THE RESEARCH CENTER IN NUMBERSSupporting academics and researchÉcole Polytechnique actively promotes the skills and expertise of its laboratories towards industrial firms. The school also integrates

research into its academic programs, most notably through the creation of Academic and Research Chairs. The 15 active chairs enable scientists to explore new areas of cutting-edge research while expanding the educational opportunities for young graduates via the creation of Master’s programs and additional specializations. Various areas of concentration are available: energy, biomedical engineering, materials, modeling and digital sciences, sustainable development, management, innovation, economics and finance.

Technology transferÉcole Polytechnique assists laboratories with developing their industrial relations and marketing their skills and scientific expertise to business partners. In commercializing their patents, software, and techniques, École Polytechnique plays an important role in stimulating the economy, while generating new resources and funding for the Research Center laboratories.

Innovating: a cutting-edge Research CenterThe school’s ambitious research strategy is implemented by the École Polytechnique Research Center; its 20 laboratories are joint research units with the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) or other research institutions, such as the CEA, INRIA, INSERM, Université Paris-Sud, ENSTA ParisTech and UPMC. The mission of the Research Center is to explore the frontiers of knowledge to provide major interdisciplinary contributions to science, technology and society. It holds 500 patents (including extensions) and registers an average of 18 new patents per year.

The École Polytechnique Alumni Association, known as AX, is dedicated to creating and reinforcing the bonds of solidarity among over 25,000 alumni. AX organizes meetings, seminars, conferences, and events which are open to a wide audience.

It awards merit scholarships and prizes in order to reward and encourage significant research results and scientific progress. It supports equal opportunity programs and helps welcome international students on campus through its mentoring program. It also provides financial support for various Polytechnician organizations, student associations and activities. The AX Office of Career Services provides professional support and individualized guidance for students and graduates.

Hands-on professional experienceIngénieur Polytechnicien students complete 3 professional internships during their enrollment: one business internship, one research internship, and one final project internship. Students are required to spend a minimum of 18 months in internships. Many doctoral students complete their thesis under a CIFRE contract with industrial funding.

Promoting startup creationÉcole Polytechnique fosters innovation and entrepreneurship through three Master’s programs: Project – Innovation – Design, Network Industries and Digital Economy, and Engineering and Innovation Technologies, and through support structures such as its business incubator, various associations and start-up grants, thus maximizing exchanges and networking opportunities among its students, alumni and research teams.

• overseeing the school’s fundraising campaigns, along with its two sister organizations: the École Polytechnique Charitable Trust (UK) and Friends of École Polytechnique (USA)

• supporting startup creation with awards such as the Pierre Faurre Prize and the Jean-Louis Gerondeau/Zodiac Aerospace Prize

• offering scholarships to international students and students in outreach programs

• sending volunteers to review students’ oral internship reports (1,200/year)

A non-profit organization founded in 1987, the École Polytechnique Foundation was created by a group of 20 companies to facilitate the school’s development in a rapidly changing global economy. Its primary missions are to increase the school’s international attractiveness through its academic programs and recruitment of students, faculty and researchers, to bridge the gap between its Research Center and the commercial market, and to help the school adapt its curriculum to

the ever-changing needs of the business world. The Foundation fulfills its missions through the following activities:

Strategic partnerships to attract the highest talentÉcole Polytechnique wields a large network of partner universities located all over the world. Each year, over 150 Polytechnicians are accepted into the best universities in Europe, North America and Asia. The school’s excellence, combined with its substantial network of partners, attracts world-class students and researchers to its three levels of academic programs – Ingénieur Polytechnicien, Master’s, and PhD – and to the Research Center laboratories.

Expanding international visibility for academic excellenceAs a key participant in the Université Paris-Saclay project along with several major academic partners, École Polytechnique is at the forefront of international higher education and research.Located at the center of one of Europe’s largest scientific and economic clusters, Université Paris-Saclay is a major national project which will boost the international visibility of its member establishments.
