General DescriptionTheMPS4164analogminiaturepressurescannerisanextremelycompact64channelpressurescanner.Ithasbeendesignedfromthegroundupwithsize,accuracyandfunctionalityinmind.EachMPS4164moduleincorporates64individualsiliconpressuresensors,calibrationvalving,ahigh-speedmultiplexer(45kHz)andaninstrumentationamplifiter.Simply,itacceptsupto64individualpneumaticpressureinputsandconvertsthemtohighlevelelectronicsignals.Itboastsasmallfootprint,aruggedisolate-purgecalibrationvalve,extremelystableandrepeatablepressuresensorsandawealthofotherinnovativefeatures.TheMPS4164isdesignedaroundacoresensorpackthatusesacustompackaged,ultra-stablesensor.Scanivalveengineersevaluatedknowncausesofnon-repeatabilityinpiezoresistivepressuretransducers.Designingadoubleisolationmethodofbondingthesensorstothebasesubstrates(patentpending)minimizesthemechanicalinfluencesofassemblyandthermalexpansion.Thisprocessdramaticallyimprovesthestabilityandtheresultingaccuracyofthesensors.Abrandnewvalvehasbeendesignedthatfullyisolatesthesensorsfrompurgepressureandprovideslongterm,maintenancefreeoperation.Notonlyisthevalvedesignanimprovementoverlegacyproducts,buttwodifferentvalveactuationoptionsareavailable.The"standard"(CPx)actuationusesopposing65psicontrolpressures
toshiftthevalveintowhicheverstateisdesired.Thenew"NormalPx"(NPx)optionusesaspringtodefaultthevalveintomeasurementmodeand120psitoshiftitintocalibratemode.
Model MPS4164
ApplicationsTheMPS4164electronicpressurescanningmod-uleisspecificallydesignedforuseinwindtun-nelandflighttestswhereoperationalconditionsareveryspaceconstrainedandpressuresdonotexceed50psi.Itisidealforuseinsidesmallsuper-sonicwindtunnelmodels.Theverylowpressurerangesofferedandsmallsizealsomakeitanidealfitforwindengineeringapplicationswherethemeasurementpressuresareverylow.Inhighchannelcountsystems,thelowercost-perchannelmakesitanaffordablesolution.Itmaybemountedinanypositionsothepressuresensorsmaybeclosecoupledtothepressuresourcestobemeasured.Removableheadersallowforeasyinstallationandremovalwithoutbreakingthepneumaticlines.TheMPS4164moduleisdesignedtobeusedinconjunctionwithScanivalvemodelERAD4000Re-moteA/DormodelDSM4000DigitalServiceMod-ule.EachMPS4164pressurescannerincorporatesanembeddedRTDtomonitorthetemperatureofthepressuresensors.TheERAD4000communi-catesviaEthernet.TheDSM4000communicatesviaEthernet,RS-232,orARINC429.
Legacy CompatibilityTheMPS4164wasdesignedspecificallytoreplacethelegacyZOCseriesofpressurescanners.ThisMPScandirectlyreplaceaZOC3364-channelanalogscanner.Itcanbeadrop-inreplacementfortheZOC33orcanbeusedtoexpandanexistingZOC33system.TheelectricalinterfaceoftheMPS4164isexactlythesameasaZOCscanner.Theelectricalconnectoristhesamemeaningitoperatesusingexistingcablingandhardwareinfastructure.FirmwareintheDSM4000andtheERAD4000canbeeasilyfield-updatedtosupporttheMPS4164*.AnintegratedTEDsIDchipintheMPS4164supportsautomaticsystemconfigurationatsystempower-up.ThepneumaticinterfaceandvalvelogicoftheMPS4164isalsothesameasaZOCscanner.Inthe"CPx"configuration,theMPS4164operates65psicontrolpressureswiththesamecontrollogicasaZOC33.ThisallowssinglelogicoperationinmixedZOC/MPS4164system.WhiledirectlylegacycompatiblewiththeZOCscanners,theMPS4164offersmanyfeatureupgrades.Overallsensorperformanceisimproved,theoperatingtemperatureisextended,thescannerisphysicallysmallerandtheMPSvalveincludesfull"isolate-purge"functionality.

Improved sensors, Improved AccuracyTheprimaryfocusoftheMPS4164wastoimprovetheunit'soverallaccuracyacrosstheentiretemperaturerange.ScanivalveworkeddirectlywithaleadingsensordesignertocreateacustomsensorpackagespecificallyfortheMPSseriesofscanners.ThisdesignusestwolayersofRTVtoisolatethepressuresensorfrommechanicalinfluenceslikethosecausedbythermalexpansionorassembly.PiezoresistivesensorsalsochangegreatlyinspanandzeroovertemperaturesoweplacedeightindividualRTDsinverycloseproximitytothesensors.Combinedwiththedesignplacingthesensorsinanaluminumhousinginthecenterofthemoduletopreventrapidtemperaturechanges,theseRTDsallowustoaccuratelycorrectforanychangeinthesensor'sbehaviorduetotemperature.

Pneumatic Calibration ValveThevalvedesignisasliding-typevalve.Analuminumshuttle,populatedwithself-lubricatingO-ringscyclesbackandforthbetweentwopositionstoachieveeachofthepneumaticstates.The"bearingplate"betweentheslidingO-ringsandthealuminumstationaryportionofthevalveisaproprietarycompoundthatisextremelylowfriction.TheO-ringsaresupportedcompletelytopreventanydeformationduringastatechange.Thevalveshuttleissupportedonballbearingstoprovideminimalfrictionandmaximumsupport.Thisdesignallowsforlowactuationforceandminimal“stiction”-meaningtheactuationforcedoesnotnoticeablyincreaseafterlongperiodsofdormancy.Samplesofthevalvedesignweretestedtoover1,000,000cycleswithoutmaintenance.

Existingpressurescannersrequireoutsidepneumaticpressureasaforcetoswitchthevalvelogic.Inmostapplications,this"controlpressure"mustbecontinuouslysuppliedtothescannertomaintainthedesiredvalvestate.TheMPS4164offersauniqueoptionwithavalvethatdefaultstothe"measurement"mode,allowingsamplepressurestobereadwithoutanyoutsidepneumaticcontrolpressure.Thisoption,called"NormalPx,"isanotherwaytheMPS4164simplifiessystemarchitecture.Anopticalvalvepositionsensorhasbeenintegratedallowingthevalvestatetobequeriedwithasimplesoftwarecommand.
