Industry angry at TVnews and dailiesThere are areas of the music business wehave sadly neglected. For some time now,we have watched and not commented on thelack of interest shown by the television and

press media in Canada when it comes to Cana-dian artists and recordings. In fact in manyareas of the entertainment business, there isonly a token gesture on the part of thenews and entertainment departments of localTV stations and the national news depart-ments to cover national events involvingCanadian entertainers.

The dailies across Canada and their newsservices have also shown lack of interest inthe potential in what is now the largest enter-tainment media in the world, the recordbusiness.

. . . the prophets of doom, the messengers ofmediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who havealready demonstrated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership,"

The New York Times is certainly an out-standing publication when it comes to enter-tainment and records. The U.S. networksare keenly aware of the new country explo-sion now happening as well as the eagerinterest by the public in pop music. InCanada, entertainment editors and reportersare somewhat short of being professionaland lack the ability to find the news. Thea-tre, movies and art often dominate the tinyentertainment sections of the dailies. Manyof the stories concern foreign endeavour anda token amount of space is given to Canadians. We will be concentrating on this sad state ofaffairs in RPM in the future and are alreadymaking moves to contact some of the peoplewho can cause action and get results.

The CRTC has regulated 30% Canadian musicon AM and is about to look at a fair percent-age for FM and have also made the TV percentage 60% in prime time. It would be interest-ing for the CRTC to look at the networks andlocal stations and their coverage of Canadianentertainment. It is also interesting to see the great amountof entertainment ads in the dailies and thesmall amount of editorial copy that surround

WEA CANADA LEANS ONNEW DIAMONDBACK LIDWEA Music of Canada have regrouped theirforces after their initial stiffing adventurewith Diamondback's entry into the discbusiness "Just My Way (Of Lovin' You)",and are now confident of breaking the groupwith their new single, "Wait My Time". TheMike McKenna group is comprised of PeterMcGraw, vocalist; Stan Endersby, secondguitarist; drummer Rick Love; Scott Cushnie, keyboards; and vocals; and Howie Smith onbass.

POLYDOR & RPM HOSTPREMIERE OF "TOMMY"Polydor and RPM will co -host the Canadianpremiere of the "Tommy" film as part ofthe kick-off activities for CommunicationEleven (C11). The showing will take placeFriday March 21st., before an invitedaudience of the Canadian music industry. The invitation list will be compiled byLori Bruner of Polydor and will consistof those attending C11 and members ofthe Toronto media, dealers etc. Ticketswill be allocated on a first come firstserved basis. The soundtrack of the Ken Russell di-rected "Tommy" film is distributed world-wide on the Polydor label. The film isbased on the rock -opera by Pete Town-shend and The Who and is a Robert Stig-wood production, with production creditsgoing to both Stigwood and Russell.Principals in the film are Oliver Reed, AnnMargret and Roger Daltrey as Tommy andfeatures Elton John as the Pinball Wizardwith guest stars Eric Clapton, John En-twistle, Keith Moon, Paul Nicholas, RobertPowell, Pete Townshend and Tina Turneras well as The Who. Jack Nicholson 'ap-pears as a special gyest.

the ad rip off that dailies are part of. As acontrast, the sports section of the dailies isfilled with editorial and gets a very smallad revenue from sports clients.

In some cases, these dailies have a monopolyon advertising, but no monopoly on editorswho' can produce an entertainment sectionthat is more than a few stories and reviewsby critics whose capabilities are in question. The industry should take a stand on presscooperation and work to make the CRTCaware of the lack of interest in Canadianentertainment on the part of television news.

A whole new cause presents itself to theindustry, and it is opportune to work nowto make some drastic changes, because theindustry is incensed. Now is the time whena great deal of good can be done by exertingpressure to change the attitude of the tele-vision news departments and the entertain-ment editors of many of the dailies.

Fighting apathy and a lack of professionalismshould be easy, and the trade has a great dealof power to make these changes .. , and verysoon.

NOMINATIONS AND VOTINGFOR THE JUNO AWARDS

(REVISED)FEBRUARY 11TH, 1975

Last year, Juno Award Presentations were asked byvarious segments of the industry to revamp the sys-tem by which winners were selected for the JunoAwards. A Committee was formed last year to selectthe artists who would appear on the Juno AwardsPresentation and set up the categories. After nego-tiations with the CBC, it was agreed that the JunoAwards would be televised by the CBC on March 24,1975 from the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, situated onthe grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition. The Committee was given the responsibility of select-ing the Awards that would be televised, establishingthe criteria by which performers would be selectedto appear on the program and introduce a new con-cept of nominations and voting.

The Committee has now become the Canadian MusicAwards Association, a non-profit chartered associa-tion, with six board members. The president is MelShaw. Other members comprise: Greg Hambleton,Martin Onrot, Leonard Rarribeau, George Struth andRoss Reynolds.

8 RPM 2212175COVER STORY

(It's still what's in the groovesthat really counts) by Ritchie YorkeThe other night I found myself on thestage at Maple Leaf Gardens, just a few feetbehind the throbbing Marvin Gaye rhythmsection which was laying back into "Let'sGet It On" and Christ knows they sure were. The drummer was a pure delight, poetry inmollyduker motion, punching into the snarewith the right hand and vibrating the highhat with his left, everything back to frontbut it came out sounding like he was chew-ing through the creative bottom line oftwenty years of popular music. He wasn'ta young man either but he knew his chops. And he and the bass player were layingdown some numbers together that wereclassics in themselves. The enshrining of thecontemporary urban blues.

When you get right down to it, and that'swhat I'm rapping about right now, you'vegot to face the fact that Motown Recordshas contributed more to this music thanany other record company anywhere. Theirtrack record is simply beyond comparison.Other labels have had their memorablemoments but Motown made a business outof laying down the most ambitious lineof rock singles, one on top of another, untilthey were so far ahead of everybody thatthe competition ran out of steam. Since1960, Motown has given us a collection ofclassics strung together by one commondenominator - each of them demonstratingthe finest song, performance, arrangement, production and overall polish of its time. The Motown history has yet to be written(and what an absorbing epic it is bound to be)but it has been obvious for several years thatthe creative souls at Motown possess anexpertise and overview of pop music that istotally unique. Many of the Motown classicsare mini -rock symphonies, and that's ashigh a compliment as can be paid any rockproducer. They are unquestioned works ofart, landmarks in a music form which has sooften floundered around in mediocrity.Motown has always shown the way totomorrow and is still doing so. As theyused to say on the Gordy singles' logo: "It's

what's in the grooves that counts". It:s allthat counts in the long haul. The recent release of eight Motown Antholo-gies only serves to underline the significanceof the company's amazing qualitative out-put. Without batting an eyelid, I'd jumpright in and say this is the most importantcollection of Oldies ever released by anycompany. I'm confident that most of myreaders share that view but it would do noharm at this point to quickly recap thehighlights of this outstanding Anthologyrelease.Smokey Robinson And The Miracles(M 793R3) is a three record compilation ofthis superb group's big ones. Between Dec.1960 and the end of '71, the Miracles hadracked up 32 chart hits (source: Joel Whit -burn's Top R&B Records 1949-71) includingsuch classics as "You've Really Got A HoldOn Me", "The Tracks Of My Tears", "OooBaby Baby", "I Second That Emotion" and"What's So Good About Goodbye". No won-der Bob Dylan once described Smokey Robin-son as "America's greatest living poet". Hiswords are an education in lyric writing.

Four Tops (M -809A3) were another standoutMotown vocal group and its anthology ofthree albums features historic chartbreakerslike "Baby I Need Your Loving", "I Can'tHelp Myself", "Reach Out I'll Be There",and "It's The Same Old Song". FantasticHolland -Dozier -Holland tunes deliveredwith stunning impact. As everyone knows, Diana Ross and theSupremes (M9 -794A3) are the most success-ful girl group ever, and at one point in the60's, they had nine consecutive number onesingles, one of the hottest streaks the popmusic scene has ever witnessed. They kickedit off with "Where Did Our Love Go" andflew on through "Baby Love", "Come SeeAbout Me", "Stop In The Name Of Love","Back In My Arms Again", et al. All of theirtracks are marked by scintillating productionand powerful vocal delivery.

Gladys Knight and the Pips (M-79252) was anact brought to Motown after several R&B hits

in the late 50's, and the Detroit writers andproducers set it on a trail which has burnedever since. Among their most impressivePerformances at Motown were "I Heard ItThrough the Grapevine", "Just Walk In MyShoes" and "Neither One Of Us".

Jr. Walker And The All Stars (M -786R2) estab-lished a sound which remains unequalled tothis day. This double album includes dyna-mite classics such as "Shotgun", "Shoot YourShot", "I'm A Roadrunner" and "WhatDoes It Take" (most recently nicked byJohn Lennon for "Whatever Gets YouThrough the Night") genuine masterpieceswhich captured the motion of the 60's.The Temptations (M782A3) have beenthrough a kaleidoscope of changes sincetheir first single "The Way You Do TheThings You Do" in May 1962. They pi o-duced great rock vocal group shuffle hits ofthe 60's like "My Girl", "It's Growing","Ain't Too Proud to Beg", "I'm LosingYou", "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" and "IWish It Would Rain" and then blazed intopsychedelia with "Ball of Confusion", "PapaWas A Rollin' Stone", "Psychadelic Shack"and "Runaway Child Running Wild". Thisthree -volume Anthology captures theirmany classic moments. As far as gal vocal groups are concerned, you'd have to go a long way to top MarthaReeves & The Vandellas (M -778R2). Marthaof course is now endeavoring to launch a solocareer with MCA Records and ultimatelyshe'll make it. I'm not so sure if she'll everbe able to surpass the unbelievable dynam-ics of such classic sizzlers as "Heat Wave","Quicksand", "Nowhere to Run", "Dancingin the Street" and "Jimmy Mack". Theysimply don't make singles like that anymoreand it's a tragedy. And then we comes to Marvin Gaye(CM 791 A3). I've always considered Marvinto be one of the most remarkable vocaltalents of popular music; his prolific workis vastly underrated. Yet he's had more than30 hits since '62 and another dozen withvarious female combinations, includingTammi Terrell and Kim Weston. His workhas evolved from the nitty gritty guts of"Stubborn Kind of Fellow", "Can I Get AWitness" and "I'll Be Doggone" to thesuperior sophistication of "What's Going On","Grapevine" and "Inner City Blues". He isclearly one of the most articulate spokesmenof the war children generation, yet this doesnot detract from his devastating vocal style. To my ear, Marvin Gaye is one of the half -dozen greatest male voices in the history of20th Century popular music. Certainly Ican't come up with any current blues singerwho could rival his ability. As Marvin him-self once sang with Tammi Terrell, there"Ain't nothing like the real thing". And "that'sjust about where it's at".Any radio station, press critic or recordstore in the country not making a big noiseabout the release of these Motown Antholo-gies is simply out of touch with contempor-ary music. These songs are the heart and theguts and the soul of the music - if they'renot in your disc collection, then yousimply don't have a representative gatheringof rock on record. The most amazing thingis that despite the often stormy passage oftime, the Motown classics stand up just aswell now as those magic moments when wefirst heard them. You can't say that aboutmany other records.

One of these days soon, I'm going to puttogether my own collection of Motown'sfinest moments. These records were justabout the most important part of my rockmusic education and experience. Andprobably yours too.

playlist the discussion frequently turns intoa heated argument. Music and the length ofplaylists generally is the one area of program-ming that is discussed and argued openly, andis a paradox to the well founded belief thatprogram directors will not divulge theirsecrets to anyone. While it is true that mostmusic and program people will not pass ontheir special musical formulas to others inthe industry, the individual records thatare played and the number of records on acurrent list are always available and open toinspection. Just a moment's thought makesthis seeming contradiction quite understand-able. Ego plays a part in that the average m.d.or p.d. likes to be considered a hit -maker, sohe's quite proud to talk about the new pickshe has added to his station; if no chart isprinted one can still listen to a station andquite easily determine the number of recordsthat are being played at any one time; com-parison of other charts also makes it quiteeasy to determine the musical programmingpolicies of a station and the timetable usedfor adding or deleting specific records.Since the general music information aboutmost stations is readily available, or easilyaccessible, we must then turn our considera-tion to the reasons behind the length of theplaylist and the type of music that is being

How many newrecords should be added each week? Beforeattempting to answer any of these questions,it should be stated that in my opinion thereis no exact answer to any one of them. Thereis no one perfect formula or perfect lengthplaylist, there is only an attempt at per-fection to satisfy a specific need or compet-itive situation! Each market, each radiostation, each situation must be consideredseparately and individually, and the properprogramming determinations and decisionsshould be made only after extensive research.I've stated it before, but it's worth repeating. Each market and each station is different, andprogramming should always reflect thatdifference. BUFFALO'S WBEN-FMGAINING IN TORONTOThere has been some concern amongToronto broadcasters over the inroadsbeing made into the Toronto area byBuffalo's WBEN-FM. It has been suggest-ed that the recent loss in ratings by someToronto FM outlets was due largely tothe popularity growth of the Buffalostation. To add a little salt to the wound,WBEN-FM and two other Buffalo FMers,WENY and WBLK, have reportedly ap-plied for membership in the Bureau ofMeasurement (BBM).A check of several youth -oriented com-mercial entities including Eaton's youngmen's shops, Bay Stores, clothing stores, health clubs etc., in the Golden Horse-shoe, have indicated an almost total turn-over to WBEN-FM, which features a syn-dicated "constant music" service. Cana-dian advertisers have latched on to thisnew powerhouse where they are offeredone minute of airtime for only $3.00,which is considerably less than the goingrate on Toronto stations. One youngCanadian observer noted: "I like to lis-ten to the Buffalo station because I hearmusic and excitement that I can't get onany Toronto station. I'm tired of ding-dongs trying to lay psychic trips on me.Culture to me is music - my kind of mu-sic".The Buffalo situation will no doubt be-come a part of the discussion at theCRTC public hearing on the proposedFM Regulations, March llth.

be determined by market and competitivefactors. Obviously, smaller markets willhave different needs and requirements thanlarger. Unfortunately, too many in theindustry base their decisions on the apparentreasons for success of leading stations inother markets, and copying becomes thecom-pelling factor rather than professionalunderstanding of what works and why. Theresult has been that if some leading stationsin large markets go to, or have longer play -lists, you can be certain that a whole batchof stations all over North America willfollow that lead like puppy dogs or sheep. And that's wrong! Short list, long list, halfgold, part gold, no gold, no albums, severalalbums, are not the questions that should beasked. What is right for your particular situa-tion should be the only consideration.Personally, I have never been an advocate ofthe shorter play list, though I know that manyof the finest and most successful stations inNorth America have relied on them for years.I believe, rather, that within a spectrum ofmusic every single item that fits the formatand demographic requirements should beplayed and should be played as early aspossible. It makes no sense to me to wait un-til the whole world has played an obvious hit, when you know it is going to be played onyour station and it is available to you. Yetthere are an enormous number of stationsthat will sit on a record until it has reachedthe top ten most everywhere before they willtake the chance and add it to their list. Ifthey know they are going to play it, what thehell are they waiting for? The answer is,most of the waiters don't trust their ownjudgements. I don't think, though, thatthe short list or the long list is the major con-cern that programmers should have. Rather,I think they should be more intent on findingall of the music that fits their target demo-graphic situation, and subsequently developingthe most satisfactory and competitive formulafor offering it to their audience. And thatapplies to all formats - popular, adult, country and good music. Of course, theproblem is that you've got to know whatyou're looking for and its relative value, butrecognizing and understanding that is cer-tainly much more important and valuablethan simply looking around to find somethingto copy. Next week we'll have a go at quality.

CANADIAN BRASSIn ParisBoot Master Concert Series BMC 3003-KSome may question the reviewing of aclassical album but "different strokes fordifferent folks" and, really, it would bene-

fit many of the rock, acid, progressive, pop etc. oriented programmers, if theygave a listen to what must be the finestCanadian classical album on the market.Producer Eleanor Sniderman has served upthe Masters (Bach, Handel etc.) in an ear -pleasing manner that almost removes thebrass from the brass. Doing it the Snider -man way, Frederick Mills and RonaldRomm on trumpets, trombonist EugeneWatts, Graeme Page on French horn, and Charles Daellenbach on tuba, theseinstruments, usually manipulated insymphony orchestras to scare the hellout of you, suddenly acquire a soft andalmost velvety timbre. The set was pro-duced in Paris, France, which cuts downon some of the Canadian content creditswith the exception of Handel's "Halle-lujah Chorus" and Purcell's "Sonata InThree Movements", arranged by Brass -man Mills. Regardless of the non -Cana-dian content. there are exceptional cutsincluding "In Pride Of May", a lilting andvery effective Madrigal at 1:59, and a de-lightful Dahl "Intermezzo" at 3:13, bothof which would shake morning or even-ing drive listeners. Sales on this albumhave been reported as "very brisk" - anindication that there is a great deal oflistener value in the package.

Toronto's newest and poshest country show-place, Molly & Me, has been gaining in popu-larity over the last few weeks since theyopening. No official opening plans asyet, but now that Albert Nightingale is welland fit once again, he and his wife Molly arereally making things hum at the club. Theyjust recently showcased Broadland's DarleneMadill, who has shown good chart actionwith her single, "Knock On My Door". Lotsof good things happening out at the BloorStreet West club. We should have a featurestory shortly.Little Dickey Damroi has a record label thatbelieves in him. He's never seen so muchaction since joining Marathon. Now Damronis becoming a household word throughoutthe Maritime Provinces with his latestsingle, "Mother, Love & Country".Larry Kunkel was in Toronto not too longago, producing a session at RCA's TorontoStudios for Leroy Anderson, and he's comingback for the Junos. Larry's own Drylandersgroup have scored well with their album andthe single culled from it, "Joanne". Thegroup were back into Calgary's Sound WestStudios for another session.

One of the first country acts to move intothe new and lush surroundings of Toronto'sSounds Interchange is Tim Daniels whorecords for Kangi Records The label'sbossman, Hank Kushmier, has a great deal offaith in this strong pop/country voice andhe will be mounting a sizeable promotion tobring his sound front and centre.Have you noticed how many excellentCanadian country singles are now floodingthe market. Programmers are now complain-ing that there's so much good stuff thatmost of them have incfeased their Canadiancontent to bver 45%. My, how times havechanged. Now if we can only get the damnthings out into the hands of responsibleretailers.
