IF YOU KNOW OF MEMBERS WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THESE METHODS PLEASE KEEP THEM INFORMED OF ANY NEW CORRESPONDENCE.

Below is a request from our Police Department.

The Team here at SA Police hopes that you found value in the information sent previously regarding home and property security. Following on, we are taking the opportunity to remind your members (and your friends and families) about some security tips to keep vehicles ‘safe and secure.’ Now that community members are spending more time at home, and using their vehicles less often, it’s the perfect opportunity to ask: 1_._ _“W_h_e_r_e_ _h_a_v_e_ _I_ _l_e_f_t_ _m_y_ _c_a_r_?_” _ 2. “H_o_w_ _c_a_n_ _I_ _r_e_d_u_c_e_ _t_h_e_ _c_h_a_n_c_e_s_ _o_f_ _h_a_v_i_n_g_ _i_t_ _s_t_o_l_e_n__o_r_ _b_r_o_k_e_n_ _i_n_t_o_?_” _

To help prevent thieves targeting your vehicle and property, I ask you to make sure you abide these security tips: o Park off the road and if possible in a locked garage.o Should you be required to park on the road, ensure your vehicle is left in a well-lit area.o Lock your vehicle doors and close all windows.o Remove all valuables from your vehicles.o Avoid leaving your property in the glove box or centre console – this is the first place thieves look.o Record the make, model and serial number of electronic equipment such as GPS devices.o Don’t leave your keys on the kitchen bench or where they can be easily seen by thieves. Keep them in a safeplace out of view.o Do not hide a spare set of spare keys on or in your vehicle.

From the Editor Once again we are all still unable to carry on with our normal life and activities, but if you are like me, there are many things being done around the house and with the vehicles that maybe would not have been done had it not been for the enforced reduction in activities. Certainly we are much better off than those in many other countries, and in fact in other states of the country as well. As per last magazine there are no activities to report on, but again I thank those who have put forward a profile of their life with vehicles. I would still like to receive more to ensure interesting reading for our members. Keep an eye also on our Facebook page, if you are able, to keep up with what some of our members are doing. You could also post activities that you are up to as well. I trust you enjoy the articles from our members in this edition.

President’s Report Hello again members. How's everyone going with all this "Lockdown" ?. From my place ,nothing has changed as we have been putting our cereal crop in after beautiful Anzac days rains. I have been social isolating in the cab of the spray rig and only see 3 people and my dog every day. At least now there are restrictions coming off and there is "movement at the station" as Banjo would say. I know there are some that have had to do the 14 day stay at home thing and I am told that there have been plenty of house jobs been or being done. Unfortunately for Desiree, there has been nothing happening around our house but that might change next week, after the crop is in the ground. While I have been on the tractor, I have found some very interesting Facebook sites with all types of interests. Brenton Sando asked me to join a site of British cars and I noticed that his MGY was posted recently. There is a site for very rare American cars. Some concept cars, but mainly beautifully restored cars that are now timeless and might I say priceless. Locally there are Holden ,Ford, Valiant and others have their own sites. It's worth a look. I have even found that the marketplace has been a good place to look for spare parts. I have listed a Facebook page for our club. Go to groups and type RVCCC. Not many have joined as yet but I am sure this will be another method of keeping in touch. I am planning on meeting with our club executive to discuss ways to get the club moving again and I think that we might organise a Sunday picnic day and drive ASAP. Watch this space. It looks certain that as from June 1 the bikes will be able to start their monthly afternoon ride and I am hopeful that we can organise club events after that date. I know that it has been very quiet from my end but in the next few weeks, I am sure that you will get more information as to what is happening and we can get out and about with our cars. Until next time. ENJOY THE DRIVE Warren

Profile of David Turnbull I have always been interested in cars & from a young age, used any opportunity to get my hands on one. I had just started High School when a mate & I purchased a 1926 Oakland tourer for 5.00 pounds and hid it at a family acquaintance’s place. Of course it was Peter’s when we were asked by my family, or mine if it was his. After I joined the Navy & returned on leave, I attempted to purchase an Austin 7 then owned by Mr. Art Hisgrove, for the huge price of 15.00 pounds, but my father steadfastly refused me permission to leave it at his place when I returned ‘on board’. Years passed and as my circumstances changed, I had given to me a 1952 Humber Hawk, followed by a 56 Volkswagen. I purchased a 1959 Sunbeam Alpine and a 1956 FJ. all as extras to my daily ride. I finally became serious about collecting cars in approximately 1978 when a friend talked me into buying a 1926 Superior K Chev. that needed restoration. Over the next couple of years, I toiled away with this task, but was talked into purchasing another Chev, this time a 1928 National from a chap near Mt. Gambier. It was in original condition & the decision was whether to restore it or leave it as it was. The latter was the decision & it was completed just before the Riverland Rally of 1984. Alas, as I was preparing it on the Saturday morning a hole appeared in the side of the block from the water jacket. ‘Heck’ I said and promptly put it back in the shed. The next week Ian Forbes fixed the leak for me & I have had no trouble with the vehicle since. I purchased a 1925 Chev tourer to have a cluster, as you would. Between a mate of mine & I we had Chev’s spanning 1924 to 1930. I sold the 25 & 26 not long after that. My interest continued & in 1984 I purchased a 1959 FE Holden Ute in excellent original condition, that belonged to a commercial Fisherman. After a coat of paint, I still have & use this vehicle. 1986 was a 1959 Mk.2 Zephyr, 89 a 1937 Pontiac sedan. 2000 was a better year as I acquired a 1970 HT Holden Ute with under 100K miles, a 1984 HT XJS Jaguar and a 1930 Chev Roadster with all the mechanical restoration complete. In 2001 I bought a TR7 Triumph sports with a rotory motor for the drive chain, not your normal sedate English power plant. This car did not remain with me for long as it attracted a bit too much attention from the constabulary & didn’t fit with the true ‘vintage’ theme. Just to annoy my wife, I bought her a 1937 Chev 30 cwt. truck so she could do her shopping, how ever her sense of humour seemed to leave her & I reluctantly parted with this treasure as well. 2004 the collection increased and we bought a 1955 Ford Prefect, being the first car Celine had owned and drove to Andamooka to teach at their school. I have always had a hankering for a Volkswagen after the 56’ model I had many years previously a mate informed me of a ‘great deal’ on a TS Fast back he had spotted at a garage sale down the road. I visited the ‘piggy bank’ and came home with the car, much to ‘she who must be obeyed’s’ disgust. I proceeded to paint this vehicle in every body’s favourite colour, black. I had problems with this car catching fire. Twice it happened & it did not give me great confidence in it after that. 2010 saw the 1949 Singer 49A on the scene and an engine rebuild, complete repaint and new vinyl roof preceded it’s entrance to the Club. Will still give Chris’s MG a run for it’s money! In 2011 I bought the 54 Armstrong Siddeley this being a great car for longer distance rally’s and a really nice car to drive at reasonable speed. A new truck joined the fleet in the guise of a AA160 International. This restoration recommenced after a long hiatus and continues today.

David Turnbull Cont.

The Volkswagon fastback Ferguson TE 20

I have owned & restored several tractors, the first being a Fordson Dexta 3 cylinder diesel A BT250 and 574 International, an E27N Fordson petro/kero and finally a TE 20 Ferguson grey. The excuse for this purchase was it would be for my Grandson, after all every boy needs a tractor. I really only need a MF 35 to complete the circle, for my Granddaughter of course. I decided that this should possibly be the last restoration as I do not move as nimbly as I once did and the crawling on floors & dirt drive ways was a little more difficult than it once use to be, but I was tempted from my slumber by Richard Stewart who had a 1972 Buick Riviera Boat Tail, which had my name on it, so back to the grind. This vehicle has recently been repainted & tidied up, nearly complete and was taken on it’s first official run for the Renmark Rocks On and it ran like a Buick!

Buick Riviera Armstrong Siddeley

Once the 59 Inter is complete, I think the only one left to complete, will be the Morris 1000 2 door my son was supposed to have assisted me with to complete for his daughter’s 16th. Birthday next year. I think I will catch the Corona Virus before that happens. David Turnbull Letter of Appreciation

Just a note to say thank you so much to Dean and Jan Pedler for all their patience and help. I hope they enjoy some quiet times together Sorry I missed their final Meeting. Lyall is now on the waiting list for a heart transplant. The other cancer is being controlled at the moment.

I so enjoy the magazine WELL DONE Val Pearce

Gordon Harvey profile Born in Loxton 1952 (twin to Murray) with 2 elder brothers and later a sister where Dad worked on a farm near the Noora water tower about 10miles east of Loxton. During our schooling days us boys did harrowing for 2 shillings/hour driving old Case and Massey Harris tractors. Brother Ron having a mechanical interest at an early age was first to drive Dad’s late 40s Chev ute and soon after with Dad’s help built a dune buggy out of a wrecked Austin A70 in which we all gained driving skills and then obtained our licences in the family car, a late 40’s Chev. After leaving school Murray and I gained employment at Loxton Research Centre as block hands. Needing transport via Dad’s mate we bought an FJ Holden that had been converted to 13inch wheels. About a year later we moved on to an 850 Mini, found for us by Ron who was doing his apprenticeship at Renton’s. Sharing a vehicle made life interesting with one wanting worker dances and the other a drive-in, so alternate weekends you had the choice. Having a ‘third wheel’ made it difficult to chat up girls so I went and got an FC Holden for $100, and spare parts for $20, and Ron made it into an OK runner. The family moved onto a fruit block that Dad worked on in Loxton and when seeing a girl near Chaffey oval put the FC sideways into a Stobey pole due to a sharp bend corner sign being knocked over. To my good luck the FC had seat belts fitted, and being a novelty I had them on and that saved me from injury. The car was then replaced with an FE Holden, and soon after a more stylish FB Holden. I married that girl and 2 good kids. When the grey motor had become a bit tired we fitted a red 149 motor with Ron’s help. Due to school runs, work and weekend jobs a second vehicle was needed, and an XP Falcon ute was bought, soon fitted with second hand wide chromies, 2” exhaust with 15” long Hot Dog muffler, and thanks to mates a cheap paint job. It looked a real goer – mainly due to the noise ! The family car was upgraded to a Toyota Corona (a non toilet paper hording, social distancing model). Marriage failed and many years later met second wife Jan who owned a nice XD Falcon Wagon, and with plenty of weekend work that we both did, upgraded the ute to an HT Holden. My 2 step kids enjoyed river mud sideways driving in it when we winter camped at what is now Westbrook’s sandbar. Had the opportunity to upgrade the ute to a Toyota Hilux tray top and changed jobs after 24 years. By then I had become a technical officer, mainly doing the manual and data collection in irrigation assisting a research officer. The job had changed to computer recording and I struggled with it. I left and found employment at New Residence on a 60acre fruit property, and we traded to a Magna wagon. Seeing John Manual, Stan Menz and Ray Jones (with families) enjoying their classics I obtained a FX Holden. John invited me to a car club meeting and I learnt that it was a 48-215. It had 13” mags and a 161 motor, and I planned to change it back, but due to work weekend jobs didn’t find the time. Next was a VP Valiant wagon and later a VT Commodore. I picked up a damaged Toyota Celica, and again Ron to the rescue, fitted the 2litre and 5 speed to the Hi Lux, and changed the 2 barrel carby to a grey Holden one for better economy. After 10 years Lames Altmann appointed me block manager and part of the package was a Ford Courier ute. I’d do garage sales when not working, mainly to buy older diecast and tin toys, as we didn’t have much as kids apart from old prams that Ron converted into billy carts.

Gordon Harvey cont. Soon after retiring almost 3 years ago a neighbour’s mate got a Holden ute pedal car (good to have contacts) for $850 – more than the Kingswood. They were made by General Motors approximately 1 year before WW2 stopped production before the 48-215 release. Two years ago I borrowed a friends partly renovated caravan, secured the pedal car to it and displayed them with other enthusiasts at Ludderhan. Good to meet fellow collectors, make contacts for future projects, gain restoration tips and who makes repro. parts, and like our own car club, good friendship. Also displayed were trikes, scooters, Hercules and other child ride-on toys. In 2019 I displayed some of my pedal cars and other old toys at the Loxton Historical Village, combined with the Chevrolet National Rally. Was going to do the same for the Morris Register Rally this Easter but COVID-19 stuffed that up. In March this year with caravan renovated we took 10 pedal cars to Wagga Wagga for an annual display with them well packed up under the ute canopy.

Gordon’s EH Holden Gordon’s HT Holden Almost a year ago I obtained a nice restored EH Holden from Pinnaroo out of the Tom Quince stable. March this year I had Blue’s Crash fix a dent I put in the Kingswood and give the EH a total fish oil treatment for double protection of a good classic, and had a set of after market when spats painted. I used some of the $ handed out thanks to the COVID-19 stimulus package, with a good job done at an OK price. Thanks Blue.

Historic Motorcycles I guess most of us have been out on the bikes a few times over the past few weeks as that is something that can be done in isolation, or with one other person. All group rides have been cancelled up till now, but with restrictions eased I think we can plan on the June ride being ok, as long as we remember social distancing, so suit up and be at the Berri Senior Citizens Hall car park on Sunday June 4th if the weather is nice to us. Peter Ebert profile My very first means of transport was a 1966 650cc BSA Gold Flash won by tender from the SA Police for $350. I had just turned 18 and the bike had to be picked up from the Thebarton Police Barracks. After doing all the paperwork and some friendly talk the officer must have thought I looked a little green and offered to escort me to Gepps Cross. A nice gesture as Adelaide was unknown to me at the time. The bike itself looked very smart, black with lots of chrome, but reliability caused me to look at a new Honda 450, which I purchased from Jordan’s Sports Centre in Renmark for $927 in 1971. I have since continued to have a motorcycle, being a road or a trail bike, the present being a BMW K75RT. Plenty of comfort but not so good when needing to get to the motor. (Because of the fairing. – ed.) My first car I bought new in 1970. A Hillman Hunter Royal bought from Lyon’s Motors in Berri, and then a Datsun 120 from Growers Services, followed by a Toyota Celica from Sam Loxton. This was dressed up a little and was the nicest looking car I’ve owned. Married life and family put an end to new vehicles and 2 door cars. After the Celica came my first and only 6 cylinder and automatic, being an XB Falcon. I did consider buying a caravan, but before I bought one I hired a caravan and headed off for Broken Hill with a headwind. It took the next 40 years to convince me that caravans were a good idea ! Toyota utes and cars have served me well since the XB. In 1997 I found and purchased a 1927 Chev. Capital and joined the Club (RVCCC) in 1998. Other than a stuck valve, the contact breaking off the rotor button and a welsh plug giving out, the car has not missed a beat. Luckily Lyons motors had a new rotor button, and removing the floor boards made replacing the welsh plug easy. I now have a 1964 Consul Cortina and an FJ Holden in my shed, and am about to roll out the FJ hoping that without too much trouble will see it on the road. My most admired car is a Ford Customline, black with non standard exhaust. Peter Ebert THE CORONA VIRUS (from its point of view!) I started in a market-place dirty and unclean Just about the saddest place I had ever seen they ate bats , rats, cats and other things obscene no wonder I escaped and with me took my team for what was happening there was more than I could bear we travelled o’er the world our infection keen to share by plane and boat by car and bike we spread out everywhere scared people in Burnie ,Sydney and from Rome to Delaware throughout the world people feared our dreaded call why not even Trumpie could stop us with his wall we changed lives by thousands everywhere we went with toilet paper scarce and a solution still unsent the birth rate set to soar and divorces over rent seven dwarfs now six when” Sneezy” had to blow only wary gazes - no “Ho,ho and off to work we go”! but spare me a thought as you loudly vent your spleen because may God forgive me, I was just nineteen!
