctoral position at MIT, where he subsequently became Principal Research Scientist. In 1999 he was appointed to a tenured faculty position at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego. Detlef remained in USA until 2003, when he returned to Germany to take up a Professorship at the at the University of Hamburg. His research interests include the role of the ocean in climate variability and sea level change.

Mininnguaq KLEIST is Head of the Greenland Representation to the EU. Prior to his posting in Brussels, Mininnguaq Kleist was Director of The Premier´s Office. He has worked extensively on the development of self-government of Greenland, including as Special Advisor to the Greenland-Danish Self-Government Commission from 2005 to 2008. He also led the Self-Government Office under the Home Rule Government from 2007 to 2009, during which the referendum on the introduction of Self-Government was held. Mininnguaq Kleist has also worked in the management of the Department of Foreign Affairs with responsibilities for climate policies, bilateral affairs and EU relations. He has a Masters in Philosophy from Aarhus University.

Ramon Van BARNEVELD is Deputy Head of the Unit for Ocean Governance, Law of the Sea, Arctic Policy in the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE) of the European Commission. Before joining DG MARE in 2012, he worked in several Directorates General of the European Commission, including DG Communication, DG Internal Market and Services and DG Health and Consumers. Ramon van Barneveld has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam and is a graduate from the Rhodes Academy for Ocean Law and Policy.

Geneviève PONS is Director of the Brussels Office of the Jacques Delors Institute. Pons was recently appointed to the European Union Mission Assembly for Healthy Oceans, Seas, Coastal and Inland Waters. She is an honorary Director of the European Commission and was in charge of environment and climate matters in Jacques Delors’ Cabinet during his last two mandates as President of the European Commission (1991-1995). Geneviève Pons has since also been Director of the Legal Service of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Director of the European Policy Office of WWF. She is an active member of the Antarctica2020 coalition and the Ocean Unite Network.
