A Vision for the Year 20-20
Is there life in HEP after LHC/LC?
R. Sekhar ChivukulaMichigan State University
Goals of High-Energy Physics• What do we do?
– We “explore the frontiers of matter, energy, space and time.”
• How do we do it? – By probing matter at the shortest
accessible distance scales, and by examining matter with the highest possible precision.
Precision is not Sufficient!
A Vision for HEP in 2020• HEP should be a vibrant field of inquiry,• and must have international facilities to
both– examine matter with the highest possible precision
and– probe it at the shortest possible distance scales.
Distance scale to be probed: (10 TeV)-1
VLHC
Prospects and Challenges
• Physics at 10 TeV
• Building* the VLHC
• Detectors* at the VLHC
• Image of HEP
• Resources for HEP
• How do we get from here to there?
*See talks by Peter Limon, Dmitri Denisov, Jay Hauser, Mike Albrow, Nikolai Mokhov…
Physics at 10 TeV• Possible Views from (1 TeV)-1
– SUSY– Strong Dynamics/Technicolor– Composite/Little Higgs– Extra Dimensions

SUSY
What breaks SUSY softly? What are the masses of the superpartners?
cf. talk by Ian Hinchliffe
“Low-Scale” SUSY Breaking Messengers could appear at 10 TeV
Strong Dynamics/Technicolor
cf. talk by Ken Lane
We know too much … this simplest theory is ruled out!
The LHC is not sufficient…

Composite/Little Higgs

Extra Dimensions
cf. talk by Gian Giudice
As inspired by AdS/CFT conjecture: a weakly coupled QFT in this space dual to one in 4-d coupled to a large-N strongly-coupled conformal field theory….

Resources for US HEP
How do we get there from here?
• Successfully complete Tevatron Run II andinitial phase of LHC physics program
• Articulate LHC (luminosity?) upgrade program
• Build an International Linear Collider – “on-time and on-budget”
and concurrently…• Continue R&D for VLHC and Detectors
• Repair Image of HEP in US and World• Maintain critical mass of students and postdocs• Complete the physics case for VLHC• Learn how to build the accelerator and detectors
