D M IHIRUBHAI ISTRY NSTITUTE
A unique educational & training institute with a professional touch
Enriching educational experience for print technology students. A destination of choice for customers. A strategic platform for industry associates
A fitting tribute tolate Shri Dhirubhai Mistry
The founder of Grafica group of companies (1952).
As a genius in printing technology,
he himself was a student of Fine Arts & Design
from Mumbai's famous Sir J J School of Applied Arts.
It was his vision to set up an institute like DMI to
provide full fledged education and training to students
in screen printing and make them finest screen
printing technologists rather than machine operators.
Grafica took up the initiative to make his dream a
reality. In just two years, the seed sowed by him
has transformed into a beautiful tree - DMI.
The present Grafica Management pays a rich tribute
to late Shri Dhirubhai Mistry for his noble vision
FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK
Bhargav Dhirubhai Mistry
Director
Dear friends
Welcome to DMI - Dhirubhai Mistry Institute for Print Education, Research & Training.
The establishment of DMI is indeed a historic moment in the Indian screen printing. It is
an initiative of Grafica Flextronica which is specialized in the manufacture of high quality
screen printing / UV curing / screen making machines and equipment since 1989. DMI is
located within Grafica premises.
Late Shri Dhirubhai Mistry, founder of Grafica Group of Companies had a great vision to
set up a unique institute to impart training and education in screen printing to students.
Many of our customers and industry associates feel that an institute like DMI was a long
due. To transform his VISION into a reality, Grafica's core management team made
every effort by spending enormous time and resources.
DMI received a real sustenance from one great guru from printing industry, Michel Caza,
Chairman of Academy of Screen Printing Technology (ASPT) and ex-president of FESPA.
I specially thank Michel Caza for all the support he has extended to DMI's establishment
right from evolution to completion. I express my high gratitude to the entire FESPA team
for their support. I am also thankful to Michael Robertson, President, SGIA; Dawn M
Hohl, Technical Training Manager, SPTF and their team for technical inputs.
I am also grateful to all our customers, industry associates and other well wishers who
were a constant support for the setting up of DMI. In turn, DMI is committed to give back
to all its supporters by offering various educational and training programmes, courses,
seminars, workshops, experts' lectures, technical consulting, etc. Grafica management
also acknowledges its employees for their cooperation for the successful completion of
this noble project.
These programmes are being conducted by experienced team of faculties. Also,
renowned international speakers, namely, Michel Caza, Mike Young, Charlie Taulieb,
Scott Fresener, Bill Hood and many others will also come to DMI from time to time, to
share their rich experience and provide deeper insights into advanced yet practical
techniques. This way, DMI is committed to help Grafica customers in every possible way
in terms of knowledge and technological expertise. For our industry associates, DMI will
be a strategic platform. And for students, the training at DMI will be an educational
experience!
I heartily invite Grafica customers, printing professionals, students of print education
institutes and Grafica industry associates to register for DMI's various training

Dear Bhargav
Today is my Birthday! and that's a double occasion of this beautiful school we so highly wished, both you and me!
I remember a few years ago when I gave, at your demand, an unexpected conference at the Govt. Institute of Printing
Technology (GIPT), Mumbai, I told you that it was a real need and demand in India for a School to teach not the old
obsolete silkscreen technology, but the really modern high tech Screen -printing in a dedicated College and
Training Centre.
You did it by creating DMI in the honour of your father! And I can only say Bravo and to be glad if the support of the so
called Guru of Screen-printing as some of my Indian friends name me to my honour my modest contribution to the
development and improvement of screen-printing in the world and mostly in a country dear at my heart, I mean India.
As you know, for me, screen-printing is not an industry, but a fantastic technology that is used by many industries with
so many old, new and not yet discovered applications. In future, as well in graphic, as in textile and industrial
applications, depends essentially of the quality of image or any other use of screen-printing and this result can only
be achieved by going through an exceptional level of education.
That is my total belief, and I also believe that DMI is exactly the ideal tool that can be used to achieve goal which,
if I look to the fantastic potential of our dear technology in India, will need not only your own efforts, the ones of DMI as
an "Institute and Institution" = even better than a "Simple School", but also the help of all the Indian Institutions
and of the FESPA, are deeply concerned by the success of such and initiative that we support, encourage and help
with all our power and all our possibilities.
As you know, again, a big part of my heart belongs to India and also to you, my spiritual son and pupil in screen-
printing and you can then understand that I shall continue to make, in the limits of my possibilities and power of course,
all the efforts, all the efforts to push DMI to the top!
Your friend and Guru

Screen printingScreen Printing Process
Silk screen printing is a name first used when a mesh or screen was made of natural silk.
It is also known as "Serigraphy" particularly when used for creating or reproducing fine
art.
Screen Printing - Advantages:
High rub and scratch resistance which is mainly required in industrial printing
Vibrant color
• High quality screen printing inks with better light fast pigments delivers 3~5 years of
outdoor life for any kind of applications
• Good ink film and mechanical stability allows to screen print on float glass, ceramic
tiles, metal and many other complicated substrates
• Knowledge and process calibration provides high dimensional stability which is
required for industrial printing like printed circuits, instrumentation for medical
appliances, aerospace, communications etc.
• Screen printing enables us to achieve a degree of flexibility that is unavailable in
other printing process
• In this process film thickness from points of micron to 300 microns and above is
easily achievable
• Wide range of substrates of various thickness, size and shapes can be printed
easily
• Flexibility of short runs to large industrial volumes
• Many kinds of ink are available
• Thick coating is possible. (General stencil: 10-30 microns, Special stencil: more
than 100 microns)
• Thick coating makes colors more vivid, finish more opaque and light fastness better
• As printing pressure is small, it is possible to print on fragile matters
• As the stencil is soft, it is possible to print on hard materials such as glass and
metal as well as soft materials such as paper and fabrics
•
•
•
The stencil is cheap, which is the advantage in case of production of small quantity
Applications : Screen printing process is still considered a 'cottage industry' with a
wrong belief that it is meant for printing small and odd jobs such as visiting cards,
invitation cards and letter heads. But in reality it is not so, One needs to understand
deeply as to what creative wonders screen printing can do.
With phenomenal growth sweeping across India and GDP nudging north, towards the
double-digit realm, application of screen printing process is all set to spread widely by
leap and bounds. Screen printing process is now being used for various substrates in
numerous fields because ink does not adhere in some substrates when printed through
other printing process.
Commercial Applications :
Posters, Billboards, POP, Displays, Stickers, Signs, Flags and many more...
Consumer Products :
Toys, Stationery, Sports goods, Bags, Art (Serigraphy), T-shirts, Cosmetic containers ,
Toiletry containers, Packaging, Wooden products, Glass & ceramics, Plastic Cards,
Credit Cards, Foot wear and many more...
Industrial applications :
Indian Screen Printing scenario
Is there any threat from other printing process?
Each process is more suitable for certain specific applications. Therefore, it is not just
enough for us to understand the technicalities of the print processes, we must also see
the opportunities it can bring through our customers' eyes.
It would be inappropriate if we categorise markets as being digital or screen printing...
We are not anymore “printers”, we are “image makers”, and, the final and sole purpose of
these images, in our world of “visual communication” is to help the customer to sell his
product or anything else he has to promote. With the advancement of technology, the
distinguishing benefits between different processes are diminishing. For eg. computerised
screen printing machines can substantially improve quality and reduce set up costs.
For jobs which need special effects and spot
colours, screen printing could still be the best
option. There is a certain technical limitations to
a perpetual expansion of digital printing
technology, plus a certain relation carefully
hidden between “speed and quality”.
The print industry is fast becoming “multi-
process users” with processors now owning a
wide range of equipments in screen-printing,
offset, digital printing, etc. We can choose most
suited process to fulfil the customers' needs. It
is should not be a question anymore “to kill” screen-printing but, to build an interesting
and profitable combination of “joined forces”.
Market is fast expanding and so is the screen printing. Industry is also expanding.
Simultaneously there is a good scope for industry, provided the technology is properly
used. Screen Printing technology can not be outdated it is unique in itself. There are
certain jobs which cannot be printed through any other process than screen printing. For
some jobs, screen printing has the upper hand. Each print processing technology has its
own specialty. Therefore I see really a good future for screen printing. Considering the
boom in India, screen printing has to grow and it will grow if we work hard for best quality
and be competitive at the same time.
With globalisation of the economy, there is a wide spread consumer boom. There is a
greater need for printed articles in the form of POP materials, billboards, packaging,
garment, textile, industrial, consumer applications and advertising. In short, for Indian
screen printers the future is looking brighter than the moon! At the same time the industry
need to gear up itself by producing a plenty of skilled human resources - the screen
printing technologists.
•
•
•
•
In India less than 1 per cent of all printers have had any recognised training.
99 per cent learned through trial and error.
Screen operators use only 10 per cent of the available technical knowledge or skills
that are essential for quality screen printing.
Estimated no of screen printers in India: more than 90,000
Screen Printing Technology is more alive than ever.
Two processes screen and digital
printing - are complementary to
each other rather than competing
with each other. We are not
anymore “printers”, we are “image
makers”,
Michel Caza FESPA ex-president and member of the Board,
ASPT Chairman and GPSF Vice-president
Why DMI?
The Challenge
DMI offers training programmes,
on-the-hand-experience,
workshops and seminars so that
the participants from the
industry will learn skills that
would otherwise take years at
the shopfloor.
• SCREEN printing technology is getting
updated too fast!
• And your existing knowledge getting
outdated!
• Know more about the screen printing
process and master the trade
• Train your supervisors and operators,
to learn more and earn more!
• Your challenge to increase productivity
and profitability
• Training your marketing personnel to
keep himself updated on the latest
screen printing technology.
• Students from printing institutes desire
to update with the latest technology
The Real Challenge is Lack of Education, Training & Research.
DMI Solution:
FOR WHOM?
The lack of knowledge and training is what separates profitable screen printers from
those who go out of business during the first two years. While most equipment
manufacturers and suppliers give initial training to their customers upon installation of a
new machine, only few would bother to help the customer. Without a superior training, it
is possible that a state of the art technology machine bought by the owner, will not be
exploited to its fullest capacities and capabilities.
The need of the hour therefore is to train/retrain and educate all the technical personnel
at the shopfloor. Only few entrepreneurs undertake research and development while
trying to meet the demands of the customers. The establishment of DMI - Dhirubhai
Mistry Institute for Print Education, Research & Training, is a timely one, feel many
screen printers. DMI is a unique educational institute with a professional approach for the
SCREEN printing. It is a provider of skilled and trained personnel - screen printing
technologists through world class education & training.
DMI is an initiative of Grafica. By virtue of its leadership position in the screen-printing
industry, Grafica acquired superior domain knowledge through technological and market
research, continuous interaction with its valued customers and feedback, participation in
national and international exhibitions for many years. Grafica has made substantial
investments in realising its mission: to partner with its customers and industry associates
in order to provide holistic techno-solutions by setting up DMI for Screen Printing.
DMI seeks co-operation on an on-going basis from Grafica customers, printing institutes
and industry associates, who have a stake in the screen-printing industry. DMI is very
keen and positive in partnering with Grafica customers to undertake the routine
production of their commercial print jobs. Any job from the regular to the most challenging
ones, Grafica will assist its partners realize a larger production, higher turnover ensuring
time bound deliveries that would delight the clients.

Advantage Students Helping the students, a Goodwill gesture
Many printing institutes in India are unable to impart effective knowledge through
advanced technical know-how except 'touching' little on the subject. The core aim of DMI
is to impart modern and sophisticated training covering all the aspects of screen-printing.
An overview of Course contents
During this period students would be trained in commercial jobs under strict supervision
and able guidance of DMI instructors. DMI would demonstrate the full potential of the
screen-printing process. DMI will undertake toughest of the tough jobs.
DMI invites applications from students for its structured syllabus and contemporary
curriculum. Final year students from various Printing Institutes are also invited to DMI.
DMI plays the role of a self-supporting catalyst - to transform the screen-printing process
which till now is seen in the light of a cottage industry. DMI will offer crash course to its
alumni (ex-students) who can periodically sign-up for refresher programmes.
Employment opportunity: If the printer is satisfied and if the students wish, they
(students) can get absorbed as a permanent employee.
Course Duration
The length of most training programmes would be between 2-3 months having a 8-hour
routine on a weekly basis. A cycle of 6 days will involve 4 days practical training on in line-
jobs; 1 day industrial visit to screen printing press and 1 day theory and revision.
Industrial visits
Students will be sent to various screen printing press periodically so that they get
exposure to the real actions taking place in the screen printing. This way, the students also
get an opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs and technical experts.
Grafica customers can come forward to encourage the young DMI students for the
growth and benefit of our industry by inviting them for plant visits.

Since such trained students will be required to undergo a year's apprenticeship in a
SCREEN printing press, DMI would send these trained students to its customers ONLY as
part of Grafica's commitment to help its customers. The advantage for Grafica Customers
is that they can absorb such highly trained young screen printing technologists in their
own press.
Further, customers can also periodically
depute their personnel to the Institute for
training and refresher programmes under
the able guidance of specialists and
experts from Grafica who are highly skilled
in screen printing.

AN APPEAL FOR A CAUSE
Grafica took up the initiative to fulfill the dream of late Shri Dhirubhai Mistry,
founder of Grafica Group of Companies to set up DMI by putting in enormous
amount of time, effort, resources. Grafica, by virtue of its leadership position in
the screen-printing industry has obtained superior domain knowledge. Now,
these treasures of knowledge would be made available to students and Grafica
customers.
The students who are trained at DMI would undertake printing work as part of
their project for six months. These trainees will be undergoing one year's
apprenticeship at Grafica's customers' press. The advantage for Grafica
customers is that they can absorb such highly trained students in their press who
are young and promising 'screen print technologists'.
In order to take DMI further into a greater heights, it would constantly need
support from screen printers, manufacturers and suppliers of raw materials for
screen printing.
We request you to assign some of the small and big printing jobs so that the
students get enough practical to experience and learn a lot along with the theory
on an ongoing basis. This way customers get their print job done at DMI at a
bear minimum cost. These jobs will be executed under the strict supervision and
able guidance of DMI faculties and technical experts from Grafica.
To support further for the cause, we are pleased to inform you that the
students at DMI would also undertake printing job of greetings cards,
gift articles, calendars, diaries, at a nominal charges. You as
entrepreneurs can help DMI by placing orders for your annual
requirement of these articles or divert your valued customers' orders for
these give away requirements.
This is not the end but just a beginning. DMI has a long way to go. Come
forward and help for a cause. This is an APPEAL, close to your heart.
