SECOND-DAY TOUR

The second day of our journey will be dedicated to the royal family and their history. THIRD-DAY TOUROur journey has almost come to the end but we cannot miss a stop along the banks of the Thames. Not far from it is the Big Ben, a very big tower clock. Then we are visiting the Globe Theatre, that is considered the "workshop" of the most glorious Renaissance dramatist, born in Stratford Upon-Avon, William Shakespeare. In the evening, after attending the ancient ceremony of the keys, we are having dinner at a typical London pub: The Liberty Bounds, this pub is located just outside the boundary of the area, or liberty, controlled by the City of London. The pub stands close to the site of the scaffold where many prisoners from the Tower of London met their fate in the 16th and 17th century.

DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST-DAY

1) The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London, linking Bankside to the City of London. It is located between Southwark Bridge, Blackfriars and Railway Bridge. It is owned and maintained by Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust supervised by the City of London Corporation. Its construction began in 1998, and it was first opened in June, 2000.

2) The Tate Gallery hosts works by English painters from the seventeenth century to French Impressionists; it is a complex of four museums including the Tate Modern, one of the richest contemporary art museums in the world, housed in a former power plant. Scientific museums are also very famous, including the Natural History Museum, and the Madame Tussauds wax museum. The Tate Gallery is situated near the Millennium Bridge.

3) Portobello Road is a street in the Notting Hill District of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in West London. It runs almost the length of Notting Hill from South to North, roughly parallel with Ladbrove Grove. On Saturdays it is home to Portobello Road Market, one of London notable street markets, known for its second-hand clothes and antiques. The Portobello Film Festival has been held in locations around Portobello Road in August since 1996.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SECOND-DAY1) Buckingham Palace, located in the City of Westminster in London, is the official residence of the sovereign of the

United Kingdom. The expression Buckingham Palace, or simply “The Palace”, has become common to express everything that regards the environment of the Court and the royal family. In addition to being the official residence of the Queen, Buckingham Palace is the place where many public ceremonies are held (from royal receptions to visits by the various heads of state) and it is also the major tourist attraction for the world famous Change of the Guard.

2) St.James's Palace is the most senior royal palace in the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, although no longer the principal residence of the monarch, it is the ceremonial meeting place of the Accession Council and the London residence of several minor members of the royal family.

Built by King Henry VIII on the site of a leper hospital dedicated to Saint James the Less, the palace was second in importance to the Palace of Whitehall for most Tudor and Stuart monarchs. The palace increased in importance during the reigns of the Georgian monarchy.

3) The British Museum is one of the largest and most important museums in the history of the world. It was founded in 1753 by Sir Hans Sloane. The museum contains about 8 million objects that testify the history and material culture of humanity from its origins to present times. It is located in Great Russell Street, in the city of London.

DESCRIPTION OF THE THIRD-DAY1) Big Ben is the nickname of the largest bell in the clock tower of the Westminster Palace in London, better known as

the Houses of Parliament. It is situated in the West end of London. Traditionally, its name has also extended both to the clock and the whole neo-Gothic style tower, a 96 m high construction begun in 1834 and ended in 1858, known as the Clock Tower. Its name was officially changed into Elizabeth Tower, on the occasion of the Jubilee of Elizabeth II in June 2012. This bell tower rings every quarter of an hour.

2) The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, on the land owned by Thomas Brend and inherited by his son, Nicholas Brend and grandson Sir Matthew Brend. It was destroyed by a fire on 29th June, 1613. A second Globe Theatre was built on the same site in June, 1614 and closed by an Ordinance issued on 6th September, 1642. It is situated near the Bankside Gallery.

3) The Ceremony of the Keys is an ancient ritual, held every evening at the Tower of London, when the main gates are locked for the night. It is said to be the oldest military ceremony in the world, and is the best-known ceremonial tradition of the Tower. Between 40 and 50 visitors are allowed to the ceremony each night, under escort. Tickets are free but must be obtained in advance from Historic Royal Palaces, the organization that looks after the Tower. The event is usually sold out at least 12 months in advance.
