1 www.upperkennetnews.co.uk Wherever we are on our spiritual journey we all have moments when we feel prompted to raise our eyes and hearts and say a huge resounding ‘thank you’ to the Author and Source of Life some of us relate to as God. This summer has been full of them, though not all our acts of thanksgiving have been particularly joyful as we have said ‘farewell for now’ to key members of our community at church or crematorium or woodland burial site. However, the incredible spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics and achievement of our athletes, the work of the armed forces and volunteers and the sheer good humour and joy that permeated the games were a real cause for thanksgiving, as was the Jubilee. But it got me wondering about the whole business of being thankful so I wrote an open letter to God . Perhaps it may resonate with you... I haven’t said thank you today. I didn’t say it yesterday. Or last week. Or last... no -maybe I did actually say thank you last month. ‘Twas a short prayer I must admit - but those two words were said with such feeling I am sure they were worth more than a long prayer full of flowery embellishments. But I haven’t said thank you today. I am so busy complaining about all the woes in my life I haven’t even once thought of a blessing – my friend who phoned me, the neighbour who watered my beans when I was away, the wicked twinkle in the eye of our Queen as she ‘dropped in’ with Mr Bond, that lovely unexpected picnic with the Sheps from Shropshire. I have been so busy pestering you to know ‘what next for the Benefice’ that I forget to smile at you for the ‘here and now’, just today, this place, these people with me. I have been so busy railing at you for not reaching down and literally physically stopping things from happening, like the killing in Syria, the flooded farmland, my friend’s illness, that I have forgotten to thank you for knowing first- hand what it is like to suffer, to watch suffering. And I most definitely forget to thank you for the compassion, comfort and consolation you have enabled us to offer to those who are in pain and sorrow. I suspect you have only been thanked occasionally for the ultimate healing of death, though most of us have given you earache about losing people, or indeed about the length of time it is taking someone to die. I apologise in advance, God, for the times in the future I will do THAT very thing! And I still haven’t said thank you today. For the food of breakfast, the shelter of home, the knowledge that I am loved and can love in return, the anticipation of Phil’s homecoming; for the joy of tiredness after a day well spent, for the aches that show I am still alive, and the ones that draw me into sympathy with others! I wonder what you’d do if we returned, like the leper, and just this once turned our bag of constant asks into ‘Thank you? Would your jaw drop? Would your heart be filled with love and joy at the unexpected? Well... my thank you is that you love us anyway, and continue to care for us, despite our ingratitude and our neglect of you, our doubts, our antipathy, our apathy. So thank you. Would you like to join a small informal group who are interested in singing some of the less well known carols? We plan to sing at the Carol Service on Sunday 16th December in West Overton Church at 6pm. We hope to be able to sing in 4 parts and so need a whole range of voices. Our first rehearsals will be on Tuesday 11th and Tuesday 25th September at West Overton Church with a view to having fewer rehearsals when we all start getting busy in December. If you are interested in being part of this group please contact Danela on 861625 - even if you can't manage these initial dates.

Wild About The Valley Aug 17th 2012 Back at the beginning of June, two little girls in Stanton St Bernard found a tiny Mallard duckling running up and down the road in the village, they caught it and took it to a lady in the village who got in touch with me. Consequently I finished up with the duckling, it was about 2 days old, I fed it with mashed up hard boiled egg for a week then transferred to chick crumbs, made a big wire netting run on my lawn but had to catch it every night and put it in a cope, there are two other ducks that run the farmyard and they took an interest in the little one, use to duck talk each other, eventually about a fortnight ago I decided to release the duckling from its pen (its well feathered by now) to see what would happen, glad to say all went well and it wasn’t long before it seemed the duckling to change and now the other two ducks follow it about, another couple of weeks and it should be flying, whether it will stay here remains to be seen. Lockeridge:- July 14th - 14 Swifts, July 25th - 25 Swifts and by August 2nd only 7 with being seen since. July 26th two Red Kites over the centre of the village and there has been plenty of sighting since over W. Overton and E. Kennett. Barn Owl over Stanley Wood, Fyfield early Aug. A Barn Owl successfully reared two young locally and have been tagged by the B.T.O. West Kennett:- A Cuckoo was seen Aug 5th on the Old Gun Road heading south and a young one was reported being fed by other birds at West Overton late July. Swallow/House Martin have done well in the stable yard at E. Kennett I counted 37 on the electric wires Aug 10th. Derek Hartshorn 861238

News From The Tower

Ringing Times: 2nd & 9th September, 9.30 -10.00 am. 23rd & 30th September, 5.30 - 6.00 pm. Practice Night: Tuesdays, 7.30 - 9.00 pm. Peal attempt: 13th September, starting at 10.30am. Training: 22nd September, 10.00 – 12 noon. Visiting ringers: 27th September, 10.45 – 11.30am.

Five Avebury ringers rang for the opening of the Olympic Games on the 27th July, 2012; they were Michele and Adam Lomas, Brian Vickers, David and Mary Davidge. We all received certificates to keep as a memento. One of our Tuesday ringers, Jane Ridgwell from Calne, was interviewed on the Wiltshire radio about the Olympic ringing, at St. Mary’s, where 18 people took part. It would be good if the publicity for the Olympic ringing gained some new recruits to the art.

The 2nd Jubilee Peal attempt, on the 28th July, sadly failed after an hour when two ringers made a mistake in the method which meant that the peal wouldn’t have come into rounds, as it should have, at the end of the 5,000 plus changes. This was disappointing for them and for us, but it can only take the loss of concentration for a second and it is all over, as method ringers know only too well.

An American visitor to Avebury filmed the ringing at our practice night on the 31st July and interviewed Kathryn Miller and Dave about bell ringing. He plans to use the recording on Thailand TV. He was also filmed (by ringer Andy Miller) chiming a bell, after they had been safely rung down.

The August Branch meeting was at Compton Bassett and with no priest available, the service was led by David Davidge.

There will be a Full Peal attempt on Thursday, 13th September, 2012, starting at 10.30 am.

Avebury WI Just a Reminder! Just a reminder that the Avebury and District W.I are

beginning their Autumn programme on Thursday the 13th of September at 7.30pm in Avebury Social Centre. It should be a very interesting evening as Jan and Andrew Williamson are talking about their recent trip to Iran and their personalised view of this country and its culture.

The competition is a Middle Eastern item, or a dahlia bloom. There is also a magazine and book swap.

If you are new to the area or would like to meet a friendly, chatty group of women with many and varied interests, come along as a visitor to a meeting and try us out. We can promise you a warm welcome and would hope to dispel any negative preconceptions about the ‘’Women’s Institute’’!!

Avebury Rainbow Guides Last term the Rainbows visited Avebury Manor and had a wonderful afternoon enjoying the gardens and admiring the new sculptures. They completed their Diamond Jubilee badge by choosing items to pack a royal suitcase. They all participated in a mini Olympics and medals were presented. They finished the term with swimming in the rain which they found great fun while their poor parents huddled under umbrellas watching. All were revived with tea afterwards. We start again next term on Tuesday 18th September. If your daughter is 5 or 6 years old and would like to be a Rainbow, we meet on Tuesdays after school until 4.30 in Avebury Social Centre. Recruiting New Recorders Article Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records

Centre (WSBRC) In a county such as ours we are fortunate to be surrounded by a great diversity of wildlife, but all too often we take for granted that it can survive all the pressures we put it under. Recording wildlife is an essential tool which helps organisations and individuals make informed decisions on how they carry out activities which might affect our environment. We are lucky to have a network of expert species recorders who submit records to the WSBRC and allow us to make them widely available ensuring decision makers have access to this information. Local people can help us by recording what they see in their own local environments. Recording is a pastime which can be enjoyed by anyone, at any age, with as little as a pencil, paper, a bit of patience and a willingness to learn. It does take time and patience to develop any skill and expertise as a naturalist is no different. Our experts may well have discovered a love for the natural environment at a young age, but their passion for their subject often developed later. We need to actively support and recruit the new generations of recorders to help them build up their skills and retain this expertise. Recording is in many ways easier now than it’s ever been with more resources available to a budding recorder to get started and greater access to identification tools than before. Nothing beats practical experience in the field though. It can be daunting at first, but attending an identification course or a wildlife walk is a good start. Joining a recording group or society can provide much needed support and mentorship as skills develop.

See the WSBRC website (www.wsbrc.org.uk) for more information on getting started. Purgle Linham, WSBRC Biological Recorder, 31st May 2011

Please contact the club for further information about the league and cup campaigns for the U10s and U15s .

Cabbage Sunday 2012 For anyone new to the area, Cabbage Sunday is a charity auction. It raises funds for local charities and the items sold are not of particularly high value so it won’t “ break the bank” so do please come along. Last year, despite the “economic climate” you helped us to raise just over £1,000 so a big thank you to everyone involved in the event whether buying or donating. We couldn’t do it without you, Thank You. This year the event will again be at The New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton , where there will be ample parking. September 30th is the

day to mark in your diary and the auction will start at 12.30pm with items accepted before the day or on the day from 11.00am. Please contact either Nigel Fielder 01672 539317 or Steve and Thelma Fulford 01672 539308. There will be a marquee as well as hot dogs and burgers for sale on the day, the proceeds from which will be added to the Cabbage Sunday fund. There will also be the traditional raffles for drinks and groceries. Our chosen charities this year are Wiltshire Blind Association; Prospect Hospice and Avebury and District over 60s. Whilst your support on the day is invaluable we also need your help in providing donations. Hopefully this will be garden produce, probably a few cabbages included, as well as ploughman’s lunches; home made pickles, preserves and wines; unwanted gifts; toys and the very popular home made cakes which are always in demand. We would be delighted to receive bags of apples, boxes of pears and other fruits. Donations towards the “Booze Hamper” would be very welcome. So please don’t forget 30th September at The New Inn, Winterbourne Monkton . We really do look forward to meeting you and Thank You.

The Kennet Vale Junior Table Tennis Club operates out of Kennet Valley Hall in Lockeridge and meet on Tuesday nights 17.45– 19.00 between September and April Due to some of our long term members moving on to College and Uni`, we can now accept some new recruits. Ideal age is about 9 – 10 but in some cases we can accept younger or older children. The purpose of our club is to introduce children to this most enjoyable sport. Enjoyment is the main thing although many of our past members have achieved quite high standards. Success normally comes from applying a disciplined approach to learning the sport and we do expect a reasonable commitment to the learning process. If you would like to join us this coming September please contact either Colin 861672, or Brian 861513. Numbers will be limited so it will be “first come first served”

Kennet Valley 60+ A meeting of the Kennet Valley 60+ Club took place in the Kennet Valley Hall on Thursday, 16 August. Sylvia gave out several notices. The money for the mystery tour needed to be paid that today. Next year's holiday will be in North Wales from the 22 - 26 April, please let a member of the committee know if you are interested in going. As the AGM will be held at our next meeting on the 20 September, Sylvia has intimated that she would be standing down as Chairman of the committee and that the ladies who have worked so hard making the teas would appreciate others taking over. Would members of the club please put themselves forward to stand as Committee Members for all of the posts, ie Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, etc., plus anyone who would like to take over the task of making the teas. The entertainment was provided by Jeanette and Mike of the Melksham Pearlies. It was a marvellous sing-a-long afternoon. They were beautifully dressed as pearly King and Queen with some great props for every song. They got all us oldies singing along and I am sure we all felt much happier for it. We hope they will come back soon. The afternoon closed with tea and cakes and a raffle

Marlborough Embroiderers Guild

Our Branch had 45 members, family & friends on the coach for this year's day out to Redditch. Our first stop was at the Forge Mill Needle Museum where, on arrival, we were welcomed with coffee and cake. We were then taken on a guided tour of the Mill and told some interesting and fascinating stories of how needles were made in Victorian times and an opportunity to visit the shop. The Museum had a large collection of needles on display and the 'Last Samurai' exhibition was also being shown.

Our coach then took us on to the Jinny Ring Craft Centre where we were able to have lunch and view the working craft units, gift shop and beautiful gardens which also provided a relaxed area to sit and watch the ducks on the pond.

Our next meeting will be held on September 3rd at 2 pm at Kennet Valley Hall in Lockeridge. It is an open meeting so all are welcome and our speaker is Isobel Hall who will talk on Mixed Media & Stitch. For more details about the Guild call Shirley Watson on 01793 525517

Lockeridge September 9th. SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN Stuffy government scientist Fred is asked by an Arab Sheik to do the seemingly impossible - introduce British salmon to the Yemen. Despite considerable trepidation, Fred is finally won over by the charismatic Arab, who reveals that fishing brings him closer to God. Fred also begins to fall for the Sheik's beautiful legal representative Harriet; and so he rises to the eccentric challenge, casting off his English reserve on a transformative journey of self discovery and late blooming love. Adapted from Paul Torday’s hit novel (much featured on Radio 4) and with a dream cast including Kristin Scott-Thomas, Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. October 14th. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL A group of British retirees decide to "outsource" their retirement to seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. A dream cast: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Tom Wilkinson and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel. This is a film which people will want to see again. December 9th. THE ARTIST Oscar winner of Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director. A silent film in black and white set in 1927 at the end of the silent era. As silent movie star George Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he meets Peppy Miller, a young dancer set for a big break. Everything about this film is exceptional. The acting is top-notch, the story is intriguing, and despite being black and white, the film is visually appealing.”

UKN Advice Tip 7 Kids going back to school in September? Is there any help available for things like buying school uniforms? You should first speak with the headteacher of the school. Many schools offer financial help and/or a second hand uniform scheme or they may be able to suggest other options. Help may also be available from a trust fund or charity. Wiltshire Council doesn’t provide a uniform grant scheme but the Charities Information Bureau South and West have put together some information about charities that may be able to help you (http://www.cibsouthandwest.org.uk/ready-to-go_packs_results.php?id=22) Other suggestions you can make to your child’s school for how to keep costs fair and low could include:

Making sure uniform is available from a range of outlets Providing sew-on or iron-on badges that can be put on plain clothing Encourage second hand uniform sales or swap schemes Providing budgets for the year in September so parents can plan ahead.

If you feel your child’s school isn’t doing enough to keep uniform costs down, raise the issue with the school management team and if you’re not happy with the response, approach the school’s governing body. They should have a complaints procedure in place which will deal with issues such as complaints about uniform policies. The school may have an exclusive contract with a uniform supplier which prevents you from buying similar ‘off the peg’ items at a cheaper rate; if so, you can ask them to review this and if they refuse to change this policy then they may be subject to enforcement action by the Office of Fair Trading: www.oft.gov.uk Finally if excessive school costs are really affecting your decision to send your child to a particular school then you can raise the matter with the Schools Adjudicator: www.schoolsadjudicator.gov.uk For free independent and confidential advice or inf ormation on this or other matters contact the CAB advice lin e on: 0844 375 2775 (from a landline) or 0300 456 8375 (from a mobile) or visit our website: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk Information supplied by Wiltshire Citizens Advice Charity Registration Number: 1062219 http://www.cabwiltshire.org.uk
