A Reminder…
Culturally transparent Exports
E.g. programmes whose format and content is not changed when exported to another country.
Support the idea of the Global Village
The world as a melting pot of “all” cultural influences.
Only the names and presenters change.
Many programmes which fall into this category are those with a global capitalist emphasis (i.e. making money is good & business is extremely competitive and ruthless!) e.g. Deal or No Deal!
Hybrid Programmes E.g. programmes the
content of which is localised even if format is ‘foreign’.
Prove and disprove globalisation
Formats & content is “glocalised”
Show how global and local cultural influences on people can intermingle
They reflect the difference in cultural and moral ideology which survives the globalising trend!
They offer a fusion of the global and the local!
Activity – in pairs. Use the internet to find three hybrid
programmes. (Examples not used in class!) Your three examples must be different to each
other in the following ways;1. One must be culturally transparent.2. One must be an imported format with some
minor cultural changes.3. One must be an imported format with more
significant cultural changes that reflect ideological differences between the nation whre the product was first shown & the new host nation.
