WELCOMEWelcome to the Centennial Issue of Shell World Philippines magazine. January 10, 2014 is a major milestone in the history of Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP). It marks a century of the company’s successful business operations and significant contributions to promotion of sustainable development in the country.

This issue showcases some milestones, innovations and programmes that define Shell as a leading energy company. To give a clear perspective of what a century means to Shell, I would like to share with you our Country Chairman’s message for Shell’s Centennial Year which gives you a glimpse of what Shell in the Philippines has accomplished in a century and what it is aiming for in the next 100 years.

My dear colleagues,

Today, we complete our countdown and we start our celebration of 100 years of Shell in the Philippines. It is a great privilege for all of us to be part of Shell in this momentous occasion. It is rare for any company to achieve 100 years of existence, and it is even more rare for a 100 year-old company to be at its peak and poised for further growth.

As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the past achievement of the men and women who came before us who made Shell what it is today. From its humble beginnings of importing, repacking, and selling kerosene in 1914, today, Shell has evolved in Upstream, Downstream, and Shell Service Centre.

Think about it. We operate Malampaya that supplies 30% of natural gas for electricity that is used by the country. We have one of two refineries in the country, we have 22 depots, close to 1,000 retail sites, 30% market share, and more than 50% brand share preference. These are great achievements. But the most important achievement is in the area of social investments where Shell has focused on education, environment, health, safety and poverty alleviation where we have touched the lives of more than eight million Filipinos. This is truly a great achievement.

As we now focus our sights on the next 100 years, we have the responsibility to build on the legacy of the men and women who came before us: to be the most innovative and competitive energy company in the world including the Philippines. We are starting out in a good place, with significant investment ongoing and planned all across Upstream, Downstream, and Shared Service Centre.

We take great pride in being part of the Shell family in this great occasion. I am confident that the second 100 years of Shell in the country will be even more exciting, more successful, and better than the first 100 years. Why is this so? Because we continue to have the best talents, the best business partners, and we have the Shell values to live by. Congratulations to all of you and Mabuhay tayong lahat!

Shell’s various community relations and communications projects earned recognition from the UA&P Tambuli Awards 2013, 48th and 49th Anvil Awards, and the IABC Philippine Quill Awards 2013.By Josa Marie Salazar

PUBlIC RElATIoNS SoCIETY oF ThE PhIlIPPINES’ ANVIl AWARDSSciP entries were among the distinguished winners of the coveted Anvil trophies, presented by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP).

In the 48th Anvil (2013), Shell’s entries bested 396 entries from top corporations, organisations, institutions, and government agencies. Awards of Merit under the PR Programme on a Sustained

Basis Category were given to Shell Pepeng Pasada Club, Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2012, Shell Young Eco-Savers programme, and Movement Against Malaria’s Biyahe ng Kulambo advocacy campaign. Shell FuelSave Day – Guinness World Record for the Longest Fuel Efficiency Lesson bagged an Award of Merit under the PR Tools – Special Events Category.

For the 49th Anvil Awards, the jury mere rigorous in choosing the deserving programmes.

Shell bagged two Awards of Excellence and two Awards of Merit, rising above more than 300 entries in the competition. Recipients of the Anvil Awards of Excellence were the 46th Shell National Students Art Competition (Arts and Culture Category) and Shell Project KALSADA (Kabataang Ligtas sa Sakuna at Disgrasya). Meanwhile, internal company wide campaign “I COMMIT. Think. Act. Work. With Integrity” won an Anvil Award of Merit in the Good Governance for Sustained Public Relations Programmes

he recent Natural Gas Summit 2014 initiated by natural-gas powered

countries Norway, Russia, Japan, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Spain in collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE) brought together government and energy industry leaders to tackle the need for a more dynamic natural gas industry in the Philippines to continue powering the country’s robust economic growth, forecasted by the International Monetary

Fund (IMF) at 6.3 percentthis year.

ThE MAlAMPAYA MoDEl Pioneer in the country’s natural gas industry, the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project was cited as a model for shaping the future share of natural gas into the country’s energy mix. The birth and commercialisation of Malampaya and the first natural gas policy established for the gas project were tackled in separate discussions

by former Department of Energy (DOE) leaders Dr. Francisco Viray, CEO of Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp., and Jose Victor Emmanuel de Dios, CEO of General Electric.

The gas project was developed in ways that are environmentally, socially and economically responsible since the time when the Camago gas field, connected to the Malampaya reservoir, was discovered in 1989. A 504-kilometer long pipeline transferring natural gas harnessed from the offshore gas platform in Palawan to power generating plants in Batangas was built to avoid fishing grounds and fragile coral reefs.

Malampaya currently provides 30% of the Philippines’ energy needs with natural gas, known as the fuel for sustainable growth and development because it is abundant and cleaner than fossil fuel.

More than energy, Malampaya brings sustainable development in communities where it operates through its various social investment programmes

implemented by Malampaya Foundation, Inc.

ACCElERATING GAS INVESTMENTSSpeaking at the forum, Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX) Managing Director Sebastian Quiniones urged for more drilling and exploration activities for natural gas production in the country. “The Philippines is behind other Southeast Asian countries in terms of upstream exploration activities for natural gas. Only 566 wells have been drilled in the Philippines in the last 100 years, compared to 400 wells drilled in Indonesia in just one year, according to the Petroleum Association of the Philippines.”

Fuelling unprecedented economic growth calls for more investments in unlocking indigenous sources of sustainable power. “The country needs some 300,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD), but local production only supplies 60,000 BOPD through the Malampaya Project and about 10,000 BOPD from other smaller projects,” said Quiniones.

Quiniones made recommendations to government to boost natural gas investments in the country, such as developing a favorable investment climate through the

elimination of bottlenecks, more fiscal incentives, consistency in policy and regulations, improved infrastructure and strengthened government interagency collaboration through the Executive Order 60 or Philippine Upstream Petroleum Task Force.

On a similar note, Rufino Bomasang, Chairman of Otto Energy Philippines, Inc., PhilCarbon, Inc. and Philippine Chamber of Coal Mines, Inc., and former President and CEO of Philippine National Oil Company – Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC) affirmed that the Philippines’ vast energy reservoir potential remains untapped. Investments are needed to develop additional gas fields and the government, to be able to accelerate investments for developing the country’s gas market and gas infrastructure, should start with lessons learned from the world-class Malampaya Gas Project.

PRoMoTING GAS ADVoCACYA product of strong public-private partnership, the Malampaya Gas Project is at the forefront of the natural gas advocacy in the country. It remains one of the largest and most significant investments in Philippine history that gave birth to the country’s gas industry

and promoted energy efficiency. The gas project is now on its next phases of development, the Malampaya Phase 2 and 3 which will maintain the project’s current level of gas production and further support energy security for Filipinos.

SPEX, on behalf of DOE and Joint Venture Partners Chevron Malampaya LLC and PNOC-EC, develops and operates the Malampaya Gas Project using expertise drawn from Shell’s extensive global experience in deepwater technology and oil and gas exploration and production. DOE Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla in his closing remarks underscored the importance of the natural gas advocacy in the country. He urged for more dialogues on natural gas to be held for it “solidifies our nation’s aspiration on developing our natural gas industry…I do hope that we have more of these sessions where we [the government] learn a lot from the private sector and the private sector will get input on where we’re going with gas.”

CLEAN OUT THE PIPESSMART PIGSShell maintains safe and efficient operations in its facilities through an engineering solution, which ensures the integrity of its pipelines. By Yna Mari Isobel M. Alihan and Rey Labajo

ave you ever imagined a muddy farm animal – a pig – seen as one of the

major tools to maintain miles of oil pipelines?

These squealing mammals have been removing and cleaning wax and mineral deposits from the energy highways of technology companies. These pigs are as wide as trees but can still fit in pipes. The irony of the image of a muddy pig compares its use in the pipelines – a device dislodging debris and cleans the pipe walls.

SMART PIGS IN ShEllThe Shell Bacolod JO Terminal in Visayas meets an intelligent innovation, as the first ever and probably the longest (at 2.2 kM) Piggable Submarine Fuel Pipeline was commissioned last April of this year, with the cooperation of Shell Philippines Trading & Supply (T&S) with

the Engineering and Facilities Department.

“The successful commissioning of the Piggable Submarine Fuel Pipeline at Bacolod JO Terminal paved the way for the initiation of similar projects in other Shell terminals. With pipeline pigging seen to be the future of marine cargolines, the learning in Bacolod will be applied next in other terminal sites such as Pasacao, and Poro wherein a similar piggable line for main fuels is well under way and nearing completion,” said Mario Monsalud, Shell Philippines Facilities Manager.

WhY PUT PIGS?In the past, product receiving in Bacolod JO Terminal for white oil products is done through the terminal’s 2.2-kilometre white oil cargoline and employs product-to-product procedure, using seawater as medium for line clearing. The white oil

cargoline therefore rests on salty seawater most of the time.

During the construction of the white cargoline, the internal epoxy lining of some sections of the cargoline were affected by the on-site welding. Microbiologically-induced corrosion, which refers to the possibility of microorganisms to be involved in the deterioration of metallic and non-metallic materials, due to saltwater caused attacks on the internal pipeline and development of perforations or holes.

The marine pipeline has 97 field joints in the middle of two 12-metre spools. Leaks were found in six field joints since 2009, the sections of which have been replaced. The integrity of the remaining 91 field joints remains in question.

Shell proposed an upgrade into a piggable cargoline to

happen, cracks and flaws in the line can be disastrous, hence the need to do pigging.

These “smart pigs” are inserted in the pipeline, which travel freely driven by product flow. Based on tasks in different areas, pigs perform cleaning, separating products in-line or dewatering the line; provide information on the condition of the pipeline and the extent and location of any problem; and become plugs to isolate pipelines.

Legend has it that the pigs in the earlier times were stuffed in burlap bags, which will cause them to squeal just like the sound of the scraping “pig” through a pipeline.

ShEll INNoVATESGoing full swing in innovation and technology, Shell upgrades its technology plan, which includes subsea systems, onshore pipelines, and special equipment for various threats.

A success story of the first Piggable Marine Pipeline was also commissioned in Pasacao Terminal in the Bicol region, which dates back in February 2012. A major milestone for Shell Philippines Supply & Distribution, as it commissioned the E98 Pigged Cargo line.

The Pasacao terminal has an average annual throughput of 118,700 Million litres with an existing cargo line with about 350 metres long and 80% of the structure underwater. With the efforts of the Engineering Team and the Terminal and Operations Team, the Pasacao is the first terminal other than Pandacan to have a tanker receiving ethanol. With ethanol’s hydrophilic (water-loving) properties, sea water pushing is impossible.

“The installation of the pigged cargo line in Pasacao will contribute to an estimated 200,000 USD net savings annually on our ethanol logistics cost. It will also reduce frequency of deliveries via isotanks to Pasacao, thereby improving terminal efficiency and reducing HSSE exposure for our isotank logistics provider,” said Stephen Cruz, Supply Operations Team Lead.

The engineering solution to have a pigging system using nitrogen to clear the ethanol cargo line from jetty to the tanks after tanker receiving was necessitated. The Pasacao is the first Distribution Terminal in the Philippines using this method.

These bright ideas lead to new technologies, which can ease the operations of the energy industry. While energy is a vital component in people’s lives, Shell finds ways to deliver more and use it more efficiently. Exploring and securing energy sources will help in meeting the ever-increasing demand for energy and ensure energy security in the years to come. Using its expertise and technology, Shell leads in making more energy available to the world. SWP

reduce the likelihood of internal corrosion. An inert medium such as nitrogen will now be used for clearing, which will make the pipeline rest on the inert medium. This will also enable the launch of a smart pig that will assist to check the integrity of the submarine pipeline.

“With the installed pigging system in place, pipeline pigs made of hard plastic, work with the push of nitrogen gas in the pipeline. Once launched, pigs will travel horizontally in the pipeline. This innovation is helpful in clearing the main product in the pipeline, eliminating the use of sea water, which can cause internal corrosion of the cargoline,” said Shell Bacolod Terminal Manager Jeffrey Devilles.

WhEN PIGS ClEANIn Philippine facilities, the practice for clearing the cargo lines after tanker receiving in distribution terminals is by seawater pushing; this involves the line being filled with seawater. This has raised concerns on internal corrosion of the valves and lines resulting to pin holes and valve failure.

Pipelines are considered the most efficient method of transporting fluids across distances. When transmittal slows and buildups

The Gas Project has not only provided thousands of jobs for Filipino high-skilled workers, but also enhances capability to become at par with international oil and gas industry standards, powers 30% of the Philippines’ electricity needs, provides a stable supply of indigenous, cleaner-burning natural gas that reduced the country’s reliance on oil imports and has generated government revenues of PHP 24 billion (€ 4 billion) to date.

I A SPARKlING ShINE WITh DoMEXTraveling during peak seasons introduces heightened risks of acquiring diseases. Oftentimes, gas stations along major roads become the necessary stop-over points for commuters and private motorists, resulting in crowded, busy use of retail station facilities.

With more people using the facilities, maintaining cleanliness becomes more challenging. Research revealed that cleanliness in a retail site is one of the factors that create a good impression among motorists. It is what they experience when they gas up

that determines if customers would keep coming back. In fact, customers are more upset by failures that inconvenience them directly, such as dirty pumps, slippery forecourt, and dirty toilets.

To address this, Shell has partnered with Unilever through Domex for Deep Clean Week, a project to clean up Shell stations around the country, and the 1 Million Clean Toilets programme, an advocacy that aims to raise awareness on the need for proper toilet sanitation and to help improve access to clean toilets. Domex wants to empower and inspire Filipinos to clean their own toilets with

specialised cleaners in an effort to reduce the incidence of diseases that are related to lack of proper toilet sanitation.

WINNING CUSToMERS BYClEANING DEEPShell Retail Philippines staff organised themselves for a spic-and-span cleaning at various Shell service stations in celebration of Deep Clean Week, a week-long clean up activity which supports the goal of creating a positive image for Shell among motorists and encourage them to keep coming back to gas up.

Enjoying a successful run since its launch in April last year, the clean-up activities carried out at Shell stations from May 12 to 18, 2014 were made more energised by Shell’s partnership with Unilever. Making the stations sparkle by doing deep cleaning may have been tiring for the Shell staff, but it was definitely an activity made easier by using Domex, one of the superior cleaning products available in the market today.

“Deep Clean Week is about spotting areas of the station that are not part of the everyday cleaning cycle. Building on the enthusiasm from 2013, I am excited to launch this year’s Deep Clean Week. We’ve

listened to your feedback from last year and have refreshed a number of our tools to make this year’s programme even more successful and truly impactful,” said Oying Yam, Vice President for Retail.

Deep Clean Week was conceptualised to support Shell VISA (Visual Identity Standards Audit) process, an objective audit process which is designed to provide assurance that standards are being met at the Shell service stations as well as to identify non-compliance.

While the aim is to provide a pleasant experience to Shell customers each time they visit the station, VISA functions to assess three key areas in Shell service station: Cleanliness (whether the site is kept suitably clean to present a positive image to customers); Condition/Maintenance (whether the site is kept suitably maintained); Correct to Shell brand standards (assessing the correct use of Shell colors and logos).

The participation of Shell staff in the Deep Clean Week provided a different perspective in ways of delivering better service to Shell customers. Cleaning up grimes and thick grease on pavements were more than enough for the participants

to profusely sweat out, but the experience of being with colleagues doing thorough cleaning in Shell service stations is one for the books. Shell retailers were properly engaged for the updated Excellent Housekeeping Guidelines which will be their reference in maintaining cleanliness in retail sites whole year round.

The weeklong clean-up activity was made more fun and exciting with rewards for Shell staff and retailers who delivered a sparkling performance in making their assigned service station shine brighter.

WhAT IS A CENTURY To YoU? t is a hundred years that spells a difference. It is a symbol of longevity. For

Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP), 100 stand for years of symbolic existence toward helping build a nation. It is about a century of legacy that in many ways contribute to shaping a progressive society.

In 100 years, SciP has made a successful partnership with the Filipino people. In the period that the streets of Manila were lighted with gaslights, Shell has already been shipping kerosene in distinctive red tin cans and distributed among Chinese retailers to be sold to consumers.

The story of Shell in the Philippines was a result of the oil trading opportunity brought by the shortened travel of British merchants to the Far East through the Suez Canal, an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt which provides the shortest maritime route between Europe and the lands lying around the Indian and Western Pacific Oceans. This opportunity prompted British trader Marcus Samuel, who is considered the father of Royal Dutch/Shell group of companies, to begin kerosene trading in the Philippines.

For many years, Samuel has successfully traded kerosene which eventually led to

the establishment of Shell’s corporate presence in the country on January 10, 1914 through the name Asiatic Petroleum Co. (Philippine Islands) Ltd. Starting with a staff of six, it was already selling close to two million litres of motor gasoline during that period. After a few decades, Shell gained ground in the country and was already employing Filipinos as clerks and supervisors. Today, Shell in the Philippines employs around 4,000 Filipinos across the country.

A CENTURY oF FUEllING PRoGRESS What started with kerosene that fueled the streetlamps of Manila more than a century ago is now a formidable brand that continues to illuminate and power the country in more ways than one.

More than technological innovation and superior research development, Shell believes that its strength as a company lies on its people. After World War II, Shell in the Philippines has started Filipinisation of its workforce that opened opportunities for development of local leaders and harnessing talents of many outstanding Filipinos.

Shell offered a place where the best and the brightest Pinoys could learn from the expatriates. Coupled with unfolding challenges in the Philippines’ economic and political scene, life at Shell was a constant adventure. The working culture in Shell encouraged Filipino executives and staff to stay with the company for many, many years — a culture that still holds true up to this day. brightest Filipinos who not only learned from the expatriates’ experience but built on their own skills and pushed Shell into gaining new ground in the Philippines.

Another breakthrough in the Philippines for Shell was the opening of the P65-million petroleum refinery in Batangas, the largest European investment in the country during those days. It was built by some 950 construction workers, majority of them were locals. Except for American businesses which enjoyed parity rights, prohibitions in the 1935 Constitution prevented companies such as Shell to own land. This resulted in a lot of foreign investors packing up and leaving the country. Shell, however, recognised the

great possibilities of partnering with Asian enterprises and collaborated with Filipino businessmen who bought 25% of Shell’s refining company. This paved the way for the Shell Tabangao Refinery to go-on stream in 1962.

No longer merely a petroleum company, Shell continuously works to meet the increasing energy demand and supply challenges by delivering smarter products, cleaner energy and smarter infrastructure. At the same time, it promotes sustainable mobility and develops new energy sources such as cleaner-burning natural gas to address the energy challenge, while mitigating environmental impact.

In fact, its key role in the Malampaya natural gas consortium could be considered as one of its ongoing legacies in ensuring a more sustainable energy future for the country. The development of the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power project is one of the most significant industrial endeavours in Philippine history. Inaugurated in October 2001 at the onshore gas plant in Batangas, Malampaya presently provides 2,700 megawatts of electricity, accounting for about 25% of power generation in the country and can continously do so for the next decades.

is also the goal of the Shell Eco-marathon Asian leg, a worldwide quest that invites innovative engineering students to develop vehicles of the future. These vehicles will espouse fuel efficiency and new energy sources such as electricity and biofuels. Since 2010, the Philippines has been participating and shining in the Shell Eco-marathon Asian leg. Achieving 100 years is no small feat for an individual or for any organisation for that matter. It is then no surprise that such an enduring enterprise has become an inextricable part of the nation’s history. A look back on Shell’s milestones and achievements is a look back on important periods of growth in the nation as well. In the case of Shell, thanks to its keen orientation towards corporate social responsibility and social development, its achievements as an innovator in its field have contributed to nation-building.

In the area of youth development, for instance, among its most renowned and enduring programmes include the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship and the much anticipated

Shell National Students Arts Competition. The tilt, which began as a simple search for corporate calendar subjects in 1952, has been developed into a highly regarded wellspring of emerging Filipino talent in the visual arts. Counting among its winners and finalists are National Artists Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, Jose Joya, Ang Kiukok and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz. Education and scholarship opportunities are also continuously provided to the public and employee dependents through programmes such as the Gas Mo, Bukas Ko and Unlad sa Pasada; and vocational skills trainings such as Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal and Sanayan sa Kakayahang Agrikultural. In health and social investment, one of the most impactful legacy programs of Shell is the Movement Against Malaria, a nationwide programme supported by The Global Fund, the Department of Health and local government units. It is but the hope of future generations of Filipinos that businesses operate with such commitment toward inclusive

A CENTURY REVEAlEDShell coined an impressively witty theme for its centennial celebrations. “Isang Daan Tungo sa Kinabukasan” (One hundred years of helping build a nation) is an apt play on the Filipino words “isang daan” denoting both “one road” and “one hundred years.” It was an over arching theme that created a once-in-a-lifetime marketing opportunity for Shell’s campaign for its 100 years of successful business in the country.

The centennial theme captures Shell’s role in promoting nation-building in the country. To celebrate this remarkable milestone, simultaneous launches were held last January 10, 2014 in major sites of Shell all

over the country. Shell False Covers in the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), Manila Bulletin, and Philippine Star were circulated nationwide showcasing Shell’s milestones and successes throughout its 100 years in the country. The copies were also made available through Augmented Reality (AR) embedded in the false covers. In the major thoroughfares of Metro Manila and neighbouring cities and provinces, giant billboards feature Shell’s innovative projects and programmes that have made remarkable difference in the lives of the Filipino people.

pursuing best practice projects that respond to the needs of Shell worksites and host communities.

More than a grand venue for showcasing excellence, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia in Manila presented opportunities for today’s youth to realise that greatness can come from just a simple act of generosity. By Josa Marie Salazar

he true victors are those who do not fight, but instead, help others on

their way up.

True enough, the participating teams of the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014 proved that winning may be the most important part of the game, but helping others get through it could be of equal significance.

This was evident when the vehicle entry of Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) from India was held in Singapore on its way to the Philippines. Their predicament got an overwhelming response from other participating teams and host company, Shell Philippines. For the first time, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia was held in the Philippines last February 6 to 9, 2014. The super mileage competition attracted more than 100 student teams from all over Asia and the Middle East to compete in Asia’s first ever street circuit. The host country had 15 participating teams, representing nine schools from all over the country.

There were different stories of how some of the teams faced challenges such as technical and financial constraints in the

course of their preparations for Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014. Others relate how new friendships were moulded – members of the teams traverse from being mere teammates to being friends eventually. “It was more than doing something together. We are in for a common goal that really means something for each of us. I believe this is what made the camaraderie in teams prosper,” said one of the participants. Before the competition, all teams have rigorously prepared for several months. Students invested time and effort, including money from their own pockets, to design and create a car that would stand up to the challenge of smarter mobility. This is the reason why the MIT Team Eco-Warriors was shocked and dismayed when they received word that the vehicle they have put much effort to build was held in Singapore a few days before the race.

WoRTh ThE TRY“We arrived in Manila on February 4, two days before SEM Asia opened, and found out that car we have built for months was still in Singapore,” said Pratheesh Prabhu, team manager of the MIT Eco-Warriors. The vehicle would

not make it to the Philippines in time for the race and they would have to bow out of the competition. Or they could try building a new car in a couple of days.

The atmosphere was tense and the team spirit was dampened. It was a moment of frustration and uncertainty for every team member who travelled thousands of miles expecting to see their car glide on the tracks and test its fuel efficiency. Pratheesh shared that it was the biggest challenge that their team dealt with. Had it been another problem, like financial or technical, they could have sought immediate help to remedy the situation. Anyone who had to deal with test of fate seeing several months’ worth of hard work and resources going down the drain would just surrender and walk away. But the MIT Eco-Warriors was a resilient team. They knew that they had come far enough, and giving up that precious opportunity to compete was not an option.

“When we realised that our vehicle would not make it in for the competition, we turned to Shell and asked if we could still create a new vehicle in a span of two days,” said Pratheesh.

GENERoUS AND hoSPITABlE hoSTSThe Filipino brand of hospitality is known to the world for ages. That distinct quality of hospitality and generosity were shown by the Filipinos in many events in our country’s history. With that legacy of good qualities handed down through generations, it was not surprising that the Philippine team De La Salle University (DLSU) Eco-car Team naturally showed willingness to help when they heard of the MIT Eco-Warriors’ predicament from SEM’s Technical head Collin Chin. Without reservations, they lent out their old vehicle DLSU100, a Prototype battery-Electric vehicle, to MIT Eco-Warriors for them to be able compete in the category where it competed in the past year.

“While having dinner, my co-team manager, along with some teammates and I, decided to ask which category the Indian team will be competing in,” recalled Morris Papio, Manager of DLSU Eco-car Team. “When we found out that they were supposed to compete in the Prototype

Battery-Electric category, we decided to lend them our old vehicle which falls under the same category,” he added. The DLSU100 is the university’s Prototype Battery-Electric entry for the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2011 in Sepang, Malaysia. Since it is the university’s property, the team had to ask for the approval of the school’s president, Br. Ricky Laguda, FSC. Luckily, the school president approved and supported the proposal of helping the MIT Eco-warriors. After they have received the approval from the university director, the DLSU team together with the other teams, extended help to the MIT Eco-Warriors. The efforts of DLSU and other teams were further amplified with the support from Shell Philippines. Swiftly, the team overcame the obstacle and regained the confidence to take part in the competition using the old DLSU car. SUCCESS AFTER EVERY MISFoRTUNEIn a span of two days, the MIT Eco-Warriors was able to build a new prototype car. Their new car, born from the DLSU100, was ready and all set for a test

run in the first street circuit in Rizal Park, Manila. “It’s really tough to try to make a vehicle like that in a limited amount of time. I can only imagine the tension and pressure the MIT Eco-Warriors had gone through. It’s very inspiring that their team did not just give up when faced with a challenge,” said Papio. The MIT Eco-Warriors did not place in the finals but their dedication to continue their pursuit won them the “Perseverance and Spirit of the Event” Off-track award, tying with the DLSU Eco-car Team.

Their success proved that winning in the Shell Eco-marathon 2014 was not only defined by receiving track awards. Their determination to pursue their goal to compete despite their pressing dilemma was a source of inspiration for other teams who experienced less complicated difficulties.

“We are so grateful for all the support from Shell, from De La Salle University, and all the other teams from other countries who have rallied to help us. We’re happy that we still had the opportunity

to compete in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia,” said Subramanian Senthil Kumar, a member of the MIT Eco-Warriors Team.

ABoUT ShEll ECo-MARAThoNShell Eco-marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the United States as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicle. The winner of that contest barely achieved 50 mpg (21 km/l), and from

In April 2007 the Shell Eco-marathon Americas event was launched in the United States. In 2010, the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia was held in Malaysia. Malaysia hosted Shell Eco-Marathon Asia until 2013. In 2014, the event was held in Manila, Philippines, which will continue to host the event until 2016. SWP

Convention of the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network (APMEN) VI, Department of Health Secretary Enrique Ona reported that between 2005 and 2013, malaria cases and deaths declined by 83% and 92%, respectively. From 46,342 cases and 150 deaths in 2005, malaria cases were reduced to 7,720 and 12 deaths in 2013. With this record, the Philippines has achieved the Millennium Development Goal target for 2015 as early as 2008.

companies in the Philippines Country Chair Edgar Chua stressed that these achievements were a product of strong partnerships forged between the Department of Health (DOH), Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), local chief executives and local government units, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), and the thousands of community health workers and volunteers.

Since 1999, PSFI, in partnership with the Malampaya Joint Venture Partners (Shell Philippines Exploration B.V., Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corporation, and Chevron Malampaya LLC), has been involved in malaria control efforts in Palawan as part of its community engagement for the Malampaya Gas-to-Power Project, with Palawan being the site of the offshore gas platform. From the baseline data of year 1999, malaria incidence and death in Palawan decreased by 91% and 95% respectively in 2013.

In 2006, PSFI became the Principal Recipient (PR) of the Round 5 malaria grant (USD 14.3 million) of the GFATM, tagged the “Movement Against Malaria” (MAM), covering five provinces then recording the highest number of malaria cases (Palawan, Apayao, Quirino, Sulu, and Tawi-tawi). It was the first time that the GFATM

approved a corporate foundation to manage its funds.

In 2010, PSFI was named PR of the Consolidated Malaria Grant from GFATM in the Philippines (USD 31.4 million) expanding MAM coverage to a total of 40 provinces and nine chartered cities. Owing to its excellent fiduciary performance, PSFI secured Phase 2 of the grant in 2012 (USD 23.8 Million) to continue MAM implementation until 2014.

Malaria is a disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite which is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria is common in hard-to-reach areas, and infection is generally higher during the rainy season.

PhIlIPPINE GoVERNMENT, PSFI hoST ASIA PACIFIC MAlARIA ElIMINATIoN NETWoRK VINational Malaria Programme Managers and designates from the Asia Pacific region re-affirmed commitments made in 2012 in Sydney, Australia by signing The Manila Declaration which specifically declares two main goals for APMEN member countries: (1) to eliminate malaria in the Asia Pacific Region, and (2) for half the countries in the Asia Pacific region with malaria today to achieve their elimination targets by 2025.

A press conference was also held. The panel included Chua, DOH Undersecretary Dr. Enrique

Tayag, Director of the Global Health Group at the University of California, San Francisco Professor Sir Richard Feachem, APMEN Board Chair Prof. Gao Xi, Asian Development Bank Senior Social Specialist Dr. Susann Roth, World Health Organization Director of Public Health Dr. Mark Jacobs, Roll Back Malaria Partnership Senior Advisor Dr. Thomas Teuscher.

APMEN was founded in 2009 to improve regional cooperation in eliminating malaria, and to attain better international coverage of malaria issues faced by countries in the region. APMEN is composed of 15 Asia Pacific countries (Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Republic of Korea, the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vanuatu and Vietnam) that are pursuing malaria elimination, as well as leaders and experts from key multilateral and academic institutions.

The group conducted site visits to the Barangay Malaria Microscopy Center in Barangay Bahile, and the Tribal Communities residing in Barangay Tagabinet both located in Puerto Princesa City.

Delegates had the opportunity to observe a volunteer Barangay Malaria Microscopist (BMM) and health workers while at work in Barangay Bahile. BMM Rizalina Cajilo showed them around her microscopy lab located within the barangay health center. Cajilo also discussed challenges faced in establishing and maintaining a barangay malaria microscopy centre, most especially in reaching Indigenous Peoples (IP). In Palawan alone, there are about eight IP groups. APMEN guests interacted with the Tribal Communities of Barangay Tagabinet. Tribesmen were interviewed by some guests on their cultural practices and beliefs on malaria.

Quirino Governor Junie E. Cua, who has been a staunch partner of the Movement Against Malaria, shared with delegates his personal experiences in achieving the current pre-elimination status for Quirino from previously being one of five highest ranking provinces in terms of malaria incidence in 2003.Governor Cua acknowledged

the support provided to them by organizations such as PSFI, Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM), and Tropical Disease Foundation, Inc. (TDFI). He said that organisation, awareness, proper implementation, monitoring and sustaining malaria control activities are key elements in significantly reducing malaria incidence and deaths.

“The campaign against malaria was and is a long-drawn struggle. It did not, cannot, and will not happen overnight. It was a boom and boost fight, a pattern of ups and downs over time. The total elimination will not happen with each barangay or each municipality doing the programme in isolation. It has to be a total community effort. It requires every barangay and municipality to commit themselves to work, to collaborate, and to complement each other’s efforts.”

Timuru Plus 1 Palawano Team Leader Hannah Jamille Araja presented the malaria activities her organisation leads in Brooke’s Point, Palawan. With diagnosis and management of malaria among IPs being one of Timuru Plus 1 Palawano’s focus areas, Araja stressed that geographical location, constantly changing weather conditions, language barriers, inadequate manpower, and political conflicts will continue to challenge malaria elimination in Palawan. Other challenges highlighted include the lack and inadequate knowledge about health and poor health seeking behaviour. SWP

AN ACE TAlENT oN A MISSIoNGoing the extra mile to help Typhoon haiyan survivors, our Shell guy from Tabangao helped in inspiring the world to take part in helping millions of people rebuild their lives.By Jun Jay G. Jimenez

he scenery was desolate with piles of dead bodies and mountains of debris

after Mother Nature unleashed her wrath that flattened several towns and cities in Central Philippines.

When the news on the devastation brought by tropical cyclone Typhoon Haiyan roared around the world, governments have pledged assistance while millions of people readily lent a helping hand to reach out to calamity survivors. The Shell community immediately responded to the call for help. Donations in all forms poured in coming from employees, contractors and business partners. The relief operations went full blast to help thousands of victims in the affected provinces.

The “bayanihan” spirit was very much alive. We have witnessed acts of heroism. We have seen people come together for a greater cause. We have seen compassion abound among our countrymen. We may call the tragedy disheartening, but it also brought out the extraordinary in all of us. We may forever wonder about the oddity of this catastrophe, but the stories of people who walked the extra mile were inspiring. They showed all of us that no matter how harrowing a calamity was, every effort to make life better for others spells a difference. Here is the story of a Shell man whose talent gave a chance to his fellowmen regain their lives and move forward with hope and

courage for a promising life in the future. He is Arvee Fider, our Shell colleague who seized the opportunity to use his talent to help his countrymen rise from desolation.

GoING BEYoND BoRDERSIn November last year, just as the Christmas season was knocking on our doors, one of the strongest tropical cyclones recorded Haiyan swept towns and cities and turned them into rubbles. After the devastation struck, the world witnessed harrowing tales of death, chaos, and hopelessness. The survivors were scrambling for food, oblivious of the stench of decaying bodies around them. The gloomy pictures of hardship moved millions of people

around the world to help the survivors.

Majority of Filipinos, no matter their status in life, took action to help the typhoon survivors. Volunteers flocked to several relief operations organized to repack and distribute relief goods. Others manned telethons to accept pledges and donations.

Arvee, despite his busy schedule at the Tabangao Refinery as plant operator and blending supervisor, spared time to think of ways to help the survivors. Out of generosity, he did not hesitate to email American rock band No Doubt featuring singer Gwen Stefani for his plan to auction the prize he won from the competition sponsored

by the band in 2012. The “Speaker Box” logo designed by Arvee was chosen by the band to adorn their album and merchandising items.

SPECIAl TEES FoR A CAUSEBy twist of fate, Arvee’s email yielded more than what was expected. The rock band offered to produce special edition t-shirts featuring Arvee’s winning design with 100% of proceeds benefitting the Save the Children, a charity organisation which gives children around the world a healthy start by giving them the opportunity to learn and protect them from harm, especially those living in disaster-stricken areas. A generous part of the proceeds will help the children in the town and cities affected by the calamity. Save the Children estimates that over five million Filipino children have been directly affected by the tragedy.

According to the organisation, the funds that will be gathered will help in extending assistance to the children to prevent deterioration of their health and nutrition.

Arvee never thought that his initiative to auction his winning design would open a bigger opportunity to gather support from people around the world who share the same compassion for the typhoon victims. “I have seen the destruction brought by the typhoon which affected millions of my countrymen. While people from all over the world are contributing whatever they can to help the survivors, I would like to do my share in helping the victims, especially the children, in regaining dignity in their lives,” says Arvee.

Armed with a sincere motive to help the victims of tragedy, Arvee’s selfless act to sacrifice his special prize sparked a grand idea that would make people from different parts of the world to come together to support a noble cause that would save millions of lives.

GETTING To KNoWThE TAlENTWe already know that he wowed No Doubt with his exceptional talent, but it also nice to know who Arvee is. He started his journey in Shell as contracted staff in 2007 and was hired the same year as plant operator and blending supervisor, a job that he has been doing for the past seven years now.

Arvee is part of the operations team of PH Specialities, and he is responsible for loading bulk and packed bitumen, emulsion and cutback blending, and bitumen importation. He is passionate about his work and strives to excel. “I commit to be passionate in all my duties and responsibilities.” Arvee shares his inspiration to deliver excellence each day on the job. “I do my best to be a good

example to other people, the same way that I am motivated by hardworking and dedicated people. I believe that it is a mutual relationship motivating each other to reach a certain goal.”

He also excels in creating balance in his life by spending time to connect with his family and friends. To keep his mind and body well, Arvee maintains a healthy lifestyle, and pursues his passion for music and art. “On my leisure days, I indulge in listening to positive tunes and creating graphics. These are personal activities that keep me on the right track.”

He shows gratitude to God for his talent and to the special people who support him. “I dedicate everything first to God, to my lovely wife Charizza, and our cheerful son Aeus. I thank my parents and siblings for helping me become who I am right now.” Arvee continues his life’s journey guided by these positive values: “Stay True”, “Judge Not”, and “Positive Mental Attitude”. He approaches each day keeping in his mind and heart these values which motivates him to be a better person for his family and the people around him. His talent has given hope to millions. He is passionate about his work and his art. He lets God rule his life, and lives on with the inspiring words of Bob Marley, “the greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” Way to go, Arvee!
