morning and afternoon classes indicating your top four choices for each, using one through four (one as your first choice, four as your last choice). College for Kids provides accelerated learning experiences specifically for academically talented students completing grades 3 - 9. College for Kids combines rigorous academic experiences with fun and exciting social opportunities. CK classes address contemporary issues and problems using a higher level of integrative, analytical, and critical thinking. Class curriculum encourages awareness of and respect for divergence in thought among academic peers. The CK experience also allows students to explore different academic content and methodologies in various disciplines. College for Kids also addresses the physical needs of students today. Everyday CK takes time for physical exercise, in various classes and during Recreation time. Exercise and physical fitness are necessary to fully realize one’s potential. Please be sure to bring comfortable, loose fitting clothing, tennis shoes that lace and SOCKS! College for Kids provides an excellent opportunity for gifted students to learn and socialize with their intellectual peers. Rather than being singled out and labeled as the “smart kid” in a regular classroom, students are surrounded by peers who share their interests and abilities. It is the friendships, just as much as the learning, that make kids want to return to College for Kids year after year. This booklet contains all the information you need to enroll in College for Kids 2012. If you have any questions or need additional forms (you have CK’s permission to copy any part of the booklet for enrollment purposes), write, call oar FAX your inquiries. Please remember it is important to get your application in early, classes and dormitory facilities often fill quickly. Early registration can also save you money. Please be sure to read this entire booklet. Please note 2012 brings changes in the health form. The College for Kids staff and I look forward to a unique and challenging experience this summer as we join together for a week of learning, rowing, and growing. Sue Craghead Director for College for Kids

Remember to leave your cell phones, electronics and video games at home!

The ACT college entrance exam presents 60 multiple-choice questions that require you to use reasoning skills to solve practical problems in mathematics. In the Mathematics part of the ACT three sub-scores are based on six content areas: pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. Expect to review the basic formulas and computational skills of algebra to answer the ACT mathematics problems. Learn to use the TI-84 graphing calculator along with the ACT program to improve performance on the test. To fully maximize this class you should have completed High School Algebra 1. Instructor: Lisa Lackman, Calculus Teacher, Blair Oaks High School

College for Kids courses are designed with gifted students in mind, inviting them to direct their considerable talent and energy toward

interdisciplinary projects and practical problem solving. CK students engage in service-learning, present facts in a mock trial setting and learn

advanced math and science by having the opportunity to dissect, mix chemicals and nurture students as critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. They also create masterful prose and solve complex equations. Whether led by a teacher, fellow gifted peer or their own self-discipline, College for Kids students surprise even themselves by how much they

can learn, achieve and grow in just one short week.

THE COLLEGE FOR KIDS EXPERIENCE

"CK is a whole different life. A life where you don't have to be

anyone but yourself, where everyone accepts you for you. You

can take off any masks you use to fit in with the rest of the

world and just be you. When it’s over you’re left in a haze of

"Did that really just happen? Is it over?" You are left desperately

trying to take hold of every little detail. Reliving it. Because just

as soon as it starts, it’s over. A dream. A roller coaster. A vague

memory of that week that amazing week, that changes your life

each time you go away from it, whether you know it or not. You

make friends you never would have made before. Try things

that make you step out of your box, because at CK there is no

box. After you have left, months later, after it’s over and done,

forgotten, something, even the tiniest something reminds you of

that unforgettable week. You stay up at night, just thinking over

every detail. Trying once again to relive it. Because nothing

can compare to one week, one amazing, indescribable, life

changing week at College for Kids. A second home. :)"

Academics are certainly an important focus of every College for Kids day.

Dedicated instructors and career experts reserve a week or two each

summer to share their passionate interests. This combination makes for the

ideal learning environment - enticing curriculum, teachers with ingenuity

and excited students.

CK offers a variety of course choices. Students have opportunities to

sample weeklong, intensive, cognitive-oriented studies such as biology,

chemistry, classical studies, psychology, rockets and historical mysteries.

Classes such as American Sign Language, Digital Photography, and Bank

on Business give students the opportunity to learn new skills. Introductory

exploration courses, such as fine arts, psychology, dance and fitness help

meet the affective needs of gifted students through self-expression and

communication dynamics. CK continues to foster favorite traditions.

Evening activities include off-campus field trips, speakers, and socializing

activities.

This attitude is continued through the residential life component of the

summer program. Residential advisors live in the halls with students.

CK RAs, who attend college in various states during the school year, bring

enthusiasm and unique experiences to CK. We hope they become your

friends and mentors.

Be sure to pack your most comfortable walking shoes that tie, socks, and

loose clothing for vigorous physical activity! Leave your electronic games

and equipment at home because your free time is action packed. Be sure to

bring a good book for reading at bedtime. If you have a talent, come

prepared to perform in the talent show!

College for Kids is often a haven for gifted students who find others just

like them, who value a love for learning, enjoy being challenged at school

and have passionate interests. Oar teachers make the curriculum

opportunities possible and the CK atmosphere makes it work. The College

for Kids’ goal is to provide a summer experience that will be long

remembered both on land and sea.

See you there!
