Enterprise NewsEnterprise helps Sailors through tax season

USS ENTERPRISE, At sea - As the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) steams through the Mediterranean Sea Feb. 3, port visits and flight operations are not the only things on the ship’s horizon; tax time is also quickly approaching. Filing taxes correctly and keeping track of personal finances benefits Sailors and their careers. Once Sailors start struggling with debt and money problems, they can be easily distracted from the mission and can even lose the necessary clearances which they need to do their jobs. Although most crew members have done their taxes before, filling out the necessary forms and paperwork can be difficult while on a deployment. Luckily for the Big ‘E,’ volunteer income tax assistants (VITA) are aboard, ready to answer questions and provide vital help to whoever requests their assistance. VITA is a non-profit organization funded by the IRS to provide free tax consultation to military personnel who need it. Made up of Sailors stationed aboard Enterprise, the ship’s

very important,” said Blackmore. “Take your time when you file your taxes, and start sooner rather than later.” After the tax return is filed by a VITA volunteer, Garland said Sailors can expect to see the results in their bank accounts within 10 days. When dealing with a VITA representative, the best thing to do is to be honest and answer all of the questions they ask, said Garland. “Since the program was set up by the IRS, every question your VITA representative asks you will be important to answer honestly,” said Garland. “Don’t be dishonest when you do your taxes. Uncle Sam will catch you eventually.”

VITA program is not the only way to help Sailors file their taxes, but it is free and reputable. Chief Air-Traffic Controller (AW) Marzetta Garland, the VITA site coordinator for Enterprise, said VITA is a good program for crew members to use and one that they will not find outside the military. “I don’t like to see people get ripped off or given bad advice,” said Garland. “We provide a free service. This is just one of the ways the government is giving back to you for your service.” When filing taxes, Garland said the first step is to make sure to have the necessary paperwork. She said Sailors should be keeping a record

of things like past tax forms and receipts going back at least five years, so there is no guessing or estimating when it comes to filing. The most common mistake Sailors make is trying to do their taxes without all the necessary paperwork on hand, Garland explained. “Don’t throw away anything important,” said Garland. “That’s what helps the most.” Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Airman Jacob Blackmore, assigned to Enterprise, agreed with Garland on the importance of keeping records and added that those filing taxes online should keep conformation numbers given by websites as well. “Keeping records is
