He was an employee of the federal government for over 31 years, working as a wildlife biologist with the US Forest Service in Arkansas, West Virginia, and Mississippi, became Assistant Refuge Manager at Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge in 1999, and then retired as Refuge Manager of Reelfoot and Lake Isom National Wildlife Refuges in 2007. Randy has been married to the former Marylin Partain for 30 years. Randy and Marylin are members of First Presbyterian Church in Brownsville where they are active in the choir. Randy’s interests include playing the guitar, working on family genealogy, and paying attention to their 3 cats. The Carver Gymnasium has usually played host to a variety of sport games, political debates and educational seminars. A few weekends ago however, ambiance in the form of a makeshift stage adorned with white Christmas lights, green shrubbery, dining room tables and soft jazz music hit the gym. For a little while that particular evening, the gym would transform into the setting for the 2010 Clay Evans Scholarship Fund, Inc. Debutante Cotillion. Debutantes this year were, Destinee Turner and her escort Jamal Delk, Diamond Robinson with her escort Johnny Blair, Lakesha Vaughn with her escort Brian Currie, Chabrie’ Boyd with her escort Shuntavious Brand and Kelsey Smith with her escort Carltavious Lewis. Debutantes in waiting were Chardonnay Demoss with her escort Jateryance Smith and Jessica Maclin with her escort Joshua Thorpe. The event kicked off with opening remarks and an invocation by Rev. Rickey Reed, who is the president of the Clay Evans Scholarship fund. Toastmaster Rev. Undrae Johnson continued the night by presenting a performance of talented high school students who were dubbed “The Brownsville Temptations.” A special dance performance by the debutantes followed the Brownsville Temptation’s performance. D e b u t a n t e Chardonnay Demoss followed with a solo vocal performance. The Debutantes in Waiting and the 2010 Cotillion Debutantes were presented with their parents and escorts after a special Debutante Question and Answer session. The Debutantes had a special dance with their fathers onstage, before the fathers switched with the escorts. Destinee Turner was crowned this year’s 2010 Miss Clay Evans Debutante. First runner- up and Miss Congeniality was Kelsey Smith, second runner-up was Diamond Robinson and third runner-up was Chabria Boyd. The Clay Evans scholarship gives $3,000 a year to C-students that show that they have the will and determination to succeed, however, they may not have the means. It took the selfless efforts of the participants to make the event a success. “We thank these children tonight for their participation,” Clay Evans Scholarship fund board member, Sarita Hafford said. “These children were not forced, they came here because they wanted to do it. It’s hard these days to get children involved with adults.” The board consists of President Rev. Rickey Reed, Vice President Rev. Kevin Barken, Quince A.
