Ignite: Fan the Flame {Mark Greenroy} INTRODUCTION When we think about the word “ignite” many things come into our minds. Words like fire, spark, momentum, and even passion are just some of the words that we associate with “ignite”. Fire is probably the most common of them all. Fire can ignite very quickly. When I was a sophomore in high school I went camping with some friends, and while getting the campfire built up for cooking, my shorts caught on fire! Luckily the old adage, “Stop, Drop, and Roll” does actually work, but I was forever reminded of how quickly clothes could ignite! As Christians the idea of igniting oneself has nothing to do with being literally on fire, but rather being empowered by the Holy Spirit to do amazing things. Most of us don’t see ourselves as doing “amazing” things in life, but perhaps that is just because we have neglected God’s power and opportunities in our lives to do amazing things. We must redefine what “amazing” looks like, and realize that all of us were formed by an amazing God that has empowered us to do amazing works. It is our job to fan the flame of His power, love, and self-discipline. God has given to us, so that we can give to others. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Can anyone share a story about a close encounter with fire? 2. Read 2 Timothy 1:6-8 - Why do you think that Paul uses the imagery of “fanning the flame” when talking to Timothy about using his God-given gifts? 3. Since “fanning the flame” is active, what kind of actions help spread God’s love and what action put out God’s fire?

Ignite: Fan the Flame{Mark Greenroy}

INTRODUCTIONWhen we think about the word “ignite” many things come into our minds.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1.

4. Why does having God-given gifts make us responsible to use them? How does obedience play a factor in “fanning the flame?”

5. How do the gifts of God override any fear, worry, and doubt that we might have?

6. How are we given power, love, and self-discipline? What are the purposes of these gifts?

7. How can we exercise these gifts for the benefit of others?

NEXT STEPFor next lesson, think about (possibly write) your personal story. Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation that you can share with your group.
