Erica Berthou is a senior partner with Kirkland &Ellis LLP. She is widely recognized as one of the

country’s leading attorneys in the field of privateinvestment fund formation.

A dual Swedish-American citizen, Ms. Berthou wasborn on a small island north of Sweden, where shegrew up camping with her family, learning wildernesssurvival skills, and becoming an accomplishedequestrian. From this rural childhood, she went on tograduate from Stockholm University, UppsalaUniversity Faculty of Law, King’s College London, andNew York University School of Law, which sheattended on a scholarship sponsored by the royalfamily of Sweden.

Ms. Berthou began her career as a tax attorney inSweden, where she practiced for several years.During a consortium meeting, she was noticed by ateam at Debevoise & Plimpton and recruited to jointhe firm in New York.

The offer came at an opportune time for her andher husband, whom she had met at King’s College.“My husband is from Zimbabwe. He is from adifferent continent, religion, skin color, and foodculture from me. It was the best thing of my lifeto meet him. He introduced me to the world.”However, 20 years ago, she says, “it was not easyfor him to assimilate in Sweden. I was surprised athow hard it was to be different.” The new jobprovided the chance for the couple to live in aninternational city.

When she came to the U.S., learning to work in adifferent language and adapting to culturaldifferences proved a formidable challenge. Ms.Berthou found herself needing to make majoradjustments to understand the different socialconventions of New York and America, and thediverse backgrounds of her colleagues and clients. Her Swedish accent and expressions became asource of amusement to her teammates at work, andshe appreciated the humor, as it reminded her not totake herself too seriously. She went on to be globalhead of the investment funds group at her firm priorto joining Kirkland & Ellis in December 2017.

Ms. Berthou travels often for work, with clients inLatin America, Europe, and Asia. She representsmany premier global alternative asset managementfirms including Antin Infrastructure Partners,Blackstone Alternative Asset Management, TheCarlyle Group, EQT Partners, and Oaktree CapitalManagement. Among her many awards, Ms. Berthouwas selected as a “2018 Distinguished Leader” bythe New York Law Journal as part of theirProfessional Excellence Awards: she was the onlyfund formation attorney to receive this honor.

Ms. Berthou and her husband have two sons, andtheir extended family has become truly global: theyhave relatives in India, Hong Kong, the U.S., SouthAfrica, Zimbabwe, and Turkey, and represent, shesays, “pretty much every religion.” Ms. Berthou isalso a member of the board of directors of the USACycling Foundation and an elite women’s cycling team.

One To World isproud to be

designated by theU.S. Department ofState as the offi-cial Coordinator ofEnrichment Programsfor Fulbright granteesin the greater NewYork area.

In 1991, we approached Senator J. WilliamFulbright with the idea of creating a specialevent to raise the visibility of the Fulbrightvision in New York City. With his endorsementand support, our first annual Fulbright AwardsDinner was held that year, and the Senator washonored at the Dinner in 1993. His wife, HarrietMayor Fulbright, has served as Honorary Chairof the event since his death in 1995, and washerself honored in 2000. The One To WorldFulbright Awards Dinner continues to serve as acelebration of Senator Fulbright’s ideals and inspiresthose present with a renewed commitment to carryon the work he began.

In his words, “It doesn’t take many to make adifference. A single leader or a few legislators orwriters who know something about what othercountries are like can contribute to making a wisedecision or to forestalling a disastrous one.” Thevision and action of Senator Fulbright led to thecreation of the Fulbright Program by the U.S.Congress in 1946, following World War II. TheSenator conceived of this international educationalexchange program as a way to prevent future wars.

ONE TO WORLD AND THE ULBRIGHT TRADITIONFFor more than 70 years, the Fulbright Program hasprovided funds for students, scholars, andprofessionals to undertake study, research, andteaching abroad in more than 160 countries.Approximately 390,000 individuals—Americans andcitizens of other countries—have received Fulbrightgrants since the program’s inception, with fundingprovided by Congressional appropriations and partnercountry governments. Fulbright grants areadministered by organizations including the U.S.Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department ofEducation, and the Institute of International Education.

Once Fulbright grantees arrive in the New Yorkarea from countries across the globe, One To Worldconnects them with Americans through diverseprograms in homes, classrooms, businesses, andcommunities. Our work is essential to furtheringthe Fulbright vision of peace through internationaleducation and understanding.

“I believe that there is a direct connectionbetween the quality of relationships whichinternational students develop while they are in the United States, and the quality ofthe economic and political alliances theywill make in the years to come. For thisreason, I commend Metro International[now One To World] to you. ”

Senator J. William Fulbright

Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side,Cornelia Connelly Center (CCC) champions girls

at risk, empowering them to realize their fullpotential, from middle school through college andbeyond. They operate a school for girls in grades4 through 8, and then offer a comprehensivegraduate support program that provides financial, academic, and emotional support all the waythrough college graduation.

One To World’s Global Classroom has been proud topartner with CCC for the past two years, bringing theworld into the classroom for these young women.

During the 2018-19 school year, Global Classroom atCCC focused on systemic gender inequality around theglobe, as well as right here in New York City.

Every week 7th- and 8th-grade students met a GlobalGuide who spoke on an issue that affects women in herhome country. For example, Huaiyu, a Global Guidefrom China, discussed gender expectationsand beauty standards in her home country, andVeera, from Finland, talked about policies topromote gender equality in her home country.

For their final project, students took the lessonsthey had learned from Global Guides and thoughtabout how they could have a positive impact ongirls and women in their own community.

The 8th-graders chose to focus on helping homelesswomen, creating resource pamphlets and collectingtoiletries, socks, feminine hygiene products, andother necessities from their friends and family to bedonated to the Bowery Mission.

Cornelia Connelly Center instills in these youngwomen a sense of their own worth and potential;Global Classroom shows them how to take theirfirst steps to changing the world.

“Even though my students live in a very diverse city, they don't often have the opportunity to learnabout people beyond the borders of their smallneighborhoods. Global Classroom brings that diversity into their lives and exposes them to arange of countries and people around the world."
