     INTERNATIONAL

     TOOL CO.

    HOUSTON,

     TEXAS

    A  BRIEF

      HISTORY

    Founded

      in

      1958,

      A-Z

      International

      began

      business with

      a

charter to supply superior products and s ervices to the oi l and

    gas wel l

     drilling

industry on a world-wide basis. The initial prod-

ucts  were downhole mil l ing tools which were marketed both

domestically and internationally. The bulk of A-Z's initial sales

    were

in Venezuela, more specif ically, sales and service opera-

t ions were centered in the Venezuelan states of Anzoategui and

    Zulia

which are the equivalent of Texas and Louisiana in the

domestic market. A-Z International Tool Company draws its

    name from

      th e   first

      letters

      o f

      these states.

    In

     1960, underreamers were

      added

to the product l ine and

A-Z's domestic service operations were expanded

      to

      meet

growing industry needs. Casing cutters were introduced

     in

     1964

which led A-Z to develop prop r ietary plug and abandon

methods for  offshore wel ls and a  variety of new  tool system s fo r

the offshore dril l ing industry. Focusing engineering and oper-

ational talent on marine dril l ing needs eventually led to the

patented "One-Trip Cut and Recovery System" for recovering

subsea wel lheads from the ocean

      floor.

A-Z's first international s ervice center opened

      its

     doors

     in

     1965

    in

Venezue la. Since that time, international service cen ters have

    been founded

     in

Scotland, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, C hina,

    Egypt, Oman, Norway,

and Angola. 'Dom estical ly the

      company

operates from seve ral locat ions on the G ulf and P acif ic coasts.

    En joy ing a s teady g rowth a nd pro f i t ab i l i t y , t he c om pan y

established its own product manufacturing operation in 1963 at

3317 W est 11th Street in Ho uston,

     Texas,

     and has been head-

    quartered

     at

     that location since.

     To

     meet

     market

     demands,

     A-Z's

Service Tool man ufacturing capabi l i ty and capacity have been

increasing steadi ly s ince 1963 and curre nt ly are house d in a

    30,000 square foot

     facil i ty

      in Houston.

Dri lled-in permane nt anchor pi les w ere introduced by A-Z to

    th e

f loating dri l ling industry in 1958 and have been su cces sful ly

appl ied in most act ive offshore basins throughout the w orld. A-Z

pioneered dril led-in pil ing systems for both the offshore dril l ing

    industry

     and the

     offshore construct ion industry

     and is the

     recog-

    nized "expert" in this field.

    In

     1975, A-Z was acquired by the  M asco Corporation o f

     Taylor,

M ic h iga n . Masco 's energy re la ted group o f comp anies and

divisions has since grown to include such o rganizations as G rant

and s ervices to i ts customers.

    In

1981 and 1982, A-Z International continued  to demo nstrate

its   engineering leadership and product innovations. A-Z intro-

    duced

     designed to

      provide

    a

     means

     of

     sidetracking

      in a

     cased hole. Named

     the Pack-Stodk,

    this unique tool saves time

     and

     money

      by

      reducing

      the

      number

of  trips needed to cut a casing windo w. Later in 1982, A-Z added

the A-Z Hole Opener to its l ine of drilling tools. Made ent irely of

forged  components, the A-Z  line o f Hole Open ers enables A-Z to

     o f

     and

With n ew tools such a s the Pa ck-Stock, Hole Opener, and the

    • The "Dyna-C ut" charge

is stored on the rig in  separate

containers as af lamm able l iquid (Nitrome thane) and as  acor ro-

    •  There  is no  possibi l i ty  of  accidental detonation   by  o ther

    sources such

      as

      radio signals, allowing

    • The

      "Dyna-C ut" system

      method

      of

      storing,

    handling

      and

      detonating

      the

      explosive charges makes

      the

    The

     A-Z

     Marine Casing Cutter

     is

     builtto withstand extremesh ock

    encountered  in cutting multiple

     strings of

     uncentralized conductor

pipe. D ueto the unique co nstruct ion of thistool , the rugged cutter

arms expand outwa rd up to 5 times the diameter of the tool body

and achieve m aximum stabil ity under al l type s of adverse cutt ing

conditions, including hard spo ts, eccentricity, interrupted cuts, eta.

    For

     example ,  the  13

    3

/s" casing cut ter measures only  11%"

diameter and cuts all ranges and weights of pipe through

     60".

    ADVANTAGES

    •  Cuts mult iple strings smoothly, even when each str ing is

    not concentr ic.

      ,

      Affords maximum expansion

      of

     blades

      up to 5

     time s

     body

    diameter.

    •  Rugged

      3-blade

const ruct ion provides   fast  cut at  high

    speeds.

      Cutter arms

     can be

     easi ly retracted

     by

     simply picking

     up on

    drilling  string.

      Cutter arms

     can be

     changed

     on rig floor.

    OPERATION

The A-Z  M arine Casing C utter is  simple  to   operate. Th e  tool is

run to the de sired depth and slow rotat ion is started. The pumps

    are

     turned

     on

     and,

     as the pressure in the

     tool

     increases,

      a

     piston

is actuated, m oving the cutter arm into  cutting po sition.  Rotary  speed

    is

accelerated and pump pressure is gradual ly increased unt il the

cut ter arms have expanded to thei r maximum posi t ion.

      Af ter

    finishing

     the

     cut,

     the

     tool

     is

     retracted

     by

     simply shutting off

     the

     pumps

    and picking up.

    USE

The A-Z Marine Spear is used to engage a f ish internal ly in

order that it may be  pulled  or jarred from  the  hole. It is  also used

    to reconnect casing which is

     stuck

      off bottom.(See page

     10.)

    ADVANTAGES

    The A-Z

      Marine Spear

      is

      especial ly designed

      fo r

      Marine

    Operat ions.

    The A-Z

      Marine Spear—

—Will  pass through restr ict ions in wel l heads and blowout

    preventers and

      catch  ful l  gage below.

—Easily  converts from bumper to str inger type simply by

    removing stop r ing.

Has only one w orking part in i ts rugged three-p iece con struc-

    tion.

     No

     springs,

      no

     cages,

     no

     wipers.

      ,

    OPERATION

The A-Z Sp ear is easy to ope rate. The spear is made up on

the bottom of the str ing and run into the hole. Thereupon the

    string

      is

careful ly lowered unt i l

      th e

      nose piece

      of the

      spear

enters the f ish. When the sl ips enter the f ish, a sharp decrease

of  s tr ing we ight wi l l be  noted, indicat ing that the   f ish  has  been

    entered.

When running the spear as a str inger type i t should be

lowered seve ral feet into the f ish so that a f i rm grip on the pipe

    will

be maintained and also to reduce the tendency to spl i t the

    f ish

     if

     severe

     pulling or

     jarring

     is

     encountered. Whe n running

     the

spear as a bum per type, s uff icient weight should be appl ied to

the string to insure that the bum per ring is resting solidly on top

    of

      th e

      f ish.

    Pick

up on the str ing. This act ion causes the sl ip to spread

outward on the mandrel , bit ing into and s ecurely engaging the

    f ish. The

     fish

     m ay

     then

     be

     pul led from

     th e

     hole

     or may be

     a r red

    repeatedly  if necessary.

If,  for any  reason, th e  f ish cannot  be  pulled or  jar red f rom  the

hole, drop the str ing sharply on the spear. Bumping down on

    th e

spear wi l l break the fr ict ion between the mandrel and the

slips,  al lowing the mandrel to move downward with relat ion

    to

      the slips.

With the spear in this position, rotate the string one or two

turns to the r ight and pick up. Right hand rotat ion causes the

sl ips to remain in the released posit ion, in which posit ion the

spear may be withdrawn from the

      f ish.

      The spear may be

re-engaged and released as many t imes as desired without

    coming  out of the   hole.

    RSP-30

      MARINE SPEAR

    The A-Z R SP 30

     Ma rine

Spear has a  rugged heavy duty body.

    It

     is a

     bumper type spea r designed

      fo r

     engagement

     and

      pulling

of  30" casing. The slips arecarburized to ensu re positive engage-

ment of the fish. This tool has an integral packoff

     element

      which

seals against the  casing I .D. whe n  the  slips are  set. By  sealing o ff

on the casing I .D., hydraul ic pressure may be appl ied below the

    tool which adds

lifting forc e to the fishing

     string.

     It operates the

     same

as  standard  A-Z  Marine Spears. Th e  spear may be  re-engaged  an d

released  as  many t imes as  desired without coming  out of the  hole.

    Th e  RSP30

     may be converted to

     a

RSP 36  fo r work inSS" casing

    by simply

     changing the

     slips

     and

     adding

     a bumper

     ring adaptor.

    This

conversion  may be  made without disassembly o f the  tool.

    USE

The A-Z Marine Swivel is used on f loaters to suspend the A-Z

Marine Casing Cutter in the hole and maintain it at the same

    level during  the  cutting operation.

    It

is also used  on  jackup s wh en running the A-Z  Single Trip Cu t

and Rec overy System. The swivel can be seated on the ca sing

hanger or wellhead. With the use of the compe nsator the wav e

action imposed on the vessel will not

     affect

     the vertical position

    of

      the

     cutter.

The AZ M arine Swivel comes in two de signs, the MSA-10 and

    the heavy duty MSB-10.

    CONSTRUCTION

THe MSB-10 is stronger than the MSA-10. In both tension and

    torsion

      it is

      approximately twice

     a s

      strong.

      For

     this reason

      we

strongly recommend that the MSB-10 be used in most deep

    water

appl ications especial ly w here hea vy seas, strong ocean

    currents,

      and

      other adverse factors exist.

      As the

     w ater depth

increases, the eccentric motion of the dril l string increases and

this, coupled with the   fact  that the vessel may at t imes be

misaligned with the center of the

     hole, imposes

     severe

     bending

and shock load on the swivel . The MSB-10 swivel is bui l t to

    withstand these loads.

    ADVANTAGES

    •  Insures smooth cut even  in the  roughest seas.

    • By

     accurately spacing

     out

     between

     the

     swivel

     and the

     cutting

t ip of the arm, a cut can be made at a precise level within

    fractions

      of an

      inch.

    16

    •  Sealed, o i l-bath con st ruct ion insures long, trouble f ree

operat ion and low maintenance costs.

    •  P rec is ion ro l l e r - t ype bear ings take thrus t l oads  up to

    OPERATION

The A-Z Marine Casing Cutter is run on the bottom of the

str ing. The exa ct point of cutt ing can be determ ined by mea sur-

    ing

     from

     the

     swivel

     to the

     cutting

     tip of the

     arm.

     The proper size

of   adapters for the casing hanger are then instal led on the

    swivel.

     is set on the

    swivel

      to

      allow

      the

      compensator

      to

     separate.

Slow  rotat ion of the pipe is begun, usual ly from 10 to 20 rpm,

and the pumps are turned on. The housing of the swivel , seated

in the wel lhead, remains stat ionary whi le the ma ndrel rotates

with  the string and turns the cu tter below.

    ADAPTERS

The MSB-10 Sw ivel can be used w ith adapters for all sizes of

    A-Z CASING PATCH

    USE

The A-Z Casing Patch Tool is used to connect and seal 2 strings of casing of the same

diameter. Over a period of time, due to adverse well conditions, casing deteriorates and

    becomes

     damaged beyond use.

     In

     many

     instances, it is possible to

     remove

     the

     upper

     po rtion

of  the damaged casing and, by means o f the patch tool, conne ct a new section of casing to the

bottom portion. In other instances, casing so me times sticks when going in the hole and when

    this condition occurs on a

     floater,

then it becomes necessary to remove the upper portion of

the   stuck casing  an d  re-connect below   the   ocean  floor  suspension system  b y  means  of a

casing patch in order to continue normal operations.

    ADVANTAGES

The A-Z Casing Patch is designed for use in land operations and also for use on jackup s in

    offshore

operations. A n  alternate design with extension  i s also a vailable for use on  f loaters.

The A-Z Casing Patch utilizes high grade alloy. Three packoffs assure a tight seal under

    adverse well conditions.

    OPERATION

The A-Z Casing Patch is simple to operate and maintain. The Casing Patch

     Tool

     is made

     upon

the bottom of the casing string and run into the hole un til the bottom of the casing patch is a few

    feet

above the casing to be patched. The pum ps are started and the hole is circulated clean.

    Slow

     rotation

     of the

     casing string

     is

     then begun

     and the

     casing patch

     is

     slowly lowered until

     the

    bowl

     of the

     patch engages

     th e

     low er string

     and

     bumps

     up

     against

     the

     stop

     in the

     upper part

     of

    the

bowl. When the casing patch shoulders up, a definite indication can be noted on the

    weight

     indicator.

     A

     strain

     is

     then taken

     on the

     casing string.

     The

     casing

     is

     then pressure-tested

    after which

     normal operations are resumed.

    For

detailed operational procedure used in setting the casing patch on floaters , please

    USE

    The A-Z

      Type

R Dressing Tool and Pilot Mill has two uses:

    1. It is used  to smooth and

     bevel

the top of a cut  fish prior  to

    setting a casing patch.

    2.

It is used to mill stuck wash pipe, l iners, casing, and screens.

     DV NT GES

Fo r dressing, the bottom of the cutting element is dressed at

    45°  The

     resulting angle

     cut on the

     casing prevents damage

     to

    the packoff

      elements in the

     casing  patch.

The nose piece is provided with stabilizer blades to insure

    proper

     centralization

     of the

     cutting element.

     The

     O.D.

     of

     these

    blades

      is

     generally

      V a

    less than

      the  I.D.  of the

      casing

      to be

    milled.

The A-Z Type R Pilot Mill and Dressing Tool is extremely

versatile and, in special cases, can be used with over-size

    cutting elements

     to cut

     several sizes

     of

      casing.

Cutting elements are easily changed on the rig floor.

    USE

    The A-Z

     Dual Rock  Type   Underreamer

      is

     used

     fo r

     drilling

      and

    underreaming simultaneously in soft formations.

In  special app l icat ions,

      it can be

     used

      for

     drilling

      an d

     under-

reaming short sect ions of hard formation, such as sett ing

anchor pi l ing, underwater storage tanks and other marine

    structures.

    ADVANTAGES

    •  Combines  two  operat ions  in one —

     drilling

      and  under-

    reaming.

    •  El iminates need for large blowout p reventers.

    •  Utilizes jet drilling principle.

    • One set of cutter arms w ill underream seve ral sizes of hole

by   simply changing gauge l inks and piston stop.

      Cutter arms

     can be

     easi ly changed

      on rig

      floor.

     .

By   combining two operat ions into one, the A-Z Dual Rock

Type Und erreamer s aves r ig t ime whe n sett ing surfa ce casing.

At   the same t ime, by el iminat ing the need for large blowout

    preventers, t ime

     to

     nipple

     up and

     tear down

     is

     great ly reduce d.

In   addition, the rental or purchase price of the large preventers

    is   eliminated.

Th e  exclusive l inkage feature  of the A-Z   Dual Underreamer

makes i t possible, by simply changing gau ge l inks and piston

stop, to use only on e size cutter arm for al l open ings, a featu re

    which reduces cutter inventory.

In addit ion to a jet bi t, the A -Z Dual Un derream er ut i lizes a jet

sub. Nozzles between the cutter arms and rock bit are so

directed that a jet stream of dril ling f luid is in contact w ith each of

the underreamer cones at al l t imes, cleaning these elements
