Olympic Values and The Hollies

The Olympics will not be seen again in Britain for many years, however Olympic and Paralympic Values will always be important in our lives and should be part of the lasting legacy.

Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Movement, saw in the Games an ideal opportunity to develop a set of universal principles – or Values – that could be applied to education and to society as a whole, as well as to sport itself.

These Values are: ● respect – fair play; knowing our own limits; and taking care of our health and the environment

● excellence – how to give the best of ourselves, on the field of play or in life; taking part; and pro-gressing according to our own objectives ● friendship – how, through sport, to understand each other despite any differences

The Paralympic Values are based on the history of the Paralympic Games and the tradition of fair play and honourable sports competition.

They are:

• courage

• determination

• inspiration

• equality.

It seems to us at The Hollies that these Values apply to everyone – not just top-class athletes.

Few of us would argue for example, that equality is a good thing, or that friendships help us to feel good about ourselves and others. Let’s face it – none of us would get very far without a bit of determination every now and then.

A Haiku is a form of Japanese Poetry that comprises of three lines and follows a five-seven-five syllable pattern. Although simple on the surface these poems often reveal universal truths. The key to their success is in their use of clear and direct images, often from the natural world, which are used to connect to wider issues.

Here are some excellent examples created by our own Key Stage Three students.

Our New Behaviour for Learning Policy

We have a culture of high expectation at The Hollies and want the best possible out-comes for our pupils. We now have a new policy for 'Behaviour for Learning'. I would like to extend an invitation to all of our pupils' parents and carers to come into The Hollies and read this policy.

Dyslexia Concern Form

Paralympic Value: Equality

As part of our Dyslexia Friendly Action Plan we now have a form available for parents and carers to use if you have any concerns that you would like to put into writing.

This form is just an additional way in which you can contact school.

Copies of the form are available from the main school office.

And finally ………….

Staff and pupils would like to send a Good Luck message to The Hollies’ very own ambassador for the London 2012 Olympics. Mrs Spensley, our Headteacher will be spending her summer holidays supporting the Olympic Games. She will be working as a volunteer, driving medal winners to the press centre.

We will all be looking out for her

during the TV coverage!

Y11 Leavers trip to Alton Towers

To celebrate the recent success of some Year 11 pupils, Hannah Hill, Brandon Dace, Ben Moore, Hollie Jones, Ellie Webb, Ashley Clowes, Jake Johnson and Jack Phillips on the completion of the Raising Aspirations Workshop or RAW, a trip to Alton Towers was arranged. Unfortunately not all pupils could attend the trip but the ones who could had a brilliant day especially watching the staff get soaked on the log flume! Staff and pupils both agreed that this was a great way to end their time with us at the Hollies. We wish them all well in their chosen career paths

Cook’s Corner At The Hollies! Food For Olympians

Do you know that the Olympic Organisers are having to provide special menus for athletes coming from all over the world? Organisers have had to think about religious and moral beliefs, social custom and tradition. It’s important to eat familiar foods so that competitors are in peak physical condition before their events.

At the Hollies we have chosen to look at foods from other countries and one of our favourites this term has been Baked Samosas. Samosas are enjoyed by people who live in India and parts of Asia – but we have enjoyed them as well.

Baked Samosas

METHOD

1. To make dough: In a large bowl combine flours, buttermilk, oil, salt. Bring ingredients together

into dough. Knead for 5 minutes until it has softened and is springy to touch. Allow to rest at room

temperature for approximately 15 minutes.

2. To make filling: Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and garlic, mix in the spices and fry

until soft.

3. Add the vegetables, season and stir well until coated. Add the stock, cover and simmer for

approximately 15 minutes until cooked.

4. Preheat oven to degrees 200 f/gas mark 8.

5. Roll the dough into a short cylinder (empty toilet roll size). Slice into 2. Slice each half into 2, so

you have 4 bits. Roll each bit into a ball. Flatten ball into a disc, then, on a floured surface roll into a 7

inch wide circle. Cut into 2 semi-circles.

6. Place a tablespoon or so of filling in the centre of one of the semi-circles. Have a small bowl of

water handy, dip your finger in the water and run it along the edges of the semi-circle. Arrange semi-

circle so the flat side is facing away from you. Grab the left corner and fold it over filling in a triangular

motion, so that this corner lands on the bottom right side of the filling. Do the same with the other

corner. Squeeze the bottom shut and fold over, sealing with water. If you like, seal using a fork.

Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Repeat, until you have 8 big samosas ready for baking!

7. Spray oil over before baking or brush with oil, bake for 15 minutes at 200 f/gas mark 8, then turn

heat down to 180 f/gas mark 5 and bake for 10 more minutes. You can flip them over just before you

turn the heat down if you like.

Value:

Courage

In light of the 2012 Olympics just around the corner we are incorporating the Olympic and Paralympic values within our curriculum and daily life at The Hollies.

As you will be aware from following our Herald articles we are trying to change pupils’ mindsets by giving them different sporting opportunities in sports they would never think of participating in.

This term’s project is Golf.

The activity is not the main focus: the focus is adhering to rules in different environments where people would not expect our pupils to conform.

Taking pupils to private golf clubs where they may feel out of their comfort zone is the real challenge: it would be quite easy for the pupils to refuse to attend but so far so good. Pupils have been on courses and driving ranges across the county, adhering to rules and, more importantly, showing one of the Paralympics values - Courage.

What is courage? Courage is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. We are proud of the pupils as they have shown courage to do well in this project.

This is a transferable skill to be used in everyday life and one to be particularly valued.

Keep it up boys and one day we hope to see one of you in the British Open!

Mr. Rice, Mr. Simpson

“To build a future, you have to know your past.” Otto Frank

This term the pupils have been studying the Holocaust, and have linked it to the Olympic value of equality. Pupils have been looking at their own rights and responsibilities within society today, and reflecting how some minority groups throughout history have had their human rights taken away.

We have studied the effects of Nazism on Germany during WWII, and how the Jewish people and many other minority groups were persecuted. Students have used a wide range of resources, from film and documentaries, to Anne Frank’s diary to help understand the Holocaust and the impact it still has on the world today.

Mr Nation would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students for all their hard work this year in History….and we aim to keep discovering the past, so we can build our own futures.

RAW—(Raising Aspirations Workshop)

Twelve Year 11 pupils have successfully completed an intensive Edexcel Workskills programme to improve their learning about the world of work and at the same time, improve their examination results.

They completed modules in enterprise, health and safety, job application and working as a team. In the process they raised money for Katharine House Hospice by baking and selling cakes.

Well done to them all!

Paralympic Value: Determination

Congratulations to Jake and Macaulay for raising £222.60 by completing a 10mile

sponsored bike ride!

On Sunday 6th May, we were determined to complete the Cycle Challenge in aid of Katharine House Hospice, Stafford. We cycled 10 miles from the Hospice at Stafford Hospital, along the cycle tracks out to Derrington and back.

We set off at 11am and arrived in Derrington at 12pm where we had a short break at the village hall, with refreshments, before returning back at 1pm.

Luckily the weather was on our side, and we managed to stay dry! It was a challenge at times, but we were all determined to succeed for our own goals, as well as the hospice. All together we managed to raise a grand total of £222.60!!

This was a massive success and donation from the Hollies.

The 2012 Sponsored Cycling Challenge had a record 484 cyclists this year, and we were the only people to represent a school.

Mr Nation, Jake and Macaulay Year 11 pupils

When we heard that the Olympic Torch was going to progress past the Hollies we thought this was an opportunity not to be missed! One of those ‘memory moments’….

As the Torch was to pass the school at 5:27pm on Wednesday 30th May, we were able to invite pupils, families and friends to this occasion. To make it extra special we even put on a BBQ and cakes.

The event did not disappoint and it is indeed something we can all remember, and even tell our children about in the future.

We now look forward to seeing the flame in London and other venues when the Games begin!

Olympic Values - Mathematics

For Maths if there is one Olympic Value that is really necessary, it would have to be

determination. Maths is the sort of subject where you often

meet stumbling blocks. With determination you can overcome these

and go on to achieve success.

2012 is the year of the Olympics, using all of the digits each time, can you make all the

numbers from 1 to 5.

E.g. - How to make 6: (2+1) x 2 + 0 = 6

Answers on the next to last page.

Olympic Torch ’runs’ past The Hollies

The Hollies, The Stables Newport Road, Stafford. ST16 1BY,

You will find us every other Friday at 09:15am in Room 8 “Go on…..have a say!”

What a fantastic term we have had! The School Council has set up a very successful working relationship with Katharine House Hospice.

The representatives continuously think of new ideas to improve their time at the Hollies and planned great projects for the summer term.

So what’s been happening....? - Pupils put together new ideas for a fresh and bright new Pupils’ Common Room

- School Council organised, with staff, the celebrations for the Olympic Torch being carried past the

school on 30th May. This also involved a great barbeque!

- The Katharine House ‘Big Cuppa’ morning was in June to officially welcome in summer and lots

more!

Just remember, if anyone has any suggestions or ideas as to how we can make the Hollies a healthier and happier learning environment…we want to know your thoughts!

Sarah- (School Council Representative) Mr J Nation -(Head of School Council)

Our Environmental Study We are encouraged to respect other people but to do this fully we need to respect our environment. To help us do this we have been learning about recycling and saving energy. This term a group visited Overton Recycling Ltd situated in Lye near Stourbridge.

Jordan writes:

At Overton we weighed ourselves on the weigh bridge. They recycle washing machines, air con machines and WEEE, (waste electrical and electronic equipment). We can respect the environment by recycling our electrical goods.

The Hollies Connection Paralympic Value: Inspiration

Mrs Pooley’s daughter Alice is an archer and although she has been County Champion in the past she knew that she would never make it to The Olympics. So she took up the next best thing and volunteered as a Gamesmaker at both the Olympic and Paralympic Archery. ‘’It was a great experience,’’ she stated. ‘’I was able to see the best archers in the world and to make friends with some of them. Accompanying them to the field of play was very responsible as I knew everything had to be just right although it felt very nerve-racking.’’ Alice’s hero turned out to be Chuck, a 60 year old American Paralympic archer

injured in Vietnam and having only one arm and one leg.

‘’I couldn’t believe it when I saw him releasing his bowstring with his mouth! I said he was inspirational but he didn’t agree. He then told me he will not be in London in the summer as he had been beaten fairly and squarely by an archer who releases his bow with his toes!’’
