Jose Parica Breaks the Ice at Childress
LEXINGTON- After several high finishes in 1985, Jose Parica finally won his first major 9-ball tournament, The 5th Annual Clyde Childress Open. In races to eleven, Parica defeated Davenport (5), Bell (10), Strickland (10), Hopkins (8), Varner (8), suffered a loss to Varner 7-11, and then outpointed Varner (10) for the title and the $5,840 first prize. A bank pool division was featured once again as Gary Spaeth won the $2,600 jackpot.

ACCU-FACTS Jose Parica won three of his matches 11-10. Gary Spaeth lost both of his matches 10-11. Efren Reyes shot four .900's: .919, .911, .903, and .900. Reyes, MacDonald, and Brlenza shot .900's yet still lost. The 9-ball tournament produced twenty-three .900's and eight "wire" matches.
Parica Edges Varner in Photo Finish
It was only a matter of time before the talented
Jose Parica would clinch a major 9-ball title, yet
it wasn't decided until the last rack of the last
session in which Parica finally defeated Nick Varner
11-10. When congratulated, he reminded those present
that he won "a mini and a biggie" referring to the
mini tournament that he had copped earlier in the
week with an equally strong field, and of course,
the major title.
Monroe and Dinah Brock added $10,000 to the
forty-eight player 9-Ball division and $1,000 to the
thirty-two player Banks division. The event was
hosted by The Sheraton Inn - Lexington South and
directed by Pat Fleming. Five Brunswick tables were
provided by The Louisville Billiard Supply and
covered with Simonis. It was the first sanctioned
event for the new PBA player's association.
Both divisions required two final matches. The banks
division saw Gary Spaeth forge his way through the
loser's bracket winning seven sessions in a row
including his last two wins over Wade Crane. The
9-ball division had Parica in the winner's bracket
(continued on page 17)
Notable matches The Clyde Childress Open produced its share of
notable matches. The number in parentheses is the
player's TPA for that session.
With Ton Brown (.836) leading 10-2 and maintaining
an outstanding TPA of .947, the tide turned. Gary
Hutchings (.874) controlled the match for the next
seven racks preventing Brown from pocketing a
single ball and forcing Brown to either kick or
play safety. Eventually, a missed kick by
Hutchings after a Brown safety allowed Brown to
close out the set 11-9.
During an unusual rack in which Larry Hubbart
(.750) played six consecutive safeties forcing
Terry Bell (.832) to kick six consecutive times,
Bell still managed to win the rack! Final score:
Bell 11, Hubbart 8.
After knotting the score at 6-6, and failing to
pocket a ball on the next break, Paul Brienza
(.902) never shot again. Dave Bollnan (.909) ran
that rack, then broke and ran out the rest of the
set to win 11-6.
By the time Bob Opsahl (.833) had pocketed a total
of nine balls, he was leading 4-0. He never turned

Interview Nick Varner: "PERSONALLY, I THINK I 'D LIKE TO PLAY A GAME WHERE YOU DON'T HAVE TO COMPETE AGAINST A PLAYER, BUT JUST COMPETE AGAINST THE GAME OF POOL."
ACCU-STATS: What do you t h i n k i s

major events?
VARNER: I t h i n k a l o t of i t has to

t h e y ' r e on the r i g h t t rack now.
They're s t a r t i n g to spread i t out

305* or AQ% o f the p r i z e money
f i r s t i s going to get i t because
they can ' t f i l l i t up w i th

ACCU-STATS: Do you th ink tha t
there should be seeding at
tournaments?
VARNER: I j u s t d o n ' t t h ink tha t
you could get away w i th seeding
r i g h t now. Persona l l y , i f I was
adding $40-50,000 to an event, I
be l ieve 1 would seed because I
t h ink i t might help the ga te . I
t h ink tha t maybe seeding has been
overlooked as far as a chance to
draw a good ga te .
ACCU-STATS: T h e r e h a v e b e e n

formats t r i e d i n the l a s t ten
years such as double e l i m i n a t i o n ,
two -ou t -o f - t h ree s e t s , and round

best format?
VARNER: Right now, probably the
best t h i ng i s double e l i m i n a t i o n
al though i t might be nice to see
some s ing le e l i m i n a t i o n . I t h ink
tha t i f the races are long enough,
s ing le e l i m i n a t i o n would be good
and i t might be more i n t e r e s t i n g
from the crowd standpoint because
a guy i s gone i f he gets beat . I f

I t h i n k I ' d l i k e to play a game
where you don ' t have to compete
against a p layer but j u s t compete
against the game of p o o l .
ACCU-STATS: How do you prepare for
a tournament?
VARNER: I t r y t o log as much
p lay ing time as I can. There are
c e r t a i n d r i l l s t ha t I work on and
they are usua l ly or ien ted around
th ings that you have t roub le w i t h ,
f o r ins tance, r a i l shots where you
have to cut the b a l l t h i n down the
r a i l .
Varner:"l THINK I ENJOY ONE POCKET THE BEST."
ACCU-STATS: How do you prepare f o r
a match?
VARNER: What I t h i n k i s r e a l
important i s g e t t i n g used to the
tab le when you get to the
tournament, g e t t i n g used to the
speed and where to aim. I t seems
that you've got to aim d i f f e r e n t .
I t ' 8 not as simple as p r a c t i c i n g
a t home and you ' re i n dead s t r oke ,
and then you go to the tournament
and you f e e l the same way. You
look up there and you don ' t know
q u i t e where tha t po in t i s a t . Then
when you f i n i s h ou t , usual ly you
know where t h a t po in t i s a t .

What's Next? Our next issue of Accu-Stats will feature the Classic
Cup V held in Aurora, Illinois. Since the Classic Cup
tournament immediately followed the Childress, the
Classic Cup issue will be mailed only ten days after
this issue. Incidentally, the Classic Cup V winner
was Jose Parica (That's two in a row!) and Resorts'
"Last Call for 9-Ball" winner was Jim Rempe. Although
this year's tournament season got off to a late start
you can still expect ten issues of Accu-Stats.

ROCKAWAY, NJ (2/23-24/86) - Rockaway Billiards and
Accu-Stats invited eight local players to participate
in a test program utilizing Accu-Stats' statistics on
an amateur basis. Room owners Ken & Pat Boehm
supplied the location and a beautiful trophy while
Accu-Stats added $100 to the prize fund. The entry
fee for the round robin tournament was only $25 yet
produced prizes of $200 for first, $125 for second,
and $75 for third. Another $100 was distributed for
the winners of various statistical categories such as
"Break Performance", "Kick Performance", and "Total
Performance." The format was designed to give the
participants an opportunity to compare themselves
statistically with each other as well as comparing
their stats with professional tournament results.

Accu-Stats Analysis of In-The Money Winners:
Randy Bennett: Without question, he played the best
pool overall. Even though he ranked low on his
break, he posted the best W-L record, the best
TPA averages, and kick averages. He was rewarded
with $275 for his skills.
Dave Ascolese: His second place finish was due in
part to his exceptional "Break Performance." He
had the right combination of breaking hard and at
the same time holding his scratches to a minimum.
He scratched only twice in fifty-nine breaks!
Ken Stanlick: His tie for second place may be
improved next time now that he has learned that
scratching on the break 175. of the time is a bit
much! (IOS* is average.)

Parica Edges Varner (continued from page 3)
waiting for Nick Varner. Varner had to defeat Parica
twice and fell one short.
The Finals
It appeared to be all over especially after Jose
Parica with a 10-6 lead in the deciding match made a
ball on the break and had an open shot. But Parica
missed that shot and Varner ran out. New score 10-7.
Then once again Parica had a chance to close the
door yet missed an easy billiard on the nine ball.
Varner ran that rack. New score: 10-8. Parica made a
ball and scratched the next rack! Varner ran out,
then broke and ran out again. New score: 10-10.
Varner made a ball on the break, missed a bank shot
and it was all over as Parica ran out for the win.
Notable matches (continued from page 3)
back as he defeated Paul Brienza (.761) 11-5.
From a 3-8 deficit, Gary Spaeth (.878) played well
and managed to even up the score at 10-10. After a
series of safeties and kicks, Grady Mathews (.861)
was forced to kick with four balls left on the
table. Yes, he lucked in the nine ball to win
11-10.
After some exceptional play by Jr. Harris (.810),
David Howard (.837) fell behind 0-7. Howard then
took control and won the next eleven racks to post
an 11-7 win.
Bob Opaahl (.744) and Howard Vickery (.813) had
the distinction of playing the longest rack of the
tournament. It required twenty-one turns at the
table before Vickery sunk the nine ball. Final
score: Vickery 11, Opsahl 5.
Exhibiting the best play of the tournament, Earl
Strickland (.943) ran nine balls nine times while
defeating the unfortunate recipient of this
barrage, Ton Brown (.853) 11-4.
After assuming a commanding lead of 10-5, Earl
Strickland (.863) failed to pocket another ball.
Jose Parica (.836) won the next six racks for his
second photo finish win.
In an unusual distribution of balls pocketed,
Danny DiLiberto (.855) pocketed 106 balls while
Jay Swanson (.851) pocketed only 57. DiLiberto
still lost 9-11.
While trailing 5-8, Jose Parica (.906) miscued on
the four ball and accidentally banked it. Before
Nick Varner (.896) could hit another object ball,
Parica was in the lead 10-8. Final score: Parica
11, Varner 9.

ACCU-STATS: Who have you admired most inside and
outside of pool?
VARNER: Inside, Luther Lassiter. Outside, Jack
Nicholas.
ACCU-STATS: If you were the most influential person
in the billiard industry, what would you do?
VARNER: I'd concentrate on getting a tour on
television. That would have the most impact on the
game from all levels, the bottom to the top.
Varner:"I LIKE STRAIGHT POOL, BUT IT HAS ONE BIG DRAWBACK. I ENJOY RUNNING A HUNDRED BALLS, BUT I DON'T ENJOY SITTING THERE WATCHING MY OPPONENT RUN A HUNDRED."
ACCU-STATS: You play a l l games and have been a

Arlington Rec Open •
SAN BERARDINO, CA (2/20-23/86) - The Arlington Recre
ation $10,000 Mixed 9-Ball Open, the first tournament
of any true stature to be held in the San Bernardino
area proved to be a rousing success. Promoters John
Ssnders (Arlington John) and Herb Wiles (Herb Superb)
deserve much credit for the well planned, promoted,
and organized event.
The race to nine, double elimination event quickly
drew a full field of thirty-two due in part to the
$5,200 added by Riverdale's Arlington Recreation
Supply and The Southern California Billiard Dealers
Association (SCBDA). An impressive thirty-two page
spectator program featuring player profiles, inter
esting articles, official rules, and advertising
helped put a finishing touch on the event.

there watching my opponent run a hundred. And you
have to sit down so long.
ACCU-STATS: Do you remember in Livonia, Michigan when
four different players ran a hundred balls on you
right in a row?
VARNER: Yes, I remember that. I did some sitting that
day. I went through the fir8t bracket and I must have
had a 20-25 ball per inning average. Then I went 0-7
in the final round robin. The least anybody run on me
waa eighty.
