A Word from the DeanIn April 2015, Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship responded to the global call for business schools and academic associations to advance corporate social responsibility worldwide, by committing to adhere to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Initially introduced by a group of scholars and leading academic organizations at the UN Global Compact Leaders’ Summit, PRME provides a framework to guide the university’s efforts to incorporate corporate citizenship and sustainability into its curriculum and research.

As current members of the Broward County community and future leaders of business communities within Florida and around the world, PRME is critical in helping mold our students with a keen sense of responsibility in these key areas.

I am proud of this important initiative that we have taken to move into the future with a focus on sustainability.

With this commitment to PRME, the Huizenga College of Business was honored to join nearly 600 other signatories, universities and business schools from around the world.

With this first report describing our willingness and efforts for corporate citizenship and sustainability in all areas of our college, we wish to demonstrate the college’s willingness to follow six principles which focus on purpose, values, learning methods, research, partnership and dialog.

It is our strong desire that future annual reports will show how deeply we are involved and the leadership that we are taking in South Florida to open the path towards collaborations with private, public and not for profit organizations towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Nova Southeastern University H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship at a glanceSince its inception, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has been committed to its impact on the community. When George Hanbury, Ph.D., became NSU’s President and CEO, this focus intensified as part of our key Core Values and Vision 2020.

Under President Hanbury’s direction, NSU has taken its impact on neighbors and support for the surrounding community very seriously. Clinical programs including Starting Right and Unicorn Children’s Clinic are the two newest programs providing service to children with autism. There are a number of groups and supportive networks such as culture and conflict groups, Mi Casa Research Group and the social justice roundtable. Nova Southeastern University’s innovative chiller plant, which provides air conditioning to a large majority of the main campus, serves as a model of energy efficiency. As the third largest in the country, engineers and facility managers can often be seen touring the plant to get a closer look. In addition, energy efficiency and sustainability were key factors in the design and construction of the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center, located on oceanfront property in Dania Beach. The home of internationally-acclaimed research efforts, the center received Silver LEED certification in 2013. NSU’s sustainability focus also extends throughout the university through the efforts of professors, researchers and student groups such as UNICEF and the Green Sharks.

In January 2015, as part of its journey towards AACSB accreditation, the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship hired two Scholars in Residence to develop cross-disciplinary efforts with colleagues and students to enhance and leverage research, education and program development in social/environmental/economic sustainability.

Less than 15 months later, a lot has been achieved, one being the creation of the first NSU Collaborative Team for Sustainability. We are proud to have faculty from nine NSU colleges involved as well as librarians, staff from Facilities Management, students’ organizations, and Broward County representatives. Furthermore, The Green Sharks Student Association has been formed, we have presented at conferences and been involved in several collaborative research initiatives. Additionally, these 15 months have unveiled so many programs, courses, and initiatives campus wide that exist for social and environmental innovation.

Nova Southeastern University’s MissionThe mission of Nova Southeastern University, a private, not-for-profit institution, is to offer a diverse array of innovative academic programs that complement on-campus educational opportunities, and resources with accessible distance learning programs to foster academic excellence, intellectual inquiry, leadership, research, and commitment to community through engagement of students and faculty members in a dynamic, life-long learning environment.

Nova Southeastern University visionBy 2020, through excellence and innovations in teaching, research, service, and learning, Nova Southeastern University will be recognized by accrediting agencies, the academic community, and the general public as a premier, private, not-for-profit university of quality and distinction that engages all students and produces alumni who serve with integrity in their lives, fields of study, and resulting careers.

The university possesses a recognized reputation for quality using personal relationships and appropriate technology to provide superior real-world learning experiences for students in a manner that allows education to be an integral part of their lives.

PhilosophyWe can only realize our vision if all faculty and staff of the HCBE, with the support of our other stakeholders, are dedicated to innovation in courses, curricula, delivery methods, and services to students according to the students’ needs.

The success of the HCBE is contingent upon the ability of our faculty, staff, and students to apply newly acquired knowledge to create value in their respective business, academic, government, and nonprofit organizations in particular, and society as a whole.

Principle 1: Purpose We will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.

January 19, 2016 - In response to the United Nations Climate Negotiations in Paris, NSU signed the American Campus’s Act on Climate Pledge on Dec. 16 to transition to low-carbon energy and to enhance sustainable practices on campus.

According to whitehouse.gov, the official pledge states that the institution signing the agreement wants a comprehensive and ambitious agreement to stem from the climate negotiations.

It reads, “We recognize the urgent need to act now to avoid irreversible costs to our global community’s economic prosperity and public health and are optimistic that world leaders will reach an agreement to secure a transition to a low carbon future.”

Jacqueline Travisano, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, expressed in an official letter that as an extension of NSU Vision 2020, the university will educate students and the local community about renewable resources and low-carbon footprints.

Travisano said NSU is known for leading the way with energy conservation, water usage reduction, waste stream diversion and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

“This particular pledge compliments our efforts, and I hope it will encourage more student engagement as we work together as a community to steward our environment for the future,” she said.

The pledge was brought to the attention of the Office of the President after Green Sharks—Students for Sustainability President, Cassilly Lobaugh, junior environmental studies major, approached the office about the opportunity. Lobaugh found out about the pledge while interning at Broward County’s Office of Energy and Sustainability.

Lobaugh said that signing the pledge makes NSU nationally-recognized and holds the university accountable for its actions, makes people aware of its initiatives and educates about what sustainability is.

“A lot of people don’t know what sustainability is, and they don’t really understand it,” she said. “I think that education is really important. Not just for third-world countries who are really going to be affected by climate change, but also big countries and people like you and I who have an impact.”

More than 300 colleges and universities throughout more than 40 states signed ACACP. It was created to gather support to get global leaders to make environmental changes at the United Nations COP21 climate negotiations that took place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11 in Paris, which became the setting for the first global climate deal.

The international agreement aims to reduce emissions and stated that governments will reconvene every five years to update goals, stay in continuous contact and provide international support for climate adaptation.

Travisano said that the pledge reinforces and highlights some of NSU’s efforts to be a more sustainable, green campus and that it is even more special because it was learned about after a student leader recognized the opportunity.

“The campus, as a whole, benefits by having more students actively involved in green initiatives and assisting in the implementation of sustainability plans because it creates a sense of campus ownership and pride,” she said.

Jessica Brumley, Vice President of Facilities Management, agreed with Travisano and said that she believes NSU’s students have innovative and fresh ideas.

“These ideas are invaluable and support NSU’s core values,” she said. “In particular, those of being student-centered, innovation and community involvement.”

The White House initiated a generic pledge for applicants to format, so Lobaugh worked with Travisano to write an NSU-specific pledge that included bullet points of sustainable initiatives the university has made, including continuing to improve the single stream recycling program and develop a program to reduce landscape waste recycling, construction material recycling and used furniture redistribution.

Future plans include connecting additional buildings, such as the Family Center and the Center of Collaborative Research to the Lafferty Energy Plant and striving to make the CCR and Noel P. Brown Facility LEED-certified.

“Climate change is real, and it’s affecting us right now. We, in South Florida, are already experiencing the effects of sea level rise… It’s our responsibility to make sure we take care of our one and only home,” Lobaugh said. “There are little things that everyone can do that will make an impact. If everyone does something, that’s when we’ll start to see a big difference.”

For more information on the pledge, visit whitehouse.gov. To see the full agreement from the Paris negotiations, visit unfccc.int.

Sustainability initiatives currently in place at NSU include:

Using the Lafferty Energy Plant to cool NSU buildings by producing ice at “off-peak” times, as designated by Florida Power and Light

The Green Driver Program, which includes 107 vehicles that monitor speed, acceleration and idle time

The Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center has secured a silver rating by Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)

Utilization of green cleaning products In 2015, the single stream recycling program diverted over 165 tons of trash from the landfill All residence halls shower heads, excluding Rolling Hills Graduate Residence Halls, are low-flow Automated building control systems for energy conservation A partnership with the Town of Davie to use reclaimed water for landscaping irrigation Use of native landscape to reduce water usage

Principle 2: ValuesWe will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact.

HCBE curriculaAt the HCBE faculty members have integrated principle 2 in their research and lectures. (See Appendix 1 for a complete list of courses and details).

The Accounting Department created and offered its first Sustainability Accounting course as a Special Topics offering to undergraduate students during the winter 2016 term. In addition, professors teaching Principles of Financial Accounting, Principles of Managerial Accounting, Cost Accounting, and Intermediate 1 & 2 have worked to integrate sustainability accounting and reporting issues into these courses through class discussions, case studies and other projects. Several faculty have been collaborating on sustainability accounting-related research projects. Two Accounting faculty have passed the level 1 certification of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board's new credential and are working for level 2 completion (full FSA certification) now. Accounting Faculty also presented to the Florida Association of Accounting Educators at its 2016 annual meeting on the topic of how Accounting Educators may integrate sustainability topics throughout existing Accounting curricula. And, one of the Accounting

Principle 3: MethodWe will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership.

Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship prides itself in having faculty members with real world experience and committed to teaching and an up-to-date curriculum.

Ethics, responsible management & sustainability integrated in several coursesEthics has always been part of our curricula. More recently we have introduced specific components in corporate governance, private and public organizations and sustainability, responsible management and leadership, the triple bottom line.

We are pleased to have successfully integrated responsible management education principles in all disciplines. Each department has at least one faculty member engaged in transforming his/her curricula to embed PRME principles and values.

For more details (courses listed) please refer to Appendix 1.

HCBE Graduate orientation dayHCBE graduates go through an orientation day where they will have the opportunity to learn more about the school’s values, meet their fellow classmates, work in team to solve a team challenge and learn about academic research resources, databases and how to access it.

This event takes place 3 times a year for every new cohort. The day starts with a warm welcome from our dean, followed by an introduction given by Dr. Frank Cavico, professor of Law and Ethics. Dr. F. Cavico explains at length how relevant sustainability, ethics and corporate social responsibility are in decision making.

After the lunch break, the students then enjoy a scavenger hunt where they collaborate in teams with our librarians to research data, facts. The best team wins a prize. Several questions are linked to sustainability, corporate social responsibility and ethics, which help them develop awareness about the topics.

At the end of the orientation day, our graduate students fill in a survey where it shows that they understood the importance of sustainability in decision making and that they are eager to learn more about it.

AIM 2 Flourish used in the classroomSince the creation of AIM2Flourish, two professors have been promoting and using AIM2Flourish in their classroom. Dr. Maria Petrescu is using it in her marketing courses and Dr. Guenola Nonet has integrated it in her leadership courses. Several NSU HCBE students have written inspiring stories about leaders innovating for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable FloridaHuizenga College Professor speaks about Economics of Sustainability in Belize. January 8, 2016.

Albert Williams, Associate Professor of Finance and Economics, H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, recently spoke in Belize at a conference sponsored by Oceana, a non-profit group that focuses on protecting the oceans.

The conference theme was “The Energy of Nature and the Nature of Energy” with a focus on discussing the pros and cons of off-shore oil drilling in Belize. Professor Williams’ presentation was on the economics of sustainability.

As the first presenter, Williams set the stage for the conference by providing economic arguments for and against off-shore oil drilling.   The guest speaker for the conference was Alexandra Cousteau, the granddaughter of Jacques Cousteau, the world renowned conservationist, filmmaker, photographer, author

and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. Cousteau is continuing the work of her grandfather.

“Allowing off-shore drilling will be one of the most difficult decisions for the people of Belize,” Williams commented following his return from the conference.

The discussion at the conference included fishermen, tourism business people, University of Belize students, representatives of other non-profit organizations, concerned citizens and the media. Williams provided interviews to local radio stations following his presentation.

Principles for Responsible Management Education

Our Scholar in Residence, Dr. Guenola Nonet is an active member of PRME working groups:

Poverty, A challenge for management education Gender Equality

Principle 6: DialogueWe will facilitate and support dialog and debate among educators, students, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability.

NSU Collaborative Sustainability TeamNSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability is an active group of students, faculty, professors and environmentalists who continuously work to spread sustainability to and beyond NSU’s campus. The goal is to spread awareness and education on sustainability in order to facilitate a change in the way people interact with the environment, leading NSU and the community into an environmentally and socially sustainable future.

How did the NSU Collaborative Team Start?

Guenola Nonet, visiting professor in the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship and one of the founders of NSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability, brought her enthusiasm for sustainability to NSU and found people with common interests.

23 | NSU College of Business PRME 2016 Annual Report

Page 24: A Word from the Dean - unprme.org€¦  · Web viewFrank Cavico, Bahaudin Mujtaba & P. Williamson & B. McClelland (2013). Managing the Link Between Bribery and Wealth Based on Corruption

“I have always been passionate about sustainability, so when I came to NSU to teach in the business school, I realized that many of the students shared my passion and wanted to do something with sustainability,” Nonet said.

Nonet said she realized that almost everyone she encountered at the Huizenga College and across campus wanted to do something to help the community be more sustainable, so the formation of the team came naturally.

“We have 46 members,” said Nonet. “At some point, I realized that we knew people from the different schools here, and all of these people were genuinely interested in helping the campus and Florida become more sustainable.”

Nonet said that one of the most important aspects of the team is that it finally coordinates ideas and projects to effectively tackle sustainability.

“All the willingness, all the interest for social, environmental sustainability is here in every college,” said Nonet. “This makes it easy to move forward with cross-collaboration across campus because the colleges, the employees and the students are interested in doing things on this matter.”

Why else is NSU’s Collaborative Team important?

Bridget Guerrero, master’s in business administration student and former president of the Graduate Business Student Association, said that the collaborative team helps students get involved.

“Last year, there was this issue of fracking in the everglades, which would pollute our drinking water, so when I saw all of these issues arising, I really decided to get involved with the collaborative team and help prevent things like that from happening and most of all spread awareness,” she said.

Guerrero said that the collaborative team is unique because it creates synergies between NSU and the community that increase awareness.

According Guerrero, NSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability is reaching out both socially and environmentally, which separates the team from any other club at NSU.

“The school is already sustainable — we recycle,” said Guerro. “But the reason why NSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability is so important is because we are taking it from just awareness to actions. We’re going beyond the parameters of NSU because we want to touch the hearts of as many people as possible and get them on board with our sustainability efforts.”

According to Jill Horwitz, from Sustainable Stewards of Broward, NSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability has helped to connect students to the community. The Sustainable Stewards of Broward welcomes the partnership with the team because they get to attend meetings and show students how to collect data and implement ideas

“We saw a huge potential here when we heard they were starting a sustainability team,” said Horwitz. “We like to be supportive of that.”

Page 25: A Word from the Dean - unprme.org€¦  · Web viewFrank Cavico, Bahaudin Mujtaba & P. Williamson & B. McClelland (2013). Managing the Link Between Bribery and Wealth Based on Corruption

Horwitz said involvement is just one example of how the team has spread beyond NSU and is making waves in the community by tackling sustainability with a new definition, which also includes social influences

Albert Williams, associate professor in the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship and member of NSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability, said students should take initiative, but they also need the support of faculty and administration.

“I will always discuss sustainability within the finance and economic class because I think they are linked,” said Williams. “We should not destroy the earth for profitability alone. We need to make profit in a sustainable and responsible way.”

People making a difference

“Most persons think that they can’t make a difference, but they really can — all you need to do is get the conversation started,” said Craig Amos, science and technology specialist for the Alvin Sherman Library and member of NSU’s Collaborative Team for Sustainability.

Amos joined the team after presenting and providing research for the Huizenga College lecture series. According to Amos, joining the collaborative team has changed the way he interacts with the environment. He said he is here for students and believes that the team is the perfect avenue to branch out and lead NSU into a sustainable future.

“I now know to cut my grass at a 45 degree angle to prevent weeds from growing out,” he said. “I learn interesting things like that, and when you look back on them, they really can make a difference. Working in library makes me a resource for the team. I can talk to students and provide crucial information about sustainability.”

An active group of university students, faculty, professors, staff and environmentalists recently created the Collaborative Team for Sustainability whose goal is to spread awareness and education on sustainability. The team hopes to facilitate a change in the way people interact with the environment and to lead NSU and the community into an environmentally and sustainable future.

One of the founders of the Collaborative Team for Sustainability, Guénola Nonet, Ph.D., is a scholar in residence at NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Nonet is an international researcher on the strategy and education of business schools to incorporate U.N. Principles for Responsible Management Education and U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

“Through these university-wide student, faculty and staff efforts, NSU continues to make a difference in the surrounding communities and beyond and hopes to make a positive impact on our environment and planet as a whole,” said Nonet.

Additionally, NSU’s colleges of business, law, natural sciences and oceanography, and others offer courses on sustainability-related topics.

One of our HCBE Faculty is Faculty Advisor for NSU UNICEFFor the past two academic years, Dr. Guenola Nonet has had the honor to be asked by NSU UNICEF students’ organization to be their faculty advisor. Together they work on creating awareness about children’s rights, needs for education. This year they plan on developing local partnerships with schools to help answer local needs for children in South Florida.

Our Graduate Trip to ColumbiaWhile most college and graduate students headed home or to

the beach when the fall semester ended this past December, 10 M.B.A. students from NSU’s Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship (HCBE) took off for a rural town in Colombia, called San Roque, Antioquia.

The group was on a mission, but not a religious one like some other college trips. Their goal was to perform community service in a unique way – by sharing their knowledge of business and entrepreneurship.

“Students led workshops with local residents on how to take an idea and create a successful business plan,” explained Albert Williams, Ph.D., associate professor of Finance and Economics, and faculty adviser for the Graduate Student Business Association (GSBA) “They taught from a manual that they developed and left behind for the future business owners to follow.”

“We were able to change the lives of so many people and represent NSU internationally,” said Bridget Guerrero, student coordinator of the trip and GSBA president. “It’s the greatest satisfaction that any student leader could have.”

“I was so proud of our team, their acts of kindness and devotion to the San Roque students made this experience unforgettable,” explained Guerrero. “NSU’s Core Values were demonstrated in each and every one of us. Today we are fortunate to continue mentoring and supporting these

students as they carry on the work we started during our visit.”

The other nine NSU students on the trip included: Angela Maria Nunez Mejia, Immacula Carpentier, Jacqueline Benigni, Juan G. Velez-Cock, Marie Ang, Michelle Nadine Wilson, Norwing Rivas and Victoria Braverman. Greissy Amorocho, accounts manager, Student Affairs & College of Undergraduate Studies, also accompanied the group.

During the two-day workshop, 70 San Roque teenagers and adults listened attentively as the HCBE grad students provided step-by-step lessons to help them with a business idea to solve a problem in their

farming community. Twelve groups were formed and developed business plans that incorporated sustainability of the natural resources in the community with a focus on eco/agri tourism.

According to Williams, “The villagers created names and mission statements for their companies and determined management requirements. They estimated revenues, expenses, profits and the cost of financing. One group even created a PowerPoint presentation and did projections in Excel.”

The San Roque “students” created marketing plans, developed logos and, of course, included the 4Ps of marketing (price, product, promotion and place) – a core learning objective in HCBE’s curriculum. The M.B.A. students coached them through the process, providing guidance and presentation tips along the way.

“The workshop made me proud to be a NSU student because I saw that I can apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to help others,” said Jacqueline Benigni. “I also was proud that the Huizenga College supported me to grow as a person through a trip like this. There is no price tag for that!”

Williams agreed that the NSU students’ impact was impressive. “When the town residents presented their projects, we were amazed,” he said. “One group started with a prayer and then another group started by singing an original song, thanking us for sharing. There was even a group that brought samples of a local drink that they wanted to sell. There were children, teenagers and adults working together on the projects; they took the lessons in finance and ran with them.”

Benigni added, “During this trip, I realized that as long as you have prepared yourself with the right education, you have a duty to help someone else become aware of what they are capable of. We showed them that with hard work, guidance and the right motivation, the world becomes flat and anything is possible.”

Williams added that the town’s mayor even came out to make a presentation. “We definitely felt the love from the community,” he said. “Just as importantly, our students learned so much from the trip. This was an education that they will never forget!”

Climate Change & Sustainability – ICMR in Lahore Nov. 2015, Dr. B. Mujtaba

One of the main responsibilities of current leaders and educators is to prepare the future leaders for the challenges that will confront them in a modern global economy. These challenges encompass being aware of the legal, ethical, social, and environmental expectations that society has for business leaders. These future leaders, therefore, must be socialized with legal, ethical, and sustainability values. As such, this lecture provides a model for sustainability that can be used by individuals, groups, as well as managers, educators and political leaders for training and infrastructure development purposes.

The video provides reflections, comments and statement for the International Conference on Management Research (ICMR) delegates, speakers and supporters that came from many countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, China, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, France, Italy, Australia, United Kingdom, United States, and others.
