SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE *All morning services are held in the Sanctuary.

FIRST LIGHT (Simple) - 8:15 - 9:05 am

CORNERSTONE (Contemporary) - 9:30 - 10:40 am FESTIVAL (Traditional) - 10:55 am -12 pm

STUDENT WORSHIPSunday evenings from 5 - 7 pm in the FLC Gym. Dinner served at 5 pm ($2).

Our Bride’s Room, located just to the right of the Sanctuary, is open during all services for the use of parents with young children, with worship streamed live into the room.

All are warmly welcomed at Christ Church. We invite you to stop by our “I’m New Here” table downstairs in the Gathering Hall where you can find out more about our congregation. First time guests can also pick up a special welcome gift there. If you would like to join the Christ Church family today, you may do so either by professing your faith in Jesus Christ, or by transferring your membership from another Christian congregation. Simply fill out a new member card which may be found in the Sanctuary pew racks and bring it with you as you come to the front to meet the pastors during the closing music at any of our services. If you have not yet been baptized, we will be happy to recognize your decision today as well as arrange for a convenient time to talk with you about the meaning of that sacrament before scheduling it for one of our upcoming worship services. For more information about our programs, staff and beliefs, please visit our website at www.christchurchsl.org.

THE WEEKLY WORDby Pastor C. Chappell Temple

THE WEEKLY WORD

We inherited the word from the ancient Greeks. For at least according to my old friend “Cliff” (you may have read his notes as well), in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus was away from Ithaca for twenty years, the first ten spent fighting the Trojan War and the last ten just trying to get back home. That meant that the son whom he had left as a baby, Telemachus, grew up needing guidance from someone else.

And so it fell to an old and trusted friend of Odysseus to step in and fill that role, not only helping the boy to develop into a man, but also teaching him how to help his mother, Penelope. (She was busy trying to fend off the hundred or more suitors who came calling,

all thinking that Odysseus was dead and the throne could be theirs.)

The friend’s name was Mentor, and since Homer’s time, that word has come to refer to anyone who is a positive and guiding influence in the life of another person, usually someone who is younger. Which is exactly what Paul, nine hundred years after Homer, became for his protégé, Timothy.

What was true centuries ago, however, is still true today: everyone needs a mentor from time to time, no matter how young or old we may be. For it’s not just a question of who is raising you up in life, but likewise, who are you raising up as well?

Our sermon series for the next several weeks will thus look at some of the timeless advice that the great apostle Paul shared with Timothy. Indeed, whatever our role in life—as advice giver or counsel taker—the words of a seasoned pastor to a young Christian may be just the mentoring message we all need in this walk of faith.

No matter how long it may take you to finally get home.

A yearning for the Lord who visited His own, and by His death for sing atoned. Refrain Emmanuel, Emmanuel, within our hearts, the yearning. There is a yearning that fills the hearts of those who wait the day of His appearing. There is a yearning with all our sorrows are erased. APR30 LIFE’S ULTIMATE GOAL | 1 TIMOTHY 1:1-7

Everyone needs one sooner or later in life…a mentor who can help guide you into the places you want to go, but need a little help in getting there. And that was certainly the case with a young preacher long ago named Timothy. So what did his mentor, the apostle Paul, have to say to him in the two letters that bear his name? And is there something we can learn as well in overhearing Paul’s words?

Dear UCSS friends,

This surely is exciting and refreshing news for me and the community. When I read [of Christ Church's exceeded fundraising for Uganda], I was filled with so much joy and excitement, I just had to praise God and call people to join me in the praise. Thank you so much for your great passion and outstanding commitment to God's work of lifting people out of desperate poverty, brokenness and hopelessness and giving them new hope in Christ through Uganda Christian and Support Services.

Over the last 6 years of the UCSS ministry, I have seen this hopeless community dis-cover and rediscover hope in Jesus Christ and what an incredible journey it has been. However, the lack of basic needs like fresh water and devastating droughts for the last couple of years have been a tough test of their hope, and resilience as well as a threat to their livelihood. You see fresh water means a better life in this community; it means better health, less sickness, better farms, better schools performance and more so, more access to the gospel as we envision a Bible Study at each water well. I feel that words cannot express how grateful I and the people of Bulike and Buluya are and how encouraged we are by your loving hearts and drive to make a difference in all our lives. We will continue to pray for you your loved ones and the Christ Church Sugar Land family.

We pray for God's continued blessings on you all,

Peace and joy,Dr. Ronald KaluyaDirector of UCSS

The quarterly dinner and meeting of our Church Council has been rescheduled in order to celebrate Pentecost, the birth of the church, as we near the second half of our year. This will also enable our personnel committee, trustees, missions, and Higher Grounds planning teams to report on their activities, along with a summation of the annual conference which will just have concluded its session earlier that week.

Plan now on joining us for this meeting open to all members of the congregation, as well as to those serving on the Church Council for the year.
