W idden Stud went to $1,000,000 to secure Group One winner Peggy Jean (Myboycharlie), the

highest-priced lot on Day Two of the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale yesterday.

Antony Thompson of Widden Stud said the former Gerald Ryan-trained 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner, who is in foal to I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), would be covered by Sebring (More Than Ready) this year.

“She has a lovely deep pedigree and is just a smashing physical type,” Thompson said.

“For mine, a Group One-winning winning two-year-old is everything you want and she is the sort of mare I think could be a foundation

mare; a real blue hen.“She is a lovely mare for Sebring and that's

where she will be heading this year. I think she is one we will keep for a long time.”

Offered by Yarraman Park as agent for owner Triple Crown Syndications and catalogued as Lot 756, Peggy Jean was the fourth filly or mare of the sale to reach the $1,000,000 mark, which did not come as a surprise to Arthur Mitchell of Yarraman Park.

“We always thought she was a mare that was always going to sell towards the million dollar mark and we were thinking somewhere between $700,000 and $1,000,000, and she made the higher end of what we thought” Mitchell told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She’s a lovely mare, lovely mare and that didn't do any harm (her being in foal to I Am Invincible),” he added.

Vancouver Retired From Racing

The 2015 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) has been retired ahead of his intended engagement in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot.

Part-owned by Coolmore, the three-year-old was transferred to Irish champion trainer Aidan O’Brien earlier in the year with a European Group One sprint campaign in mind.

Vancouver missed his proposed starting point in the Greenlands Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Curragh on 21 May, however, with connections citing an unsatisfactory blood count, and O’Brien revealed on Thursday that the team at Ballydoyle had lost the race against time to get him fit for Royal Ascot.

“Vancouver’s unsatisfactory blood picture precluded us from running him in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh last Saturday week,” said O’Brien.

“His bloods failed to improve as quickly as we might have hoped so he missed more work last week and this week."

Full story on page 21.

PEGGY JEAN MAKES $1,000,000

Peggy Jean is out of Lago Delight (Encosta De Lago) mare Lady Of Love who is an unraced half-sister to Prince Of Dane (Danehill), a Group Three placegetter in South Africa who was also a winner at two.

Triple Crown Syndications’ Michael Ward was delighted with the result after buying Peggy Jean as a yearling for just $46,000.

“It’s an amazing result for us. She won almost a million dollars on the track and now a million dollars in the ring,” Ward told ANZ Bloodstock News.

Ward said most of his syndicated horses are sold at the end of their racing careers but made the decision to maximise her value by sending her to Yarraman Park stallion I Am Invincible last year before putting her through the sales ring.

“It’s a great mating with I Am Invincible and we thought a mare like her, being a Group One winner, we would be doing her justice getting her in foal and then putting her through the ring. Today‘s result has proved that.”

SURF POET SOLD FOR $700,000 Emirates Park went to $700,000 to secure the winning Charge

Forward (Red Ransom) mare Surf Poet who was catalogued as Lot 875. Surf Poet is a half-sister to Group One winner Sweet Idea (Snitzel) and

a sister to the Listed winner Rush being out of the Group Three-placed Flidais (Timber Country). Her second dam is the dual-Group One winner Electronic (First Norman) and she was covered by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) last September during her first season at stud.

“She is a mare that ticks all boxes in terms of pedigree, type and especially as she’s free of Danehill,” Bryan Carlson of Emirates Park told

ANZ Bloodstock News. “She’s a half to a Group One winner in Sweet Idea, Charge Forward

is starting to become a good broodmare sire and she is in foal to Snitzel. The competition was strong but I thought the price was right.”

Charge Forward has produced 18 winners so far as a broodmare sire, headed by the the Listed-placed Alter Call (Fastnet Rock).

The mare was offered by Willow Park Stud who sold the sale’s top lot, Bounding (Lonhro), who went for $1,900,000 on Wednesday. After two days of selling WIllow Park Stud lead the vendors table having sold 23 of the 27 lots they have offered for $6,622,000 at an average of $287,913.

First In-Foal Mares

Sold Up To…

$600,000 $580,000 $520,000 $400,000 $360,000 $280,000

“We've had another remarkable day today and have now sold mares worth $6,600,000 which I'm extremely proud of,” Glenn Burrows told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Prior to the sale our target was $7,300,000 but we are well on course to smash through that.

“To be currently leading vendor by average and aggregate with one day of selling to follow is a position I never thought we'd be in. I really must thank and congratulate my manager Jade and all of the staff for the enormous effort they put in day after day.

“Obviously our highlight was the second highest priced lot today (Thursday) in Surf Poet. When within the last 12 months two of her half relations have made $1,600,000 and $1,100,000 she was always going to be keenly sought after in foal to Snitzel made the package an extremely appealing one.

“The market has been very strong but still with opportunities to get market value if you do your homework and sort the wheat from the chaff.”

SUN BLOODSTOCK PURCHASE YOSEI

Robert and Barbara McClure’s Morning Rise Stud sold Group One winner Yosei (Invincible Spirit) yesterday for $580,000 with the mare purchased by Sun Bloodstock.

Catalogued as Lot 944, Yosei won four times with three of those victories coming at Group One level. The first of those came in the 2010 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick before she added the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in October that year. Yosei’s third Group One victory came in the 2011 Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm where she beat Beaded (Lonhro).

As a weanling, Yosei had been passed in for $14,500 with a reserve of $15,000 when offered at the 2008 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. She went on to win $1,271,075 on the track and was sold having been covered by Newgate Farm’s Deep Field (Northern Meteor) last November.

James Bester, speaking of behalf of the McClure family, said the sale was bittersweet.

“They are happy but torn because she was a family favourite,” said Bester.

First In-Foal Mares Sell This June

“She won three Group Ones and was Rob's first good race mare. She won a Group One at two and then the Guineas and the Winter Stakes. She was a family favourite but he does have two fillies from the family: a Fastnet Rock and a Pierro.

“In this market he felt it was an opportunity to offer her but part with her with a grieving heart as does his wife Barbara. It may yet cause a divorce. Obviously this is a strong market and they were happy with the price which was just a little more than the reserve.”

David O’Callaghan of Sun Bloodstock explained to ANZ Bloodstock News that they were very pleased to have secured Yosei.

“She is by Invincible Spirit who is a world class sire and she is a triple Group One winner so we are very pleased to get her,” O’Callaghan said.

“She is a quality mare and she is an outcross so she can be bred to anything you want really.”

A mating is yet to be decided. “We will have a look after the mare sales finish at what we have bought

and make our minds up from there.” Sun Stud have purchased four lots at the Magic Millions National

Broodmare Sale so far for a total of $1,690,000 and O’Callaghan believes yesterday’s sale offered better value than the opening day of the sale.

“I thought that was about her value. It is hard to buy a triple Group One winner of the track. She is worth a lot of money so we are really pleased to get her,” said O’Callaghan.

“It was very strong yesterday (Wednesday) for the mares off the track. Today (Thursday) was a little more reasonable so we are pretty happy with how we have done.”

Sun Stud’s other purchases include Always Discreet (Exceed And Excel) who cost $400,000 and Sabie (Exceed And Excel) who was purchased for $390,000.

Catalogued as Lot 969, the Group Two-placed Always Discreet, a half-sister to the Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australiasian Oaks) (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Maybe Discreet (Shamardal) and a sister to the Group Three winner Just Discreet (Exceed And Excel) was served by Sebring last September.

Fellow Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Sabie was catalogued as Lot 816, and sold from the draft of Godolphin in foal to Darley shuttler Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado). A Listed winner Sabie is a half-sister to two stakes placegetters in Ankaret (Desert Prince) and Graskop (Manton).

“Sabie was a very genuine stakes winning race filly bred by Sheikh Mohammed, and in foal to our elite stallion Medaglia d'Oro she has sold well,” said Jason Walsh of Godolphin.

“We wish Sun Bloodstock all the very best with her future breeding career.”

100 PER CENT CLEARANCE FOR GODOLPHIN

Godolphin are currently the second leading vendor at the sale having sold all 34 lots for $5,335,500. The highest-priced of these was Zauberflote (Singspiel) who was sold as Lot 949 and was purchased by Yu Long Investments / Sheamus Mills Bloodstock for $525,000.

A four-time winner, Zauberflote was sold in foal to Exceed And Excel

on a September cover having foaled a colt by that sire last year. She is a half-sister to the Listed-placed Bouboulina (Grand Lodge) being out of the unraced Ideal Lady (Seattle Slew).

Zauberflote’s second dam is the French dual-Listed winner Insijaam (Secretariat), the dam of eight winners including the Group Three winners Maputo (Cape Cross) and Pictavia (Sinndar).

John Sunderland of Godolphin said that they were delighted with the sale of Zauberflote.

“We are delighted she has made that sort of the money but the market has been very strong on nice young mares,” said Sunderland.

“She is by Singspiel who has been a great stallion to us and she is in foal to Exceed so it's the right cross, the same cross as Helmet so it had a lot of appeal.

“We’ve worked hard over the years to sell good quality mares and it's nice to get that return. Everyone respects that we are selling them for the right reasons.”

Sheamus Mills noted the opportunity to buy a mare by Singspiel (Machiavellian) and said that Zauberflote will visit Medaglia d’Oro this season.

“The opportunity to buy a Singspiel mare is very rare and with Helmet being by Exceed And Excel out of a Singspiel mare, the pregnancy was also something that was highly attractive,” Mills told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Physically I thought she was a lovely quality mare with great substance for a mare being by Singspiel. Just thought she was one of those rare offerings that you have to pay right up for.

“She will go to the farm in Victoria and be bred to Medaglia d’Oro this season.”

Earlier in the day Widden Stud struck for another of the Godolphin draft when paying $400,000 for Ringhals (Street Cry), who had been covered by Medaglia d’Oro last September. She was catalogued as Lot 799.

Unraced, Ringhals is a daughter of the Grade One winner Black Mamba (Black Minnaloushe) and her second dam is Sneetch (Grosvenor), grandam of the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Roman Emperor (Montjeu). This is also the family of Hong Kong Group One winner Glorious Days (Hussonet).

100 PER CENT CLEARANCE FOR GODOLPHIN

“She is an international commodity; she is a gorgeous type of mare. Obviously by the great Street Cry which holds international currency in any bloodstock makes around the world,” said Antony Thompson.

“Out of Black Mamba, again, a gorgeous Group One-winning mare. A mare like this would fit into a Keeneland Sale, a Tattersalls Sale, any sale in the world and really hold her own,” he added.

Tony Bott purchased Black Mamba for US$1,500,000 at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Kentucky. Ringhals is her first foal and since producing her she has had another four foals and was covered by Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel last December having produced a filly by that same sire the month prior.

A mating is yet to be finalised but Ringhals is likely to be covered by Widden Stud’s resident sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

“You could send her to anything, she will probably go to Zouster I would say. He is a young stallion who is doing a fantastic job with his first crop, and I think she would be a lovely mating to Zoustar,” added Thompson.

Widden Stud has purchased 11 lots so far, spending $2,084,500. Ringhals was purchased by Darley Australia for $500,000 at the 2013

Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. “She was an attractive race mare that we obviously bought at Easter

for a good deal of money,” said Walsh. “She didn't amount to what we hoped on the racecourse, but there

is no reason she couldn't make a top broodmare and we wish Widden all the best.”

Godolphin’s draft averaged $156,926 and Walsh thanked all purchasers and underbidders.

“The market is buoyant at present and generally there has been very strong competition at all levels throughout our draft. We thank all purchasers and under-bidders for their continued support and hope the mares sold represent opportunity and value for their new owners,” Walsh said.

TYREEL ADD TO BROODMARE BAND

TYREEL ADD TO BROODMARE BAND The Woodside Park-based sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia) continued to

prove popular on Day Two and yesterday a daughter of his, Written Dash, sold for $410,000 to Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock Agency on behalf of Tyreel Stud.

Sold by Newgate Farm as agent as Lot 941, Written Dash is one of Written Tycoon’s 18 stakes winners having won last year’s Typhoon Tracy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

She is a daughter of the unplaced Dosh Dash (Dash For Cash) who is herself a half-sister to the Group Two-placed Masthead (Written Tycoon). This is also the family of the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner and now Newgate Farm-based sire Sizzling (Snitzel) with him being a grandson of the Listed winner Laudemio (Alzao), Written Dash’s third dam.

Written Dash was covered by Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) last September and Gabbedy said that the mare has been bought to add to Tyreel Stud’s broodmare band.

“Written Dash was purchased for boutique breeders Tyreel Stud who are committed to adding top quality mares to their broodmare band,” Gabbedy told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She was a Group winner who oozed style and class, is in foal to the gun first season sire Brazen Beau, is a complete out cross for the Danehill sire line and is by the hottest sire in the country in Written Tycoon.

“Linda and Laurence Monds have a long term strategy to continue the tradition of breeding winners and offering quality yearlings and Written

Dash is part of that plan,” Gabbedy added. Belmont Bloodstock are the second leading purchaser at the sale so

far having bought ten lots for $2,334,000, second to China Horse Club who lead the way having spent $5,365,000 on 11 lots.

Newgate Farm have sold 18 of the 21 lots they have offered over the last two days for a total of $3,322,000.

“She is black and beautiful. She was in foal to Brazen Beau who is also black and beautiful,” Newgate Farm’s Bruce Slade told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I can see her producing great looking stock in the green paddocks of Tyreel and she represents everything that works in Australia, colonial speed.”

VORMISTA MAKES $400,000

VORMISTA MAKES $400,000 Newgate Farm were also the vendors of Vormista (Testa Rossa), one

of three mares who sold yesterday for $400,000 to Anthony Penfold. Catalogued as Lot 920, the Group Two-winning Vormista was sold

in foal to Newgate Farm resident Deep Field. The dam of last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Reemah (Redoute’s Choice), Vormista is herself a daughter of the Group winner Natural Beauty (Vain), the dam of five winners and the grandam of the stakes winners Natural Tycoon (Monde Bleu) and Ashkaleta (Ashkalani).

“You just have to look through her form to remind yourself that she is one of the best racemares to pass through the Magic Millions sales ring over the last couple of days,” Bruce Slade told ANZ Bloodstock News.

Newgate Farm sold Vormista’s All Too Hard (Casino Prince) filly at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $165,000 while her Fastnet Rock (Danehill) colt sold last year for $650,000 at the same sale.

“She has already produced a Group One Blue Diamond placegetter and her yearlings have averaged over $500,000 to date. I thought she was great buying at $400,000 and we wish her new owners all the very best.”

Penfold told ANZ Bloodstock News that Vormista has been purchased on behalf of John and Cath Murray and that she will visit Coolmore Australia resident Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) this season.

“She is a gorgeous mare, a great race mare and she is a good producer too,” he said.

“She has already bred a very good two-year-old who ran second in

the Blue Diamond and she breeds a good looker which you can see from what the stock have made at the sales.

“The Fastnet Rock I think made $650,000 and the other one, the filly that was placed in the Blue Diamond made $600,000. A gorgeous mare and she will go to Pride of Dubai. She was purchased on behalf of John and Cath Murray.

“They are hard to buy. It's a strong market,” Penfold added.

SANTRY STRIKES FOR PRETTY PENNY

SANTRY STRIKES FOR PRETTY PENNYSeven mares sold for $500,000 or more yesterday and the fourth

highest-priced lot of the day came early in the session when Colm Santry Bloodstock purchased Pretty Penny (Encosta De Lago) for $570,000.

Catalogued as Lot 769, Pretty Penny (Encosta De Lago) was offered by Amarina Farm as agent. A six-time winner, Pretty Penny has produced five foals for as many winners including the dual Group winner Sertorius (Galileo), Group Three winner Clifton Red (Sebring) as well as the stakes-placed pair of Fortune Of War (General Nediym) and I Am Titanium (Flying Spur).

Pretty Penny was sold having been covered by Brazen Beau last October.

“I thought she was one of the blue hen mares of the whole sale,” Santry old ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Her first four foals are four black type horses and I’m very happy with her. She is a great looker, by Encosta De Lago.”

Santry said that he went over budget to secure Pretty Penny and that she will visit Fastnet Rock this year.

“We had to go a bit over budget but I suppose you have to do that at this sale for these types of mares. We identified one mare to buy and that was the one we really wanted so we are happy to get her. She will go back to Coolmore and she will be bred to Fastnet Rock.”

Craig Anderson of Amarina Farm said that the result was a good one for Pretty Penny’s former owner.

“That was a great result for Billy Cockram the owner. It exceeded our expectations pretty well and very happy with the result,” Anderson said to ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She’s a great producing mare that you look through the catalogue again and again and she was the mare in there that has done the most throughout.”

The final mare to sell yesterday for $500,000 was Alberton Park (Thorn Park) who was purchased for that price by Chinese-based Zou Jing Qing.

Catalogued as Lot 965, from the draft of Fig Tree Thoroughbreds the daughter of Thorn Park (Spinning World) is out of the Group Two-winning two-year-old Alberton Star (Stylish Century), making her a half-sister to the Group Three winner Lady Alberton (Golan).

She was sold having been covered by Exceed And Excel last September with her first foal an unraced two-year-old by Sepoy (Elusive Quality). She also has a yearling colt by Snitzel.

“We are very happy to be here, the gentleman Mr Zou that purchased her is a very big client of Magic Millions and he is looking at purchasing a farm on the Gold Coast,” Amy Feng representing Mr Zou said.

“The mare will stay in Australia and go to Aquis Farm to reside”

STATS VERY STRONGOver the last two days, $51,959,500 has been traded, up 23 per cent

from $42,173,000 last year with three per cent more horses offered this year. The aggregate average is up just over 15 per cent from $120,494

last year to $138,929 this year, while the median showed the biggest increase, up 67 per cent from $45,000 to $75,000.

Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox is understandably very happy with the results.

“We’re very happy from our point of view,” Cox told ANZ Bloodstock News last night.

“The Weanling Sale was fantastic. They were averaging much more than most yearling sales in the country and it is a legitimate option for breeders to consider to sell at and on the back of that the Broodmare Sale has started very well.

“The first day was very good but I think the second day got even stronger there for a couple of hours. Having said all that, there are a lot of horses there and if people do their homework they might be surprised who they go home with.”

Cox is optimistic for the last two days of the sale. “We are optimistic looking ahead; we think tomorrow will be a very

good day of selling as well. We have got a lot of horses to get through but there are some very nice horses again. And there’s some diversity in what is being offered so there will be plenty of opportunities for buyers operating at different levels. We are hopeful of some very strong results.”

The third day of the four day sale begins this morning at 10am.

EAGLE FARM CUP FOR DERBY-BOUND SNAPPERSnapper (Shocking) will continue an unorthodox path to the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm on 11 June when the three-year-old tackles weight-for-age company in the Eagle Farm Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) on Saturday. Snapper ran fourth to Col 'N' Lil (Bradbury’s Luck) in a 2000 metre Benchmark 85 at Doomben two weeks ago and is 20th in the order of entry for the Queensland Derby. "It isn't the biggest field on Saturday and if he can pick up some prize money it might get him into the Derby," trainer John Morrisey said.

TAKEDOWN AND ARTLEE SCRATCHED

Both the Gary Moore-trained Takedown (Stratum) and the Todd Willian-trained Artlee (Excellent Art) have been scratched from tomorrow’s meeting at Eagle Farm. Takedown, who was due to contest the Daybreak Lover Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and Artlee, who was due

to run in the QTC Cup (Gr 2, 1300m) will be saved for the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 11 June where they will carry 50.5 kilograms and 52 kilograms respectively.

JAMES AIMING FOR SECOND QLD OAKS

Despite the prospect of a wet track in tomorrow’s Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) trainer Roger James remains confident of the chances of Romantic Maid (High Chaparral). A last start winner over 2000 metres at Randwick, Romantic Maid has drawn barrier 15 and will be ridden by Sam Clipperton. "They are forecasting rain and even when Romantic Maid had a run along here the other day there was a bit of kickback. I've really got no idea how she would handle it if the track did become rain-affected,” he said. CENTURI SPELLEDPromising filly Divine Centuri (I Am Invincible), a winner of four of her six starts including the Mick Dittman Plate (Listed, 1000m), has been spelled and will undergo surgery to remove bone chips from a knee. The Stuart Kendrick-

trained three-year-old was scratched from last week’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) due to the issue. Divine Centuri is expected to spend at least three months in the paddock while she recovers from the operation.

MCEVOY AIMS FOR FURTHER GROUP ONE

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy is hopeful Dawnie Perfect (Big Brown) can continue his Brisbane Group One winning streak in the Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm tomorrow. McEvoy is chasing his third Group One of the Queensland Winter Carnival following wins aboard Our Ivanhowe (Soldier Hollow) in the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Music Magnate (Written Tycoon) in the Doomben 10,000. Trained by Clarry Conners, Dawnie Perfect is equal second favourite at $7.50, having drawn barrier 22 (with emergencies). “She’s been racing well and is an out and out stayer and she’s not the type of filly who shows up in short trips,” McEvoy said.

KENNEWELL SHOWS FAITH IN SPAINAdelaide apprentice Zac Spain has been rewarded for his hard work with speedy mare Jennyfromtheblock (Kaphero) by retaining the ride on her in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1000m) at Eagle Farm tomorrow. Trainer Lloyd Kennewell said Spain had ridden the mare in five of her eight wins. "Zac will be the next big thing in Adelaide racing and possibly Australian racing. He is only 19 but he is very mature and he knows Jennyfromtheblock," Kennewell said. "He rode her when she won at Moonee Valley at his first ride in Melbourne and I am confident he can repeat the effort at his first Brisbane ride."

NEXT RUN FOR TWO BLUE UNDECIDEDTrainer Kristen Buchanan plans to continue with the preparation of tough on-pace mare Two Blue (Dubleo) after she was caught up in a mad speed battle in last week’s Doomben 10,000. The Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner led on Saturday before wilting late to finish last in the nine-horse field. Buchanan could run Two Blue in next week’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) or against her own sex in the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on the same day. A seven-year-old, Two Blue is bound for stud later this year.

NO ONE TO BLAME FOR NOLEN FALLThe fall which has left jockey Luke Nolen with serious injuries has been ruled an accident by Thoroughbred Racing South Australia stewards. Nolen suffered a broken left

collarbone, shoulder and several broken ribs as well as a bruised spleen and liver when he came off Miss Promiscuity (Magnus) in last month's UBET Classic (registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville. He is expected to be sidelined until at least the end of the season on 31 July. An inquiry by stewards found Nolen came off when Miss Promiscuity knuckled around the 700 metre mark. Stewards said no other rider was to blame for the incident.

COSTIN INJURED Sydney jockey Winona Costin will have surgery after being injured in a trackwork fall, forcing her to miss tomorrow’s Rosehill meeting. The apprentice suffered a laceration to her leg while riding work at Rosehill yesterday. Last season's champion apprentice in Sydney, Costin has only recently returned to riding after she was injured in a race fall at Grafton in April. Costin's book of five rides at Rosehill on Saturday included Ravi (Redoute’s Choice), favourite to make it back-to-back wins as the three-year-old takes on her own age over 1200 metres.

ARROWFIELD SEEKING NIGHT WATCH & FOALING ASSISTANT Arrowfield Stud is seeking an experienced nightwatch and foaling assistant for the forthcoming breeding season. The ideal candidate should have extensive experience with foaling mares, excellent observation skills, the ability to make the right decision under pressure and a high level of professional dedication. There is also the potential for the successful applicant to continue working for Arrowfield Stud full-time at the conclusion of

the breeding season. Please send applications by Friday 10th June with a CV to [email protected].

WA GROUP ONE PROGRAM CHANGE Perth Racing has revamped its summer carnival programming by running its three premier Group One races on consecutive Saturdays instead of on the same day. The new-look three-week carnival will see the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) run on 19 November, the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on 26 November and the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) held on 3 December.

New Zealand

THE HASSLER SOLD TO HKChampionship Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) winner The Hassler (Shocking) has been sold and will continue his racing career in Hong Kong. Trainer Roger James confirmed the sale after negotiations were completed. "He's been sold to Hong Kong,” said James. “Negotiations have been bubbling away for the last couple of weeks but the money is in the bank so it's all gone through now.”

SOUTHERN SAV RETURNS TO WORKNew Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) placegetter Southern Sav (Savabeel) is back in training with trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman. The six-year-old gelding will aimed at a return to the New Zealand Cup carnival at Riccarton in the spring. Southern Sav was last seen when finishing eighth in the Trentham Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) on 16 January.

CONTENTMENT AND MAURICE WORK

Maurice (Screen Hero) and Contentment (Hussonet), who finished first and second in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on 1 May, both took part in a racecourse gallop at Tokyo Racecourse yesterday. The pair are due to meet in the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) on Sunday and Masanori Watanabe, assistant to Maurice’s trainer Noriyuki Hori, is confident

Maurice will run well despite not being at peak fitness. “If we had another week he’d be 100 per cent; as it is he’s around 80 to 90 percent; if we had one more week I think he would be at the peak of his form, but I’m sure that he will give a hell of a performance this Sunday, nevertheless,” Watanabe said.

FOUR FOR FAST COMPANYDarley stallion Fast Company (Danehill Dancer) sired his fourth stakes winner when Val Nanda (2 f ex Kristal Xenia by Xaar) won the Premio Alessandro Perrone (Listed, 1100m) at Rome yesterday. The Cristiana Signorelli-trained filly beat Elusive Quality (Shaweel) and has now won both starts.

16 FOR DERBYUS Army Ranger (Galileo) heads up a five-strong team from Ballydoyle as 16 colts were declared for The Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom tomorrow. The Chester Vase (Gr 3, 1m 4.5f) winner faces a rematch with stable companion Port Douglas (Galileo), while Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f) runner up Deauville (Galileo), Idaho (Galileo) and Shogun (Fastnet Rock) also make the cut for Aidan O’Brien as he hunts a sixth Derby success. Wings Of Desire (Pivotal) represents last year’s winning trainer John Gosden, while French hopes will rest on the Andre Fabre-trained Prix Greffulhe (Gr 2, 2000m) victor Cloth Of Stars (Sea The Stars).

GOING CHANGED AT EPSOM After a wet start to the week in the south of England, yesterday was a dry day at Epsom Racecourse and the going is now good to soft, soft in places. The course had previously been rated soft, good to soft in places. Andrew Cooper, clark of the course Tweeted yesterday afternoon: “Ground @EpsomRacecourse now Good to Soft, Soft in places after a dry and breezy day. Mainly dry Friday with chance of light rain.”

AROD NOT DEFINITE FOR DIOMED The Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Arod (Teofilo) could be scratched from today’s Diomed Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Epsom, a race he won last year by two lengths. Connections of the entire are concerned about potentially soft ground and will walk the course this morning before a decision is made on whether Arod runs. The son of Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo) raced twice in Australia last year, finishing unplaced in both the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Emirates Stakes (registered as Cantala Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) and made his 2016 season debut in the Paradise Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Ascot in April where he finished third. LADY PENKO TO SELL AT GOFFS LONDON SALEThe Listed winner and Group One-placed Lady Penko (Archipenko) will be offered in foal to multiple Group One winner Golden Horn (Cape Cross) at the Goffs London Sale on Monday 13 June. Catalogued as Lot 25 the five-year-old mare, who is part of The Castlebridge Consignment, will offer breeders the first chance to purchase a mare in foal to Golden Horn. Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby is delighted to offer the mare. “Golden Horn is undoubtedly the most anticipated sire in Europe this year and Goffs is thrilled to offer another world first in London,” Beeby said.

BEHOLDER SET FOR VANITYSpendthrift Farm’s multiple Grade One winner Beholder (Henny Hughes) will bid for her eighth successive victory when she runs in the Vanity Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trainer Richard Mandella is confident in the chances of the six-year-old. "She appears to be as good as she's ever been," Mandella told www.bloodhorse.com. "We'd like to think she's going to keep getting better."

The 2015 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) has been retired ahead of his intended engagement

in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot.

“His bloods failed to improve as quickly as we might have hoped so he missed more work last week and this week.

“Unfortunately we’ve now run out of time to get him ready for the (Diamond) Jubilee at Royal Ascot and the July Cup.

“It’s very disappointing as he looked very special on what we’d seen of him at home and we were looking forward to running him.”

Formerly trained at Tulloch Lodge by Gai Waterhouse, Vancouver went unbeaten as a two-year-old, breaking the juvenile track record at Randwick when landing the Todman Stakes

Vancouver Retired From Racing (Gr 2, 1200m) last Autumn before overcoming a tough barrier draw to land the Golden Slipper from subsequent All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) heroine English (Encosta De Lago).

The colt will stand at Coolmore Stud in Australia for a fee of $66,000 and is expected to return to Australia next month.

“It’s a major disappointment that Vancouver won’t be running at Royal Ascot but he is proving very popular with breeders so we’re keen to get him here as soon as possible,” said Coolmore Australia’s Tom Magnier.

“He’ll enter quarantine in Newmarket next week and will be on the farm here in Coolmore Australia by mid-July.”

SPILL THE BEANS TO AQUIS

The inaugural Aquis Farm stallion roster will feature dual-Group Three winner Spill The Beans (Snitzel) after the Canungra-based operation purchased a controlling interest in the three-year-old.

Spill The Beans, who will stand for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST), is due to run in the QTC Cup (Gr 2, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday for trainer Gerald Ryan and will be ridden by Tim Clark.

Mark Wooldridge, stallion manager at Aquis Farm, was delighted to secure the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) who he believes would be an asset for any stud farm in Australia.

“We are absolutely delighted to have secured one of the most commercial young entires in training for our first breeding season,” said Wooldridge. “No established sire in Australia is more commercial than Snitzel at this time, and with Spill The Beans we have managed to acquire a young horse that would not be out of place on any stallion roster in the country.”

Part-owned by Arrowfield Stud, who will retain a significant interest in the colt, Spill The Beans was unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile before winning the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick and the Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m) earlier this year.

Spill The Beans is out of the winning Falbrav (Fairy King) mare Miss Dodwell who is herself a half-sister to the stakes winners Yammer (Bellotto) and Blab (Flying Spur), the latter being the dam of the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor) as well as the Group Two

winner Wild And Proud (Snowland). Further back this is the family of the multiple Group One-winning champion Bounding Away (Biscay).

Spill The Beans will stand alongside Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill), Domesday (Red Ransom) and Benfica (Lonhro) at Aquis Farm in 2016.

RACING NEWSRyan Close To A Snitzel Century

Arrowfield Stud seeks an experienced Nightwatch & Foaling Assistant for the 2016 breeding season. Essential requirements are:• Extensive experience with foaling mares• Excellent observation skills and ability to make the right decisions under pressure• A high level of professional dedication

There is potential for the successful applicant to continue working for Arrowfield in a full-time position after the breeding season. Based near Scone in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Arrowfield Stud is the leading Australian-owned thoroughbred breeding operation, the home of Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice and the source of 58 Group 1 winners since 1985. Please send applications by Friday 10th June with a CV to [email protected]

NIGHT WATCH & FOALING ASSISTANT

Gerald Ryan, trainer of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), is close to winning his 100th race with the progeny of his former stable star. Having now trained 43 individual winners by Snitzel to 99 victories, Ryan has three chances tomorrow to notch his

100th win with the progeny of the Arrowfield Stud-based sire. Spill The Beans and Dances On Stars will run in the QTC Cup (Gr 2,

1300m) and the Spear Chief Handicap (Listed, 1500m) at Eagle Farm respectively, while Argie Bargie will contest the Thirroul 2YO Handicap (1400m) at Kembla Grange.

Ryan has trained nine of Snitzel’s 38 stakes winners and with the progeny of Snitzel he has won $8,300,000 in prize money. The list of Snitzel’s offspring trained by Ryan are headed by the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Snitzerland while the Group Two winners include Time For War, Flying Snitzel, Hot Snitzel and Perignon.

Raced by Damion Flower, Ryan purchased Snitzel with Flower for $260,000 at the 2004 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Yarraman Park.

"Damion and I said before we bought him as a yearling, if this horse can gallop he will make a stallion, so to see what he's doing is very pleasing. I'm very proud of him,” said Ryan.

"He doesn't stamp his progeny as types, but most of them are really athletic and, like him, they don't go shin sore. They have pretty good temperaments too and if they're feisty they improve with each prep.

"I train the Snitzels similar to how I trained him. When he galloped, he went fast, but I kept him sharp."

Raced by Darby Racing, Snitzerland ran second in the 2012 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) before taking out the Lightning Stakes two years later.

"Snitzerland went through from her breaker's prep to run second at her first start in a Listed Race on Melbourne Cup Day. She was so tough, and always did everything you wanted her to do,” said Ryan.

"I also have a soft spot for Intertidal, Snitzel's first winner. I raced and trained his mum Miss Rainmaker, as well as her sire Hurricane Sky."

Having her third start having run second on debut at Hawkesbury on 14 April before finishing fifth in last month’s Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone. Jumping from barrier six in the seven-horse field under Kerrin McEvoy, Irish

Sea pressed forward and settled down in third, one out and one back. At the top of the straight McEvoy pulled Irish Sea out to the middle of the track and she kept finding under pressure to score a narrow but good victory.

Irish Sea becomes the third winner for her Group Two-winning dam Hips Don’t Lie (Stravinsky) after the Listed winner and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) third Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock) and Burning Mountain

(Fastnet Rock). Hips Don’t Lie recorded five wins including the 2008 Reisling Stakes (Gr

2, 1200m) and is a half-sister to the stakes performers Azevedo (Helissio), Acquired (O’Reilly) and Procurement (O’Reilly) being out of the winning mare Procure (Centaine). Irish Sea’s third dam is the Listed winner Getting There (Jungle Boy), dam of 11 winners including Rhythm (Bahkaroff), Tristachine (Sir Tristram) and Western Music (Western Symphony).

Hips Don’t Lie was covered by Fasnet Rock (Danehill) again last November having foaled a filly by her while her yearling, also by Fasnet Rock), was purchased by Jadesky Racing / Nordic Breeding & Racing for $1,100,000 at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

While Matthew Sandblom could be considered ‘lucky’ to be a part-owner of this year’s Golden Slipper

(Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon), the book publisher has put a lot of hard work, planning and smart investing into his commitment to thoroughbred racing and breeding.

A partner in growing Hunter Valley stud farm Newgate, Sandblom has decided to stand the Group Three winner and Group One-placed Bull Point (Fastnet Rock) ($7,700), Group Two winner Salade (Snitzel) ($4,400) and Group One winner Monaco Consul (High Chaparral) ($6,600).

Despite his success with Newgate, Sandblom had an ambition to run his own

Interview By Alice Lukey-Smith

property on a smaller scale, leading to the development of Kingstar Farm.

“It’s a project which I can run and try a few things out in terms of how to market them and giving a fair deal to the breeder,” Sandblom told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Newgate is at a higher level, but I just wanted to try something that still takes a bit of investment and time. The farm needed a bit of setting up, while it had horses on it before it has had a lot money invested into it recently. We wanted to make it into a well set-up farm.”

Kingstar Farm is located at Denman in the Hunter Valley, competing against the biggest studs in the Southern Hemisphere including Coolmore, Darley, Arrowfield, Widden and, of course, Newgate.

“Kingstar is about 220 acres. We didn’t have stallion boxes on it or anything, so we had to put those in and a serving shed, a bit of fencing. If I manage to make it work, even at a modest scale, it would give me personally a lot of satisfaction,” he said.

Standing stallions at the lower end of the market isn’t easy, but Sandblom attended the recent Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale in Sydney is attending the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast.

“I was out there at the broodmare sales buying a bunch of mares for Bull Point trying to find some nice enough bred mares with maybe a bit of black type to give him a bit of a shot,” he said.

“I think we bought six mares over the last three days for that purpose and we will probably

add a few more up at the Gold Coast as well, plus a few other mares, so we will give it a good shot and hopefully we will get other breeders on board at a price that they can afford.

“I would just like to see it work. I am a pretty determined person and I can see what you need to do to make a stallion work. You need to get numbers particularly in the first couple of seasons, that’s important.

“You need to get some decent mares into the stallion, early on in particular, and you need to get some good stock at the various weanling and yearling sales in the future. So by breeding a decent number of mares to them which we think will produce decent stock, we will have some good stock to show at sales in the future.

“It’s not just: ‘here you have a stallion, everyone should come and use it’. You need to work at each stage of the process, from the stallion selection to serving the mares to following through which mares you breed with.

“Newgate do a very good job at that and make sure their stallions are supported at each stage of the process, so on a smaller scale that’s what we will be doing with the stallions that we have, particularly Bull Point because he is obviously a first-season stallion.

“While the other two stallions have stock racing and that will determine their success, if they get a few good ones on the race track.”

Sandblom’s early involvement in horse ownership started in harness racing and before that playing bookmaker at school.

“As far as the involvement in the industry, I worked at a racetrack when I was young, it was for trotters, though, not gallopers,” he said.

“I grew up in Glebe in Sydney, so I sold the racebooks and the newspapers there for a few years, all the way through until I finished university.

“I guess that was my initial exposure to racing per say. I didn’t mind having a bet and I was even the school bookmaker for a while, so at one stage I thought I would be a bookmaker. I probably could have gone all right if I went online with it.”

Friday 3 June 2016 I N P E R S O N W I T H

Although Sandblom had an interest in betting, he chose to head into another field and formed a publishing company: Pascal Press.

“I ended up making books of another kind in publishing. I started a company called Pascal Press which mostly publishes books for schools: workbooks and textbooks. I started that some 27 years ago and it’s gone all right.,” he said.

“In my thirties I did buy a couple of horses, a couple of trotters actually, which I had a bit of fun with. They were cheaper, raced more

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 26 |

often and then tend to win more often than thoroughbreds. Eventually, though, I did start getting into the thoroughbreds, dabbling a little bit. I just bought a couple of cheapies.

“I had a few with Gwenda Markwell down the South Coast at Kembla, they were just a few cheapies that I bought. I have a farm near Kiama just on the South Coast, a bit past Kembla and I used to have parties at the farm where we would invite the locals and have a little parade of the yearlings.

“We usually bought in the $15,000 to $20,000 price bracket and we had some fun. We had some reasonable horses and some not so good ones but it’s been one of those things where as I had the means, from business successes, I would buy some more.

“At the farm at Kiama I had a few inexpensive mares. I was trying to work out what breeding was about, I didn’t really know a lot. So I was dabbling there for a while, some 13 or 14 years ago.”

When Sandblom met legendary trainer Bart Cummings, his hobby breeding and racing interests started to head to a more professional level and his involvement increased dramatically.

“I spent a bit of time with Bart Cummings. I met him up at Lizard Island on the Barrier Reef. We seemed to hit it off, so I started attending all the sales and the races with him. I went to the Melbourne Cup and such races and it was an interesting time,” he said.

“It was later in his career, but he did win a Melbourne Cup with Viewed and he also had So You Think there towards the end, so it was good to see all that close up, not that I owned any of those horses.

“He was a legend and I met some interesting people through him. I went to the sales and was able to see what he looked for. I had a few with Bart as well, probably the best of them is a stallion I now stand called Salade, who won a Group Two as a two-year-old.

“That was about five or six years ago, I bumped into Henry Field at a sale when he was still working for Coolmore. We got talking and then when he went out on his own, he asked me if I wanted to back him when he was doing some pinhooking and some ready to run horses.”

Once the relationship with Field was established, Sandblom upped his involvement in breeding and racing, eventually becoming a partner in Newgate Farm

“When Henry got into his farm I got involved

Friday 3 June 2016 N E W S

in the stallion side of things and then become a partner in Newgate as well. As a part of that we bought quite a lot of the Shantha’s Choice family at the Teeley Assets Dispersal as well as buying stallions like Foxwedge, Dissident, Wandjina and Deep Field,” he said.

“I was also involved in the syndicate which Henry and James Harron put together to buy some colts to try. The aim was to get some good horses that could be made stallions because it was so competitive to buy the stallions, well the ones we wanted, off the track.

“A couple of times we went up against Coolmore to try and buy horses like Pride Of Dubai and Vancouver and they generally outbid us or out manoeuvred us. That’s why we ended up with our own group of colts and we had some luck in the first year by getting a very good horse in Capitalist who won us the Golden Slipper.”

It was a bold, large-scale investment by Newgate and partners, with more than 30 colts purchased last year with a view to buying a stallion prospect.

“When you do it on a scale like we did with James and Henry with the colts fund, you are trying to do it in a business-like way. There is a certain criteria and a certain level of investment,” he said.

“We didn’t just buy Capitalist, we bought 30-plus other horses as well, so when you do it like that it is more like seeing a plan come

Bull Point KINGSTAR FARM

“I GUESS THAT WAS MY INITIAL EXPOSURE TO RACING PER SAY. I DIDN’T MIND HAVING A BET

to fruition. In the racing game, it’s pretty hard to pull off because most plans don’t pan out as hoped. It’s been satisfying from a business point of view.

“From a more passionate racing and breeding plan, if you breed something or pick something out of the ring yourself and race it through to Group success, that’s probably more personally satisfying.”

To win the Golden Slipper in the first year of the colts’ fund is a remarkable achievement, one that is not lost on Sandblom.

“As a breeder, the obvious one is a Golden Slipper, especially with a colt. You can’t beat that for getting the maximum value out of a colt. Other than that, I don’t have a race in particular,” he said.

“What we are doing with those colts is all about getting horses who are going to be a sprinters or maybe milers, so we are not targeting horses for the middle or longer distances and I guess that is the breeding in Australia and it is hard to fight against that.

“We did buy into Wandjina and took him to Royal Ascot for the Golden Jubilee. He

probably wasn’t the perfect horse to take there, you probably need an out-and-out 1200 metre horse rather than a miler like Wandjina. But it would be good to take a horse to win one of those sprint races. I guess that is the best chance Australian horses have to win a big Group One over there and that would be good.”

While the foundations of Kingstar was formed while learning the ropes with a few mares on the South Coast of NSW, Sandblom scaled back that the South Coast farm and there was only one destination his new stud could be: the Hunter Valley.

“The farm down on the South Coast did not eventually work out, it wasn’t ideal horse

Friday 3 June 2016 I N P E R S O N W I T H

country. It was very hilly and probably the soil didn’t have enough limestone in it. I always had to give the horses supplements,” he said.

“For the new farm, I thought it was best to go to the Hunter Valley. I was mucking around standing Salade, but I thought I hadn’t really done him justice. I gave him to someone else to stand and they didn’t really get many mares to him, so I thought I should do it properly.

“I guess when you get involved in a horse like Salade, when you pick him out of the sales ring, see him race and then try and make him into a stallion, it is a very satisfying an idea.

“We have taken Bull Point because we need something with a bit of a profile for the first season to give a bit more profile for the stud and he is also very well bred. He’s a well-known horse who had a big spruik on him early on.

“He probably didn’t quite get there as a three-year-old, but he certainly ran in a lot of good races.”

“They went really quick and I don’t think I’ve been in a race over 1350 or 1400 metres when they went so quick,” Kerrin McEvoy said after winning

Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) on the Bjorn Baker-trained Music Magnate (Written Tycoon).

With noted leader Two Blue (Dubleo) going to the front as expected, the unexpected then happened with Hooked (Casino Prince) and a stirred-up Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) adding further pressure for the lead, resulting in a hot early tempo.

That took its toll on that leading trio, who then weakened in the straight to finish last, seventh and sixth in the nine-horse field respectively.

McEvoy had kept Music Magnate several lengths back off that pace, racing in fifth place until making his move rounding the home turn.

Music Magnate hit the front at the 100 metres and then fought back gamely to defeat Azkadellia (Shinko King), who came from the tail of the field, by just under a length with Charlie Boy (Myboycharlie) making ground along the rails for a close-up third.

Time for the 1350 metre distance was 1:17.77 (11.52 200m rate), equivalent to 1400 metres in a fast 1:20.65.

But as noted by McEvoy, it was the early sectional times that really told the story.

The first 750 metres was clocked in 41.99 (11.19 200m rate), equivalent to a first 800 metre time of 44.78, while the first 950 metres was clocked in 53.43 (11.24 200m rate), equivalent to a first 1000 metre time of 56.24 – very fast indeed.

A relatively lightly-raced four-year-old Music Magnate, who has now had 12 starts for six wins, showed his quality in coming off such a pace to win.

Music Magnate and the runner-up Azkadellia now head to the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week with strong credentials.

Another impressive performance on the watch at Doomben was the win of the Godolphin-raced filly Ghisoni (Londro) in the Glenlogan Park Stakes (registered as Moreton Stakes) (Gr 3, 1350m).

Ghisoni was quickly away from her outside barrier (10), travelled well outside the leader and then fought back gamely after going to the front at the 200 metres to score comfortably by just over a length in the quick time of 1:17.99.

In fact her overall time compared favourably with Music Magnate’s time in the Doomben 10,000 being only 0.22 seconds slower.

But naturally the early tempo was far less demanding than in that Group One feature with Ghisoni clocking 55.05 for her first 950 metres (11.58 200m rate), equivalent to a first 1000 metre time 57.94, which remains impressive, nevertheless.

In addition, Ghisoni was timed to sprint home with fast closing sectionals, in better balanced run race, with her final 600 metres in 34.32 and final 400 metres in 22.82.

She now heads to the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week, prior to being aimed at a spring campaign.

The other race over the 1350 metre journey at Doomben on Saturday was the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1350m) which was taken out by the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Attention (Stratum).

After beginning well, Attention settled nicely outside the leader Dreams Aplenty (Dream Ahead) before getting the upper hand at the 100 metre point. He then went on to defeat his rival by a neck, seeming to win with something in hand.

Time for the 1350 metres was 1:19.09, and while it was 1.32 seconds slower than Music Magnate and 1.10 seconds slower than Ghisoni, it was still a very smart performance by the two-year-old.

Attention’s 1:19.09 (11.71 200m rate) is equivalent to 1400 metres in a smart 1:22 and

he came home his final 600 metres in 34.70, last 400 metres in 23.32 looking on track for the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

Other impressive winners on Saturday’s Doomben card, headed for Group features at Eagle Farm, were Real Love (Desert King) and Mackintosh (Pins).

The Bob Peters-raced Real Love is in top form for new trainer Darren Weir and the tough staying mare excelled when presented with a truly run Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) in a perfect lead-up to Saturday week’s Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2400m).

She settled really well in fourth place before moving up to challenge on straightening. Real Love then took the lead at the 100 metres and drew clear away for a strong win over her stablemate Puccini (Encosta De Lago).

Time for the 2200 metre journey was 2:14.31 (12.21 200m rate), equivalent to 2400 metres in a fast 2.26.52, strengthening her claims for the Brisbane Cup, over that distance

The Chris Waller-trained Mackintosh, a winner of four of his last five starts, now tackles the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on Saturday week after taking out the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m).

Mackintosh again raced handily, tracking the leader before getting to the front at the 200 metres. He then fought back to score by a short neck from Eagle Way (More Than Ready) with the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Howard Be Thy Name (Redoute’s Choice) a close-up third.

Time for the 2200 metre distance was 2:16.85 (12.40 200m rate), equivalent to 2400 metres in 1:28.85 and while Mackintosh’s time was 2.14 seconds slower that Real Love, he too looks set for a bold bid at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

He then travelled well, steadying the tempo mid-race before lifting when challenged on straightening. He then drew away over the final stages to score a soft win, running the 1600m out particularly well.

Analysis: Alan Denham-trained two-year-old Treviso put up a nice effort in scoring here on debut. He was smartly away from barrier seven and soon drove through to lead. He then travelled well, grabbed a break rounding the home turn and although tiring, still held on to score quite well considering his early efforts. The Chris Waller-trained filly Seventhchic made a very promising debut. She went back from her wide barrier (9) and settled in second last place in the ten-horse field. She improved nearing the home turn, fanned widest of all at the home turn and then ran on particularly well for second, looking suited to further. She is a filly to watch.
