HERITAGE

Between 1900 and 1973, the United Kingdom lost 26 of its native breeds. This was caused by changing farming methods and a much more intensive approach to food production.

Even though many of the UK's native breeds were no longer considered economically valuable for the mass production of food, their many other important attributes such as adaptation to the local environment, the genetic diversity they represented and their close links to our livestock history and cultural heritage were recognised by a group of pioneering individuals. This led to the formation of Rare Breeds Survival Trust to help conserve and safeguard Britain's remaining native breeds from extinction. Since the trusts formation in 1973 no other native livestock breed has become extinct in the UK. Before the formation of RBST, a number of the UK's breeds were lost. These include:

Cattle: Alderney, Suffolk Dun, Sheeted Somerset, Castlemartin, Caithness, Irish Dun Sheep: Limestone, St Rona’s Hill, Roscommon, Rhiw Pigs: Ulster White, Small White, Yorkshire Blue & White,

Dorset Gold Tip, Lincolnshire Curly Coat, Cumberland.

Horses: Manx, Cushendale, Tiree, Long Mynd, Galloway, Goonyhill Chickens: Lincolnshire Buff

Why should we protect rare breeds? These traditional native breeds are a symbol of British national heritage, but they are unfortunately often deemed less important compared to historic buildings or rare plants. Allows detailing of the genetic diversity and variation found in these rare breeds. Ensuring genetic diversity within the UK’s farm livestock means we have the genetic resources to respond to disease threats among commercial breeds of livestock or to introduce desirable qualities into these breeds in response to changing needs. Managing our areas of countryside in a way sympathetic to wildlife through conservation grazing. Ensures consumer choice in the food we eat.

Our Aim: Securing the future of our rare and native breeds of farm livestock.

How we do it- RBST Monitors rare and native farm breeds: Every year we collect data from breed societies and use the number of animals registered in a year to estimate the total number of breeding females. From this we produce our annual Watch list.

We monitor threats to breeds: Other factors can threaten our breeds such as inbreeding and geographical concentration.

RBST saves rare and native farm breeds: We save genetics in our Gene Bank. We collect genetics from animals, usually semen from males but also embryos. This is our insurance policy. If a breed were to become extinct, we can use this store to revive a breed. We save animals. In emergencies, RBST will buy genetically important stock and place it in approved breeding centres.

RBST promotes rare and native farm breeds: We promote the breeding and registration of rare and native breeds.

Together our staff, members and support groups provide a network of knowledge to support and encourage breeders.

We promote the use of rare and native breeds for Food, Fibre and Conservation Grazing.

If you would like to contact a local support group member then please contact our Chair Lyn Arrowsmith 01347 824534

or Secretary Judith Hawkhead 01347 824534

VACCINES- It is that time of year again when a lot of animal

vaccinations take place. We thought we would give you a “refresher course” of what vaccines are and how they work – in very simplistic terms!

Most vaccines that we supply are “attenuated” or dead vaccines which are administered to animals so they produce antibodies to become immune to a particular disease.

This is a clever way of “tricking” the animals immune system into thinking it has got the disease without causing any harm. Vaccines should be administered ONLY to healthy animals and certainly not to stressed or diseased animals. Most vaccines should be given twice, usually 4-6 weeks apart. This is to ensure the longevity of cover, but please read the manufacturer’s instructions with regard to this, as well injection method, storage, and safety. An annual booster will give yearlong cover with most vaccines.

If you are using Heptavac P+ in ewes, it is normal to give the annual booster 4-6 weeks before lambing as this will cause her to produce high levels of antibodies which will be in turn passed to her lambs via the colostrum. If you are using footvax, this can be given once, depending on the severity of the problem and in some cases will help to treat the problem. However, in severe cases please follow the manufacturer’s instructions as you will need to administer twice followed by an annual booster. Bravoxin 10 is now being widely used by many of our cattle and sheep farmers. This broad spectrum clostridial vaccine is low dose with 2ml given for cattle and 1 ml for sheep. If you are already using Covexin, Bravoxin is a good alternative and can be given 8-2 weeks before parturition to give high levels of immunity for the offspring.

Finally, all vaccines are temperature controlled products and must be used within hours of breaching the bottle. Never introduce a dirty needle into a bottle of vaccine as it will contaminate it and may render it useless. We have many injector systems available including the sterimatic system which ensures the needle is always kept sterile and also safe as it withdraws into the antiseptic cap. Please ask us for our advice on any of the above. We are happy to help.

VITAMIN DRENCHES FOR EWES & LAMBS

VitAmax Sheep Ewes will benefit from a dose of vitamin drench high in vitamins A and D3 & E which help with fertility. This could be carried out at the same time as their pre-tupping worming dose. Our VitAmax Sheep Vitamin Drench is specifically designed as a pre-tupping drench, containing vitamins and chelated trace elements proven to improve fertility. Why not try it this year?

CoSeTrace+ Sometimes a lack in certain vitamins like cobalt and selenium can cause a lamb to pine and scour. These two vital trace elements cannot be stored in the body but are vital for strong growth and muscle development. Why not give your growing lambs a boost with our CoSeTrace + Vitamin drench. Our own brand CoSeTrace is a liquid trace element and vitamin supplement ideally suited for growing lambs, it contains high levels of Cobalt, selenium, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin E, both essential for good growth and development.

And finally…. An old vicar was retiring and selling his horse, so he put an ad in the local newspaper. It wasn’t long before it was bought by Bob, who decided to ride it home. But when he mounted up, the horse wouldn’t move. “I trained this horse from a little foal,” said the vicar. “He only moves when you say Jesus Christ and stops when you say Amen.” Bob thanked the vicar and sure enough when he said Jesus Christ, the horse set off. However on the way home they were caught in a ferocious thunderstorm and the horse bolted when there was a particularly loud crack of thunder. By the time Bob had recovered his wits, the horse was galloping madly through the countryside and it took him a moment or two to remember to say Amen. Immediately the horse came to a standstill, teetering right on the edge of a cliff. “Jesus Christ!” he said.

LEGISLATION ON RAT POISON AND SPRAY CHEMICALS

A UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime that will require farmers to hold certified 'proof of competence' in rodent pest control before being allowed to buy and use professional anticoagulant rodenticides has been launched by the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use. From April 2016 onwards, rodenticide products with new ‘stewardship conditions’ labels for use outside by professionals, including farmers, will be introduced carrying the following statement: “For supply to and use only by professional users holding certification demonstrating compliance with UK rodenticide stewardship regime requirements”. Farmers who have completed an approved training course and obtained a certificate will be

permitted to buy and use these products.

Spray legislation is changing in November. If you were born before December 1964 and have been operating under "Grandfather rights" to purchase your spray chemicals, you will no longer be able to do this after 26th November this year. So, you either get on a training course and obtain a certificate of competence, or ensure whoever is applying the spray is suitably qualified to do so. You will still be able to buy the spray chemicals from us without a certificate providing you sign our spray chemical register to state that you are not applying the chemical yourself. Please note: if you are found to be applying spray chemicals

without the appropriate training and certificate, it could impact on your single farm payment, so beware!!

The changes in legislation regarding the purchase of aluminium phosphides (talunex and phostoxin) come in to place this month.

There are many courses being operated locally to enable you to obtain certificates to continue to purchase these products, so please don’t leave it until the last minute as you will not be able

to buy these products without the appropriate training and certificates.
