Foreword

The writer has a Tolle [or Tolley?] line through Sarah Tolle who married AlexanderHosick in Greenbrier Co., VA, in 1778. She is believed to be related to the John Tolley whocame to Livingston Co., KY about 1795.

For this and other reasons data has been accumulated on these Tolley families. Possiblythis accumulation will help answer some of the questions concerning origin of the these earlyTolley families of Livingston Co., KY.

See Hosick (Hosack) Families, December 31, 1971, by Eugene E. Trimble.1

Who is the “tillory, Jno., shown in the Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States taken in2

the year 1790, Greenbrier County, Va., page 110. Greenbrier County was taken from 1783-86 tax lists. What was

the correct spelling of this name - deed records might give the answer. Alexander Hosick (Hosiah) is shown in this

tax list.

Tolley Familyof Virginia, Fayette County, and

Livingston County, Kentucky

Sarah Tolle married in Greenbrier County, VA, Feb. 10, 1778, Alexander Hosick. She is1

possibly related to the John Tollett who received on Oct. 10, 1782, a grant of 69 acres on BackCreek, a Branch of New River in Montgomery Co., VA. Greenbrier Co., VA, was formed in1778 from Montgomery Co., VA. Montgomery County was formed 1776-77 from Fincastle,Botetourt and Pulaski Counties, VA. John Tollet is listed as a taxpayer of Montgomery Co., VA,1782-87. John Tollett probably went to Kentucky.

John Tolly, from Virginia, born 1765-1770; died Livingston Co., KY, after April 3, 1832, is shown as a taxpayer of Fayette Co., KY, in 1790 and as a taxpayer of Livingston Co., KY, in1800 and thereafter. John Tolly of Livingston Co., KY, married Mary "Polly" Conrad (born1776 or 1777) daughter of George Conrad) who was from Virginia, and was in and aroundBoonesboro, Kentucky, in 1790. The Alexander Hosick family moved from Greenbrier [nowWest Virginia] Co., VA, to Madison Co., KY, and from there to Livingston Co., KY; both ofthese moves being slightly later than John Tolly's move from Virginia, to Fayette Co., KY, andfrom there to Livingston Co., KY. Because both the Hosicks and Tollys or Tolleys settled atwhat became Lola in Livingston Co., it is believed that these two families are connected bymarriage of Alexander Hosick and Sarah Tolle (Tolley?). There is an extensive group of familiesnamed Tolle, however Sarah Tolle has not been identified as belonging to any of its members. 2

Thoren Tolle Meyers [see Tolle at www.\GenForum.com] is the authority on the Tolle (tole)surname. She says the name is pronounced Toll.

John Tolly, born 1765-1770, from Virginia, married Mary "Polly" Conrad (born Virginia,1776-77) and settled in what is now Livingston Co., KY, in 1796 and had a son James M. Tolley(born 1801, died Livingston Co., KY, 1850). John Tolly, born 1765-70 is shown on page 104 ofthe 1830 census of Livingston Co., KY. He settled at Lola, Livingston County in theneighborhood with the Hosicks.

There is a slight possibility that the "tillory, Jno., shown in the Heads of Families at theFirst Census of the United States taken in the year 1790, Greenbrier Co., Va., page 110

2

(Greenbrier County was taken from 1783-86 tax lists) was the brother or father of Sarah Tolle(Tolley?) who married Feb. 10, 1778, Alexander Hosick in Greenbrier Co., VA (now WestVirginia). Alexander Hosick (Hosiah) is shown in the above "census".

Nothing definite is known concerning the antecedents of Sarah Tolle wife of AlexanderHosick. Virginia Tax Payers 1782-87 Other than those Published by the United States CensusBureau, by Augusta B. Fothergill and John Mark Naule, 1940, pages 126-127, lists George Tollein Fauquier County; Jonathan Tolle in Loudoun County; Sarah Tolle in Fauquier County;Stephen Tolle in Loudoun County; John Tollet in Montgomery County; and Christian Tolley inRockbridge County.

Several references to Tolle, Tollet, Tolley, and Toley appear in Virginia Genealogist, by JohnFrederick Dorman (F221.V795):

Volume 7, page 171: Bedford Co., Virginia Tax List - Christopher Tolley is listed as onewhite male over 21 and one horse; Thomas Tolley is listed as one white male over 21.

Volume 15, pages 66, 67, to 70: John Tollet produced a commission at a meeting of thecourt on Oct. 7, 1800 from the Governor of Virginia appointing him a Justice of the Peace forTazewell County. In Tazewell Co., Va., Order Book Justice of the Peace, John Tollet is shownas present on Dec. 2, 1800. On this same day "John Tollet and wife Peggy sold land to WilliamShannon." John Tollet was still in the county in February, 1801.

Volume 18, page 308: Rockbridge Co., Virginia Tithables - Christan Toley is shown onTithable List for 1778-1779 as one white male over 21. Volume 19, page 58: RockbridgeCounty, Virginia Tithables - Christian Tolley was a Tythable in Captain John Gilmore'sCompany, May 28, 1779.

Volume 20, page 256: Fauquier Co., Virginia Tax List - George Tolle (George andStephen Tolle) is listed as three white males over 21, six horses and one black person; RogerTolle (William Tolle) is listed as two white males over 21, and two horses.

In Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800, by Lewis Preston Summers, 1929; page 899,Montgomery Co., Virginia, is shown: "1782, Oct. 10, Tollett, John; grantee; 69 acres Back Creek, Branch New River."

Angela Ruley (Mrs. Gary Ruley), 87 Talley Ho Lane, Natural Bridge, VA 24578, in 1999published a 447 page history with index and around 4,000 footnotes, titled: Blue RidgeMountaineers, The Tolley Family of Rockbridge County, Virginia including those who migratedto Bedford, Botetourt, Alleghany, Augusta and Beyond.

Co., VA militia rolls in 1753. She says he is mentioned again on the muster roll for AugustaCounty in 1767.

Frank H. Ford, <[email protected]> wrote on May 6, 1999: “An Elkaney Tolley, age 97,farmer, born Virginia, is listed in the household of Hartwell Newsom, wife Sarah in the 1850census for Pike Co., KY. Hartwell married second, Sarah Tolley March 13, 1831 in Pike Co.,KY. They are my ggg-grandparents. A Daniel Tolley divorced Ollie Tolley in the early 1830's inPike Co., KY and a Rachial Tolley married William Brown there on Oct. 6, 1834. An obituaryfor Elkanah Tolley gives his parents as Daniel and Sarah Tolley. I think Elkanah is on the 1837tax list for Floyd Co., KY but the name is spelled wrong. I don’t have the record but a DanielTolley and a William Tolley are on a roster of George Rogers Clark’s men. I think there is apension or bounty land application for William Tolley from Mercer Co., KY.”

1. John Tolley; born in Virginia, 1765-1770; died in Livingston Co., KY, after April 3, 1832;Jno. Tolly shown as a taxpayer of Fayette Co., KY on Feb. 26, 1790; John Tolly shown as ataxpayer of Livingston Co., KY, in 1800; John Tolley (11010-0001002) enumerated in the 1810census of Livingston Co., page 27; John Tolly (001110-0001001) enumerated in the 1820 censusof Livingston Co., page 72; John Tolley (2 males 0-5, 1 male 20-30; 1 male 60-70; a female5-10, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 50-60) enumerated in the 1830 census of Livingston Co., page104; deceased prior to 1840; in 1885 his grandson John N. Tolley said, "As the number of settlersin northern Kentucky increased, John Tolley penetrated farther into the savage country, andchanced to pass through that part of Livingston County now known as Carrsville Precinct, asearly as 1792 or 1793; he determined to and did secure a location, choosing the tract of land nowoccupied by me, John N. Tolley." John Tolley married Mary "Polly" Conrad (bornRockingham Co., VA, 1776 or 1777 [age of 73 given in 1850 census of Livingston Co.]; diedLivingston Co., KY, March 14, 1854 "aged 75 years" of palsy and old age; daughter of Georgeand Catherine Conrad; resided on the Golconda Road, Livingston Co., KY). Children of JohnTolley as shown in above census records, and in will of son James M. Tolley, whose will is datedApril 22, 1850 and produced in court June 3, 1850, and recorded Feb. 12, 1856: (James M.Tolley was deceased when the 1850 census was taken (family 668); also see biographical sketchof John N. Tolley (grandson of John Tolley) who was born Feb. 9, 1830. 3

2. John; born 1794-1800; living 1810 and 1820; not shown in 1830 census; shown as a taxpayer (John Tally, Jr.) of Livingston Co., KY, 1819; probably left no heirs. + 3. James M.; born 1801; died April 22 - June 3, 1850.

John Tolley and Jas. M. Tolley witnessed in Livingston Co., KY, the following marriage:

“Bridges, Jesse (X) - Elizabeth Tolly. Bond: 3 Apr 1832, Bondsman: James M.Tolley. Register: License issued 3 Apr 1832. No return recorded [MR#1:46]. Consent:

3 Apr 1832. "I James Tolley doo sertify that I wish lisons to bee granted for JesseyBriges and my Daughter Elizabeth without my presence and obliged me." Signed Jas.Tolley. Wit: John Tolley & Jas. M. Tolley.”4

From this marriage it is possible that John Tolley had a brother James Tolley (father ofthe above Elizabeth (Tolley) Bridges. The bondsman James M. Tolley was a son of John Tolley.

George Conrad was shown as a taxpayer of Shelby Co., KY on Aug. 25, 1800; also as ataxpayer of Bourbon and Jefferson Counties, KY in 1800.

Daniel Tolley was a member of Capt. John Williams Company of Infantry stationed atKaskaskia under Command of Colo. Geo. Rogers Clark from July 12, 1778 through May 31,1779 (323 days); John Tolley listed in same Company on Sept. 8, 1778 through April 1, 1779(205 days).5

John Tolley was a member of Capt. John Allison’s Company under command of Colo.John Bowman from Feb. 26, 1780 until March 9, 1780 (days on duty, 19 [sic.]) when he waskilled. This was Birds Raid, Destruction of Ruddle's and Martin's Stations and ShawneeExpedition.

John Tolley was a member of Capt. Henery Prathers Company of Militia who marchedfrom Kentucky County on an Expedition against the Shawnee Indians on 2nd July 1780 underCommand of Col. George Rogers Clark from July 8th, 1780 through Aug. 21, 1780 (45 days onduty). There is a notation opposite his name "kild" which is an abbreviation for "killed." William Tolly entered in same Company of July 8, 1780 and was discharged August 21, 1780(15 days on duty). The above, if accurate, means that two John Tolleys were killed in the Indianfighting in Kentucky.

John Tolly of Livingston Co., KY could have been the son of either one of the above JohnTolleys (assuming there were two). John N. Tolley of Livingston Co. said his ancestor, JohnTolley, Sr., came to Kentucky when there was only one or two permanent settlements, etc. SinceJohn Tolley of Livingston County was born 1765-70, it is certainly not he but his father that JohnN. Tolley was alluding to in 1885.

John Tolley is shown (0002) on 1817 Livingston County, Kentucky Tax List with 200

Tolley Families of Virginia

Mr. Tolley of William E. Tolley, Inc., 821 15th Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. 20005,in 1983 in response to an inquiry on the history of the Tolley family, gave reference to an accountof the Tolley family which appeared in the Bicentennial Issue of the Buena Vista News of BuenaVista, VA (Thomas Barnes, Publisher). Mr. Tolley said that this account indicated that themembers of this Tolley family came to Virginia from New York, and that several members of thefamily are currently in and around Buena Vista in Rockbridge Co., VA, on the east side of theInterstate Highway.

A copy of this was found at the: Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia State Library andArchives, 11th Street at Capitol Square, Richmond, VA 23219-3491

"The Tolley Family Among First To Settle In County, Eight Generations Of Family Represented In

Rockbridge; Written by Chas. D. Tolley

The Tolley's were among the first settlers in Rockbridge County. They were of English descent although

some at the present day trace their ancestry to the Scotch-Irish settlers of Early America. The Tolley family

originated in Warwickshire England and migrated later to the Electorate of Hanover, from whence they came to

America in the early Eighteenth century. Dr. John F. Tolle (Tolley) came to New York, and in 1753 married a Miss

Burhaus, the daughter of a Dutch merchant. Dr. Tolley was the first to write the name adding the "Y". Two of his

nephews Daniel Tolley and John Tolley were privates in a group of non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the

Illinois Regiment and Western Army under the command of General George Rogers Clarke. Another nephew,

Dudley Tolley, a planter from Essex County, Virginia, was a member of Capt. Henry Woodward's Company during

the French and Indian Wars.

The Tolley family in Rockbridge county descended from these early settlers coming by way of Botetourt

and Bedford counties into Rockbridge county. The family is represented in Rockbridge by eight generations. They

have been engaged mainly in agricultural pursuits, although some have entered the professional fields of the

Ministry, Medicine, businesses, and teaching. Due to the migrations of the family from one part of the county to the

other, many of the precious historical records concerning the family have been lost. Some members of the family,

not realizing the value of such records, carelessly left them in the homes from which they moved. From one of the

oldest living members of the family, Mrs. Luther Tolley of Rockbridge Baths, the writer has gained much valuable

information. She possesses several beautifully written pages taken from an old family Bible which throw a great deal

of light on the history of the family since 1816. Also the records of the Rockbridge County's Clerk's office in

Lexington have been of much value in compiling this work.

Like many of the pioneer families the Tolley's have usually had large families of children. Due to this

important fact, this work has been extremely difficult and at certain points, may not be complete.

Christopher Tolley of Botetourt and Arnold's Valley in Rockbridge was born in the middle Eighteenth

century. He married Patience whose surname we do not know. A story which has been handed down by word of

mouth relates that she was the daughter of an English nobleman, and who contrary to her father's wishes decided to

24

cast her lot with the settlers who were leaving for America. She, following her lover, became a stowaway on the ship

coming to America.

As a result of a very severe storm, the company of settlers was shipwrecked and Patience was one of the few

survivors. She managed to return to England but had now lost her social prestige because her father refused to claim

her as his daughter. However this experience did not discourage her and so she determined to come to Virginia.

Here she became the wife of Christopher Tolley. To this union were born four sons, Samuel, John, Joseph, and

Christopher, Jr. John married Abigail Taylor in 1809. Samuel married and had one daughter, Phoebe who married

Pinkney Goff in 1838. Both Samuel and Christopher, Jr. are mentioned as taxpayers in 1841 from precinct number

eight which included the territory of the James River at Greenlee's Ferry up Arnold's Valley to the county line.

Joseph married a Miss Ford. Of this family John Alexander and Marion Tolley are the only children which can be

accounted for in the immediate Tolley family. Marion married Margaret Elliott and had only one son, Joseph.

Marion died after the War between the States. His son Joseph, married Miss Ella Ballard. Two daughters were born

to this union, Mrs Josephine McCurdy and Mrs. Seany Montgomery both of Rockbridge. Mrs. Joseph Tolley lives at

the present time near Collierstown.

John Alexander Tolley married _____ . There were ten children, James Preston, Alexander, Andrew,

Franklin, Pawhattan, Caroline Matilda, Harriet, Martha Amanda, Sarah Frances, and Mary V. Tolley. Caroline

married James Crist; Martha married James H. Conner; Sarah married William Conner; Mary V. married Joseph

Minger; Harriet married twice, first a cousin Andrew Tolley and second Andrew Vest. Alexander married Sally

Wood of Pocohontas, West Virginia and reared a family of nine children. Their progeny constitute the Tolley family

of West Virginia.

Andrew was married twice. His first wife was Martha Plott, his second, Sarah Rowsey. By his two

marriages he had eleven children: James Gardner, Mrs. Frances Self, Luther Alexander, Alfred, Mrs. Lucy Sheckle,

Mrs. Mary Sensabaugh, Mrs. Emma Tillman, Mrs. Ella Sensabaugh, Mrs. Mattie Little, Mrs. Nannie Miller, Stuart

and Ruffner Tolley.

These and their descendants possess homes in Rockbridge and various points in the United States.

James Preston Tolley who was born in 1816 on the James river, married in 1839, Mary Martha Taylor, a

kinswoman of Bishop William Taylor of the Methodist Episcopal church south. To this union were born eleven

children. Two died in infancy and two in early maturity. The remaining seven included Joseph Franklin, James

Davidson, William Marshall, Larkin Taylor, John Alexander, Mrs. Henrietta Ford, and Mrs. Mary Agnes Tolley.

The oldest son Charles William died of pneumonia, September 18 1861. He was a member of Captain J. D.

Morrison's company "G" 58th Virginia Infantry during the War between the States.

Joseph Franklin Tolley married Elizabeth Shaner. They had the following children: Miss Sue Tolley, Mrs.

J. H. Hill, Miss Lou Tolley, George P. Tolley, David R. Tolley, Benton C. Tolley, Mrs. Dan Tolley and F. Graham

Tolley.

James D. Tolley married Savilla Ford. They had the following children: Roscoe C. Tolley, Mrs. Bessie

Fix, and Dan I. Tolley.

William M. Tolley married Virginia McKeever whose children were Granville Tolley, Howard M. Tolley

and Mrs. Ada Peery.

Larkin Taylor Tolley married Virginia Mohler. They had the following children: Mrs. Mary Ann Conner,

Oliver M. Tolley, Mrs. Blanche Elliott, Mrs. Cora Troxell, Mrs. Stella Mohler, Mrs. Gertrude Mohler, Mrs. Myrtle

Pleasants and Walter B. Tolley.

25

John Alexander Tolley married twice. First he married Lucy Connor. Their children were Mrs. Lucy

Conner and H. Baxter Tolley. His second wife was Virginia Womeldorf. They had the following children: Mrs.

Cora Furr, Archie M. Tolley, Miss Mary Tolley, Mrs. Agnes Chapman, Dr. Emery W. Tolley, Mrs. Edna Woodson,

Mrs. Roberta Dull, Mrs. Nellie Stirewalt, Mrs. Bettie Van Hyning, Dr. John A. Tolley, Jr., and Mrs. Bessie Whaley.

Mrs. Henrietta Ford was the wife of James Ford. They had the following children: William Ford, Herbert

Ford, Mrs. Mary Vest, Mrs. Callie Cunningham, Mrs. Pearl Snider, and Mrs. Lillian Muterspaw.

Mrs. Agnes Tolley was the wife of Luther A. Tolley. Their only daughter is Mrs. Nettie Bare. Mrs. Tolley

is the only member of her father's family still living.

The foregoing is not a complete genealogy of the family because the writer has been unable to contact every

branch of the family, but he sincerely hopes that he may complete this work in the future."
