From The Headteacher...

Philip Hurst

What is your place in the world? This question was posed in my assemblies at the start of term. The question is about everyone’s wider contribution to the world in which we live. Our pupils make an incredible contribution to life at Thomas Mills and in return I believe they are able to enjoy some amazing opportunities. One such opportunity was the Expedition to Peru. Eleven Sixth Form students, accompanied by Mr Tattoo and Mrs Middleton, enjoyed three weeks exploring Peru in the summer as well as helping with a community project. It sounds an incredible, life-changing, awe-inspiring, adventure. The term has started well. We have been pleased to welcome Year Seven pupils as well as students joining the Sixth Form. We wish you a very successful time at Thomas Mills. Increasingly, families are joining us from further afield as the demographic dip of children in the Framlingham area has provided opportunities for new pupils to experience a Thomas Mills education. This looks set to continue and if you are aware of families, who would

be interested in joining us, please ask them to contact the school and I will be happy to show them what we have to offer. Finally, we were all delighted to celebrate some excellent examination results at all levels in the summer. Congratulations to all students on a great set of examination outcomes. There were more successes beneath the headline figures. At A Level, just under 50% of all grades were A*, A and B with 17 students achieving 3 Grade As. At GCSE, nearly one third of entries were awarded either Grade A* or A. Importantly, national progress measures are also very high which proves that a Thomas Mills education, combined with hard work and focus, can lead to successful outcomes and an assured place in the wider world.Philip Hurst

Peru adventure for Thomas Mills High School studentsEleven students from the Sixth Form returned in August from a three week expedition to Peru. This involved community work in the Andes Mountains and a five day trek to complete the Salcantay Trail, as well as a day at the World Heritage site of Machu Picchu, one of the greatest attractions of South America. The party spent three days acclimatising in Cusco before heading to Vilcamayo (The Sacred Valley), undertaking a week long community project with the local Quechua population. This involved helping with the erection of a solar panel for use by a local family, building dry stone walls from locally sourced rocks and painting a gate house located in the conservation area. The Salcantay Trek, considered one of the premier treks on the planet, took the group up to heights of over 4,500 metres above sea level through varied and stunning landscapes in the Andes Mountains. In addition to the personal fundraising, the whole team raised money with regular cake stalls and a spectacular ‘Taste of South America’ evening when the students planned, prepared and served a three course meal to 120 guests. Local businesses and friends kindly provided promises for an auction and items for the raffle with a total of £4000 raised to pay for transport to training events, items of group kit and the coach to and from Gatwick Airport. In addition, the group contributed £1000 to the completion of the school house at Mantanay in the Andes Mountains. The school organises an expedition to developing countries every two years and one of the leaders of the Peru trip, Jo Middleton, is already hard at work preparing the itinerary for 2017. “The Peru

expedition was a huge success. The eleven students were outstanding ambassadors and contributed to a very worthwhile community project working with local people. The trek was a demanding challenge and our day at Machu Picchu especially memorable. Above all, the students have returned with enhanced confidence, new skills and an insight into the culture of an amazing country.”

Brilliant Results for Thomas Mills at GCSEAugust provided another occasion to celebrate excellent results at GCSE for Thomas Mills High School pupils. An impressive 84% of pupils achieved 5 or more grades at A*-C with 72% of pupils achieving 5 or more A*-C grades including English and mathematics. 30% of all GCSE entries were awarded A* and A grades. There were many genuinely outstanding results for our top performing pupils: David Orrell - 15 A*grades, Isabel Brooks - 13 A* and 2 A grades, Jordan Wiseman - 10 A* and 5 A grades, Imogen Holland-Howes - 9 A*and 6 A grades, Darius Whatling - 12 A*, 3 A and 1 B grades, Amy Heather - 11 A*, 4 A and 1 B grades, Lavinia Carless - 8 A*, 5 A and 1 B grades, Freddy Legg - 8 A*and 7 A grades, Amy Ryder - 11 A*, 3 A and 1 B grades and Jeremy Bones - 10 A*, 4 A and 1 B grades. These are terrific results and clearly demonstrate that high-achieving pupils really have the opportunity to flourish at Thomas Mills High School. However, it is not just the high-flyers who were successful. Pupils from all prior ability bands achieved impressive results. The results for “disadvantaged” pupils who attended Thomas Mills were also truly exceptional.Progress measures were even more encouraging, demonstrating that, taking into account pupils’ prior attainment, pupils improve and develop far more at Thomas Mills than when compared with other schools nationally.

High quality teaching in an excellent learning environment, combined with hard-working, dedicated pupils with supportive and encouraging parents, have all contributed to these outstanding results. Parents of current pupils can not only be confident that Thomas Mills is a centre of excellence when it comes to examination results, but that their sons and daughters receive a high quality, rounded school experience that enables character development and the fulfilment of each child’s potential.

1/3rd of Year 11 pupils achieved 5 A*-A grades at GCSE 45% of Year 11 pupils achieved the English Baccalaureate Over 80% of pupils achieved a grade C or higher at GCSE in Mathematics Over 80% of pupils achieved a grade C or higher at GCSE in English 98% of pupils achieved a GCSE in a modern foreign language, 58% of these were at grade C or higher 73% of pupils achieved two Science GCSEs at A*-C “Disadvantaged” pupils actually made more progress at Thomas Mills than other pupils – bucking the national trend!

Music NewsThe end of the summer term was once again busy for the school musicians. The Samba Group, Chamber Choir, Brass Ensemble and Chamber Choir all performed at the ‘Bandstand on the Beach’ in Aldeburgh as part of the Aldeburgh Festival in June. The Samba Group, directed by Sixth Form students, made a real impact processing through the audience. Also in June, the Singers’ Concert was very well received with the whole evening being enhanced with displays of superb Art and Design Technology work from GCSE and A level students. Trainee Music teachers from Homerton College in Cambridge once again visited the school to work with a number of Year 8 students and members of the lower 6th music group provided background music for the Framingham Church Flower and Arts Festival. Multicultral DayIn June all of year 7 took part in an exciting Multicultural Day. The pupils got the chance to learn about different religions and cultures, as well thinking about appreciating the varying values and ideas that may be in a community. The students thoroughly enjoyed hearing African stories and playing the drums (as did some of the teachers), as well as looking at Hindu customs, artefacts and trying some traditional dance. At the end of all this excitement they were given the opportunity to gather their thoughts with some mediation through the Labyrinth from Norwich Cathedral and learn about Christianity throughout the world. Lower Sixth Biology students were given the opportunity to visit Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve at Carlton Marshes after their AS exams , to carry out some fieldwork to bring their A2 lessons to life. Megan Hammond explains: “We set off to put all the theory we had learnt in the past few weeks into practice by doing practical tasks. All of them were based on the ecology unit which included sampling techniques. The ones we investigated were mark-release-recapture, quadrat sampling and pond-dipping.” Ben Chadwick elaborates further about the water sampling: “We found many different species living in the two areas, such as a dragonfly nymph, water boatmen and little green pipe things that we tried to identify using a key.” The students who participated had a very busy day and benefited from the opportunity to hear from conservation experts about the work of Suffolk Wildlife Trust. For more information about their work, consult www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org

During activities week, members of year 11 and lower sixth with a passion for English Literature enjoyed a three day excursion to the delight that is Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. The name of the coach (Wilfreda Beehive) was our first hint at the experience we would have whilst away and looking back on it I can safely define that as classy, sophisticated and fun! Upon arrival in Stratford-upon-Avon we were dropped off in town, and sent off to buy lunch and stretch our legs (immediately most of the students headed for the creperie and waffle house and gorged themselves on sugary goodness), before heading off to the matinee performance of ‘The Merchant of Venice.’ We were all sceptical about the simplistic set (floor-to-ceiling gold tinged mirrors), but it was effective in allowing the audience’s focus to rest on the characters, and the director’s interpretation of the Shakespearean comedy. We all then hopped back aboard Wilfreda and headed to the ‘Honily Court Hotel,’ where we unpacked, freshened up, and ate an evening meal together before heading back into town for a ghost walk. We were greeted by a gentleman clad in gothic attire (top hat, cape and cane included) who led us on the tour. He quickly sussed us out and proceeded to make fools of most people in the group, and we spent a very enjoyable few hours in his company. After an all-you-can-eat buffet-style breakfast the next morning, Wilfreda took us to our next destination: Anne Hathaway’s cottage. The quick tour of the house was succeeded by an exploration of the amazing grounds that it sits in, allowing for many photo opportunities and a time to sit and chill out. That afternoon was spent privately exploring Stratford-Upon-Avon in little groups. Lots of people headed down to the Avon River to hire deck chairs, whilst others experienced the waffle house for their second daily dosage of sugar, and some hit the shops. An evening meal was provided for us at the hotel that evening, and then it was time to don our glad rags and head to the theatre once more, this time to watch ‘Othello.’ Reviews had heightened expectations for this, and it’s safe to say that it didn’t disappoint. The tragedy was again modernised, set in the surroundings of a war. The complex set was

amazing; there was a pool on stage that could disappear and Iago, one of the main characters, opened the play by rowing onto the stage in a boat. The speed of the set change - from the gold mirroring of the previous day to the complex temple-like structure – was awe-inspiring.A personal highlight was a rap battle that had been added in, which heightened the comedy of the scene and made for a really interesting twist. It was a fantastic and enjoyable evening to end a fantastic day. It was a very sad group of teenagers that got back on board Wilfreda for the final time the next day. We had all had such an amazing experience, and cannot thank Mrs Peers enough for her careful planning of the trip, nor Mrs Constanti and Mrs Goodwin for being great sports. I hope that it is an excursion that can become a regular thing, and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone interested in English, or Drama, or just having a brilliant time away.

Emily Goodwin, 12KJe

Suffolk Schools Sailing Regatta 2015

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Summer 2015The summer term of 2015 was a busy period for Thomas Mills High School pupils involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme. The Year 10’s who undertook their Bronze Award under the leadership of Miss Miller and her staff team completed their Practice Expedition early in the term, camping at Marsh Farm in Sternfield. Later in the term they undertook their Qualifying Expedition in the Woodbridge area, camping at the popular Tangham Campsite halfway through their trek between Snape and Bawdsey. Mrs Middleton’s Silver Award group, consisting of both Year 11 and Year 12 pupils, completed their Qualifying Expedition in the idyllic yet at times difficult landscape of The Chilterns in Buckinghamshire. These surroundings gave the pupils a different kind of challenge from that posed by the Suffolk countryside – mainly in that it was very hilly! All the pupils who took part impressed us with their skills and knowledge as much as their determination to succeed and their attitude towards each other when under pressure. The majority of these pupils have completed the other areas of their award, and we look forward to celebrating their success at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Evening in October. We look forward once again to a successful year running the

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme and remain ever grateful for all the staff who give up their time to support the scheme.

The annual Suffolk Schools Sailing Regatta was held at Alton Water Sports Centre in Holbrook on Thursday 25th June. There was a great turnout, with well over 100 entries from 13 different schools. It was a fantastic sight to see so many boats out on the water. We had a total of 9 pupils from Years 7-10 taking part this year. The wind was very light in the morning, but it did pick up in the afternoon and four races were eventually completed in the main regatta fleet. Seven of our pupils (Michael Donovan, Jonathan Mason-Gordon, Charlotte Wood, Lily Darrell, Robin Hutchinson, Nicole Humphrey, and Sam Morris) competed in the ‘Onboard Regatta’, which is designed for more novice sailors. The light winds in the morning gave them an opportunity to gain confidence in the boat and to play some games on the water. With the wind picking up in the afternoon, there was time to see how exciting sailing can be. In fact, it inspired two of our pupils to go out and buy a boat of their own so they can continue to enjoy the sport. Two pupils competed in the main fleet regatta in the slow handicap fleet and managed to secure 3rd place (our best result to date). Congratulations to Katie Spark (helm)

and Annie Smith (crew).Thank you to Mr Halls who accompanied me, helped supervise the team in the morning and get the boats ready, before dashing back to school to teach! A great day – looking forward to next year’s regatta already!

Thomas Mills High School hosted two enrichment days in the summer term, titled “Escape from the Moon,” in which Year 5 pupils from local primary schools attended a day of creative workshops and activities. They attended sessions in DT, PE and Science, working in small teams with their “mission brief” being to rescue their class which had crash-landed on the Moon. Pupils constructed space rocket prototypes with Mr Thompson in DT, experimented

with “Moon Acid” and propulsion systems with Miss Crisp and her team in Science, and undertook a range of team-building challenges with Mr Bubb in PE. Pupils, parents and teachers alike all had a really enjoyable time and we hope to see some familiar faces returning to Thomas Mills for future events.

Year 11 PromAsk anyone and they will tell you that the Prom wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. I’m not an extrovert as such and so the environment wasn’t ideal; but I’m so glad that I went and that I got the chance to celebrate and also say goodbye to my friends. Our Prom was at the grand Trinity Park, which was decorated so beautifully, and the slideshow of our Year 7 pictures was…interesting to say the least. I very much enjoyed our meal – which was a common theme amongst my table and I feel that everyone benefited from the free Wi-Fi. Mr Harvey’s speech was filled with emotion and I would like to say a huge thank you for

arranging it all! (I am not being forced to say this). We were lucky enough to have Francesca Clarke, Millie Green and Katie Page perform for us and it really brought us all together with everyone standing up and clapping along. Once the music hawwd started I scarpered and spent most of my time hiding behind a column with Amy Heather (and Lottie Butcher for a short while) – which was fine because we danced there instead – but once Mr Bubb had caught wind of this he soon got our friends to retrieve us to the dance floor, the packed dance floor. All in all the night was very enjoyable. Emotions were running high as most

people were saying goodbye to friends, but I would never change my experience for the world – and highly recommend that when you get the chance to go to your Prom, you take it.

Over 329 fixtures have been played with many wins and many top three placings in tournaments over the course of last year. Over the summer term the U15 Boys Cricket team made it through to the County Finals and won, becoming County Champions; the U14 Boys Cricket team also made it through to the County Finals, but sadly could not play due to Activities Week. The U12 Rounders team were undefeated all season. Thomas Mills High School also hosted 4 rounders tournaments on the same night where the U13 girls won, U13 boys won, U12 girls came 2nd and the U15 boys came 2nd. Some of our students entered the U19 Golf competition in Diss, where we won the Stableford and the Scratch Cup. The U13 girls Athletics team made it through to the County Finals, which unfortunately we could not attend due to Activities Week. The U13 girls also came 2nd in the Super 8’s and U13 Boys 3rd in the Super 8’s athletics competition. Well done, to all those involved.

The summer term was incredibly busy for the PE Department with many House Matches to organise. There were some exceptional performances within the Inter-House competitions as well as on Sports Day. Sadly Brotherton was the only house not to have won a competition or Sports Day trophy.
