Experiencing the Exodus of Egypt

The Hagadah tells us that the truest form of recalling the Exodus of Egypt in the Passover story is to relive the experience to the best of our abilities. That’s exactly what the Barbara & Douglas Bloom Matzah Factory at the JCC in West Bloomfield aims to accomplish. This week, our ECC students visited the factory and heard the Passover story from none other than “Moshe” and “Pharaoh” themselves. The students then created a Kriyat Yam Suf project that can be presented at their own family Seder and mixed and kneaded their very own Matzah. Of course, our students remembered that the Matzah must be mixed, kneaded, baked and prepared all within 18 minutes in order to be Kosher. Thank you to our parent volunteers and chaperones and to all the volunteers at the Matzah Factory who make this yearly trip a true favorite.

Battle of

the Books

Congratulations to the numerous Farber

Hebrew Day School Battle of the Books

Middle School Chumash Presentations

Mrs. Stein’s 7th and 8th Grade Boys’ Chumash class combined Judaic studies with classroom technology when they were asked to create presentations on the Mitzvot they learned in Vayikra, Chapters 19-26. The boys each chose a Mitzvah to study and researched a contemporary issue relating to that Mitzah that can be applicable to their lives today. The presentations were created in Google slides or Prezi and were presented via classroom smartboards. Some topics included (1) The Torah tells us not to swear in G-d’s name. Are you allowed to swear in a court of law if you are going to be telling the truth? (2) We are told to be honest in weights and measures. How does that apply to business and marking up items to make a profit? (3) Don't stand by on your friends’ blood. What if such a scenario arises on Shabbat? How far does one take this concept? Can one break Shabbat to drive someone to the hospital?

Akiva Archives: Preserving our History

Oftentimes we find ourselves in the following predicament: An amazing opportunity to do a Mitzvah arises which requires certain talents. You know you posses the talent, but you hesitate in fear of making a mistake. This quandary rages inside of you and many times, you are unsure how to proceed. Perhaps the Pesukim in this Parsha can provide guidance on such a situation: After enumerating all of the vessels, as well as the oils that would be needed for the Mishkan, the Pasuk says: ויבאו כל איש אשר נשאו לבו וכל אשר נדבה רוחו..."”

Every man whose heart inspired him came, and everyone whose spirit motivated him...” In his commentary, the Ramban asks how all of the intricate tapestries were made if none of the Jewish people had any prior training? They had left Egypt as slaves never having gone to school to learn how to perform these types of weaves. So how were they able to suddenly create these amazing works of art? He explains that many of the Jewish people wanted to be a part of the building of the Mishkan.

They felt within themselves they had the talent to perform and create these amazing works of art. When they desired to pursue the task, Hashem gave them the Siata Dishmaya (heavenly help) to accomplish this feat. Despite their hesitation, they were able to accomplish their goal. Once they were determined to pursue the work, Hashem granted them assistance. When we find ourselves in a situation where we want to do a Mitzvah, but are afraid of failure, we should recall this idea of the Jews in the desert. Unlike them, we have the opportunity to receive the training we need to perform Mitzvot. Hashem is always present to help us if we initiate the effort. When we make the decision to perform a Mitzvah, we must know that Hashem is with us and that that we can accomplish anything! Shabbat Shalom!

Shortly before our move from the old building, a committee of Farber Hebrew Day School—Yeshivat Akiva volunteers was formed to help preserve Akiva archival items. The committee is sifting through photographs, yearbooks, dinner journals, sports apparel, curriculum documents and other meaningful memorabilia from the past five decades of our school’s history. With assistance from Robbie Terman, chief archivist at the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives, an affiliate of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, certain archive items that will not remain in our school building will be placed in in either The Max M. Fisher Jewish Federation Building or the Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs, accessible to view at anytime. The Farber Hebrew Day School—Yeshivat Akiva family wishes a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers thus far; Sherri Weil, Julie Sherizen, Susie Kresch, Michal Korman, Sandy Eisenberg, Sarah Kornblum, Randy Zwick, Carolyn Kelman and Cheryl Jerusalem for their important work in preserving our school’s rich history. If you are interested in volunteering for this meaningful task, please contact Cheryl Jerusalem at [email protected].

This week, our Kindergarten had their celebratory pizza party sponsored by PTO for collecting not only the most amount of Box Tops in the ECC, but also the most amount in the school. They were so excited for their party and for the cinnamon sticks they enjoyed for collecting the most Box Tops! We also spoke about the value of a Box Top (10 cents) and how much was raised for the school from everyone -- over $250! Keep up the good work and don't forget, while cleaning for Pesach to look out for Box Tops before throwing anything out!

Congratulations to our Box Tops

Winners!
