WUU's25thAnniversaryisourchancetostopandrest.Attimes,inthewhirlwindofplanning,itwashardtofeelrestful,butnowthateverythingisinplaceforSaturday&Sunday,Icanfeeltheawarenessandgratituderising!

Now,inthesemorerestfuldays,weallhaveachancetolookback.Attimeswewillstruggletoremembertheexactdates,thenames,eventhepreciseorderofevents.Butprimarily,wewillrememberthefeelingofhomecoming.Wewillrememberpreciousmomentsofholdingbrandnewbabiesandthehandsofthosewhoweredying.Wewillremembercryingduringthemiddleschoolceremonies,andthosesoaringharmoniesofWeShallOvercome.Wewillremembermarchingforjustice,servingmeals,buildinghouses,donatingsocksandunderwear.Wewillremembertheargumentsandthebrokenhearts‐‐thesetbacksandthedisappointments.Andwewillrememberhowwepersevered,takingonemorehard‐earnedsteparoundtheSpiral.

Inthesemomentsofrestfulremembering,wealsowonderwhatthenext25yearswilllooklike.Williamsburgisgrowing,andotherfaithcommunitiesarerespondingbyopeninguptheirfranchiseshere(didyougetthepostcardfromWater'sEdge?).NoteveryonewillbelookingforaChristianchurch.Somearelookingforareligiouscommunitytheydon'tevenknowexists.Wouldn'titbegreat,theyaskthemselves,iftherewereareligioushomethatencouragedeveryonetothinkcriticallyabouttheirfaith?Couldtherebeachurchthatpreachedthetruthinalltheworld'sreligions?Aretherepeopleoffaithspeakingoutagainstracism,homophobia,economicinequality,massincarceration,andenvironmentaljustice?

WUUisjustthatplace,butwedon'thaveroomrightnowforeveryonewhowouldcomehere.Thereisn'tenoughroominFahsHousefor10morekids;thereisn'tenoughroominParkerHousefor10moreteens.Wehaveanopportunityatthiscrucialmilestonetosetthefoundationforthenext25years.

WhatwillWUUlooklikein2039?Whowillbeatthat50thanniversaryparty,"resting,foramomentontheformingedge"theirlives,lookingbackinawarenessandgratitudeforeverythingwe,in2014,areabouttodotogether?

OnSunday,February1,2014,aspartofour25thbirthdaycelebration,ShareThePlatewillgototheSouthEastDistrict’sChaliceLighterprogram.Youcanconvertthisone‐timeofferingintoayearroundpledgeofsupportbybecomingaChaliceLighter.UptothreetimesayearCLsreceiveacallinthemailrequestingadonationforacongregationthatwishestoexpanditsprograms,callaministerorbuildanaddition.Wethensendourpledgedamount‐‐$25isthesuggestedamountalthoughanyamountisac‐cepted—totheSoutheastDistrictandtheselectedcongregationreceivesagrantofabout$25,000.WUUhasreceivedtwosuchgrantsinthepastandwillapplyforanotherwhenBOFmovesahead,how‐everweneed20%participationtowinagrant.Pleaseconsidercompletinganapplicationonlineatwww.seduua.org/chalicelighters.htmlorseeWayneMoyer,WUU’sChaliceLighterCoordinator.

Onceagain,IamamazedatthebusynessofWUU.Ioftenthinkofcongregationshavingabitofdowntimeaftertheholidays,butsuchisnotthecasewithours.Whatwearenotinthemidstofdoing,weareplanningtodo.Isenseaspecialexcitementintheair.Thesanc‐tuaryhasbeen illedtocapacity.Theanniversarycommitteeisworkingdiligentlytomakeour25thanniversarydinneraveryspecialevent.Wehavesomanyofourformerministersandfriendscomingtocelebratewithus.Anorientationclassforprospectivenewmembersjustcompleted;Ihavehighhopesthatmanyofthemwillsoonsignthebookandbecomefullmembers.

TheBoardanditscommitteeshavebeenworkingbehindthescenestokeepWUUmovingonourmissiontowardourVision2017goals.

We’rehearingabouttheexcitingnextstepsthecongregationistakingasweconsiderexpandingourfacili‐ties.Thankstoyouwhocontributedtothefundthatallowsthesenextsteps.Soonwewillhaveanarchi‐tectmeetingwiththecongregationinavarietyoffocusgroupstogetadetailedunderstandingofwhatweneedandwant.WatchforinformationfromtheBuildingOurFutureTaskForceonhowyoucanpar‐ticipate.

TheFinanceCommitteekeeps ine‐tuningthepreliminarybudgetsothatbythetimeallpledgesareturnedin,a inalbudgetcaneasilybeputinplace.

YouhaveheardfromtheStewardshipCommitteeabouttheneedforallofuswhoareabletocommitapor‐tionofourincometoWUUsothatwecancompleteallthose2017Visiongoals,takingusfurtheronourmission.TheBoardhopesyouwillbegenerousasyouconsiderhowmuchWUUmeanstoyouandwhatithastoofferothersoutsideourdoors.

AfterreceivingwordfromtheimmigrationarmoftheNSAthatourrequesttohireLizzieRoper,aUKcitizen,asourinterimDirectorofLifespanFaithDevelopmentwasdenied,thePersonnelCommitteeisregroup‐ingandhasformedanewsearchcommitteeforthedirectorposition.Wehavehighhopesforsuccessthere,too.

TheGovernanceCommittee,thatkeepstheBoardrunninginitsongoingwork,plannedacombinedBoard/MinistryTeamleaderretreattoconsiderhowbettertohelpallmembersbecomeinvolvedinthemissionprocess.TheyarenowplanningaretreatfortheBoardtoexamineitselfasitapproachestheendofitsyearandbeginningofthenext.Boardturn‐overtakesplacetheendofApril.

Afterallthefestivitiesofourturning25havecomeandgone,anotherbigeventwillbeuponus–theAnnualCongregationalMeeting.Savethisdateandtime–Sunday,February9that12:30–immediatelyfollowingtheservice.Youwillhearmoreaboutallthecharactersinactionandstopsalongourjourneytowardreachingourgoals.AND,ifyouareavotingmember,youwillbeaskedtovotefornewof icersandabylawchange.Moreinformationaboutthatmeetingisonitswaytoyou,ifyouhavenotalreadyreceivedit.Yourpresenceisim‐portant.Alightlunchwillbeserved.Childcarewillbeprovided.

Aretheworkerstheretreatedfairly?Accordingtomediareports,theansweris:probablynot.Especiallyduringthecoldwinter,wehavetowonderhowtheyandtheirfamiliesfare.ThisnationwidechallengeisfacedbyTheRestaurantOpportunitiesCentersUnited,anotherUUSCpartner,thatworkswithrestaurantworkersthroughoutthecountrytobringfairworkingconditions—livingwages,paidsickdays,equalchancestoadvance—toallrestaurantworkers,manyofwhomareimmigrants.Currentindustrystand‐ardskeeppeopleinpoverty,denyworkerstheirfullrights,andcontributetothestagnationoftheU.S.economy.

dance(waituntilnextweekhoney‐eachSundayisverydifferent)!CherylgrewuponLongIsland,haslivedinVirginiaformorethan20years,andinWilliamsburgwithMichaelsinceAugust.Cherylhastwochildren(Ian&Ivy).MichaelandCherylweremarriedbyJen‐niferatWarnerHallinGloucesteronAugust3ofthispastyear(theirfriendsandfamilywereveryimpressedwithJenniferandtheweddingceremonyshewroteespeciallyforthem!).MichaelandCherylmetonmatch.comwhereCheryllistedherreligiousaf iliationas"memberofthereality‐basedcommunity".NothavinghadaninterestinanyorganizedreligionshewasexposedtobeforemeetingMichael,CherylhasenjoyedlearningaboutUUandhasappreciatedtheopenness,acceptance,andinclusivenessoftheUUs.

VanessaJonesgrewupinYork,PennsylvaniaandwenttoBucknellUniversitytostudytheatreandEnglishliterature.SheattendedtheUniversityofIowaforaMaster’sinLiter‐aryStudies,anditwastherethatshedecidedsheneverwantedtoliveinacoldclimateagain.WhenshemetaCanadianwhowouldbecomeherhus‐band,sheconvincedhimtomovesouth,andthey irstsettledinRaleigh,NCbeforemovingtoD.C.andthentotheWilliamsburgarea.Vanessa,herCanadi‐an‐turned‐southernerhusbandJesse,andtheirsonLyonlovetotravelandalwayshaveatickettosomewhere(usuallywarm).VanessaspentseveralyearsteachingcollegeandhighschoolEnglishliteraturebeforegettingajobattheNationalZooinD.C.runningthechildren’sclassesandsummercamps.Shehasbeensingingallherlife, irstinmusicaltheatreandtheninchoruses,andshenowownsMusicTogetherWilliamsburg,teachingmusicandmove‐mentclassesforbabies,youngchildrenandtheirgrown‐ups.VanessabeganattendingWUUinthesummerof2013,andsheisgratefultoJenniferandtheWUUcommunityforhelpinghertodevelopaspiritualpathandamoreopenandcompassionateheartandmind.

Forthe ifthconsecutiveyear,themonthofAprilwillbeacelebrationoftheEarththroughtheArts.Inhonorofourcongregation’s25thAnniversary(2014)weareexpandingtheexhibittoincludemusi‐cians,writersofproseandpoetry,aswellasourvisualartists.TheAprilartexhibitbegan,andcontinues,asaGreenSanctuaryprojectco‐sponsoredbytheSocialJus‐ticeTeamandtheGayleHenionCreativeArtsGroup.Inthespringseasonofawakeningandrenewal,weespeciallyrememberour7thUUPrinciple,“respectfortheinterconnectedwebofallexistenceofwhichweareapart.”ThisisatimeforourownWUUartiststosharetheiroriginalworkswhichexpressthis7thPrinciple.WealsoinviteourWUUwriters&musicianstointerpretthisPrincipleintheirownway.Allagesareencouragedtoparticipate.AsthecongregationcelebratesEarthDayinApril,ourSanctuarywillfeaturebeautifulworksofartandabookofpoetryandprosecreatedbyourownWUUartistsandwriters.ThereceptiononApril5willbeanopportunityforusalltoenjoythevisualartsdisplayedonthewalls,tohearfromsomeofourwriters,andperhaps,listentosomeoriginalmusic.RegistrationformswillbeavailableintheNarthexinlateFebruaryandmustbereturnedbyMarch16.TheartworkandwrittencontributionsaredueMarch30.JustonepieceperpersonwillbeacceptedduetospacelimitationsintheSanctuary.ChecktheSpiralandtheMarchNewsletterfordetailsorcontactDonnaStanford.Emailof ice@wuu.orgformoreinformation.
