We look forward to seeing you again in July, where you can continue to learn and develop.

The first event on the calendar for the James Hird Academy in 2011

was the Game Day Experience at the round 3 game against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium. Twelve boys attended the game along with many of their parents, including former players Michael Long, Chris Daniher and Neville Fields. The boys watched the game and then made their way down to the changerooms following the fantastic win. The next day, the boys met at Windy Hill to participate in the first ‘2 day football camp’ of the year, where Jordan Williams (son of Darren, 109

games), Tom Wallis (son of Dean, 127 games) and Harvey and Callum Daniher (sons of Chris, 124 games) were formally inducted into the Academy.

Throughout the two days, the boys were provided an insight into the training and preparation required at AFL level. They were put through skills testing and game education sessions with Dean Wallis, Brendan McCartney and Hayden Skipworth, observed training sessions with Merv Keane, undertook a goal setting exercise and had a fitness Q&A session with Stuart Cormack. A very special

thanks to all those involved with delivering these sessions, your contribution was invaluable to the experience.

A video with highlights from the day can be found at http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/a/Sons-of-guns-attend-James-Hird-Academy/8098

Attendees: Jett Bewick, Kieran Brennan, Jedd Clothier, Callum Daniher, Harvey Daniher, Tom Fields, Jake Long, Jydon Neagle, Matthew Neagle, Nick Ryan, Daniel Thompson, Oliver Tweeddale, Todd Vander Haar, Tom Wallis, Jordan Williams.

Our inaugural Baby Bombers event was a Game Day Experience at

the round 7 game between Essendon and the Gold Coast at Etihad Stadium. The boys were given the opportunity to wear their James Hird Academy attire and form a guard of honour as the team ran through the banner, and then after the game, head down to the rooms where they were able to obtain a few autographs from their heroes. No doubt a highlight for all the boys!

The day also provided an opportunity for many ex-players and parents to get together, and it was great to see

so many of them at the game and in the changerooms afterwards.

Attendees: Kurtis Barnard, Luke Barnard, Noah Caracella, Darcy Denham, Will Hamilton, Joshua Misiti, Mara Lovett-Murray, Jaxon Neagle, Aidan Ramanauskas, Lucas Ramanauskas.

Coaches of children should remember that:

• children’s sport should be FUN!

• children need lots of opportunities for unstructured play, a broad range of activities, and the opportunity for creativity

• early sports specialisation is not recommended for young children

• the social aspects of sport are highly valued by children

• coaches should focus on skill development and individual improvement, rather than winning as the outcome

• all children deserve time and attention, not just the most talented

Children’s characteristics
