Problem Statement

How students from the Occupational Health Specialty Achieve

the Technical English if they do not learn the Specific Technical

Language at Colegio Técnico Profesional La Suiza.

General Objective

To diagnose the need of technical English language in students

from the Occupational Health Specialty at Colegio Técnico

Profesional La Suiza by bringing some tools to improve it.

Specific Objectives

• To identify the components of the MEP English syllabus.

• To describe the impact of Language Teaching Methodology on

the linguistic competences of students.

• To demonstrate that the teaching of technical English helps in

the learning of the foreign language.

• To develop a Proposal for teaching English especially for the

students of the Occupational Health Specialty.

Institutional framework

La Suiza Professional and Technical High School is located in

the Community of La Suiza in the second district of the canton of

Turrialba.

The institution offers different specialties such as Rural Tourism,

Executive Secretary, Fashion Design, Accountability, Computers

Assistance, Productivity and Quality and Occupational Health,

those specialties have English lessons for the technical part.

Agricultural, Agro-ecology and Agro-industry do not have English

Technical lessons.

Theoretical framework

Education has been considered an important and valuableelement used for the development of the societies aroundthe world.

The article 78, the Political Constitution of the Republic ofCosta Rica (1949) establishes pre-scholar and general basiceducation are obligatory, free and financed by the Government.

La Ley Fundamental de Educación in Costa Rica (2001)establishes the goals of Costa Rican Education as thefollowing ones: formation of citizens who love their Nation,aware of their duties, rights and fundamental liberties, witha deep sense of responsibility and respect towards humandignity. Then, education contributes with the completedevelopment of human personality.

Methodogical framework

It is a descriptive paradigm. The descriptive research aims to get the

identification of the relations that exist between two or more variable.

The students from La Suiza Technical and Professional High School

are the protagonists of the following investigation. At the same time,

the English teachers.

The sample corresponds to 11th graders. It has 11 students. Also, 5

Technical English teachers.

Instruments: Observation, Interviews and Questionnaire.

Analysis of observation

• Introductions in the business activities.

• Students participate a lot because they can recognize the

information from previous classes.

• Recognize and exemplify occupations.

• Identify jobs and their functions.

• Frustrated to review units that they learned years old.

Analysis of the interview

• 5 teachers in La Suiza Technical and Professional HighSchool.

• Producing orally the foreign language in the classroom.

• Grammar very important for structures.

• MEP syllabus.

• Teacher’s responsibilities.

• Teaching specific language.

Conclusions

• The MEP English Syllabus does not have the relevant informationstudents need.

• The work of the teachers changes the student’s perspectives, so itmeans that depending on the methodology of teachers, studentscould achieve or not the knowledge or the goals.

• Students do not have all the tools to be comfortable tocommunicate using the foreign language they acquired in thespecialty.

• The technical language could bring to students the chance todevelop their abilities learned through the specialty process.

• A concrete vocabulary is an important base for successfullymastering a new technical foreign language.

Recommendations

• The MEP should develop specific programs to differentspecialties.

• Teachers could reinforce the program with a workablemethodology.

• English competence of students could improve if they will have avery specific program for each specialty.

• The technical language could bring to students the chance todevelop their abilities learned through the specialty process.

• The learning of concrete words is very important for successfullymastering the foreign language.

Impacts of the Proposal

Academic Impact

The fundamental purpose of this educational compilation is theoptimum development of the High School students as a skillful,able, and determined person.

Institutional Impact

This provides a rigorous learning based on a specific language,social and emotional learning, and access to new technologies;specially, in the Occupational Health Specialty.

Other derived researches

• Researchers could investigate about Ministerio de Educación

Pública Programs or MEP syllabus based on English for

conversation.

• Researchers could develop an investigation about programs

of other specialties according to the specific language

students achieve.
