FIVE REASONS WHY WE SHRINK
BACK WHEN GOD CALLS US HIGHER
1. Fear of the battle. All who follow Christ are called to active duty. When we
step into the fray of spiritual warfare, or if we are wounded in the conflict, we
are prone to run away.
2. Resistance to God's Presence. We love to sing about God, but when we get
close to Him, we learn that His holiness is uncomfortable. It makes us aware
of our own sin, purifies motives and consumes offenses. It won't tolerate
secret idols. It is painful to our lower nature, but the best place for us to be is
in His presence.
3. Unwillingness to be broken. Those who want to follow Jesus all the way
must submit to His deepest dealings. The One who wrestled with Jacob and
gave him a permanent limp wants to overpower our pride and selfishness as
well. We say we want to know Him fully, but we forget that He schedules us
for surgery when necessary. His knife hurts, but it makes us more like Him.
4. Reluctance to face persecution. Those who follow Christ wholeheartedly
share in His sufferings. When Paul said he wanted to know Jesus, he knew
that he would have to partake in the “fellowship of Christ’s sufferings.” Please
don't let the ungodly actions of people stop us from chasing God.
5. Refusal to become a voice for others. Ultimately, God wants to send us to a
mission field--whether it is on the other side of the globe or in the office next
door. We tend to recoil from such assignments because they are never conven-
ient, and always require boldness and faith. Like Jonah, we run in the opposite
direction when God asks us to speak for Him.

STEPHEN MINISTRY WORKSHOP SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2016
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM ALDERSGATE UMC FAMILY LIFE CENTER
STEPHEN MINISTRY INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP
Aldersgate UMC will host a half-day Stephen Ministry Introductory workshop on April 2nd
from 9 AM to 1 PM in the Family Life Center. Hundreds of churches from across the Triangle
Region have been invited to learn about this meaningful caregiving ministry that has blessed
our congregation since 2003. This ministry is a key to AUMC’s pastoral care emphasis for it
recruits and trains lay caregivers who provide high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to mem-
bers who are experiencing difficulties in life. Such difficulties might include: the loss of a job,
a debilitating illness, divorce, or some other loss that leaves a person hurting and feeling all
alone?
Any member of AUMC is invited to attend this workshop free . It will provide you with an ex-
cellent opportunity to learn more about how Stephen Ministers provide comfort and support to
grieving members. At the workshop, you will experience a sample of Stephen Ministry training
and learn caregiving skills you can put to use right away.
If you want to register to attend this workshop, or if you need more information, please call
Jack Snyder at 919-477-0509 Ext. 303, or at [email protected].

Thursday (March 24). Come on, all voices are welcome and needed!! Rehearsals are on Wednesday eve-

sical inspiration and preparation?

PRAY WITH US FOR A VOLUNTEER LEADER FOR OUR SACRED
DANCE PROGRAM!
As you know, Aldersgate has a wonderful legacy of beautiful sacred dancers contributing to our worship.
We are in need of some women with dance experience or a heart for sacred dance to begin leading these
groups. We have one elementary group, Young Dancers, who have been dancing on Sunday afternoons.
The youth Sacred Dance group has traditionally practiced on Sunday after Youth group. (These times are
not set in stone; we could poll interest and availability based on the leaders schedule!) If you would like to
know more about this, please contact Nan ([email protected]) . Resource materials/training are availa-
ble! Let’s not let this legacy die – we have young girls very interested in continuing to serve.
CAPITOL ON THE EDGE BRINGS NICAVANGELISTS TO ALDERSGATE!
On April 10-14, a group of 15 youth and leaders from NICARAGUA will be coming to Aldersgate!
This will be an amazing opportunity to widen our understanding and deepen our love for all of God’s
kin-dom!
Capital on the Edge, a non-profit organization, utilizes a holistic approach, assisting young Nicaraguans in
their life’s journey, encouraging them to grow physically,
emotionally and spiritually. This ministry takes in at-risk
youths from the streets of Managua into a talent-
development-program, “the Nicavangelists.” In this
program, they are given food, housing, clothing, an educa-
tion and the chance to develop skills in performance arts.
The Nicavangelists seek to create a bright future for these
incredibly gifted youths by giving them opportunities to
share their talents and culture with the world. Those who
excel in the Nicavangelists program are given the chance to
leave our center in Managua and tour abroad, performing a
40 minute long, street theatre production, CREATED.
Todate, the Nicavangelists have travelled to and performed in Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala
and the USA. “Created” is the story of hope realized. We are all born into a specific context and it is our
choices that ultimately determine our future happiness. The performance utilizes many different genres of
music, from acid jazz, to heavy metal, punk rock, classical, charted hits, and of course, Latino music.
Dance genres include Nicaraguan folk dancing, salsa, bachata, tricking (gymnastics) and modern.
Connect and learn more about our guests from their Facebook page “The Nicavangelists,” from their web-
site, www.nicavangelists.com or watch them perform and give testimony on youtube: https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW6W55SSx9E, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajm0wt3Ddv0, https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhkqy34np6Y
HELP NEEDED! Please watch for details on their performances at Aldersgate. We will need help with
hosts, drivers, and meal providers during their stay with us. Also, if you have any school/community
connections that would help us find additional venues, contact Nan at [email protected] 919-477-0509

NEW SEWING SCHOOL OPENS IN LAS BARRANCAS , GUATEMALA
PAGE 8
The Guatemala Sewing Mission began in 1987 in San Juan Ostuncalco. From the purchase of that first
Singer sewing machine, a sewing school evolved. Since the formal sewing school began in the year 2000,
over 700 students have graduated where they learned skills that they now use to help support their families.
Guatemala has the 4th highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and 49% of the children under the
age of 5 go to bed hungry.
On November 22, 2015, a new Sewing School was dedicated in the remote village of Las Barrancas, Guate-
mala. The local church provided a room in their church while the school was being built, and the local
church also donated land for the school to be built.
The women of Las Barrancas are so excited and proud of their new Sewing School and are most apprecia-
tive to Aldersgate for helping to make this dream a reality. In less than one year, over $16,000 was raised
by Aldersgate, other churches, and individuals from Ohio to Mississippi to Florida.
During the dedication of the new Sewing School, a beautiful embroidered thank- you note was presented by
the Women’s Society of the Mam Presbyterian Church of Jesus of the True Light to Aldersgate United
Methodist Church for our support for the new Sewing School. Many of the students in the school are also
members of the local church.

20th. PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR! Sign up for the walk. Packet pickup and
shirts will be available starting Sunday, March 6th in the Family Life Center. The
walk is less than 5 miles long, so let’s try to beat our number of walkers last year (25)
and get out to support this great activity. Come on – it’s FUN!! AND it supports a
great cause! Questions can be addressed to John Howe at [email protected]. You
can also sign up online at the Aldersgate.org website, under Missions or visit

NEW 2016 HABITAT HOUSE! The Kick off for the new Habitat house will
be March 5th at 11:30 at the job sight (2514 Ashe St. Durham, 27703). If you would
like to help, you can find information at the Welcome Center outside the Sanctuary.
You may also purchase a T-shirt to help support Habitat and wear at the job site.
Please drop off your order form at the church office. For more information on Habitat,
please contact Carl Chmielewski: [email protected] or 919-475-6685.
SANCTUARY REPAIRS
The Trustees have contracted to have the sanctuary ceiling repaired during the first two weeks of March. This will
require services and activities normally held in the sanctuary to be relocated from Feb 29th - March
11th. Arrangements have been made to have services held in the Family Life Center during this time, as well as
choir rehearsals.
OUR SMALLER BUS
Aldersgate has acquired a new, smaller, bus for use by our various groups. This will allow indi-
viduals who do not possess a special CDL license to drive the bus, providing the church a larger
pool of potential drivers. Trustees are revising our bus use policy as well as developing a driver
training program. These items will completed soon. Prospective drivers should contact Mary
Taylor - [email protected] for the necessary forms.
SUNDAY WORSHIP from Feb. 14 – March 20 will also help us to center our spirits in
the Lenten practice. A special sanctuary visual of a Lenten cross created from former
Christmas tree trunk, a crown of thorns and a purple drape, remind us of this season of
penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter
Sunday.

Daily : Pray for Unity - Prayer : O God whose Son prayed that his disciples would be one, we pray for the
unity of The United Methodist Church. Protect us in your name, and protect us from the evil one, that we may
abide in you, the Eternal One, and you in us. Amen. Scripture Text: John 17:20-21— “I ask not only on behalf
of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you,
Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
January: Pray for Understanding - Prayer : Come to me for understanding, since I know you far better
than you know yourself. I comprehend you in all your complexity; no detail of your life is hidden from Me. I
view you through eyes of grace, so don't be afraid of My intimate awareness. Allow the Light of My healing
Presence to shine into the deepest recesses of your being—cleansing, healing, refreshing, and renewing you.
Trust Me enough to accept the full forgiveness that I offer you continually. This great gift, which cost Me My
Life, is yours for all eternity. Forgiveness is at the very core of My abiding Presence.
Scripture Text: Joshua 1:5—No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with
Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.
February: Pray for Discernment - Prayer : Open our eyes and our hear ts to be able to discern your lov-
ing will together. May your love be the root of all that we do and decide. Amen. Scripture Text: Philippians 1:8-
11—For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my pray-
er, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is
best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness
that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
March: Pray for Gentleness and Humility - Prayer : Lord, help us to reject the " wisdom" of the wor ld
and to depend completely on you. Equip us to take on your easy yoke, and make us gentle and humble in heart.
Amen.
Scripture Text: Matthew 11:28-30—“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I
will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
April: Pray for Patience in Preparation - Prayer : Dear Lord, guide us as we prepare for a new season in
the life of our conference and our church. Strengthen our faith and grant us the patience to wait upon your re-
veal. Amen.
Scripture Text: Colossians 3:12-13 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts,
kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against anoth-
er, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
May: Pray for Our Delegation and for the Future - Prayer : Gracious and Loving God, walk with us into
the future of your church. Help us to be as one with one another even as we strive to be one with you. Amen.
Scripture Text: Jeremiah 29:11— For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your wel-
fare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.
June: Pray for Rest - Prayer : Gracious God, let us come to rest in the strength of your Spir it. Release us
from confusion and stress. Bring us together in the tender presence of your mercy, grounded and restored in your
everlasting love.
Scripture Text: Zechariah 4:6—“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the LORD.” Psalm 46:10—
“Be still, and know that I am God!”

When you think about AUMC’s finances, more than likely numbers, commas, and decimals come to mind. Some may think of the annual budget. Others may think about monthly giving or the church’s capital debt. While these are important aspects of the church’s finances, they are not our most important numbers. The real story is what your gener-ous and faithful financial support of the church makes possible – creating disciples of Christ. It is the lives touched, needs met, and relationships deepened with our Lord and Savior. Throughout the remainder of the year in addition to being transparent with how the church is operating financially, the finance committee wants to highlight a few of the num-bers you make possible each month.
Aldersgate Umc Durham Nc, contributed 1052 units of food to Community Back-
pack Ministry and Durham Urban Ministries (via Durham Food Pantry Network).
What a tremendous outpouring of love and generosity!
We pray with and in return Are blessed by the many people that come to Drive Thru
Prayer the 1st Tuesday of each month. March 1st we prayed with over fifteen
people.
MANY WAYS TO GIVE
One convenient way to give is to set up an EFT or electronic funds transfer. You can give a one-time gift or set up weekly, or monthly donations. You can set it up yourself by going to our Aldersgate.org web site and then selecting Mission & Giving and then On-line giving or by contacting our church treasurer. You can make donations to the operating budget, the capital campaign or to spe-cial ministries such as the community backpack ministry or urban ministries, or
make a special memorial gift. Another way to give is by donating shares of stock. We use the United Methodist Foundation and Morgan Stanley to assist us with gifts of stock. If you are interested in this option just contact Mary Taylor by email at [email protected] and she will give you or your stock broker the necessary paperwork to transfer the stock. Thanks for all that you do to support the many missions and ministries of Aldersgate.
