Our Mission is to ... inspire and educate Native American Youth to be Christian servants of God and man. September, 2016 Volume 24 #9 They’re Back! By Diana Fish, Director of Development The first day of school brings back many happy memories for me. The anticipation of reuniting with old friends, and the thrill of making new ones was something I looked forward to. For our children at Holbrook Indian School that excitement is mixed with the anxiety of leaving home. For some like Mya, it is their first time away from their family. Mya is a doe-eyed, little girl with a smile that would melt your heart. She is in first grade, and is the youngest student to register at Holbrook this year. Mya is excited to come to school with her older brother Leo who is in the third grade. At home Mya and her grandmother sleep on the floor together. Her grandmother thought it would be best for Mya to come to Holbrook where she would have a bed of her own to sleep in, and the benefit of a Christian education. At the end of the first day Mya followed Leo around on the commons not letting him get too far from sight. When it came time for the boys and girls to return to their dorms Mya cried for her brother. As tears streamed down her face the Dean of Students, Jovannah Poor Bear-Adams, assured her that everything would be alright, and that she would see her brother again in the morning. Mya had trouble falling to sleep without her grand- mother close by her. To comfort her Jovannah sweetly sang Jesus Loves Me until she fell peacefully to sleep. The next morning Mya woke up full of excitement and ready for her first day of school. Please keep Mya, Leo, and all of our students in your prayers. ■ “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. They’re Back!By Diana Fish, Director of Development

The first day of school brings back many happy memories for me.

Principal’s MessageDear Friends,God is good, all the time--all the time, God is good. Have you ever found yourself doubting whether God is go-ing to answer your prayer? Hopefully not, but there is a rea-son why Paul asked God to increase his faith and help his unbelief. I have had my share of faithless and unbelieving moments. In each of those moments, in His own timing, God has come through just at the right time. You would think that I have learned my lesson!

Registration Sunday, on August 14, was hectic, but less so than usual. Here is where the answers to prayer start: Number one: For the first time in my four years at Holbrook Indian School (HIS), the Student Association (SA) officers came back to school three days early to work on leadership skills and to help with registration. Samantha Gorman (class of 2011), our registrar, did a great job in planning for this event. For those of you who do not know, registration at HIS can be chaotic. Families often bring all members, which usu-ally include babies and toddlers. And there is no such thing as a lunch break. Number two: The cohesiveness of the faculty and staff is at its highest level since I have been here, but filling the open positions for this school year was not easy. A few of us worked during our summer vacations due to circumstances that seemed to come out of left field. But God came through and brought us just the right team members. One of my frequent comments to my colleagues is, “Praise God when

there is no trouble, and please do not be surprised when trou-ble comes. Keep in mind that God has promised us that in this world we will have trouble, but we should not worry, because he has overcome the world.” John 16:33 Number three: And then our students arrived. Each year we ask God to send us young people that we can help—And as we trust in Him we are not disappointed. Through God’s guidance, the culture at HIS is slowly but surely transform-ing from one of distrust and drama, to one of cohesiveness and collaboration. The SA officers have been instrumental in setting the tone. We have honed the attire and electronic device policy, but without the cooperation and involvement of the SA officers, we would not have the acceptance that we saw today during our first assembly. I relate these answers to prayer because I want you to know the effect your financial support and prayers are having. Please keep them coming. We need Him every hour of every day. God has a few more prayers to answer. We will wait pa-tiently for Him to do so in His perfect timing.

In His Service,

Pedro L. Ojeda
